In today’s film news roundup, the Animation Guild steps up with a $210,000 donation for Iatse members, Fathom Events hires a former AMC executive, the Vail Film Festival goes virtual and Breaking Glass comes on board Gabriel Sousa’s “Waking Up Dead.”
Guild Donation
The Animation Guild is donating $210,000 to support International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees members impacted by the coronavirus pandemic through the Motion Picture & Television Fund and the Los Angeles Federation of Labor.
The guild, which operates as Iatse Local 839, noted that while most sectors of the entertainment industry are suffering significant job loss due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of its members’ work has not been impacted and guild membership has increased since the last quarter. As a result, the guild’s executive board determined that the organization should pay it forward by supporting those who are in need.

Tagline: "The New Civil War Has Begun." Directors: Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. Writers: Nick Damici and Graham Reznick Cast: Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow and Angelic Zambrana. Bushwick is an action thriller, which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Starring former pro-wrestler Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect, 2012), the film tries to answer the question: what if Texas seceded from the United States? Naturally, they would attack Bushwick! a suburb of Brooklyn. Writers Nick Damici (Stakeland II) and Graham Reznick have offered a modern retelling of the Grimm Brothers' Little Red Riding Hood, as Lucy (Snow) attempts to get to Granny's house. The path is littered with gunfire as the big bad wolf gets in the way. As well, much of the film is shot via long takes, with a steadicam. This shooting technique puts the viewer right in close with the characters. Meanwhile, there is a...

Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (Cooties), this pacey U.S. invasion thriller picks up points for its premise, performances and photography, but the script passes up the chance for some political commentary.
The film’s extremely strong opening has college student Lucy (Brittany Snow) getting off the subway in Bushwick, New York and suddenly finding herself in the middle of a war zone, with armed militia on the streets. Dodging the hails of gunfire, Lucy is rescued by hulking ex-Marine Stupe (Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Dave Bautista), who agrees to help her make it to her grandmother’s house, a few blocks away. However, they soon discover that the situation is worse than they thought...

Film history is littered with films depicting the Civil War, but not many that imagine what would happen if another similar division in the United States broke out. We’ll get one this summer with Bushwick, which comes from directors Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. Edited together to look like it’s a single take, Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow lead the Brooklyn-set action thriller and now the first trailer has arrived.
“Just because you can make a film seemingly in one take doesn’t mean you should,” we said in our review. “In fact, the seams of Bushwick are so obvious I hope if it does enjoy a theatrical release, the film’s “cuts” ––often pushing the camera against a wall or into a dark hallway before magically adjusting the aperture — can inspire a drinking game at the Alamo or Nitehawk. Drinking game or not: beware, it’s going to be a sloppy evening.

In Bushwick’s opening minutes grad-student Lucy (Brittany Snow) has her boyfriend die in an explosion and finds herself in the middle of a war zone on the streets of Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighbourhood. An unidentified military force is indiscriminately massacring the residents of Bushwick and causing chaos on the streets. It’s a heart-pounding start to Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s gritty B-movie which offers impressively staged action and an intriguing premise, but is let down by uninspired dialogue and underdeveloped characters.
After Lucy initially emerges onto the besieged streets of Bushwick, she quickly meets ex-Marine Stupe (Dave Bautista) who claims to be on course to Hoboken, New Jersey to reconcile with his wife and children. While initially hesitant to partner up with Lucy, Stupe soon takes her under his wing when she cauterizes his knife wound. When the pair meet up with Lucy’s...

Bushwick, an urban invasion thriller directed by Cooties' Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, played tonight at Cannes in the Directors' Fortnight Features program. Yesterday, Collider debuted three new teaser posters, running with the colors of American patriotism. You will find them below, each a slight variant from the other apart from the color scheme. Bushwick stars Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect), Angelic Zambrana (Precious), and Jeremie Harris ("Legion"). The chilling and poignant tale was written by Nick Damici and Graham Reznick; so long ago they come across as damned prophets now that Bushwick is coming to U.S. cinemas, VOD and Digital HD on August 27th. When Lucy (Brittany Snow) steps off the subway, she walks into an utter bloodbath...

Sometimes the only possible way to guarantee safety during difficult situations is to ally with the unlikeliest of accomplices. That’s certainly true for Brittany Snow’s character in the upcoming action movie, ‘Bushwick,’ as she’s forced to rely on an ex-Marine corpsman, who’s apprehensive about helping her secure her survival. In conjunction with the recent announcement that the drama will have its World Premiere at next month’s Sundance Film Festival, three new images from the movie have been released. Nick Damici and Graham Reznick co-penned the script for ‘Bushwick,’ which was directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. In addition to Snow, the adventure film also features Dave Bautista, Angelic Zambrana, [ Read More ]

As we’ve recently seen comedian Louis C.K. explode into the mainstream with his personal, acute FX show Louie, another funnyman has opted to test out the feature film waters in a similar style. Premiering at Sundance this year, Mike Birbiglia‘s Sleepwalk With Me was one of our favorite films from the festival. Co-written by This American Life‘s Ira Glass, we called the film a ”a surprisingly moving, modest motion picture about chasing dreams and leaving people behind, and how hard it is to do both.”
We’ve got our first look tonight, which does an excellent job at showing a mix of the comedy and drama. And Marc Maron even gets a bit of screentime. Check out the trailer and poster below via Apple for the film also starring Lauren Ambrose, James Rebhorn, Carol Kane , Cristin Milioti, Aya Cash, Lucy DeVito, David Wain, Angelic Zambrana and Loudon Wainwright III.

Girls TV Show Teaser Trailers. Lena Dunham‘s Girls (2011) TV show teaser trailers, produced by Judd Apatow, star Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Chris Eigeman, Angelic Zambrana, and Jemima Kirke. Girls’ plot synopsis: “Created by and starring Lena Dunham (“Tiny Furniture”), the show is a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s. Dunham wrote and directed the pilot of the series, which she executive produces along with Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner.”
Looks funny. I’ll be watching.
More on the Girls‘ production:
Created by Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture) and executive produced by Dunham, Judd Apatow, and Jenni Konner…
And another writer’s opinion on Judd Apatow and the series:
it’s great to see the guy who once helped bring Lindsay Weir to life make his return to television with another hilariously uncomfortable series featuring a smart female lead.

The Mortician is on its way in 3D, and if you're a fan of psychologically thrilling horror, you're in for a treat. Former Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man stars in the lead role (looking like a cross between Carlton from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and 49ers receiver Braylon Edwards). Grindstone Entertainment has picked up the rights to the film, and a new trailer awaits you.
The Mortician, written and directed by Gareth Maxwell Roberts, also stars Edward Furlong, Dash Mihok, Wendell Pierce, Ej Bonilla, Angelic Zambrana, Judy Marte, Dana Fuchs and Cruz Santiago. The 3D film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and has been screened at the German Fantasy Fest as well as the Stiges Film Festival last weekend. It will be featured at the New Orleans Film Festival this coming weekend.
Synopsis:
Alienated and cold, The Mortician (Method Man) processes corpses with steely disregard. He is lonely and isolated.

I have worked furiously to get you guys images from Gareth Maxwell Roberts' The Mortician 3D, but apparently every single person involved has no idea what they're doing. They're so discombobulated that five clips have leaked onto the web featuring interviews and first ever footage. Method Man, Edward Furlong, Dash Mihok, Judy Marte, and Angelic Zambrana all star. The story, which is shot in post-Katrina New Orleans from a script by Roberts, follows the tale of a man emotionally numbed and closed off to the decay and corruption of the city surrounding him. One day he discovers a striking tattoo on the body of a murdered young woman, triggering a sequence of haunting dreams from his childhood and forcing him to confront his emotions.

"Point Break" and "Patriot Games" scribe W. Peter Iliff makes his directorial debut on the project.
Shooting kicks off this week while Mark Canton, Jonathan Sachar, David Hopwood and W.D. Johnson will produce.

Method Man? Really? That's right, good reader. Method is front and center in The Mortician 3D , a project in development since the beginning of 2008 and picked up steam in the latter half of 2009. Well, what you need to know now is that Gareth Maxwell Roberts penned the script and directed the film and he's now in post-production. We've got several photos to share along with a synopsis. 'An Education'"An Education" is a wonderfully bittersweet coming-of-age story featuring a top-notch ensemble. Set in 1961 London, the film recounts what happens when Jenny (Carey Mulligan), a bright but bored high school student, falls in love with David (Peter Sarsgaard), an urbane older man who introduces her to chamber music, art auctions, late-night concerts, and sex. He is also a bit of a con man.Mulligan doesn't hit a false note, conveying the emotional life of a highly intelligent yet profoundly innocent 17-year-old girl. In Jenny's eyes, David is the romantic outsider, more so as he slyly seduces Jenny's reluctant parents—especially Jack, her irascible, buffoonish dad (Alfred Molina). Conceived in broad comic strokes, Jack borders on caricature, yet Molina makes him plausible and, in the end, sympathetic. Jack is misguided but he loves his daughter. Sarsgaard is fine as a warm and loving guy who can't help being a bastard as well.

This is not the usual project we write about, but I just thought it sounded cool enough to mention. THR has announced the cast for The Mortician 3D, produced by Belladonna Productions, from the on-going Afm. Hip-hop star Method Man (last seen in The Wackness) will headline along with Angelic Zambrana (last seen in Precious). Tom Hardy (Bronson) and Edward Furlong (American History X) are also in talks to join as well. The "gritty, urban drama" was written and is being directed by Gareth Maxwell Roberts (Kill Kill Faster Faster). Shooting starts this month in Louisiana. It may sounds bland, but read on for story details. The Mortician 3D is a redemption tale where kindness triumphs over cruelty and falls within the genres of urban noir, contemporary fairytale and psychological thriller. The film is set in the nightmare ghetto of a decaying metropolis and is based around about one man's...
