“Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” (2013) and “Dangal” (2016) are both biographical films based on the lives of Indian sportspersons. However, while representing actual events, the two films — either directly or indirectly — highlight various themes about sports arenas in India being extremely gendered spaces. The most important of these become the strict creation and demarcation of the feminine and masculine binaries, something that goes on to shape the overall narratives of the films.

Even though nationalism, as a concept, remains central in both movies, something that comes in its way is the masculine ego of different sportspersons. In “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, this happens when the main character, Milkha Singh (Farhan Akhtar), who has all the abilities to win an international medal for his country, is roughed up by his fellow athletes as they fear competition. Mumbai, Sep 3 (Ians) “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is the greatest Indian track and field athlete ever?”
Till a few years back, as an answer to this question, some would have said Milkha Singh. Some others might have taken the name of Sriram Singh, some would have said P.T. Usha and some may have said Anju Bobby George.
All of them are legends of Indian track and field who have scripted golden chapters in the history of Indian sports.
But in the last few years, there is one athlete who has surged ahead in the race.
Ever since he won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has taken the lead in the poll.
And, after winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Budapest on August 27, Chopra has clearly established himself as the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T), because...

‘Bhed Chaal’ is a Hindi proverb very much used in relation to the Hindi film industry. It means that one huge success is followed by numerous other attempts. Original ideas are at a premium in the Hindi film industry. The makers either depend on a foreign film, or a novel, or a South Indian film for a subject.
Filmmakers always want to play safe because the risk factor is always high. The distributor, while being wined and dined, gets a sales pitch, like “Zanjeer se kam nahi hamari picture…” and such. Many smaller-budget imitations of ‘Sholay’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewaar’ and other such films flooded the market. That is to say, if one action film worked, many more were certain to follow.
With the introduction of the video format followed by CDs, the trend changed to copying Hollywood films. A star was sent two videos or discs to watch, and they were...

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film has high ambition but dodges complexity in favour of overheated melodrama
Partly set in the Mumbai underworld, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s boxing drama aims at Raging Bull grit but has an unfortunately irresistible drift towards late-Rocky melodrama. Farhan Akhtar – in his second sporting collaboration with Mehra after the 2013 biopic of sprinter Milkha Singh – plays Aziz Ali, orphan and now burly debt collector from the hard-knock port of Dongri. After patching him up a few too many times, winsome but no-nonsense doctor Ananya (Mrunal Thakur) approves when he starts unleashing the beast down at the boxing gym run by fearsome coach Nana Prabhu (Paresh Rawal). A couple of training montages later, and Aziz is a light-heavyweight contender, with his very own snappy moniker: Toofaan (“storm” in Hindi).
With his mop of curly hair and slugger’s arms, Akhtar has a dry, easy charm, like an Indian Tom Jones,...

Since the time Sacred Games released on the Ott streaming platform Netflix, there has been a debate on whether the content on these platforms should be kept in check or let to run loose.
The series had never-seen-before morbidity, unnatural sex, filthiest of foul language and yet delivered nothing that one could take home. Taking home was a phrase much related to films as there were times when one walked out of a cinema hall humming one of the film's songs or repeating its dialogue. What do you take home from, say, Sacred Games, Pataal Lok, Mirzapur, Mastram and such?
This column just recently discussed the limitations of the Cinematograph Act by which the authority of the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) extends only till rating and certifying a film product that is meant for public exhibition.
In such an event, there is no check on what passes as Ott content.
