Marvel's "What If...?" is creatively one of the best things to happen to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More than big crossover movie events, more than the many, many TV shows expanding the world through new kinds of characters, it's "What If...?" that really fulfills the potential of the MCU. "Star Wars" didn't become such a massive and beloved franchise with the movies or the shows alone. It did so with the expanded universe of books, games, and comics exploring smaller, weirder aspects of the galaxy. "What If...?" season 1 wasn't perfect, and it still adhered too close to the formula of the McU's films, but it showed promise in how it unleashed the imagination of what was possible in the MCU.
Now, season 2 will attempt to build on that by telling more stories that aren't simply pulled from the McU's films. Take the brief trailer shots of what looks like an...

In Jon Favreau's 2008 film "Iron Man," the title hero (Robert Downey Jr.) was assisted in his high-tech superhero lab by an artificially intelligent butler-like presence named J.A.R.V.I.S. Iron Man's digital butler not only wrangled the hero's complicated engineering projects, but also controlled the even-higher-tech devices in his lab. When Iron Man went out on patrol, J.A.R.V.I.S.'s voice could be heard inside his helmet. J.A.R.V.I.S. was voiced by Paul Bettany. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continued to grow, so too did Iron Man's computerized friend. Eventually, J.A.R.V.I.S. was shunted into an indestructible android body and renamed Vision (also Bettany).
When Vision became sentient and autonomous, that meant Tony Stark had to program a new computer helper, and invented F.R.I.D.A.Y. (voiced by Kerry Condon...

It has taken a full five years but here we are, with "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" just around the corner. Indeed, the sequel to 2018's "Aquaman" is still coming out in December, despite the fact that the ongoing Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes have effectively shut Hollywood down. Be that as it may, director James Wan recently pulled the curtain back on the sequel, including how the main villain Black Manta will be able to go toe-to-toe with Arthur Curry this time around.
/Film's Jenna Busch recently attended a trailer launch event for "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," with Wan in attendance. In James Wan's "Aquaman," Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) struggles with his legacy as heir to Atlantis and overcomes obstacles to claim what is rightfully his. This victory is hard-earned and not without opposition, and this transition will serve as the premise for Wan's "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." Now, as the King of Atlantis, Arthur has to contend with the return of Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and seek help from his estranged family to protect his kingdom. While "Aquaman 2" will lean heavily into the themes of revenge and heroic retribution, director James Wan has also incorporated a primary element from the "Fast and Furious" franchise: family.
In a trailer reveal event for "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" attended by /Film's Jenna Busch, Wan spoke about the themes the sequel embodies, and how family emerges as a key motivator for Arthur in the upcoming film. While explaining this aspect,...

Today finally brings a new full-length trailer for "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," a movie that actually finished principal photography way back in January of 2022. Since then, director James Wan has been busy dealing with release date changes, regime changes at the studio, various rounds of reshoots, and who knows what other headaches behind the scenes. One thing it seems like he wasn't lacking was material to work with, partly because he could fold story elements from a canceled spin-off film into the upcoming sequel.
/Film's own Jenna Busch attended a trailer launch event for "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," where Wan pulled back the curtain on the film. If the production of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" has undergone somewhat of a rocky few years, from significant reshoots to Covid delays to the fallout from the bizarre saga of "The Flash," that's nothing compared to the chaos surrounding the film over at Warner Bros. Discovery. While director James Wan, star Jason Momoa, and the rest of the creative team have been steadily plugging away at the sequel to one of the franchise's most shocking over-performers at the box office, the entire ground upon which the film was meant to stand on has essentially fallen away from beneath its feet. The widely-publicized leadership shakeup put fellow director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran in charge of the whole shebang, which inevitably had ripple effects on a film that now represents a holdover from a previous studio regime.

In John Musker's and Ron Clements' 1989 feature film "The Little Mermaid," the title character Ariel (Jodi Benson) has fallen in love with a human, a stringently verboten act in the mer-world. She longs to attract her human paramour's attention, much to the chagrin of the crab Sebastian (Samuel E. Wright), a servant to the king, her father. In order to convince Ariel that life under the sea is better than life on dry land, Sebastian launches into a hummable (and Academy Award-winning) song called "Under the Sea." He sings about how all the nearby ocean creatures are musically gifted, can all dance, and can all play instruments. The entire vicinity breaks into music hoping to convince Ariel of her misplaced desires. While the Academy may have been convinced that "Under the Sea" was a great song, Ariel was not. She swam away to pursue the man of her dreams.

"The Little Mermaid" is a monumental film in the history of Disney and Western animation at large. John Musker and Ron Clements made drastic changes to Hans Christian Andersen's original Danish fairy tale and delivered a Broadway-style musical extravaganza that saved the studio during their worst and darkest time. This movie helped usher the Disney Renaissance, leading the way for some of their best movies. Even today, "The Little Mermaid" remains a film with not just stunning animation and music, but also a radical message.
But, according to Disney, all that is in the past, because live-action is the future. /Film's own Jenna Busch recently attended a press conference with the filmmakers behind the live-action "The Little Mermaid." This piece contains minor plot details for "The Little Mermaid," which will be familiar to anyone who has seen the original movie. But here's a warning about it nonetheless!
1989's "The Little Mermaid" is truly one of the defining animated films in Disney's long, storied history. It's a classic that resonates to this day, which is why it's getting a live-action remake from director Rob Marshall later this month. A big part of what helps make the original such an enduring classic is the music. The remake does have some new songs in it, and our new, modern Prince Eric even gets to sing one. As for how the filmmakers chose where and when to add those new songs? It all came down to character.

Despite the popular talking point that actors tend to have it easy, film sets can be punishing environments to try and make a living. Time and budget constraints oftentimes turn each and every take into a pressure-packed race against the clock. Tempers can run high as delays, complications, last-minute rewrites, and other unforeseen problems crop up out of nowhere. And that's not even touching on workdays that can stretch up to 18 hours (or more!) depending on the production.
But other times, actors might just find themselves putting their feet up -- quite literally -- for the length of an entire shoot.
Disney's experiment with live-action remakes of beloved animated classics just keeps trucking along, typically earning $1 billion at the box office despite all the kvetching by us cynics online that these movies are ruining the entire art form. It must really feel good to be Jason Momoa. Since his memorable turn as Khal Drogo in "Game of Thrones," Momoa has gone on to join the DC Universe as Aquaman, star in his own Apple+ TV series "See," and appear as the battle-tested warrior Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune." Momoa has certainly proven that he knows how to play the hero, and now he'll get a chance to play the villain in the upcoming blockbuster, "Fast X" opposite Vin Diesel. Momoa is keeping the theme of family going strong in the ongoing action franchise, playing Dante Reyes, the son of Hernan Reyes who died during the bank heist in "Fast Five."

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Created An Ultra-Realistic Chris Pratt Doll For Karen Gillan To Carry
The phrase "movie magic" is thrown around a lot in discussing the process of making the movies that so many of us enjoy. How are these cinematic moments actually brought to life? What goes into making us so thoroughly suspend our disbelief? In the case of director James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," one instance involved creating a super realistic Chris Pratt doll to double as Star-Lord in a key scene.
/Film's own Jenna Busch recently spoke with Pom Klementieff (Mantis) and Karen Gillan (Nebula) in anticipation of the movie's release. Fans may recall the shot at the end of the trailer for "GOTG3" that sees Nebula caring Star-Lord in her arms. It turns out, Gunn and the production created a life-sized, incredibly realistic prop to make that possible. Here's what Gillan had to say about it:

In contrast to a number of "standalone" films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Guardians of the Galaxy" was notable upon its release in 2014 for containing a fantastic ensemble cast right out of the gate (as opposed to 2012's "The Avengers" being built of characters established in earlier films). The film made Chris Pratt a marquee leading man, gave Zoe Saldaña a third famous character who frequents alien planets, and made us believe that a raccoon and a tree could not only talk but sound like Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, respectively.
Yet the biggest surprise of that movie, when it came to the cast, was Dave Bautista's portrayal of the lovably dense Drax the Destroyer. While the film was not Bautista's first turn as a thespian, it put the actor on the proverbial Hollywood map, shifting his public persona from his history as a professional wrestler. Appearing as...

In a modern blockbuster landscape that's weirdly short on great soundtracks, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" albums have been a dependable source of musical excellence for nearly a decade now. The first film's soundtrack was a huge hit that was certified platinum, while the second received a gold certification and was among the most popular albums of the year. Songs including Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling" and Electric Light Orchestra's "Mr. Blue Sky" exploded in popularity thanks to fans playing the catchy tunes on repeat.

Complicated family dynamics are a focal point for a lot of blockbuster entertainment. We all want to feel like we belong. Whether your own family is dysfunctional or healthy and supportive, I think it's just human nature to be drawn to the idea of being accepted and having a place in this world to call your own.
Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy is very much a story about family, both biological and adopted. I haven't seen Vol. 3 yet, but it's clear to see from the first two films that James Gunn keeps returning to that theme with these characters -- and if Vol. 2 is anything to go by, it feels like he's coming to the conclusion that found family is just as valuable and maybe even a little more trustworthy than the one you're born into.
If you know James Gunn's work beyond his MCU output,...

What sets James Gunn's superhero movies apart from the rest is his attention to character. His heroes always begin anything but; rather, they're selfish people broken by the past who find new purpose together. This, plus the right blend of humor and earnestness that most of his contemporaries can never strike, means that Gunn's movies do the "found family" trope much better than other blockbusters.
Aside from some detours in "Avengers" movies (and writing decisions that Gunn contests), the Guardians of the Galaxy have been Gunn's sole purview. That means he's crafted their character arcs as arcs, rather than just whatever characterization the shared universe demands. So where does that leave his lead, Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?"
/Film's Jenna Busch attended a press conference headlined by the "Guardians" cast. There, Pratt spoke about where Quill is at in this comic trilogy capper.

One of the most impressive things about "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2" is the way it introduces Mantis (Pom Klementieff) into the gang. Audiences are generally skeptical when a newcomer pops into a cast with an established dynamic, but "Vol. 2" eases Mantis into the group so deftly that it's not even until the Holiday Special that most viewers fully realized just how much they'd come to care for her. We didn't know we needed someone like Mantis at the end of the first film, but we're sure glad she stuck around after the second.

Maria Bakalova may be relatively new to the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, but you can't say she's not committed to her role. The actress best known for her performances in movies like "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" and "Bodies Bodies Bodies" made her Marvel debut in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" last year, playing the friendly space dog Cosmo. Though Cosmo isn't exactly the star of the Guardians team, she pretty much immediately became a fan favorite, thanks in part to Bakalova's chipper voice coming from the Russian Golden Retriever. It's no secret by now that DC's "The Flash" will pull some of its universe-resetting story from Geoff Johns and Andy Kuberts' 2011 comic run "Flashpoint," but fans of the speedy superhero still don't know exactly how much of the new movie will draw inspiration from the famed 5-issue run. /Film's Jenna Busch attended a screening of the new film with director Andy Muschietti in attendance, and the filmmaker shed some light on exactly what parts of "Flashpoint" we should expect to be incorporated in Barry Allen's (Ezra Miller) big-screen solo debut.

Now, the reactions of journalists at a highly curated industry event like CinemaCon don’t necessarily guarantee critical acclaim and box office gold to follow. Just shy of a decade ago, the DC-loving section of the internet lost its collective mind when it was revealed that Ben Affleck was going to be our new Batman, taking over the role just a year after Christian Bale wrapped up his run in "The Dark Knight Rises." Affleck's time as the superhero has been more than a bit rocky, kicking off with "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in 2016, but we don't need to go over that whole situation again. What's important is that Affleck is getting ready to hang it up for good following his appearance as Bruce Wayne in this summer's "The Flash." The old DC universe is dead and a new DC universe will rise from its ashes. But before "Superman: Legacy" kick-starts a new era of superhero movies, there are a few leftover movies to be released even if they all become dust in the wind. It's like with the last few issues of comics before the New 52 reboot — you knew it would most likely all go away, but might as well see it all go down.
One of those leftover movies, and arguably the biggest question mark for DC, is "The Flash." This is their most troubled and controversial movie outside of the Snyder Cut, a film plagued with creative changes, a parade of directors and writers that leave as soon as they enter the project, and a star with plenty of legal trouble. Now, it seems we're finally going to see this movie, even despite the Ezra Miller controversy.

The DC Extended Universe is no stranger to behind-the-scenes chaos; from David Ayer's initial cut of "Suicide Squad" getting slashed to ribbons in post-production to the sheer pandemonium that resulted in two dramatically different iterations of the same "Justice League" movie. Be it numerous writers and directors coming and going over the course of development or the controversies surrounding its lead actor Ezra Miller and their disturbing alleged behavior, whatever multiversal mayhem the "Flashpoint" comic book adaptation has to offer will be hard-pressed to match the real-life disorder that led to its existence.

Every new DC movie that comes out these days simply can't escape the elephant in the room: How will this fit in (if at all) with James Gunn and Peter Safran's new vision for the franchise? Although it's impossible to say for sure, that uncertainty sure seems to have played a role in the less-than-ideal box office performances of both Dwayne Johnson's "Black Adam" and, most recently, the Zachary Levi-starring "Shazam! Fury of the Gods." Turning "The Flash" into a greatest hits collection featuring Michael Keaton's Batman, Ben Affleck's version of the Caped Crusader, and even a continuity-bending appearance by Michael Shannon's deceased General Zod should help mitigate any sense of apathy from general audiences ... but will that malaise extend to "The Flash" as well, which has been in development in one form or another for decades at this point?

Come what may when the movie actually, finally does hit theaters this summer, "The Flash" is, indeed, getting a release from Warner Bros. This film has been through it for years and years, with Ezra Miller's solo turn as Barry Allen originally pegged to be the first DC Universe entry to hit theaters after "Justice League." That didn't happen and, even after the movie managed to finish filming, troubles emerged, largely surrounding Miller's abundant off-screen antics. But for all of the issues away from the set, the filmmakers apparently had a great time working with the actor.
/Film's own Jenna Busch recently attended a screening of "The Flash," with director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti in attendance. They addressed working with Miller during production and painted a kind picture, describing them as brilliant and funny. Here's what Andy Muschietti had to say about it:

For those who've been following along on the numerous twists and turns of Warner Bros.' "The Flash" movie, there's a pretty high chance you've suffered more whiplash over the years than the Scarlet Speedster himself. After so many director changes, delays, a number of controversies stemming from star Ezra Miller's troubling behavior, and no shortage of behind-the-scenes shake ups for the studio itself, many fans could be forgiven for assuming that the "solo" film simply wasn't meant to be. But believe it or not, it's finally becoming a reality — or as close to reality as it has ever been before.
That's because, against all odds, this timeline-hopping event movie has actually screened on the big screen, exclusively for those lucky enough to be in attendance at this year's CinemaCon festivities in Las Vegas. In an interesting wrinkle, however, Warner Bros. has made it clear that this particular cut is "not the final film,...

The hierarchy of the DC universe is changing, and no franchise or hero is safe, especially those with disappointing box office performances — I'm looking at you, "Shazam 2!" Before James Gunn's brand new DC universe officially starts, we still have a few leftover projects to figure out. One of them is "Blue Beetle," the first Latino solo superhero movie in live-action.
The story follows Jaime Reyes, a kid from El Paso who finds an alien scarab that gives him powers, but may also draw a lot of unwanted alien attention — and we are not talking about Superman.
This is one of the coolest things DC has in the works, one with cultural specificity and a young hero with teenage problems in addition to superhero stuff — which is even more promising now that Spider-Man is leaving that in favor of living alone in a crappy apartment with no family. Plus,...

DC is hoping to turn a lot of moviegoers into fans with a slightly lesser-known character this summer when "Blue Beetle" hits theaters. But it's not like nobody knows who this superhero is, as he has had a presence in the comics, animated shows, and -- more to the point -- the games for quite some time. To that end, the director of the upcoming film, Angel Manuel Soto, took direct inspiration for the hero's costume from the "Injustice" video games.
/Film's Jenna Busch was recently on hand for a "Blue Beetle" trailer premiere event. During the proceedings, Soto was asked about the character's costume in the film, which certainly looks a bit like the costume players are familiar with from the series of very popular fighting games. Soto did not deny that he took inspiration from the games and, moreover, revealed that Blue Beetle was his favorite character to play as:

With the "Blue Beetle" trailer officially out in the world, we have a pretty decent look at DC's latest attempt to bring a new, somewhat lesser-known superhero to the big screen. The question right now is: will this be a one-and-done? Or is this going to be the start of a new franchise that will be part of the new DC Universe? At the very least, star Xolo Maridueña hopes to be a part of that future.
The "Cobra Kai" actor is on board in the lead role in the film, which was developed under the old guard at DC before James Gun and Peter Safran took over as the co-heads of DC Studios. They have a big plan in place for the future, and it largely seems like it's going to be a reboot, ditching nearly everything from the so-called Snyderverse.

The first trailer for "Blue Beetle" is here, and while the latest superhero movie from DC and Warner Bros. is set to serve as an origin story for a young hero -- Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle -- whose name isn't exactly as well-known as Batman or Superman, the movie already looks like it's got some fighting words for DC's big guys. Or at least, Jaime's uncle Rudy -- played by George Lopez -- does.
/Film's Jenna Busch attended a trailer launch event for "Blue Beetle," with director Angel Manuel Soto and star Xolo Maridueña in attendance. There, "Cobra Kai" star Maridueña spoke about the ways in which "Blue Beetle" may or may not intersect with the larger DC universe, particularly when it comes to Rudy's declaration that "Batman is a fascist."

DC is going through its own Crisis event, rebooting the entire franchise and introducing plenty of changes. Many of these are rather exciting, like a focus on calling attention to the comics that influence the scripts or introducing horror to the DC movies.
But one of the most exciting additions was actually announced way before Peter Safran and James Gunn came on board. I'm talking about "Blue Beetle." The first live-action solo Latinx superhero story is set to introduce Jaime Reyes, a kid from El Paso, Texas who gains superpowers from a mystical scarab that comes from outer space. In the comics, Blue Beetle has been a member of both the Teen Titans and the Justice League.
The live-action movie stars "Cobra Kai" actor Xolo Maridueña and is directed by Angel Manuel Soto ("Charm City Kings"). Maridueña is no stranger to established franchises and doing cool stunts, having played Miguel Diaz...

Blue Beetle is a DC Comics character you might know if you've watched The CW TV shows or read the comics. For the average viewer, however, he might be as unfamiliar to you as the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man originally were for casual Marvel fans.
Today, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for "Blue Beetle," who has his own film on the way. Another superhero flick, you say? I get it. I really do. I'm a huge fan of the genre, but to be honest with you, I've been feeling the same way. There is so much superhero lore to keep track of and earlier films and shows to catch up on, and many fans are understandably tired of it all. It's starting to feel like homework.
However, this week, I got a chance to attend a trailer event for "Blue Beetle," and I left feeling pretty great about this one.

As varied and wide-ranging as superheroes and comic book movies can be, even rivals like Marvel and DC sometimes have difficulty separating one from the other from the perspective of general audiences. Darkseid may predate Thanos as the biggest supervillain of their respective universes in the comics, but guess which of those two characters would likely be considered a "ripoff" among certain viewers if he were to ever appear in a future movie beyond "Zack Snyder's Justice League"? Among the many, many, many setbacks that have afflicted DC's long in-the-works "The Flash" movie, you can bet that the Marvel Cinematic Universe beating their competitors to the punch by introducing Quicksilver as their major speedster in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" absolutely had an effect on DC's decision-makers.
Now, it certainly looks like history might have come close to repeating itself with "Shazam! Fury of the Gods." And we may have Benedict Cumberbatch...

David F. Sandberg wasn't actually all that familiar with "Shazam!" when he first signed on to direct the 2019 DC comic book movie. But he spent a long time getting to know the character, becoming intimately familiar with his origins as Captain Marvel, his reappearance as Shazam! in the '70s, and reintroduction as part of DC's "New 52" reboot in 2011. That allowed him to pepper 2019's "Shazam!" with numerous references to the character's history and DC history as a whole, which is a practice he's set to continue with the upcoming "Shazam! Fury of the Gods."
The film will see Zachary Levi return as the eponymous hero, with Asher Angel once again playing the young Billy Batson, who utters the magic phrase in order to transform into his super-powered alter ego. This time, he's flanked by his powered-up foster siblings, who will help him face off against Helen Mirren's vengeful Hespera.

In April 2019, DC and Warner Bros. gave us the quippy and jokey "Shazam!" Directed by David F. Sandberg and produced by Peter Safran — who together with James Gunn now helms the newly-christened DC Studios — the film was somewhat of an outlier among the darker films of the Snyderverse. Zack Snyder had established the main continuity of the (now defunct) DC Extended Universe with blockbuster entries such as "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice."
But "Shazam!" was a more lighthearted, less ambitious project, focused on a hero with much less cultural caché than DC's biggest characters. And it proved to be a hit. With a global box office take of $363 million and widespread positive reviews, "Shazam!" proved DC and Warner Bros. could do family-friendly films and be successful.
But just a month before it, Marvel Studios had churned out its latest in the form of the Brie Larson-starring "Captain Marvel.

To say that the folks at DC Studios have had a rough go of it lately is an understatement. The lack of a collective vision, coupled with strokes of ego, left a bunch of question marks up in the air regarding the direction of the company's future. But with co-chair and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, they made it clear that they were going to get this ship back on track. After much speculation, the new era of DC is shaping up to look pretty solid.
The first batch of movies in DC's "Chapter 1" slate will include "Superman: Legacy," "The Authority," "The Brave and the Bold," "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," and "Swamp Thing," while the television side of things will consist of "Creature Commandos," "Waller," "Booster Gold," "Lanterns," and "Paradise Lost." James Gunn and Peter Safran ended the first month of 2023 with a huge bang by announcing some of the massive projects that will be a part of the all-new DC Universe. As part of their story's first chapter, which has been christened "Gods and Monsters," the DC Studios co-chairs and co-CEOs revealed a number of unexpected movies starring Swamp Thing, Damian Wayne, Supergirl, The Authority, and more. They also outlined some surprising TV shows featuring Amanda Waller, Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern Corps, and Weasel from "The Suicide Squad."
But out of everything the duo revealed to select members of the press (including /Film's Jenna Busch) on Monday afternoon, one title, in particular, stood out from the rest. After being teased by a larger presence in film and television for over a decade, Booster Gold is finally getting his own series as part of the Dcu.

The Snyderverse is dead. The Arrowverse is concluding. James Gunn and Peter Safran have seized the reins of the DC Universe, and on Monday they revealed their plan to bring order to a film-and-television brand that was haphazardly developed and, particularly on the film side, ineptly run. It is ambitious. It is still fairly sketchy on details. But the titles and characters they've elected to feature in the early going are, to this 49-year-old comic book fan's mind, indicative of grand, mythic thinking -- the creation of a new era of Gods and Monsters.
Given Gunn's bullishness on the epic, big-hearted quality of "The Flash" -- which he inherited from the previous regime and, it appears, could be used to spinoff/set-up his phase of TV and movie projects -- the outgoing steward of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise seems eager to enforce a benevolent worldview via his newly attained perch.

James Gunn Can't Tease His Favorite Upcoming DC Universe Project – Even The 'Idea' Will Give It Away
James Gunn has a reputation in the former DC Extended Universe, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though he got his start with the indie horror comedy giant Troma Entertainment, he's since become one of the leading creatives in the comic book movie and TV world. He and Peter Safran are now the co-chair and co-CEOs of DC Studios, and opened up about their plans for what's been officially named the DC Universe at a press event attended by /Film's Jenna Busch, starting with their initial slate of DC films and TV shows (aka "Gods and Monsters"). For now, however, there's one particular project that Gunn is refusing to talk about in any significant detail.

The time has finally come, DC fans. As promised, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the recently appointed co-heads of DC Studios, have laid out their initial plans for the brand-new DC Universe. And yes, to be perfectly clear, it is very much going to be new — not just in terms of characters that we're going to see on screen, but in terms of the overall approach. To that end, video games are going to be a big part of the equation. While no specific video game titles were announced at this time, we did learn how the team will approach games. In short: it's all connected.

Have you heard the news? Big changes are afoot over at Warner Bros. and their shiny new DC Universe. Led by DC Studios co-chairs and co-ceos James Gunn and Peter Safran, the creative duo officially unveiled their new plans for the most famous superheroes in the world ... and many lesser-known ones, as well. But it's not fully an "Out with the old, in with the new" kind of deal, however. As much as this shakeup might resemble a reboot of sorts, the reality is slightly more complicated as the new regime has to deal with the leftovers they've inherited from an admittedly messy era of live-action DC.

The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is actually changing, just not the way Dwayne Johnson imagined.

Every film is made by a team of individuals with mighty aspirations who push themselves to unfathomable heights to do what they do best and make it look easy for the viewing audience. But as anyone behind the scenes of any production will tell you, it's never quite that simple. Is there any image in J.R.R. Tolkien's land of Middle-earth that's more famous than a big old pair of hobbit feet? Well, sure, there's the one ring itself, but that powerful relic isn't nearly as endearing as the fuzzy-footed group of heroes who end up saving the world from its dark magic.
When Tolkien dreamed up "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Hobbit," and their accompanying texts, he described a people whose most noticeable feature -- other than their diminutive size -- was their hairy feet. Little did he know, those initial descriptions would lead to some creative movie magic decades down the line.
Despite a twenty-year gap between productions, the prosthetic feet for Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and the new Prime Video series "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" were actually designed by the same person, the show's head of prosthetics Jamie Wilson.

As what is likely the most expensive TV show in the history of the medium, it makes sense that "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" would have a vast and varied crew. If you live long enough, you start to see the same eyes in different people.
