In only its third year the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival is proving itself to be a reliable source of eclectic genre cinema. For one week in October residents of Brooklyn will experience a wide vareity of genre delights. This morning the festival announced the first wave of films playing at this year's festival. Cam was quickly snapped up for distirbution so the chance to see it with a crowd in a cinema is suddenly a rare opportunity - don't miss it. Longtime My Bloody Valentine fans know better than to get too excited at the prospect of new music from Kevin Shields and company. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
The lineup for Cannes 2017 has finally been announced, and it’s a doozy. From the inevitable return of Michael Haneke to the shocking inclusion of television (albeit television from celebrated Cannes alumni David Lynch and Jane Campion), the 70th edition of the world’s most prestigious film festival promises to have something for everyone.
We asked our panel of critics to name the Cannes premiere they’re most excited to see, and their answers were unsurprisingly all over the map.

“You might ask why we are doing this commentary track.”Cathy’s Curse (1976)
Commentators: Simon Barrett (filmmaker), Brian Collins (critic/author)
1. This original cut features opening text that Collins (who also creates credits for TV/film) apparently recreated, and they’ve finally given Barrett the opportunity to read all nineteen words. They’re not present in the longer director’s cut. “I’ve never seen the longer cut,” says Barrett “and I won’t because I’m patriotic.”
2. The onscreen text was added by the distributors to explain the footage they cut for its release.
3. Barrett (and Collins?) recorded a “fan” commentary for the films years ago.
4. Barrett wonders about the Venn Diagram including people who are fans of the film and happen to know who both he and Collins are. “It’s like two specks that you can’t tell if they’re the same or not.”

Capcom’s fun-loving survival horror title Dead Rising 4 is now available to purchase and download on Steam, the dev’s announced. Having been available on Xbox One and Windows 10 since December last year, the sequel’s release on the service is the first time the title has made the jump from a Microsoft platform to another, so if you’ve so far passed on the opportunity to dispatch with a near-endless horde of the undead with absurd weaponry at your disposal, perhaps this particular version can change your mind.

February means Valentine's Day, and whether you're Netflix-and-chill-ing (are we still saying that?) or staving off feelings of crushing loneliness, streaming is a must. This month, you can either celebrate the lovelorn holiday with Mindy Kaling's ode to romcoms and a sensual evening with Michael Bolton, or fully embrace your singlehood with the cynical bleakness of an indie flick with the perfect title for the Trump era. And who doesn't love a good ol' chipper cannibalism comedy, regardless of his or her relationship status? Here's your go-to streaming guide for the next month.

Cynicism isn’t hard to come by in the horror genre; any Italian cannibal or home invasion flick will satiate your desire for an outlook on man’s worst transgressions. Conversely, it’s even harder to find a film with such a buoyant feel that is at odds with the terror on display. Well, folks, may I present to you The Boogens (1981), an endearing charmer of a subterranean monster movie. By the time it’s over, you may want to give it a big old hug.
Released by Jensen Farley Pictures in September (with Paramount buying up the TV rights) on a budget of $600,000 Us, The Boogens did nothing to impress critics. However, a certain Stephen King loved the hell out of it, and his praise would grace the advertising as it did with his accolades of The Evil Dead (1981). (A King blurb held a lot of truck in those days.

Now, I love a good slasher flick as much as the next horror fan, so The Laughing Mask looked like it had potential in the opening credits which saw a blade-wielding masked killer laughing maniacally while apparent victims were tied to chairs before him. This, intercut with black and white classic skeletal animation and music to match was an interesting and attention grabbing start.

[Guest author Christopher Lombardo of Really Awful Movies celebrates Canada Day by looking back at three backwoods Canadian horror films.] In the ’70s, Canadian tax loopholes spurred growth in domestic horror films, providing a more reliable low-cost means of recouping one’s investment in a frequently fickle business. A few, like Martin Scorsese’s favorite The Changeling, were critical darlings, while the bulk of them were regarded as cheap government-funded trash. A prominent Canadian critic famously called Cronenberg’s Shivers “an atrocity, a disgrace to everyone connected with it” in a jeremiad titled “You Should Know How Bad This Film Is. After All, You Paid for It.”
Luckily, for those of us invested in such things artistically if not financially (unless you count our tax dollars), we got gems such as Happy Birthday to Me, My Bloody Valentine, Black Christmas (1974), and many others.
The “tax shelter” era, in addition to straight-ahead slashers, also gave us lesser-known films that exposed class divisions—punishing urban interlopers who lacked the necessary survival skills to thrive in the wilderness.

Taking him further down the subvert-a-comedic-performer’s-persona trail blazed with Crystal Fairy and Nasty Baby, writer-director Sebastian Silva is hoping to have Will Ferrell lead Captain Dad, a “family thriller” that’s nabbed Catherine Keener and his Crystal Fairy / Magic Magic star Michael Cera. [Variety]
On paper, its set-up doesn’t sound worlds apart from Ferrell’s best-known work: Rich Peelman (there’s your first sign) celebrates his wife’s (Keener) birthday by taking her, their six children, and the children’s partners “on a trip through the Caribbean on a sail boat.” But things go awry when his “subpar sailing abilities [there’s the second] and clashes of attitude with the rest of the family are brought into question” — supposedly to ends more overtly dramatic than comedic.
With good forces (including Archer Gray and Christine Vachon‘s Killer Films) supporting it, we should hear more about Captain Dad in the coming months. Based on established facts,...

Hey there, creeps! As you know I love turnin’ you ghouls on to new music, and this time I got somethin’ a bit different for ya — a band that embraces a multitude of 90s-era alternative influences to create their own unique sound: The Foxfires! Of course they are fans of our beloved horror biz as well, as you will see as you read on!
Famous Monsters. Welcome, fellas. Please have a seat… pick any coffin you want! Now let’s kick off this lil’ convo with an introduction!
Foxfires. Our name is the Foxfires; we’re a Seagaze band from Nyack, NY. Seagaze is a clever combination of indie rock and 90s alternative. Our influences include My Bloody Valentine, Foals, Nirvana, and Silversun Pickups. We came up with the term “Seagaze” based on the feeling you get when gazing out into the ocean when you’re on the shore.

My bloody Valentine? "The Walking Dead" returns for its midseason premiere this Sunday, and things are not looking good for Daryl (Norman Reedus), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) in the opening scene.
AMC released the first four minutes of the episode, which picks up right where it left off in November. The three are stopped by a menacing-looking group of bikers, who turn out to work for the upcoming big bad Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). We don't get to meet Negan yet, but his name is invoked as his henchmen demand Daryl, Sasha, and Abraham hand over their weapons.

When one looks back at mid ‘70s to early ‘80s horror, it’s quite surprising to see how many Canadian made films are nestled among fan favorites. Titles such as Black Christmas, Shivers, Prom Night, Happy Birthday to Me, and My Bloody Valentine continue to delight and shock veteran horror lovers or those just starting their jagged journey down the terror path. There is one, however, that due to a troubled production and poor distribution, seems relegated to the discount bins of time. Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on, uh, Curtains (1983), an unsung slasher weirder than a sack full of rabid beavers.

The late ‘80s signaled the end of my first golden age of horror. Which is to say two things: adulthood beckoned, and horror films – especially slashers - were running low on inspiration (remember the early ‘90s wasteland? Brr.). However, looking across the waters, some veteran Italian filmmakers weren’t throwing in the towel yet. Michele Soavi’s Stage Fright (1987) stands apart from the crowd because it proved that not only was the beaten and flogged sub-genre alive, it was still capable of surprising fans with enough fresh blood pumping through its weary veins to make you sit up and notice. Just when you thought you couldn’t survive another hack ‘em up, Stage Fright made you a believer again.

A new year and right out of the gate some must-own new music to share. I admit I let the tremendousily engaging "The Golden Lion" slip through the cracks in my inbox back in November. Nonetheless, this Montreal-based quintet, named after a lake region in Saskatchewan, Canada and featuring the husband/wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, are creating some grand work. If you're into hazy waves of reverb-drenched guitars and worshipped at the altar of My Bloody Valentine, or the shoegazer rock scene in general, you'll be pleased as punch. But that's just half the story as their melodic, alt-rock has traces of Pink Floyd and even some slight prog leanings. Influences aside, The Besnard Lakes' track begs repeated headphone listens to fully appreciate the sonic weave of texture and nuances. Taken from A Coliseum Complex Museum (Jagjaguwar) and set for a January release date, order your CD or vinyl copy today!

Get ready to be terrified as Thorpe Park is bringing back its Fright Nights for a 14th year next month.
The annual celebration of all things horror and Halloween will return from October 9 to November 1, including a brand new Big Top Carnival maze.
Digital Spy was scared witless by the event last year, so expect 2015 to be even more disgusting.
The Big Top will feature an array of sordid characters including adult babies, clowns and mime artists as they creep you out while trying to work your way through the dank corridors.
Other experiences will include a Fortune Teller's Wagon, a mirror maze with clowns, a creepy fun house, a torture chamber and a circus 'scare room'. If that doesn't put hair on your lips, nothing will.
Returning this year are the mazes dedicated to horror classics The Blair Witch Project, My Bloody Valentine, The Cabin in the Woods and Saw.

Siouxsie Sioux ended an eight-year songwriting hiatus Saturday night when she contributed a new track titled "Love Crime" to the series finale of Hannibal. The Siouxsie and the Banshees singer's haunting, strings-laden track was spearheaded by the serial killer show's music supervisor Brian Reitzell, who spoke to Entertainment Weekly (via Pitchfork) about how he coaxed Sioux to record the track despite the singer stating she hadn't written a song or entered the studio in nearly a decade.

When MTV teased the opening eight minutes of their "Scream" spinoff series late last month, I described the scene -- which depicted the brutal, jugular-spurting murder of Bella Thorne's character -- as "lazy, gratuitous and boring." I might have added "misogynistic" to the list of descriptors. It's a piece I probably wouldn't have written five years ago. My freshman year of high school, I caught a Friday-night showing of "Halloween" and "Halloween II" back-to-back -- on basic cable, with all the sex and nudity cut out. Because this is America, what remained was the violence: stabbings, impalings, deadly hot-tub scaldings, eyes gouged with hypodermic needles. I loved it all, innocently. I still do, but with less assurance. What is it that draws me to this macabre spectacle? More to the point: should I really feel good about enjoying it? The slasher film, as a rule, is a celebration of violence.

I’ve said it many times before and I’ve no doubt I’ll say it many times again, but Canadians know how to make damn good horror flicks and guess what? They also know how to do great retro-grindhouse flicks too! Yes Discopath, the tale of a man turned to murder by the beat, is another fantastic genre flick from the land that brought us He Knows You’re Alone, My Bloody Valentine and the more recent Antisocial.
Writer/director Renaud Gauthier made his name as a music video director, so it should come as no surprise that music features heavily in his first feature film, Discopath, an epic tale of trauma and turntables:

With writer/director David Robert Mitchell's Cannes-premiered "It Follows" bringing in over $16 million at the domestic box office on a slim $2 million budget, the theatrical market seems ripe for another arty horror movie hit to arise. So which of this year's festival favorites could follow (no pun intended) in "It Follows'" footsteps? With the close of the 3rd annual Stanley Film Festival on Sunday, below I've pegged six buzzed-about horror titles from this year's three major festivals so far (Sundance, SXSW and Stanley) that could become the next unlikely breakout in theaters. "The Witch" Director: Robert Eggers Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie Synopsis: New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. Screened at: Sundance...

You love the horror, suspense thriller, action and science fiction films that make up the world of Canadian cult cinema affectionately known as Canuxploitation.
You’ve watched the entire David Cronenberg genre filmography (if not, please do so now as The Brood, Scanners and The Fly are three of the greatest horror films ever made).
You’ve seen Black Christmas and The Changeling and watched a slasher-ific marathon of Prom Night, Terror Train, Happy Birthday to Me and My Bloody Valentine.
You caught up with Cube, the Ginger Snaps series, Splice, Hobo with a Shotgun and WolfCop all while keeping close tabs on the works of Astron-6.
Yet your hunger for Canadian genre film productions and co-productions cannot be satiated.

Over the years, horror and Valentine’s Day have mirrored the celebratory couples of February 14th by coming closer together. On Cupid’s big day this year, horror fans can watch both versions of My Bloody Valentine as well as the 2001 cult film, Valentine, curl up on the couch for the El Rey Network’s 2nd annual ‘Rip Your Heart Out’ Marathon, swap Freddy Krueger cards or even enjoy a nice Cannibal Holocaust dinner at Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
And, of course, if you love The Walking Dead almost as much (or maybe even more than) your significant other, you no doubt are looking forward to printing and sharing Skybound’s annual The Walking Dead Valentine’s Day cards, which have now been unveiled and feature memorable moments and characters from both the comic book and the TV series:

The eternally delayed comeback album has become a running joke in the music business, instantly evoked by the words Chinese Democracy (finally released to a tepid response 15 years after Guns N' Roses's previous album) and Detox (it's been 15 years and counting since 2001, and now Dr. Dre maybe isn't calling it Detox anymore). But there are actually quite a few artists who manage to return after a really long break with an excellent album. It's been a banner year for the comeback album: Electronic-music pioneer Aphex Twin released the widely acclaimed Syro, his first in 13 years. And now R&B hero D'Angelo has dropped his Christmas surprise, Black Messiah. In their honor, here are the 12 best studio albums by artists who were away for at least a decade. (A criterion that rules out favorites like Patti Smith's Gone Again, Dr. Dre's 2001, and Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel ...)1. My Bloody Valentine,...

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.

Well, it’s Christmas time at Jfc, and that can mean only one thing: murder! No, we’re not talking about exploding turkeys or accidental candy cane impalement. It’s time to watch some ho-ho-horror movies! All this month, Cargill and I will be traversing the calendar and celebrating those horror flicks that seek to sever all joy from their designated season. These won’t always be Christmas horror, but they will always be sinfully delectable. First up, we park the car on February 14th and spend some quality time with My Bloody Valentine. This Canadian gem gave us a plethora of major miner frights and taught us that an engine block can double as an oven. Life may be like a box of chocolates, but Mbv proves that box also contains plenty of death. Enjoy, and mark your calendars for the next bloody installment of this latest series! We're standing in the queue for Thorpe Park's brand new Fright Night maze - Studio 13 - not quite sure what to expect.
Queues for Thorpe Park rides are pretty darn long to say the least, but even the fast-track line for the latest scare-athon was surprisingly massive, showing just how popular this event is after 13 years.
Eventually we are placed in a group with about six others, and taken into a narrow corridor. After a stern warning and telling off by a warden (no asthmatics, epileptics or people with bad backs here, I'm afraid), four members of the other group couldn't take it and opted to stay behind (after all that queuing!). This doesn't bode well.
We found ourselves at the back, which you think would help as you could tell what was going to happen in advance. This was not the case. We were soon greeted by an array...

Halloween is almost upon us and there’s no better time of year to watch some of your favourite horror films, or better yet…discover something new to terrify you for the very first time.
These are ten films that I always find myself watching during the Halloween season.
1. The Universal Monsters
I’m cheating a bit here but try as I might I just couldn’t narrow it down to one. While none of these films are necessarily scary from a modern perspective, nothing gets me in the Halloween mood quite like a dose of good ol’ Universal Monsters.
Horror Trivia: Lon Chaney, Jr. played all four of the big monsters during Universal’s monster heyday. He played Frankenstein’s monster in The Ghost of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man in The Wolf Man, Dracula in Son of Dracula, and The Mummy in The Mummy’s Ghost.

It’s hard to believe, but Thurston Moore’s new album “The Best Day” (out this week) is just his fourth proper solo album. Texarkana is the home of several murders that occurred in 1946 by a masked killer that was given the name “The Phantom Killer.” It’s a city made up of two counties – one in Arkansas and one in Texas. Ironically, producers Ryan Murphy and Jason Bum have approached the film The Town That Dreaded Sundown in a similar fashion. On the surface the film is a sequel to the 1976 slasher of the same name, and yet, the film often feels like a remake as well including recreations of some of that film’s kills. A meta-sequel/remake is too much of a mouthful to say, so what do you actually call it? Regardless of its label, this new Town is worth visiting simply for the sake of it taking a unique approach to bringing to the screen a killer we’ve seen before.

I’ve turned over a new leaf. You see, I passed up an opportunity this week. I could’ve reviewed the much anticipated Grendel Vs The Shadow crossover and passed up on either Alice Cooper or the new Silent Hill comic, even though they actually fit better the horror movie format of Destroy The Brain. But I didn’t! So instead you get three reviews of three horror comics, and I’m going to try to stick more to horror comics from here on out, when I can.
Full disclosure; the Grendel Vs The Shadow comic is $6! Honestly, this pretty well scared me away from doing it even more. Sure, I probably could’ve just reviewed that and skipped Alice Cooper and Silent Hill, but that would’ve been even more of a betrayal of Destroy The Brain.
You can trust me to be honest about these things. Really, you can.

The Hannibal Season One Volumes 1 & 2 soundtrack will be available digitally on August 5th and on CD September 2nd. The Hannibal Season Two Volumes 1 & 2 Original TV Soundtracks will be available digitally on September 2nd and on CD September 23rd.
