Ashley Thorpe's animation illuminates Woodlands Dark And Days Bewitched: A History Of Folk Horror Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
It’s not often that a three hour documentary emerges as one of the most popular choices at a film festival, but at this year’s Fantasia it’s widely agreed that Kier-La Janisse’s Woodlands Dark And Days Bewitched: A History Of Folk Horror is a standout. It’s not only a film of major importance in recording the history of cinema, it’s also tremendously enjoyable from start to finish, densely packed with information and utterly beguiling. The secret to that seems in part to be Kier-La’s infectious passion for her subject, so when we met up during the festival to discuss the film, I asked her where that passion began.
“I was a really big Wicker Man fan as a teenager, and everything kind of grew from there,...

“Folk horror” is a term of relatively recent vintage — or at least popularity — that only grows more broad as “Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched” spends three and a quarter hours trying to define it. Still, a slippery thesis doesn’t detract from the pleasures of this documentary from genre scholar and programmer Kier-La Janisse. She draws on alluring clips from more than 100 films, plus myriad interviews, to survey an alternately lurid and surreal cinematic (as well as television) field of mostly rural tales inspired by traditional superstitions and lore.

Horror anthologies have made a pretty healthy comeback in the last few years; some are ok, some are regrettable, and some have awesome production values as well as good stories, such as Tales Of Halloween. Created by director Axelle Carolyn, Tales features 11 directors helming 10 tales of bad behavior, wickedness, madness, and spooky fun, with an animated opening sequence by Ashley Thorpe. Made under the umbrella collective of "The October Society," this film showcases the talents of horror directors Carolyn, Neil Marshall, Darren Lynn Bousman, John Skipp, Andrew Kasch, Lucky McKee, Adam Gierasch, Dave Parker, Mike Mendez, Ryan Schifrin, and Paul Solet. One of my all-time favorite horror events was experiencing a live performance of Tales from Beyond the Pale at the Overlook Film Festival in 2016. Such an incredible amount of work is put into these horror audio dramas from the cast, sound engineer, and especially series creators Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid. If they announce any new live performances, it's absolutely worth your time to make a trip to see it, but they're giving horror fans the ability to listen to new horror audio dramas from the comfort of their home every week.
Today, we have details on the launch of a a weekly Tales from Beyond the Pale podcast that will see a mix of new stories with content from their archives, featuring an impressive cast of horror talent. This week's crowdfunding selection includes an animated haunted house documentary, and a story about ads in the back of old comics...
The thing weirdest thing about crowdfunding websites is their ability to invent a demand for stuff you wouldn't necessarily think would have a market. Only this week, we've stumbled on a successful campaign for some sort of gigantic stone tortoise, some magic multimedia eggs from another dimension, and God only knows what this card game's all about.
While not all of these things are to our taste, we're happy that crowdfunding provides a platform to all kinds of eccentric ideas - and that's the loose theme for this week's selection of projects, which includes a macabre point-and-click adventure, a spooky animated short film, and an illustrated story about what happens when a kid decides to buy all the stuff from the back of an old comic.

It’s always a joy to stumble upon something a little different on the daily jaunt across the internet and this teaser trailer for a forthcoming animated documentary is on a subject close to my heart.
I was pointed to the work of Ashley Thorpe by Stephen Volk, writer of The Awakening and Ghostwatch, and found this short trailer for his latest work, due out in 2012, on Borley Rectory, commonly referred to as the most haunted house in England. Certainly it has a colourful past with floating nuns, mysterious writing found scrawled on the walls and ghostly carriages thundering across the grounds and with psychic investigator Harry Price’s records of his visits there it has an infamy unparalleled.
Now Thorpe has chosen this house, the incidents and Harry Price himself, as the basis for his next work and reading through the comments of the post I was very pleased...

Glass Eye Pix has announced they will be offering the complete first season of their wildly successful audio theater Tales from Beyond the Pale to audiences beginning October 11th - just in time for Halloween - as digital downloads, compact discs, and a box set. Read on for the details!
From the Press Release:
Conceived during a fog-drenched car ride with nothing beyond the windshield but a horizon-less void, Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid created the acclaimed Tales From Beyond The Pale, audio theater inspired by the vintage radio shows of Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles.
“It was very gratifying to challenge these artists to step outside their chosen medium and explore the world of audio storytelling and to get everyone into production without a long fundraising period. With audio tales the only limitation to production value is imagination,” states Fessenden.
McQuaid adds: “Season One of Tales from Beyond the...

So, to the last day of the festival and I was actually feeling less tired as I managed to get some sleep. My main highlight I knew would be Re-Animator but I knew I would also be able to see some classic horror movies I’d not yet seen.
Let’s Scare Jessica to Death
This movie is the kind that offers more questions by the end that it answers, but for that reason it works even better. Jessica is almost certainly crazy, but strangely enough so is everybody else around her. Half between a ghost and a vampire story Jessica finds she has to work out just what is real and what is in her head but I’d argue one theory has to be everything is in her head because it’s all just that crazy. With its creepy atmosphere and insane environment this was a little gem...

The Fifth Annual Buried Alive Film Festival invaded Atlanta’s historic Plaza Theater November 12-13th, showcasing the best in international short and feature length independent horror films. Hosted by author and horror evangelist Phil Nutman, the festival boasted the southeastern premiere of Frank Hennenlotter’s “Herschell Gordon Lewis, The Godfather of Gore” documentary, as well as screenings of Terry Gilliam’s short, “The Legend of Hallowdega,” and Greg Nicotero’s “United Monster Talent Agency.” Other highlights included appearances from filmmakers Ashley Thorpe and Andre Paim, who traveled to the festival from England and Brazil respectively, as well as the crew from Collective Studio in Michigan. Film festivals have for many years been a staple of most serious film fans’ experience. They are a great way to see a host of obscure and hard to find films and to see them gloriously displayed on the big screen. A lot of film festivals though tend to show the same old thing despite their venue and location differences. However, in Atlanta, Ga, there is a truly inspired festival called The Buried Alive Film Festival which is scheduled for November 12 & 13 at the historic Plaza Theater.
Bigger and better than ever, this year’s Buried Alive Film Festival is being sponsored by Fangoria magazine and the forthcoming American Horrors TV show and will screen five features – four of them Southeast premieres – and over 30 stunning short films from around the world.
The 2010 event also marks the first Us festival appearance of multiple award-winning British filmmaker, Ashley Thorpe, the first Southeastern appearance...

There's no greater guilty pleasure I have than horror themed radio drama. I listened to it all to this very day. The Weird Circle, Lights Out!, Sleep No More, The Hermit's Cave -- all classics and all on heavy rotation in the Creepy household. Needless to say that Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix launching a new genre audio program entitled "Tales from Beyond the Pale" is music to my ears and it debuts on October 26th!

The latest animated short from UK-based filmmaker (and Fango contributor) Ashley Thorpe, The Hairy Hands (see Fango #293) looks set to have another “hit with a myth,” having been screened recently at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The vivid little flick—Thorpe’s fourth in a series of animations that aim to resurrect neglected aspects of British legend—looks set to follow in the footsteps of the award-winning Scayrecrow and The Screaming Skull.

If you click here you’ll be able to read the first feature I wrote about visionary UK based filmmaker Ashley Thorpe, an artist whose carefully controlled, creepy and rapturously gothic short films Scayrecrow and The Screaming Skull (which screened at this years NYC Fango Con) really left an impression on me.
The man is a stylist supreme, his weird rotoscope approach matched by his respect for myth and I wasn’t the only one who thought so. Both pictures have gone on to win a multitude of awards and earn a plethora of accolades (you can see them for yourself at Thorpe’s site) and I thought it was high time to play catch up with the man.
See, I’m still convinced this guy is going to be a huge influence in horror for years to come and it appeases my ego to know that I was one...

If I see another low budget indie horror film about some shmos getting stranded somewhere and running afoul of some class of homicidal skin snacking shmuck, I shall most assuredly scream and shoot holes in my home screen. Yes, yes, yes, the phrase “indie horror” is more often than not a real deal red flag to stay the eff you see kay Away. That’s why it is my pleasure, as both a lover of horror films that break rules and refuse to behave and gothic, stylized shockers that bow and kiss your hand before they cut your throat, to wax rapturous about Ashley Thorpe.
Thorpe’s visionary and reverent animated gothic melodramas Scayrecrow and The Screaming Skull are throwbacks to a gentler age of terror, especially that of Hammer Studios, the Victorian terror machine that I live and die by and that from 1957 – 1975, pumped out the sort of swoony stiff collared horror films that,...
