Republicans hauled FBI Director Christopher Wray in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday as part of their effort to tear down federal law enforcement for investigating Donald Trump. The hearing was a circus, with Republicans pressing Wray about various conspiracy theories and generally doing whatever they could do to portray the FBI as a corrupt extension of the Biden administration.
Democrats spent their time highlighting the absurdity of the idea, considering Wray is a registered Republican appointed by Trump. Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) poked several additional holes in...

Hakeem Jeffries (D-n.Y.), the soon-to-be House minority leader, has been telling his fellow Democratic lawmakers to think of the next two years this way: The White House is the client, House Democrats are the defense attorney. Indeed, the Biden administration has huddled a coterie of legal, legislative, and communications specialists to map out likely vectors of GOP oversight and will hire more into the effort. Ashley Etienne, who led House Democrats’ impeachment war room, has dispatched top protégés to communications posts at federal agencies Republicans have indicated they’re...

Amazon has resumed political contributions to lawmakers who voted to object to the 2020 electoral vote count on January 6th, 2021, the day that Donald Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in an effort to block the results that would make Joe Biden the winner of the presidency.
Amazon’s contributions, first reported by the website Popular Information, were to nine lawmakers, all of whom voted against the certification of electoral votes in one or more states.
In the aftermath of January 6, Amazon announced that its corporate Pac would pause contributions and said that they intended “to discuss our concerns directly with those Members we have previously supported and will evaluate their responses as we consider future Pac contributions.” Amazon called the objections to Biden’s electoral certification an “unacceptable attempt to undermine a legitimate democratic process.”

Lawmakers are making another run at establishing a performance royalty for songs that are played over traditional radio, continuing a legislative battle that dates back decades.
Dionne Warwick appeared at a press conference on Capitol Hill on Thursday along with Rep. Ted Deutch (D-fl) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-ca) as they introduced the American Music Fairness Act.
The bill would require that Am and FM stations pay performers and labels when their songs are played over the airwaves. They said that smaller broadcasters would pay much less to ease the burden on their bottom line. Satellite and digital radio do pay the royalties.
But past efforts to pass legislation have stalled in Congress against opposition from broadcasters. In fact, at the press conference, Warwick recalled that she was first enlisted to advocate for the performance royalty 48 years ago by Frank Sinatra.
“That is how long I have been involved,” Warwick said.

Ex-Republican Harley Rouda is close to claiming victory as a Democratic House candidate in Orange County. Rouda currently leads in the contest for California’s 48th District by 2,000 votes; if his lead holds, the real estate magnate will have successfully dislodged Dana Rohrabacher (R-ca) after 30 years in Congress.
A relic of the Reagan White House and staunch supporter of President Trump’s immigration policies, Rohrabacher has earned a reputation as “Putin’s favorite congressman” for his consistent opposition to Russian sanctions and calls for closer ties with the country.

Washington — Michelle Wolf’s monologue at the White House Correspondents Association dinner dominated the headlines coming out of the evening — even if it was a mere sliver of the four-hour event and only a moment in what is traditionally D.C.’s most social weekend.

The Music Modernization Act, which combines key provisions of what were four separate legislative initiatives into a single bill that will update how music rates are set and how songwriters and artists are paid, was passed unanimously by a House Judiciary Committee earlier this month. The Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors’ former ties to Hollywood’s unions are coming into question in light of its recent decision to stand by its award to ultra-conservative presidential hopeful Senator Ted Cruz.
The decision to give the Texas Republican its American Spirit Award had polarized the caucus’ membership, with internal objections leading to an emergency meeting of the executive committee Monday, which upheld the decision to honor Cruz. The caucus traditionally hands out American Spirit Awards to a Republican and a Democrat (California Governor Jerry Brown appears to be the choice on the liberal side this year, though it is unclear whether the Cruz controversy would affect his decision to accept it). Other prominent conservatives have received the award in the past, including include Congressmen Darrell Issa (R-ca) and Eric Cantor (R-va), but none has been as polarizing or anti-union as Cruz.

Issa joked that he doesn't say anything to those who mistake him for the actor, who's private parts made headlines recently. (Hamm reportedly caused a stir on the set of his AMC show "Mad Men" by not wearing underwear, but the actor denies the claims, saying he's "never not worn underwear.")

The U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday (Feb. 6) that it plans to stop delivering first-class mail on Saturdays by Aug. 1, 2013. This will only affect letters, catalogs and mailers; packages, priority and express mail will still be delivered on the weekend.
This change is an effort by the Usps to save money, after losing $16 billion in 2012. Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma says the move will save $2 billion a year.
"It's a proper business decision and long run, good for the Postal Service and good for Americans," adds Coburn.
In the past six years, the Usps has lost over $40 billion, as consumers turn to private shipping companies like Ups and FedEx, or to using electronic means of communication. Previous cost-saving measures include cutting hours of service at about half the 26,000 offices nationwide and cutting the Usps workforce by 35%.
However, the Usps can't just unilaterally act on its own accord. Senator Coburn and Representative Darrell Issa of Calif.

Geraldo Rivera appeared on The O'Reilly Factor last night to talk to Laura Ingraham about Operation Fast and Furious, and the subsequent contempt vote for Attorney General Eric Holder clearly upset him as "political hackery." Ingraham and Rivera got into a bit of a shoutfest over the matter, as Rivera challenged the audience to stop asking about Holder's motives and instead ask, "What is Darrell Issa hiding?...

The House of Representatives — including 17 Democratic members — voted today to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over subpoenaed documents related to Operation Fast and Furious, the botched gun-running project that's been under investigation by the House Oversight Committee (led by Rep. Darrell Issa). The vote was 255-67-1. In protest, many Democrats walked out of the House, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Congressman Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows today defending the investigation he has spearheaded into the Fast & Furious operation. On ABC's This Week, Jake Tapper confronted Issa about the partisan appearance of the hearings, asking him why he hasn't brought Bush administration officials to testify and why, under that administration, he never voiced any problems with executive privilege.

Attorney General Eric Holder told Congress today that he and FBI Director Robert Mueller have both been questioned by investigators over the leaks concerning secret drone strikes and cyberattacks.
The leaks appeared in a New York Times article two weeks ago, and have since drawn harsh criticized from congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle, who have characterized the leaks as some of the worst in national security history.
Gop figures have criticized Holder's appointment of two Justice Department attorneys to lead an investigation into the leaks, and called on Holder to appoint an independent counsel. Republicans love independent counsels, except when they're appointed by Democrats, in which case they're blatantly political.
Holder also announced today that two of the investigators—does the DoJ operate on a buddy system or something?—involved have been recused, because their divisions may have had access to the information involved in the leaks.

Darrell Issa and the House Oversight Committee is set to vote next week on whether to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt over his alleged refusal to turn over documents related to Fast and Furious.
Issa says Holder has withheld thousands of pages of documents and provided misleading testimony concerning the botched operation of selling and then tracking guns to Mexican drug cartels. Holder and the DoJ claimed they've testified seven times and turned over thousands of pages of documents, so what more do you want, Issa? What more do you want?!

Holder would be one of only four executive officials to have a contempt action against him in 30 years. The Obama administration has yet to assert Executive Privilege over the documents or information, which would be the easy but politically noxious out for everyone involved.

Federal lawmakers have asked the Government Accountability Office to investigate whether broadcasters have been adequately disclosing potential conflicts when they air advocacy ads promoting issues in which they have financial stakes. “It has come to my attention that some radio and TV broadcast stations may air advertising or editorial spots to influence legislation to benefit their interests, and that this practice may not be adequately disclosed to the public,” said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee (photo, below), in a letter to Gao. Although the Gao...

David A. Paterson, 55th governor of the state of New York and a member of and consultant to the National Federation of the Blind, on October 11,...
