"You want the truth? I'll give you the truth." Crackle has released an official trailer for a documentary called Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story, which will debut streaming as a five-part series about the story behind video game giant Nintendo. The focus seems to be on the rise and prominence of Nintendo in America, not so much its origins in Japan, as told through interviews with many game industry veterans. We love Nintendo and good docs and can't help posting about this anyway. Via Nintendo Enthusiast, the film features interviews with "actor Wil Wheaton, actor Alison Haislip, Nintendo of America co-founder Ron Judy, Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, former Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske, former Nintendo CEO Reggie Fils-Aimé, and Xbox head Phil Spencer. But there are even more knowledgeable industry figures in the documentary where that came from, such as Digital Eclipse Editorial Director Chris Kohler, Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski,...

Tom Kalinske, Sega of America's CEO in its 90s heyday, weighs in on the company's "wrong decisions", including a venture with Sony...
When Tom Kalinske was at the head of Sega's American arm, the company was in rude health, with the Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis) proving a strong contender against the Super Nintendo. But the glory days wouldn't last forever; the 32X add-on for the Mega Drive failed to sell, the console's successor, the Sega Saturn, couldn't compete with the arrival of Sony's PlayStation, and the Dreamcast proved to be Sega's final piece of hardware before it bowed out of the market for good at the end of the millennium.
Kalinske left Sega in 1996, apparently in frustration at how the company was being run by those over in Japan. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Kalinske gave his opinions about Sega's path over the past couple of decades, leading up...

As nominated by our writers, here are the books of 2014 we can’t recommend highly enough…
Closing the final page on the very best books leaves you with a single urge: to share it. We’re talking about the kind of books that make you want to follow strangers down the road, tugging at their elbow and saying “seriously, you’ve got to read this”.
Here then, is our equivalent of doing that. These are the books published in 2014 that our writers felt compelled to share. If there’s one that you feel similarly enthused about, feel free to recommend away in the comments section...
Half A King – Joe Abercrombie
Unless you’ve been living in hermit-like seclusion recently, you can’t help but notice that Young Adult fiction is having its moment. Not even a genre a few years ago, it burst into the public consciousness with a flurry...

Seth Rogen is a busy man. When he is not testifying before a Senate Committee to highlight the desperate need for Alzheimer’s research and funding, he is making three-picture deals through his production company, Point Grey, with the prolific Scott Rudin Productions. The commitment will see Point Grey (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver) team up with Scott Rudin Productions (Scott Rudin and Eli Bush) to create two narrative versions of documentaries for Sony, and a comedy feature with the gang from Workaholics.
Firstly, there’s Brooklyn Castle. Screenwriter Will Reiser and director Jonathan Levine (both from the 2011 Point Grey production 50/50) will make a narrative version of the award-winning 2012 documentary of the same name, which was directed by Katie Dellamagiore. It tells the story of Intermediate School 318 in Brooklyn, New York, and its after-school chess program. Despite deep budget cuts to the inner-city public school – where 65% students live...

Sony Pictures and producer Scott Rudin have acquired Blake J. Harris’ upcoming book “Console Wars” and tapped Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to co-write and direct the behind-the-scenes tale of Nintendo’s battle with upstart video game maker Sega, the book’s U.K. publisher announced Monday. Atlantic Books will publish the business thriller “Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle That Defined a Generation” in August. Sega was a small, scrappy company led by an unlikely visionary in Tom Kalinske when it took on gaming juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry. Also read: Seth Rogen, James Franco,...

There are certain rivalries that never die, no matter how much time has passed, no matter what has happened in the world. Coke vs. Pepsi. Rocky Balboa vs. Ivan Drago. The Harlem Globetrotters vs. The Washington Generals. And then there’s the battle that raged on in the early 1990s, still lasting until this day, between the people who loved their Sega gaming systems, and the people sitting firmly in camp Nintendo. Best bros and collaborators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have recognized the significance of this era of gaming and are taking Console Wars to the big screen, a film that chronicles the deep, dark war between the established company with beloved franchises (Nintendo) and the scrappy arcade folks with big dreams and creative characters — Sega, who re-entered the scene with the Sega Mega Drive. Based on the book of the same name by Blake J. Harris, Console Wars starts off in 1990 with the arrival of...

The creative partnership between Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg has led to many successful collaborations. Their most recent effort was This Is The End, which was absolutely hysterical and one of my favorite films from 2013. Currently, the duo is hard at work on Sausage Party, an animated comedy coming next year. Though production is still underway on that project, Rogen and Goldberg are already looking towards the future and according to Collider, they will be adapting Console Wars for their next outing together.
Based on the novel of the same name by Blake J. Harris, Scott Rudin will be producing with Goldberg and Rogen set to write and direct. As you can probably tell, the story follows the 1990s console war between Sony and Nintendo. You can check out the full plot summary below, courtesy of Amazon:

Video games continue to attract the attention of Hollywood, but this time instead of adapting one into a feature film, the games themselves will become the subject as Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are teaming to write and direct Console Wars based on the non-fiction book by Blake Harris, examining the rise of Sega in the face of Nintendo in the early '90s. Harris' book will hit bookshelves on May 13, 2014. Here's the synopsis: Following the success of The Accidental Billionaires and Moneyball comes Console Wars--a mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry. In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But...
