Smith-Cameron, Timothy Simons, Kim Shaw, John Cullum, Morgan Spectator and Jayson Warner Smith New York filmmaker Antonio Campos brings to the silver screen the story of Christine Chubbuck, the 1970s TV reporter who worked for Wtog and Wxlt-tv in Sarasota, and committed suicide during a live television broadcast. The frightful event was announced by Chubbuck with composure as she pulled the trigger, right after saying: “In keeping with Channel 40′s policy of bringing you the latest in ‘blood and guts’, and in living color, you are going to see another first — attempted suicide.” [ Read More ]

Jesse Shapiro's debut feature concerns two young friends spending a day aimlessly wandering the streets of Los Angeles. A veritable love letter to the city in which it's set, Nobody Walks in La feels like a more mobile and less intellectual variation on My Dinner With Andre. But despite its decidedly modest nature, the film — as aimless as the pair's wanderings — has its charms, thanks in large part to the appealing performances by its two leads.

You’ve heard of it, haven’t you? Hollywood’s double vision? It’s a tendency that so often results in two duelling features emerging into the limelight that center on the same subject matter, and can range from fantastical adventures (Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman) to more action-oriented spectacle (White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen). At Sundance Film Festival, it occurred again, and this time involves two pictures based on the life and times of Christine Chubbuck.
On this occasion, it is director Antonio Campos that is behind the lens, placing Rebecca Hall in the role of former Florida news reporter Christine Chubbuck. It’s pegged for release in early October, with today’s reveal trailer showcasing Chubbuck’s spiral into depression that would result in her infamous suicide circa 1974. Harrowing stuff, but it does include a standout performance from Hall, who unfairly missed out...

Easily the strangest coincidence at Sundance this year was the emergence of two films about Christine Chubbuck, a reporter who shot herself on the air in 1974: Robert Greene’s “Kate Plays Christine” and Antonio Campos’ “Christine.” Greene’s quasi-documentary, which stars indie mainstay Kate Lyn Sheil in the title role, hit theaters first, while Campos’ more conventional drama is set to arrive next month. Watch its trailer below.

Rebecca Hall delivers an affecting performance as a woman at her wit’s end in the film, which is sometimes difficult to watch as it charts her downward mental trajectory. The trailer somewhat underplays this at first, beginning in lighthearted fashion before showing Chubbuck’s descent into depression.

After the formally rigorous character studies of Afterschool and Simon Killer, director Antonio Campos is back with Christine. His first feature based on a true story — also the basis of this summer’s stellar genre-defying documentary Kate Plays Christine — it follows the final weeks of the life of Christine Chubbuck (Rebecca Hall), a Florida-based news reporter who committed suicide live on air in the summer of 1974. Also led by Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts, Maria Dizzia, Timothy Simons, J. Smith-Cameron, and Kim Shaw, an intense first trailer has now arrived ahead of the film’s release next month.
As we said in our review, “Hall, in one of her best performances, embodies Christine with searing intensity, staring blankly while her co-workers offer simple questions and in one remarkable scene, puzzling a woman offering many different solutions to help her situation. Chicago – Sometimes you just need a break, that small window of opportunity to burst through and make the mark. Actor David Dastmalchian knows all about that phenomenon, as he produced and starred in his semi-autobiographical film “Animals,” and got the break of a lifetime landing a role in the film, “The Dark Knight.”
Dastmalchian is a consummate and enthusiastic gentleman, a performer who works hard, but has a humble and appealing attitude of gratitude. His star is ascending further this summer as he scored another role in a superhero epic, this time for Marvel Films, alongside Paul Rudd in “Ant-Man.” David Dastmalchian and director Collin Schiffli will also make a Chicago appearance this week (Friday, May 22nd, 2015) for the Chicago Opening Night screening of “Animals,” part of a limited nationwide release. [Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of Indie Film Month. Today's pick, "Animals," is available now On Demand. Need help finding a movie to watch? Let TWC find the best fit for your mood here.] The initial scenes featuring young couple Bobbie (Kim Shaw) and Jude (David Dastmalchian) in director Colin Schiffli's "Animals" are so precious that it comes as a shock to discover that they're both heroin addicts. Living out of a decrepit car parked near the Chicago Zoo, Bobbie and Jude team up to keep their habit alive, which at first provides them with enough confidence to ignore the downward spiral they're trapped within. By letting the troubles creep in, Schiffli's accomplished first feature — scripted by Dastmalchian — makes their conundrum both accessible and intimately unsettling at once. At first, however, their routine flows along as if they've mastered the con artistry keeping...

This extra-rewarding if occasionally trying film opens with a slow-gaited nocturnal entrance into an ER. David Dastmalchian will appear in this summer's new Marvel franchise Ant-Man, but Animals is probably way more important to him, considering he wrote it. The premise — homeless drug addicts in love — is depressing, but as directed by Collin Schiffli, the film has warmth and humor, ultimately conveying a sense of redemptive hope that Dastmalchian likely brings to the table. He plays Jude, a junkie who lives in a car with the love of his life, Bobbie (Kim Shaw, who's great). At the film's outset, the pair are in relatively good shape, affectionate and playful despite homelessness, but living close to the edge of their resources and the bottom of their stash. Their marginal life is financed with petty theft and clever cons — they're both educ...

Even if you don't know the name, you'd likely recognize David Dastmalchian. He's bagged roles in movies like Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and Denis Villeneuve's "Prisoners," and later this summer you'll see him in "Ant-Man." He's also a budding screenwriter, and his latest film "Animals" made its debut last spring at SXSW where he received a Special Jury Award for Courage In Storytelling. This weekend, you can see what impressed the jury in Austin. Starring Dastmalchian alongside Kim Shaw with Collin Schiffli directing, the film tracks a Chicago couple weighted down by addiction and a life-altering setback. And as you'll see in this clip, it's a highly visual effort that gets up close with the characters, from swooning highs to bottomless lows. "Animals" opens in limited release on May 15th. Watch below.

Chicago – One of the best local independent films recently shot in Chicago is the story of two lost souls entitled “Animals.” The Midwest Independent Film Festival will present the film on their usual “first Tuesday” program on June 3rd, 2014, at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema in Chicago.
“Animals” is directed by Collin Schiffili, and was written by David Dastmalchian – who also portrays lead character Jude – based on his own experiences. The film co-stars Kim Shaw as Bobbie, Jude’s lover and co-dependent drug addict. The achingly raw journey of the couple is a stark and harrowing look at addiction. Director Schiffli also uses the City of Chicago as a character in the film, going to the back alleys and seamier underside of the urban landscape.

The initial scenes featuring young couple Bobbie (Kim Shaw) and Jude (David Dastmalchian) in director Colin Schiffli's "Animals" are so precious that it comes as a shock to discover that they're both heroin addicts. At first, however, their routine flows along as if they've mastered the con artistry keeping them afloat: They spend their days stealing money by relying on convoluted schemes involving fake prostitution and misdirection — at one point stealing an item, pretending it's lost and collecting the finder's fee. Whenever their antics yield more money, they immediately spend...

Austin — Two intelligent, self-aware lovers who once belonged to the middle class endure a dehumanizing, criminal existence in Animals, Collin Schiffli's portrait of a partnership in addiction. Grimy and sad but not sensationalistic, the debut feature is like Drugstore Cowboy drained of its hipness and sex appeal -- not a bad thing, certainly, but also not something that ensures strong commercial prospects beyond a limited arthouse run. David Dastmalchian and Kim Shaw play Jude and Bobbie, who live in a car and employ a catalog of little scams to earn money for heroin: selling shoplifted CDs, crashing weddings and

Tony winner Harriet Harris (Desperate Housewives) has been cast in NBC’s multi-camera pilot Lifesaver. The odd couple comedy centers on the uptight, controlling and a bit neurotic Dr. Graham Permenter (Cgristian Borle) and loose cannon Leon (Jonathan Ryland), who become inextricably linked after Leon saves Graham’s life by giving him a kidney. Harris, repped by Brs/Gage, plays Christian’s mother Liz Parmenter. She recently finished a run in the original cast of Cinderella on Broadway. Related: 2014 NBC Pilots Dana DeLorenzo and Kim Shaw have booked NBC’s comedy pilot Two To Go. It centers on longtime best friends Kurt (Michael Stahl-David) and Laura (Christine Woods), who grapple with the challenges of modern-day dating while their group of friends try to prove that they are destined to be together. Check out this clip from dark drama "Animals," directed by Collin Schiffli, exclusive to Thompson on Hollywood! and ahead of its South by Southwest premiere. It stars Kim Shaw and David Dastmachian as a young couple bouncing between homelessness and a fantasy life of crime and addiction. "Animals" tells the story of Bobbie (Kim Shaw) and Jude (David Dastmalchian), a young couple living in their broken-down car parked alongside Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, as they masterfully con and steal in an attempt to stay one step ahead of their addiction until they are ultimately forced to face the reality of their situation.

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

The Good Wife season 4 premiere isn’t for two weeks but we have a sneak peek at what will be going on in episode 2. Following on with the theme of The Clash song lyrics the second episode is called “And the Law Won” (episode one is “I Fought the Law”) so this doesn’t spell a whole lot of good for all those at Lockhart Gardner. Spoilers ahead.
Maura Tierney’s character Maddie Hayward will be introduced in this second episode and Hayward is an influential Chicago millionaire who Eli (Alan Cumming) targets as a donor for Peter's (Chris Noth) gubernatorial campaign. As you can see from the promo photos Maggie will also be interacting with her former E.R. co-star as well as Diane (Christine Baranski) so will she have dealings with Lockhart Gardner as well as Peter?

It may be the end of the road for MTV's I Just Want My Pants Back. The cable channel has cancelled the romantic comedy series after one year but the show could live on to see season two.
Based on the book by David J. Rosen, I Just Want My Pants Back revolves around a group of twenty-something hipsters who try to figure out dating and the rest of life in Brooklyn. The cast includes Peter Vack, Elisabeth Hower, Jordan Carlos, Kim Shaw, and Sunkrish Bala. The show was initially developed for NBC.
Pants was previewed back in August 2011 and drew a very healthy 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.13 million total viewers. In retrospect, MTV execs may be wishing that they'd started airing the rest of the season right away.

The film is being done in partnership with the National Hot Rod Association. Robin Broidy and Rhino Films’ Stephen Nemeth are producing. In case there was ever any doubt about the awesomeness of "I Just Want My Pants Back," tonight's Season 1 finale brings out the absolute best in the show. We were laughing out loud by minute three, when Jason (Peter Vack) has a life changing moment -- for real -- while sitting on a toilet.
No, that's not where he encounters his much sought-after fling, Jane. When Jason and Jane do reunite later on, sparks fly -- but things may not end quite as Jason imagined they would. (When do they ever, really?) Elsewhere, Paul is making himself a little too comfortable in Tina's (Kim Shaw) apartment... and in her life. Feeling suffocated, she makes some less-than-ideal choices.
Last week, we saw Eric (Jordan Carlos) grappling with the decision to stay in med school or not. In the finale, Stacey (Elisabeth Hower) -- convinced he's bound for "hobodom" -- stages a...

MTV's new show "I Just Want My Pants Back" immediately sets up a premise: Don't lose your pants to a hot girl after a steamy one-night stand.
Of course, those pants go on to act as a metaphor about a group of twentysomethings who live, love and party in Brooklyn. For the rest of the series, it seems, Jason (Peter Vack's character) is just trying to find that perfect girl, the perfect job and his lost set of trousers.
In fact, all the characters seem to be trying to nail down that special something, whatever it is. And, if you think that what you've seen so far is saucy, from what the "Pants Back" cast tells us,...

The characters on MTV's new scripted series "I Just Want My Pants Back" are young, occasionally romantically challenged and always up for a good time. The show, set in New York, is a nonstop party that follows the lives of several twentysomethings trying to find love and find themselves in the Big Apple.
The characters each play a role (sassy, neurotic, lustful) in their circle of friends, the same way that those other "Friends" did back in the 1990s. The show focuses on Jason, Tina and the rest of their Brooklyn-dwelling crew as they struggle with unemployment and general disaffection. But are the actors anything like their characters on the show? MTV News investigates.

In I Just Want My Pants Back, MTV’s upcoming young-adult comedy, Jason Strider is a typical twentysomething living in Brooklyn–torn between what star Peter Vack calls “immature desires” and the responsibilities that come with living on your own. And in that oft-experienced life stage lies a really funny story, he says.
“As so many people who are in Jason’s position when they first enter into the adult world realizes, ‘Oh my God, I’m actually less equipped to deal with these issues than I thought I was,’ or, in fact, ‘I’m being presented with issues that I never could have foreseen.

Shows like "Gossip Girl" and "Law & Order" depict two very different versions of New York City -- the glittery, polished wealth and the grime and crime of the underbelly. MTV's latest scripted offering, "I Just Want My Pants Back," features neither of those things.
The series, based on the novel by David J. Rosen, dives into Brooklyn, unapologetically spotlighting the indifference and boredom that plagues the oft-parodied hipster population. At the heart of the story is Jason (Peter Vack), a sort of Seth Cohen on a diet of ramen and Pbr whose uninspiring entry level job is just his way of working for the weekend.
The true breakout of the show, though, is Kim Shaw as his best friend Tina, who has somehow discovered the secret to having direction and having fun. Lots and lots of fun. She's got the best one-liners and the best hair, and we can't help...

But unlike Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein's cleverly crafted satire, "Pants" celebrates the hipster in a way that only MTV could.
