I’ve been pretty vocal over the years about my love for the drive-in experience (I wrote this love letter to Beyond Fest and the drive-in experience in 2020 when the fest’s repertory screenings every week became a safe haven for myself and hundreds of other SoCal movie fans each and every week), so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with documentarian April Wright about her latest project, Back to the Drive-In, which highlights 11 different drive-in locations around the US, and the amazing folks that are tirelessly working to keep the drive-in experience alive.
Daily Dead recently spoke to Wright about Back to the Drive-In and during our conversation, we chatted about our own drive-in memories, her experiences working on this documentary, what she learned while on this creative journey, and more.

I love going to see movies at the drive-in theatre – in fact, if given the choice between going to an in-door theatre or a drive-in theatre, I’d choose the drive-in most of the time. It’s very difficult to beat the option of getting to watch two movies for the price of one from the comfort of your car. And given my appreciation for the drive-in experience (and for drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs), I’m glad to see that Uncork’d Entertainment will be giving a drive-in tribute documentary called Back to the Drive-In a digital and VOD release on March 14th. You can watch a trailer for the documentary in the embed above.
Directed by April Wright, Back to the Drive-In has the following synopsis: Back To The Drive-in takes viewers behind the scenes to visit eleven unique family-owned drive-ins across the country – including L.A’s Mission Tiki,...

“Back to the Drive-In” is filmmaker April Wright’s second documentary about drive-ins, following 2013’s “Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the American Drive-In Movie,” but she’s not milking a good thing with a rehash of the definitive first film. Rather than again explore the overall rise and fall and semi-rise of the phenomenon, in this terrific sequel, she’s looking at the big picture but also the smaller one, painting a series of portraits of 11 different ozoners across the U.S. It’s a warm and funny and even touching tribute to the fans and especially the ma-and-pa owner-operators who keep al fresco film alive.

Chicago – One of the realizations that came out of the pandemic was that Drive-In movie theaters are still viable. When regular theaters closed, the Drive-In filled the void where they were available. Filmmaker April Wright has had a lifelong love for the Drive-In, and has explored their revival and challenges afterward in “Back to the Drive-In.” The documentary will have a limited two-day run at the historic Music Box Theatre in Chicago, click Drive-in Dreams for showtimes.

Wright drove cross country to 11 Drive-Ins, both old-timey established and brand spanking new. What she found was a commonality between the owners and a love for what they do, or in some cases a reflection of a life in the business. What she also found was the magic of the Drive-In – beyond the infamous teenager reputation – that spoke to the future of this legendary way to see movies … which began over 100 years ago.

"The money's not the best, but my job is the best." An official trailer has debuted for a documentary film titled Back to the Drive-In, from filmmaker April Wright. She's the same filmmaker behind two other movie theater docs previously - Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the American Drive-in Movie and Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the Movie Palace. With the return of Drive-Ins during the 2020 + 2021 pandemic lockdowns, of course someone decided to go out and make a doc about this. When the pandemic hit, drive-ins were suddenly the only safe venue in town, with press coverage about how drive-ins are "back," and how they are thriving. But this film goes behind the headlines to tell the truth, spending a whole night with 11 very different drive-ins in 8 states all over the country, from preparations before the customers arrive, to selling tickets, opening the snack bar, and getting the movie up on screen,...

Have you ever watched Charlize Theron, Lynda Carter, Michelle Rodriguez, Michelle Yeoh, Brie Larson, Pam Grier, or Carrie-Anne Moss in an action flick and wonder, "How the hell did they do that?" Based on the best-selling book by Mollie Gregory, the new documentary, Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, aims (in part) to show us. Directed by April Wright (Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the Movie Palace), this exploration goes into who these stuntwomen are --- and why and how they do what they do. The doc also goes deeper into the industry's darker side. Namely, that means sexism. As always in any male-dominated environment or industry, there's a huge group of men that push back, blacklist, or even sabotage women --- especially when they...

"They fought so hard for us to get here... now we don't have that luxury of not being able to do something." Shout Factory has revealed the official trailer for a kick ass filmmaking documentary called Stuntwomen, made by producer / director April Wright. The film's full title is Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story and it will be available to watch this September. An action-documentary about the evolution of stunt women from The Perils of Pauline (1914) and beyond. Featuring narration (and interviews) by Michelle Rodriguez. The documentary goes "behind-the-scenes and introduces us to the female stunt performers who drive the action and thrills of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster movies from the silent age of cinema to present day." This looks awesome! Seriously. I dig all the behind-the-scene glimpses, but it's also so great to hear from these badass, fearless women taking on these intense, dangerous stunts. Fire up the trailer below.

The onscreen exploits of stuntwomen, and their off-screen battles for fair and equal treatment, is explored in Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, a new documentary from director April Wright for Shout! Studios that debuts September 22 on digital platforms.
Narrated by Fast & Furious franchise star Michelle Rodriquez and based on Mollie Gregory’s 2015 best-seller, the film chronicles the lives of women who perform the stunts in some of Hollywood’s biggest action sequences — from the early days of silent movies to today’s blockbusters. The producers are Stephanie Austin, Michael Gruskoff and Marion Rosenberg.
“These unheralded heroines are the generations of stuntwomen who risked their lives in front of the camera, while behind it they fought for equal rights with male stunt performers, battled sexism and harassment, sustained life-threatening injuries and returned to the fray after each battle,” the producing team said in a joint statement.

Aside from the very first opening night activities at Bentonville, the first film I attended was a work-in-progress doc called Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story. The director April Wright is still working on the final cut so there's still time to get more focused (it was easy to imagine this as an even fuller miniseries as it's trying to covering a lot!) but whatever it'll be in its final form will be entertaining...

11 Drive-in Movie Movies (in alphabetical order):
Blue Thunder (1983) One key sequence in this thriller about a high-tech urban surveillance helicopter is staged (during the daylight hours) at the Pickwick Drive-in in Burbank, California, which was razed in 1990. The Pickwick, due to its proximity to the local movie studios, hosted many movie premieres, most famously that of Blazing Saddles in 1974, for which everyone in attendance was on horseback.
Brokeback Mountain (2005) In one scene after his return from Brokeback Mountain, Ennis (Heath Ledger) takes his wife Alma (Michelle Williams) on a date to a drive-in movie theater, which is lovingly (if briefly) recreated in the film. And it’s a very effective moment of movie magic too—the scene wasn’t filmed at a drive-in at all, but instead a converted softball field in Alberta, Canada.
Cars (2006) During the end credits, the cars are shown at the drive-in cinema enjoying parodies...
