Pj Harvey said working with Albini on 1992’s Dry “changed the course of my life. He taught me so much about music, and life. Steve was a great friend – wise, kind and generous. I am so grateful.”

After launching in 2023, Live Nation’s “On the Road Again” program is set to continue throughout 2024.
The initiative, launched with Willie Nelson and named after one of his most iconic songs, began with the elimination of merchandise fees at all Live Nation venues, a move that allows artists to keep 100% of the profits of on-site sales. What’s more, each headliner and supporting act receives $1,500 in gas and travel cash for each Live Nation venue appearance. Since launching, “On the Road Again” has supported over 4,000 artists.
The details of the program were informed by feedback from touring artists, especially emerging acts that depend on touring for income, and the specific challenges they face. The Live Nation team behind the program also incorporated the perspectives of those working around artists and venue operators in an effort to support life on tour from all angles.

Tom Morello, Amanda Palmer, Speedy Ortiz, Kimya Dawson, and more have signed an open letter calling for the restoration of net neutrality, stressing the benefits of an open internet for artists.
Net neutrality, as initially codified during the Obama administration in 2015, broadly established regulations for a more open, accessible internet: The rules ensured that internet providers couldn’t do things like restrict access to certain content, slow or accelerate connection speeds, or hamstring connectivity for customers who didn’t pay a premium fee.

Falling in Reverse frontman Ronnie Radke went on a profanity-laced onstage tirade against the very venue his band was playing on Friday night (December 8th). The singer lambasted The Armory in Minneapolis for asking for a 25% cut of the band’s merch that night, leading Radke to refuse to sell any items at the club.
Radke and company were playing the 93X Nutcracker radio festival along with Daughtry and Sleep Theory. Before launching into the song “Popular Monster,” the vocalist took some time to address the crowd.
“If you haven’t noticed, there’s none of our merch in the back,” he began. “It has nothing to do with the radio station, it has to do with this venue. This venue is trying to charge us 25% of our fees. … What that would mean is that we’d have to charge you guys way more to make any money. So what I did was [holds middle finger up], ‘Fuck them!

The National Independent Venue Association (Niva) has issued a statement in response to Live Nation’s new initiative aimed at providing financial support to touring artists.
As part of its “On the Road Again” program, Live Nation announced that it will no longer take cuts of artist merchandise sold at any of the club-sized venues it operates. The company also promised to offer $1,500 stipends per show to all headlining and support acts at their venues for the purpose of covering tour expenses like gas and lodging. Niva argues, however, that these short-term benefits will harm independent venues in the long run.
In a statement issued to Consequence on Wednesday (September 26th), Niva said Live Nation’s initiative is a “a calculated attempt” to steer artists away from smaller independent venues in favor of the venues Live Nation operates.

Live Nation has announced it will no longer take cuts of merchandise sold by artists playing any of its club-sized venues. What’s more, through the end of the year, the company will offer $1,500 stipends per show to all headlining and support acts.
The decision arrives as part of a new developing-artist program the company has launched with country legend, Willie Nelson. The program, dubbed “On the Road Again” in honor of Nelson, is designed to give a helping hand to smaller, developing artists, who have faced increased economic difficulties in recent years. Now, not only have merchandise fees — which have been known to eat up to 15% – 30% of an artist’s merch sales — been removed, but artists will receive an additional $1,500 stipend to cover “gas and travel,” and crews, local promoters, tour reps, and more will all be doled out unspecified bonuses.

Jeff Rosenstock has broken down the exorbitant merch cuts being taken by some venues on his upcoming North American tour to explain why he’ll have to charge more at certain dates and critique the corporations that control the touring industry.
“Here are the merch cuts being taken by the venues on this upcoming tour,” Rosenstock wrote in the caption of an Instagram post with the breakdown. “This is going to cause us to sell our merch for higher prices than we’d like to at certain venues. We think that sucks.”
Rosenstock specifically targeted “big corporations” like Aeg and Live Nation, who bought up “many of the types of venues that we play” during the pandemic. “Dodging these super high cuts is nearly impossible,” he explained.

Jeff Rosenstock has released “Healmode,” a contemplative acoustic track that serves as the latest preview of his fifth studio album, Hellmode. Stream it below.
On “Healmode,” Rosenstock describes his appreciation for the rain while living in California during the raging wildfires that tore through the state in 2020. “When it’s gone the air will clear,” he sings over acoustic guitar, woodwinds, vibraphone, and synths. “And we’ll have so much more to see/ The stores will be filled up with/ People trying to buy their groceries.”
In a statement, Rosenstock said moving to Los Angeles with his wife in January 2020 completely changed how he thought about the rain, which used to get him “down in the dumps” when he was a New Yorker. “Ash fell from the sky and our little air quality apps would be emblazoned with a dark red icon wearing a gas mask. Jeff Rosenstock is back with his first new music of the year by way of the rousing single “Liked U Better.” Along with it, the punk rocker has announced an extensive run of 2023 tour dates.
Recorded in summer 2022, “Liked U Better” is an adrenaline-fueled pop-punk ripper dedicated to anybody who just refuses to be forgotten, despite all your futile attempts to exile them from your memory. Whether that persona non grata is an ex-partner, a disagreeable coworker, or a less-than-ideal roommate, Rosenstock’s singalong chorus acts as a vehicle for taking out all that aggression.
“Thought of you again and I don’t wanna tell my friends/ Don’t wanna scare ‘em off and don’t wanna be judged,” Rosenstock laments, although that shame seems to dwindle by the time he belts the refrain: “I liked you better when you weren’t on my mind!”

For most artists, standing on stage at New York’s Lincoln Center next to a gaggle of celebrities and staring out into a packed audience as your gear unceremoniously craps out on you would be nothing short of a living nightmare. A tribute album to Adam Schlesinger being released today on Bandcamp includes cover songs by two actors who collaborated with the late songwriter on projects, Rachel Bloom and Sarah Silverman, as well as contemporaries of Schlesinger’s from the rock world like Kay Hanley, Nada Surf and Tanya Donnelly.
“Saving for a Custom Van,” which takes its name from the title track of the essential Fountains of Wayne album “Utopia Parkway,” is a 31-track collection that covers the breadth of Schlesinger’s performing and songwriting career. Besides familiar FoW songs from the late ’90s and 2000s, the collection also includes songs from his six-season run as the core house writer for TV’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” the films “Music and Lyrics” and “That Thing You Do!,” and Schlesinger’s other long-standing band, Ivy. Even two of the songs he wrote for “Josie and the Pussycats” figure into the expansive track list.
