For its first nine issues, Scott Snyder’s All-Star Batman was all about journeying under the surface of some of Batman’s most dangerous foes, exploring what makes them tick and what makes them who they are. Beginning last issue, the new story arc ‘The First Ally’ is applying this tactic to another character who often doesn’t get explored any deeper than his usual, superficial role: Bruce’s butler Alfred.
Issue #11 follows on from last time and is likewise split between Alfred’s past and the present, with the two storylines having surprising connections. The present-day narrative is the main thrust of the piece, as Batman continues his investigation into the Genesis Engine – a Macguffin that can be used to rewrite human DNA, creating monsters. It’s so dangerous that even old enemies like Penguin, Black Mask and Great White Shark – who turn up for a very funny, but brief, cameo – are willing to help the Dark Knight in order to keep it out of harm’s way.
It’s an entertaining yarn, with some great moments of action – in particular, Batman punching his way out of a lake of hungry crocodiles – but the most interesting part of the issue has to be the look at Alfred’s backstory. After teasing Mr. Pennyworth’s tearaway youth in the previous issue, here we get to see how he’s much closer to Bruce than you might think; with both of them having committed themselves to a cause at a young age on the back of the loss of their father. Alfred also narrates the issue, which produces an emotional theme of the butler worrying that one day he won’t be there to protect the man that he always refers to, in this comic at least, as his “son.”

Just as Snyder is a hugely reliable writer, you always know the book is in safe hands when Rafael Albuquerque is doing the artwork. Overall, Batman’s new armoured – and still yet to be named – enemy is currently a little disappointing, as he’s basically just a lackey with not much personality. But in Albuquerque’s gripping fight scenes he makes him a formidable foe for the Dark Knight. The final few pages, full of sword fights and gun shots and fire, are brilliantly brought to life by the artist and the explosive cliffhanger will have you gasping for more.
As usual, All-Star Batman #11 also features a B-story, the second part of ‘Killers-In-Law,’ which sees Bruce going undercover in Russia to bring down a powerful crime family. It’s a fast-paced, dark and violent story from Rafael Albuquerque (on writing duties this time) and Rafael Scavone. If I’m being honest, it isn’t gripping me as much as the main strip, but this installment does deal with an interesting challenge for Batman: how can he save lives when he’s pretending to be a ruthless criminal?
All-Star Batman #11 continues to unravel a fascinating mystery regarding the one man Bruce Wayne thought he could trust above all others. Who is this new enemy on Batman’s tail? What really happened in Alfred’s past and is he hiding something from Bruce even now? Overall, this issue isn’t quite as strong as last time, but it’s still another high-quality installment of this hugely recommended series. It’s a real shame that we only have a limited number of issues left.

This review contains minor spoilers.
All-Star Batman‘s latest issue kicks off a brand-new arc, after issue #9 wrapped up the thrilling ‘Ends of the Earth’ storyline with aplomb. We’ve been promised that ‘The First Ally’ will introduce a new foe into Batman’s rogues gallery who has some ties to the character’s beginnings. While we haven’t got to that exciting material yet, issue #10 is still a terrific comic.
Alfred fans, you’re in luck. Batman’s faithful butler – his first ally, if you like – is the star of the show this issue. Captions tell the story through his Pov throughout and we get an exciting opener where Mr. Pennyworth gets to drive the Batmobile (with Batman himself backseat driving, of course). Writer Scott Snyder nails Alfred’s character here, in both his love for someone he exclusively calls his “son” and “child” through the course of this...

With the Joker back on the big screen in Suicide Squad, we celebrate the craziest plans of the Clown Prince of Crime...
He's the greatest villain of them all. He's the evil that tests Batman and makes the hero better. He's an uncontrollable force of chaos, more akin to a hurricane than a criminal, who strikes without warning. He believes that life is a chaotic farce and everything exists as part of a twisted game between him and Batman. He is the star of comics, television, cartoons, and film. He's the Joker, one of the most enduring symbols of evil in the last century.
The Joker is no match for Batman physically, so when he puts one over on the Dark Knight, when he 'gets' him, it has to be a masterpiece of chaos and violence. These are just some of the greatest moments where the Joker...

#BlackComicsMonth Diversity in Comics Panel (My view from the back row)
Hosted by the energetic Miz Caramel Vixen, the founder of Vixenvarsity.com, the #BlackComicsMonth Diversity in Comics panel featured a wide variety of panelists from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and sexualities. They also work in vastly different comics genres from Mildred Louis writing and drawing a Magical Girl webcomic with women of color called Agents of the Realm to David F. Walker, who directed a documentary about the blaxploitation genre and currently writes Cyborg for DC Comics and much more. One of the panelists, Mikki Kendall, only recently broke into comics with the Swords of Sorrow: Lady Rawhide/Miss Fury one-shot and is more well-known for her pieces about intersectional feminism for XoJane, The Guardian, and others as well as prose fiction. Vixen let each panelist speak their mind about what diversity means to them, and they often tied in...

Villains are everything to a story, and especially in the comic book medium, a hero is only as good as the villains that they thwart. Batman has the most recognizable, most iconic, and overall best rogue’s gallery in all of comics. From classics such as Two-Face, Catwoman, and the Riddler to relative newcomers like Bane, The Court of Owls, and Hush, all of these villains, and are strongly ingrained in comic book lore to a degree unmatched by other comic book villains. There are some heroes like Superman, Shazam, and the Hulk who have such a shallow crop of villains to draw from that it works against a creator’s ability to tell quality stories. Batman doesn’t have this problem; in fact, one of the greatest comic book villains calls the Dark Knight his archenemy.
What makes the Joker such an exciting villain isn’t just his diabolical deeds,...

We are only a few weeks away from the geeky awesomeness that is San Diego Comic-Con, and studios are lining up to show off their upcoming slate of projects. Today, Warner Bros. announced details on what they plan on bringing to the show, including the DC Comics based TV shows, Batman anniversary celebration, and first looks at the final Hobbit film and Mad Max Fury Road.
If you're planning your Sdcc weekend around what could be announced, then these schedules will come in very handy for you. WB has now announced their schedule of events and broken down what they expect to show at this year's event. From the sounds of it we'll be getting our first teasers for The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies and, thankfully, Mad Max: Fury Road.
While some are wondering at the absence of any mention of Batman v. Superman, I wouldn't get too upset just yet.

Not content with being cooped up in Gotham City, Scott Snyder moves one hero over, and tries his hand at the Man of Steel with Superman Unchained. This new series has been anticipated for a long time, with Snyder’s fantastic work on Batman, which began before the New 52 reboot, making fans eager to see his take on DC’s premiere hero. With Jim Lee on art duties, Snyder has crafted something that’s not your usual Supes book, and one that can be summed up in one word: Fun. A whole lot of fun.
The inaugural storyline on the book, The Leap, sets itself up as a mystery, one firmly rooted in real world history. The opening pages are quite a hook, piquing your interests quite nicely. We’re then thrown into your typical Superman scene, with a daring rescue in Earth’s orbit. It’s here we are...

Re-reading “The Court of Owls” in anticipation of reading the recently published “Night of the Owls” hardback, I was struck once again of the sheer brilliance of this Batman story that writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo have created. In nearly a year since I first read it, the story retains the energy, intrigue and powerful storytelling to keep me enthralled and reading from page one until the final panel.
For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure, the story features a mythical illuminati group called the Court of Owls who have secretly ruled Gotham City for centuries from the shadows. They are so clandestine that they were unknown even to Bruce Wayne who, like everyone else, dismissed them as a nursery rhyme and nothing more. But when Bruce begins showcasing plans to completely revamp Gotham City’s infrastructure, they begin to reassert their hold over the city...

Batman and Before Watchmen were just some of the topics discussed by creators during the DC All Access and New 52 panels at Chicago's Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2).

One such teaser was dropped by Cco Geoff Johns when talking up the DC Free Comic Book Day issue. "It's a story that really sets the stage for a lot of things that are coming in DC Comics," he said just before quickly flashing a four-page fold-out featuring Jim Lee's art.

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!
