Entertainment Squad has acquired worldwide rights to Midas and will release the film, the feature debut of writer/director Tj Noel-Sullivan described as “a fresh and socially relevant take on the classic heist genre,” in theaters in the U.S. on June 28.
“The film follows a charismatic college dropout who recruits his best friends to rob the health insurer that denied his mom’s coverage,” said Entertainment Squad, the boutique distribution company founded by industry veteran Shaked Berenson. “After things take a dark turn, the trio must wrestle with the limits of their greed.”
Starring Laquan Copeland (The Dirty South), Preet Kaur (Finding Tony), Federico Parra (series The Equalizer), Lucy Powers (Voyeur), and Bob Gallagher (Bad Senator), the movie was shot in Hartford, Conn., which is nicknamed the “insurance capital of the world.”
The Hartford Film Company, founded by Noel-Sullivan, produced the film alongside Kristina Cuello and Erik Bloomquist.

Back in 1986, Caroline Williams played one of my all-time favorite horror final girls, “Stretch” in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. 90’s pop icon Vanilla Ice stars as himself alongside Australia’s darling Sophie Monk, who is also playing herself in the upcoming action-comedy, Zombie Plane; which also boasts Chuck Norris, starring as Commander Chuck Norris, in the cast – who “mentored and trained Ice to be the deadly secret agent he is today”.
In Zombie Plane, a secret government agency recruits celebrities to be undercover agents, and together they save humanity from an imminent zombie attack.
The film, which is littered with celebrity cameos as well as well-known pop music from the 90s including Vanilla Ice’s own library, was shot earlier this year in Australia with the support of Screen Australia. “The Penguin and the Fisherman,” directed by David Schurmann, and co-written by Kristen Lazarain & Paulina Lagudi Ulrich and cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle is based on the incredible true story of Joao Perei de Souza (Jean Reno), a Brazilian fisherman, who rescues a penguin (DinDim) covered in oil, near death and washed up on a remote island beach off of Brazil, far from his Patagonian home.
After DinDim returns to the wild, Joao is heartbroken — until a year later when DinDim returns. The story of their transcendent friendship and its impact on their little village is one for the ages.
Barraza joins Reno in the co-lead role playing Joao’s resolute wife Maria, who finds new love with her husband, through the spirit...

“When I said this was a yoga retreat, I was sort of not telling the truth,” the trailer for “Doomsday” begins.
As the title may have indicated, there are fewer sun salutations and more sex cult craze at this particular wellness center. Part “Midsommar,” part “Yellowjackets” (check out that Antler Queen crown!), and a whole lot of (alleged) Scientology, Daytime Emmy–nominated limited series “Doomsday” promises salvation in the sexiest — and scariest — way possible.
IndieWire exclusively premiered the new “Doomsday” trailer, introducing audiences to the residents of a millennial cult. Per the official logline, the series portrays how “youthful idealism evolves into deadly extremism” while documenting “the eerie final months leading up to a horrific Jim Jones–style massacre.”
The cast includes Alice Kremelberg (“The Sinner”), Donald Paul (“Queen of the South”), and Mark St. Cyr (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”). The series was nominated for the 2021 Daytime...

WaZabi Films, the Montreal-based sales agent launched by Anick Poirier and Lorne Price, has boarded horror comedy “Red Wings,” one of buzziest and most singular titles at early August’s Frontières Co-Production Market.
Created by executive producer Rhiannon Aarons, a publisher/co-editor on Bob Flanagan’s book “The Book of Medicine,” and Dana Hammer, author of novels such as “Rosemary’s Baby Daddy” and “Dead Viking Rehab,” “Red Wings” turns on Audrina, who gets bitten by a bat and gains an unnatural gift: Killer red bats that fly out of her vagina when she menstruates.
Learning to accept and master her superpower, she gains control of her life and fights evil in the process. Audrina starts the film being stalked by her ex-boyfriend. She now embraces her new bat-friends and sets out for retribution.
Kate Kroll will direct “Red Wings,” which is produced by Anne-Marie Gélinas at EMAfilms.

Ruben Pla, Shaked Berenson and friends in The Horror Crowd
Film criticism is generally focused on the work of individual directors or creative teams, which is odd when you think about it because film, like most creative endeavours, ultimately emerges from community. People talk, share ideas, watch one another’s work, help each other out. There are few more accessible examples of how this works than the horror community, especially that part of it concentrated in and around Hollywood, and it’s this community that actor-turned-director Ruben Pla has sought to capture in his documentary The Horror Crowd. Screening at Frightfest and Grimmfest, the UK’s biggest genre festivals, it has proved a hit with fans. Between the two events, Ruben and I sat down for a chat about the film and the stories it tells.

The film is made very much from an insider’s perspective.

Exclusive: Producer Shaked Berenson has teamed with former Dread Central Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan Barkan to launch the new genre distribution label The Horror Collective. The banner will be under Berenson’s production/distribution outfit Entertainment Squad and Barkan will head the venture which plans to release 10-12 films per year.
Like the name of the distribution label suggests, The Horror Collective is building itself to become a destination that fosters independent horror filmmakers and connect their films to fans. It will also finance and produce original content. The outfit’s inaugural film will be Elza Kephart’s Slaxx, which was the first project financed Entertainment Squad and will be released by The Horror Collective and enter the festival circuit in Q1 2020. Berenson financed and executive produced the Slaxx with long collaborator, Anne-Marie Gélinas of Ema Films.

Exclusive: Gunpowder & Sky has acquired U.S. rights to the Irish sci-fi thriller Sea Fever, the Neasa Hardiman-directed pic that had its world premiere this fall at the Toronto Film Festival. It will now get a U.S. release in early 2020 via G&s’ multiplatform sci-fi label Dust.
Hermione Corfield (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) stars as Siobhan, a young marine biology student who boards a trawler run by a couple. When the ship hits an unseen object, a mysterious bioluminescent force infiltrates the vessel, and the crew begins a fight for survival while marooned at sea.
Hardiman calls her debut feature film “a dreamlike and devastating parable, where a neurodivergent heroine struggles with individual responsibility and threat in our increasingly fragile world.”
Fantastic Films’ Brendan McCarthy and John McDonnell produced in a co-production with Borje Hansson of Bright Pictures (Sweden), Jean-Yves Roubin and Cassandre Warnauts...
