Femme fatales have existed since the dawn of narrative art. This intoxicating female archetype is known for her alluring sensuality and dark habit of causing harm or destruction to any man who falls into her grasp. From the sirens of Greek literature and Shakespeare’s Lady MacBeth to the vamps of the silent film era and gangster movie gun molls, femme fatales have continued to change with times.
A surge of classic examples arose in pulp literature and the subsequent film noir heyday of the 1940s and 50s – possibly a response to shifting gender roles in the wake of World War II. Many consider Barbara Stanwyck’s Phyllis Dietrichson to be the prototypical film fatale of the silver screen. In Double Indemnity, this magnetic blonde seduces a hapless salesman and convinces him to kill her husband in order to cash in on the titular insurance policy.

Ranking as one of my favorite genre movies of this century is writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein’s 2007 vagina dentata horror comedy Teeth (watch it Here), which I find makes for a good double feature pairing with another one of my favorites, the 2000 werewolf coming-of-age movie Ginger Snaps. Teeth doesn’t seem to get referenced very often – so I was glad to hear (via Deadline) that it’s getting a bit of a revival. A Strange Loop playwright Michael R. Jackson has written a musical stage play adaptation of Teeth, and it’s expected to make its Off Broadway debut in February 2024!
Jackson wrote the Teeth stage play book with Anna K. Jacobs, with Jacobs providing the music and Jackson writing the lyrics.
Lichtenstein’s film had the following set-up: Dawn (Jess Weixler) is an active member of her high-school chastity club but when she meets Tobey (Hale Appleman), nature takes its course,...

Earlier this month, members of the Screen Actors Guild voted to authorize a strike if their negotiating committee doesn’t reach an agreement on a new contract with major Hollywood studios by June 30. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher released a video message this week with an update on the negotiations, telling members, “We are having an [sic] extremely productive negotiations that are laser focused on all of the crucial issues you told us are most important to you. We’re standing strong and we are going to achieve a seminal deal.”

Monsters in the horror genre are endlessly nuanced. They can be physically daunting, emotionally horrifying, violent, manipulative, abject, paranormal, and so on. But a consistent thread is that they all start from somewhere. Now, we may not have the luxury of being granted a fully fleshed-out backstory for every monstrous creature, villain, or anti-hero ever to grace the screen, but we can normally chalk their inception up to two scenarios: They're either deeply othered non-human beings, invading the norm and representative of an external threat on society, or there are homegrown, society-made monsters — an amalgamation of humanity's pitfalls, ugliness, and actions that led to a creation that reflecting humanity's misdeeds back to it.
Oftentimes, this perspective can be interpreted as conservative or reactionary, but that doesn't really apply to the "Good for Her" horror subgenre.

Witches are more than just gingerbread-loving, black hat-wearing, broomstick-flying creatures of chaos and evil. While there are plenty of on-screen witches that still have questionable morals, there are just as many with a more nuanced backstory. But just because there are more “good” witches out there, doesn’t mean that these magic wielders are any less formidable. Witches have always been a force to be reckoned with on screen, and if anything, their desire to help others, make up for past mistakes, or protect their family makes them even more powerful and intimidating.
The following witches from TV and movies come from a wide variety of worlds and backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common – they are complete and total badasses. Every single witch on this list would make a worthy and powerful ally, but good luck to anyone who dares to cross them.

Mitchell Lichtenstein’s cult classic “Teeth” sure still has bite. As “Teeth” celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, it’s only fitting to look back on the legacy of the “vagina dentata” origin story. Written and directed by Lichtenstein, “Teeth” stars Jess Weixler as Dawn, a high school student who has committed her body to the Promise, an abstinence group that preaches on the unlawful act of sex.
The at-times outrageously campy film has a foreboding score reminiscent of “The Room” crossed with a misplaced fever dream ode to John Carpenter, framing Dawn’s dedication to keeping herself pure like a character trait one of the many victims of a slasher may have. The blonde-haired, blue-eyed virgin has a distinct memory of being digitally penetrated by her creepy step-brother as a child…and let’s just say, neither of them forget it.
Is Dawn our final girl? Not quite.

They say it's about the journey and not the destination.
And well, the journey of depressed 20-somethings who hone their magical abilities and crusades to protect humanity from disaster has finally come to an end.
It's been a whirlwind of a series, and there are so many emotions wrapped up with the ending of an amazing series.
Fortunately for fans, the journey was just as satisfying as the destination during the series finale of The Magicians Season 5 Episode 13.
It's hard to write these words, as The Magicians has been one of my favorite shows of all time.
It's always hard to say good-bye, but having a sense of closure does wonders.
The series, of course, was very meta this episode in acknowledging that this was the end.
From Santa's comment about how things are rarely wrapped up neatly to applying Zelda's comment about death not being the end to the...

This The Magicians review contains spoilers.
The Magicians Season 5 Episode 12
The Magicians should be applauded for its commitment to including a musical episode each season, and the fact that “The Balls” comes just before the end of the series makes this one particularly poignant. In that sense, centering the songs around emotions, bottled or otherwise, was an appropriate choice. However, combining the musical elements with a heist, another tried and true narrative in this show, may have had a diluting effect on both fan favorite formats rather than doubling the enhancement. Nevertheless, with the world seed in hand (or in… you know), the finale is bound to be legitimately world changing.
The setup for the heist was, as usual, a high point of the episode. The Magicians is good at making sure everyone has something to contribute. Here, for example, we had Marina describing her failed attempt at stealing the...

The Magicians has been a force of nature from the very start, growing a loyal audience and weaving a tale that bridged our world with the storybook land of Fillory and has become more and more complex ever since. Given its massive appeal, including our glowing reviews over the years, the anticipation was high for the return of season 5, which turned out to be the show’s final season.
The logline for The Magicians season 5 spoke of plenty of magical mayhem that was in store:
Last season, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: the life of Quentin Coldwater, who died heroically to save his friends— and the world. Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him. Now, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way and there’s too damn much of it,...

And for its final trick, “The Magicians” is bidding farewell.
Syfy has announced that the current fifth season of the fantasy show will be its last. Season 5, which is scheduled to last 13 episodes, premiered in Jan. 2020, meaning that the series finale will air on April 1.
Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. Well, that didn't go according to plan.
Despite our heroes best laid plan to kill Seb on The Magicians Season 5 Episode 8, his death didn't actually stick.
They probably should have made sure his corpse was cold before planning their escape route, but there's no need to quibble over the execution of the plan just yet.
That super fun conversation will come just before they're all executed for treason.
My biggest question is how Seb managed to resurrect?
He was clearly dead, yet he somehow came back to life.
Did Eliot as Margo and Josh chop down the wrong tree? Did Julia stab Seb before his vitality conduit had been severed? Is he a god in disguise and can't easily be killed? Can he just not die at all?
I need answers, and we're going to have to wait a least a week for answers. Why is the world so cruel sometimes?...

The Magicians Season 5 Episodes 5 & 6
It’s clear why there needed to be a double episode of The Magicians this week. “Apocalypse? Now?!” was the perfect set-up for the magnificence that was “Oops!… I Did It Again” even though the caper plot of the first half was entertaining in its own right like similar heist episodes from previous seasons, such as season two’s “Plan B.” Much of the credit for the five stars in this review goes to the expertly handled time travel shenanigans, but a large percentage of the praise must also be reserved for the performances of Summer Bishil and Hale Appleman, the latter of whom has not had an episode this...

Hale Appleman has some very exciting news to share about Season 5 of The Magicians. In a recent chat with TV Guide, he let it slip that Eliot stans can now rejoice because Episode 6 of the upcoming season is, "essentially, an Eliot movie."

It's almost time to return to the magical world of The Magicians.
Syfy on Monday revealed that the fifth season of its hit drama series would hit the air January 15 at 10/9c.
The network also dropped a new trailer that teases some spooky happenings. That's just par for the course with this series!
Based on the best-selling novels by Lev Grossman, The Magicians centers on a group of friends as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures who threaten to destroy the magical world they've come to know.
Last season, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: the life of Quentin Coldwater, who died heroically to save his friends - and the world.
Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him.
Now, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way...

The Monster and his sister have been dealt with! On The Magicians Season 4 Episode 13 several threads from this season pull together nicely to create a satisfying, if a little rushed, conclusion.
First, let's talk about Julia. The showdown that begins at the end of The Magicians Season 4 Episode 12 is over and done with quickly, but introduces a new set of problems. Mainly, what path Julia wants to choose.
I talked a bit in my review of the last episode about how Julia hasn't had a choice, and this is yet another instance where choice is taken away from her.
She's unconscious, and Penny receives the power to decide as to whether she's going to be a full-goddess or if she's going to be a human forever.

This season’s much anticipated musical episode of The Magicians has some great song covers, which range from sweet ballads to empowering anthems. On the softer side, there’s Hale Appleman serenading Summer Bishil with Al Jolson’s and Bing Crosby’s “Beautiful Dreamer,” as well as getting his groove on to The Pretenders’ “Don’t Get Me Wrong.” On […]

I would like to submit The Magicians Season 4 Episode 10 as evidence that pop anthems from the 80s cure a multitude of ills.
"All That Hard, Glossy Armor," is a musical episode that plays nicely after The Magicians Season 3 Episode 9, "All That Josh."
The musical episode was an amazing exercise in how music can enhance a story, but while it showed off a lot of the core cast's performances, it didn't give Hale Appleman a chance to show off his voice much.
His parts of the "Under Pressure" duet left the audience wanting more, and that's what "All that Hard Glossy Armor" delivers.
Sure, this is a figment Eliot but the second Margo sees him on the sand dune singing "Don't Get Me Wrong" it infuses some excitement that we didn't realize we were missing this season.
The use of 80s anthems is also a strong choice for this plot.

Okay, let's unpack all that just happened. By and large, The Magicians Season 4 Episode 9 is a growing episode for a lot of our characters. We see Zelda reflecting on her role with The Order, we see Alice contemplate the role magic has played in her life, and we see Margo let go of her role as High King of Fillory.
But then we have a twist that most viewers probably saw coming a mile away. The Hedgewitch terrorism group called "The Serpent" is trying to eliminate hedgewitches with the use of a blood worm.
Related: 23 Fantastical Characters and the Shows that Need Them
The thing about this plot is that it reeks of contradictions and doesn't align with the hedgewitch agenda. They explain that The Library has turned down the ambient magic, but if that's the case, wouldn't the hedges want to find ways to access more magic?

Eliot is dead! Or so The Monster wants us to believe on The Magicians Season 4 Episode 5. However, all hope is not lost, since Eliot is actually in The Happy Place. The Happy Place is somewhere that The Monster cannot come, and it's filled with all of his past remembrances.
For the most part, Eliot seems unaware of what's going on, which wasn't what I was expected compared to the end of The Magicians Season 4 Episode 4. It's sort of forgiving that Eliot isn't aware of everything that's going on, but it's offset by the fact that Eliot has to go through all of his dark memories and find the one with a door.
The sequence where Eliot goes through all of his memories with remembrances of particular instances of Fen, Margo, and Quentin actually plays a little bit like a clip show. It's not a bad use for the format.

Two words come to mind at the end of The Magicians Season 4 Episode 4: love and death. It is an episode that rests on quiet and intimate moments, focusing on specific relationships instead of an overarching adventure; and it works.
The main storyline on The Magicians Season 4 Episode 4 though is Josh experiencing The Quickening. We've known that The Quickening was coming and connected to his sexually transmitted lycanthropy, but not when or what it is. It turns out that Josh either has to sleep with someone else who is L-negative or kill them.
Understandably, Josh isn't sold on the fact that he is either going to have to become a rapist or a murderer to satisfy the urge.
Writing about Josh's sexually-transmitted lycanthropy soon turns into a story about sexual consent and responsibility. Josh is extremely careful about his L-Positive status, knowing that it isn't curable.

Sometimes all you need is a bit of luck or a forger that can manipulate luck with an enchantment.
On The Magicians Season 4 Episode 3 the Brakebills students have their identities back, but there are still problems to be solved -- problems that aren't easy to solve since the students are wanted by The Library.
For the most part, it functions as a plot eater, ironing out the relationships between the characters and setting them in the New World Order that is The Library. It's a dangerous slope to try and move so many plots at once, and while it may work for a few episodes, it can quickly get frustrating.
Each of the plots that have been introduced this season seems to move only a fraction, but the writers condense it in such a way that while it's a lot to process, it doesn't seem too overwhelming. If anything it's...

Syfy’s adaptation of Lev Grossman’s “The Magicians” fantasy novels finally goes off-book for a wholly original story in its fourth season, and the result is just as spellbinding as ever. That’s not entirely surprising since co-showrunners Sera Gamble and John McNamara had already demonstrated their ability to play fast and loose with the source material, yet stay true to its magical spirit. Despite exhausting all of Grossman’s major plots, the new adventure continues the show’s inspired storytelling, which is both a vindication and relief for longtime fans.

Syfy has renewed “The Magicians” for a fifth season just ahead of the fourth season premiere. The show has also promoted Henry Alonso Myers to co-showrunner for the fifth season.
“‘The Magicians’ raised the bar at Syfy and has gained momentum season after season, attracting a new audience to the channel. We are proud of this series as it continues to break the boundaries of storytelling,” said Bill McGoldrick, president of scripted content at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.
Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. Currently, the characters have forgotten who they are, having had their minds wiped by “The Monster,” who has sought them out for still unknown reasons.

SyFy’s The Magicians has conjured its official season four trailer, showcasing the core group’s struggle to remember their identities and rediscover each other. The new episodes start on Jan. 23 at 9 Pm Et/8 Central.
Last season, the core group embarked on the epic quest of the seven keys to restore magic after it was turned off. In the finale, just as our magicians finally restored magic by unlocking the fountain at the other end of the Wellspring, the Library, Irene McAllistair and Dean Fogg swooped in to reroute magic to them.
In exchange, Dean Fogg negotiated the lives of his students, erasing their memories and giving each – except Alice who is now imprisoned by the Library – a new, magic-free identity. Even with their new identities, our core group is far from safe. Inside Castle Blackspire an ancient, powerful and unkillable Monster escaped confinement and jumped bodies to a new host, Eliot.
