The Doctor is out. Jodie Whittaker and “Doctor Who” showrunner Chris Chibnall will exit the series in the fall of 2022, BBC confirmed on Thursday.
Whittaker and Chibnall’s farewell will come in a trio of specials that will air as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations, and on BBC America in the U.S. The BBC had already previously announced a six-part Season 13 coming in the fall and two specials planned for 2022, but BBC One has now ordered an additional third feature-length adventure to conclude Whittaker and Chibnall’s “Doctor Who” run next year.
Whittaker is the Thirteenth Doctor and the first woman to hold the role, having entered “Doctor Who” when Chibnall took over the show in 2017.
Chibnall was also responsible for bringing in “Doctor Who” cast members Tosin Cole (Ryan), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham), plus Sacha Dhawan as the latest incarnation of The Master...

The BBC has finally confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in television: Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall are quitting Doctor Who.
The duo have been in charge of the Tardis since 2017 and will be leaving BBC Studios’ iconic sci-fi franchise next year. Before they exit, they will bring fans Season 13 this fall and three feature-length specials in 2022, the last of which will mark the end of the Thirteenth Doctor.
Whittaker will be remembered as the first woman to play the Time Lord, bringing warmth and comedy to the role. Her departure has long been speculated and is in line with her predecessors, including David Tennant and Matt Smith, who also completed three seasons before moving on to other projects.

“Doctor Who’s” Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) is set to return to the Whoniverse in a holiday special on BBC America.
In the upcoming special, titled “Revolution of the Daleks,” Captain Jack will be on hand to help the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and her companions as they uncover an unsettling plan by one of the Doctor’s formidable enemies, the Daleks. With the Doctor locked away in a space prison, it’s up to Captain Jack to help save planet Earth.
“Putting on Jack’s coat and setting foot back on the set of ‘Doctor Who’ was just like going back home,” Barrowman said. “It’s always thrilling to play Captain Jack. He’s a character very close to my heart who changed my life, and to know the fans love him as much as I do makes his return even sweeter. I hope everyone enjoys Jack’s heroic adventure with Thirteen.

Doctor Who season 12 saw the shocking return of John Barrowman as Captain Jack in its fifth episode, but it stopped short of pairing the fan favorite Time Agent up with Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. This left the door open for a further appearance from the character, then, and sure enough, we now know that Jack is coming back again in this year’s holiday special, “Revolution of the Daleks.”
Earlier today, the BBC revealed Barrowman’s return with our first clip from the episode. The 15-second video opens on a black screen, with the wheezing, groaning noise of the Tardis heard. The picture then appears, showing an excited Jack. “Ohh I’ve missed that sound,” he admits. And it’s safe to say fans have missed him, too.

The good news is that work has begun on Doctor Who season 13, despite fears that the BBC flagship show was going to suffer a lengthy delay due to the pandemic. The bad news is that the Covid-19 outbreak has affected the series’ production in some form.
Showrunner Chris Chibnall has confirmed this week that season 13 will have a reduced episode count. In total, it’ll be three installments shorter than usual. The EP told The Mirror that he was “thrilled” to be able to make a new season of Doctor Who at all, though, due to the difficulties in the TV industry that the pandemic has brought about.
Production has now begun on the 10-month shoot, but because of safety protocols that have to be in place, it’ll take much longer to put together each episode, hence the reduction in quantity. As Chibnall said in a statement:

Current Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall has received his fair share of backlash ever since taking over from Steven Moffat in 2017. But now, after the cliffhanger finale of season 12, a lot of people are asking the BBC to bring back the previous executive producer for Jodie Whittaker’s future runs.
As is the case with every beloved franchise, an era of transition is never easy for fans. Even Moffat had to deal with the same kind of backlash when Russell T. Davies and David Tennant left the show after four seasons. But to say that the Whovian fandom is now more divided than ever would simply be an understatement.
Chibnall has made a number of controversial decisions for the narrative of the rebooted series, most of which essentially undermined years of continuity. Whether it’s the Timeless Child that revealed the Doctor is not from this universe and there’ve...

As with 2018’s season 11 and, uh, pretty much every run of the show ever, Doctor Who season 12 garnered a lot of criticism from some quarters of fandom over various storytelling choices that were made. Even casting aside the crazy #NotMyDoctor lot, various plot developments, bits of characterization and whatnot weren’t universally adored by Whovians.
While speaking to Smh.com, exec producer Matt Strevens – who’s been in charge of the series along with showrunner Chris Chibnall since Jodie Whittaker took over as the Doctor – defended the run from this kind of criticism. He explained that he thinks the production team can only follow their vision without bending to fan whims.
“I think it sort of cleaves to the basic principle we have and I’ve had on the show, but I think we all have, is you have a vision for what you want to do while you’re on the show,...

It’s been a bumpy ride for the second season of Chris Chibnall’s Doctor Who this past couple of weeks, but since the showrunner is returning for another season next year, fans are wondering if the latest incarnation of the Master will make a comeback as well.
The arch-nemesis of the Doctor suddenly reappearing during season 12’s premiere episode was one of the more shocking moments of the new run. After Moffat introduced a redemption arc for Missy in season 10, Chibnall once again managed to remind us of why the conflict between the two Time Lords has gone down in history as the Enmity of Ages.
Of course, we don’t exactly know where this new Master fits into the narrative and continuity of Who, but most fans are assuming that Dwahan’s character is the regeneration between Simm’s Master and Gomez’s Missy. And during last week’s penultimate episode,...

It's almost time to return to the world of Doctor Who.
BBC America dropped the official trailer for the upcoming twelfth season of the sci-fi trailer over the weekend.

However, things take a dangerous turn when the doctor is transported back to 1943 Paris and immediately gets the sense that something is after her.
“Something’s coming for me," she warns. "I can feel it.”

Goran Višnjić (ER) and Robert Glenister (Paranoid) will join the previously announced Stephen Fry (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and Lenny Henry (Broadchuch) as guest stars joining the cast of Doctor Who when the venerable sci-fi import returns to BBC America in early 2020.
For Glenister, joining the new season’s ensemble feels a bit like time travel: “I first appeared in Doctor Who in ‘The Caves of Androzani’ at the tender age of 24 in 1984. Thirty-five years later, I got to be in it again at the not-so-tender age of nearly 60. How time flies!”
Višnjić, meanwhile, is a longtime viewer, first-time visitor to the Tardis: “I’ve always been a huge fan of Doctor Who, so when the offer to play one of my favorite people in history came, it made me so happy to be part of the show and it turned into this awesome, dream job!”

Doctor Who pleased its fans on New Year’s Day by bringing back the Daleks for the show’s latest winter special, “Resolution.” Well, to be precise, it was just one Dalek.
The plot saw the squid-like creature running around Sheffield trying to build itself a makeshift casing. When it finally managed to, the iconic monster was given a top-to-bottom redesign, with the villain’s distinctive shape being altered and the sleek bronze look being replaced with rusted scrap metal.
If you’re interested to find out more about the creation of this new Dalek, then the BBC has got just the thing for you. The Doctor Who YouTube channel has shared a new featurette (seen below) to tie into “Resolution,” which has the cast and crew discussing the return of one of the scary critters from Skaro.

Before Doctor Who season 11 began, producers Chris Chibnall and Matt Strevens promised fans that the first season starring Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor would be totally standalone and would not feature an overarching story of any kind, as has been the norm since the show came back in 2005. Eight episodes in, and it mostly looks like the pair were telling the truth. However, some have noticed a recurring motif throughout the run that might be going somewhere.
Have you realized yet how several episodes so far have featured a recurring set design: the shape of the Tardis console? Just a couple of examples include the sleek, white spaceship featured in “The Tsuranga Conundrum” and the workstation from the janitor’s room in “Kerblam!”
Don’t believe us? See the stills of the sets in question in the gallery below, along with a shot of the actual Tardis for comparison.

We’re four weeks into the eleventh season of Doctor Who and we’ve already got to know the Thirteenth Doctor and her trio of friends Ryan, Yaz and Graham pretty well. However, it still feels like we’ve yet to really dive into who Yaz is as a person. The latest episode, “Arachnids in the U.K.”, introduced her family but it seems like we still don’t know what’s really going on in her head. However, it’s possible that the last episode contained a hint at a big personal revelation for the character that’s coming later down the line this season.
When Yaz’s mother Najia Khan interrogates her daughter over her relationship with the Doctor, she asks whether they’re seeing each other. The Doctor’s confused about the meaning of the question but Yaz scoffs at the idea and changes the subject. Then,...

The most important goal for new “Doctor Who” showrunner Chris Chibnall and his fellow executive producer Matt Strevens was “don’t break it because it’s awesome.” They discussed the new season of the long-running British sci-fi series with press at New York Comic Con 2018 shortly before the premiere episode was simulcast around the world on October 7. Listen to them in our podcast above, and scroll down to watch their panel discussion that immediately followed the premiere episode.
“What I wanted to do coming in was create a series that reflected my love and passion for the show from being a three-year-old to now,” Chibnall added. And with the introduction of Jodie Whittaker as the first ever female Doctor, he also wanted it to be “something that feels incredibly inclusive … We wanted to do a show that demonstrated the whole breadth and range of what ‘Doctor Who’ can do, that...

It’s safe to say that Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Thirteenth Doctor has been a rip-roaring success. Critics and audiences loved the premiere episode, which earned record viewing figures for Doctor Who, and I personally thought it felt like a proper step forward for the show in terms of production values. But with her first adventure out of the way and a group of new companions in tow, what dangers face them in the upcoming outings?
Well, we already know that classic enemies like Daleks and Cyberman won’t be turning up in this season, and during a panel at Nycc last weekend, showrunner Chris Chibnall and producer Matt Strevens spoke about who we can expect in their place, saying:

The new production team working on Doctor Who season 11 had their work cut out relaunching the show basically from scratch, with an all-new Doctor in Jodie Whittaker and a completely fresh supporting cast. For inspiration, though, it seems they turned to another successful reboot of a beloved sci-fi franchise: Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While speaking to the press at this weekend’s New York Comic Con, showrunner Chris Chibnall and exec producer Matt Strevens discussed casting the new companions – played by Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh. The former explained that “With any casting, there’s a bit of magic and alchemy as you go.” Stevens then made the point that he hopes the young cast will warm themselves to viewers as much as the likes of Daisy Ridley and John Boyega did in Disney’s Star Wars sequel.
“It’s similar to what we loved about something like The Force Awakens.

“Doctor Who” is introducing its first-ever female Doctor and brand-new companions on Sunday, but one familiar face could make a comeback. Actress Michelle Gomez hinted that her character Missy could return, even though she was last seen dying after being shot in the back.
“Absolutely, in this business, never say never,” Gomez said during an interview with IndieWire for her new Netflix series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” “Missy could come back, and there could be a little something head-to-head there. We’ll see.”
In the “Doctor Who” universe, the Master is a renegade Time Lord who became a chief antagonist of the Doctor. A Time Lord can regenerate into any person or gender, and the Master became the first to regenerate in a female form: Missy. In last season’s finale, the Master and Missy both existed at the same time due to “timey-wimey” reasons, and in the end, the...

Though Doctor Who is episodic by nature, as the Doctor travels to a new time and place week in week out, the modern series has unfailingly had some sort of story arc that tied the Time Lord’s adventures together and built up to a grand finale at the end of the season. But fans shouldn’t expect to see that in this next run.
Producer Matt Strevens spoke to Digital Spy and revealed that the only major through-line in the upcoming batch of episodes is the burgeoning friendship between Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor and her band of companions, Yaz (Mandip Gill), Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Graham (Bradley Walsh).
“I’d say the only series arc is the growing relationship between the Doctor and her new friends, and how that team builds across the series.”

The idea had been thrown around for a while, but it wasn’t until last year that Doctor Who finally got its first female Time Lord in the form of Jodie Whittaker, the Thirteenth Doctor. Of course, there was a fair amount of backlash from a small – but loud – subset of fans, but for the most part, folks agreed that it was the right move for the show to make waves and try something new.
It’s something that was apparently never up for debate, either, as once Peter Capaldi had decided he was done with the role, the team behind the sci-fi series knew the next person to take the part had to be female.
“Once Peter had decided he was leaving, the next Doctor was always going to be a female Doctor,” said producer Matt Strevens.

The decision to cast Jodie Whittaker as the very first female Doctor in the history of “Doctor Who” was one that broke a fan base last year. But new showrunner Chris Chibnall wouldn’t have signed on for the upcoming eleventh season had the show not agreed it was high time a female time lord was in charge.
“That’s what Chris wanted, that was part of his conditions of doing the job,” executive producer Matt Strevens told Digital Spy in an interview published Tuesday.
Chibnall said the decision to make the 13th Doctor a woman felt “straightforward” and “not that controversial.” “It’s very hard to think of many examples in its 55-year history where the Doctor takes a decision based upon gender,” he added.

It’s a whole new era for “Doctor Who,” and the show’s panel at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday reflected the changing of the guard, beginning with new showrunner Chris Chibnall (“Broadchurch”) and executive producer Matt Strevens. Naturally, the crowd in Hall H was on hand to see the new Time Lord herself, Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor, and her new companions Mandip Gill, who plays Yasmin, and Tosin Cole as Ryan. Bradley Walsh, who plays the third companion, Graham, was not present, but he did pre-tape a video that showed off his delightfully goofy personality.
To mark the occasion of the very first female Doctor, some fans — lacking their own personal Tardis — resorted to camping out for the line for the Hall H panel as early as Monday. Several were also already dressed in a rainbow-striped shirt, suspenders, highwater pants, and hooded coat: the new costume for the 13th Doctor.

The first female Doctor made her first appearance at Comic-Con.
Jodie Whittaker, who was announced last year as the new title character in BBC’s “Doctor Who” and appeared briefly in the finale of the most recent season, was joined by producers and fellow cast members in a Hall H panel on Thursday. Whittaker is the first woman to play the role, which has been portrayed by 12 previous actors.
“The thing about this role, which is why it is so amazing for any actor to play the role, is that essentially gender is irrelevant, and that’s completely liberating,” Whittaker said. “As a woman who is into a genre, and as just a woman, I’ve never approached a role as ‘Well, how would a woman do this?’ I’ve just done it from my perspective. The wonderful thing about playing the Doctor is that I’m playing an alien.

The secrecy surrounding Doctor Who‘s upcoming eleventh season is so tight that we haven’t even had a clear picture of the structure of the run yet. It’d previously been revealed that season 11 would consist of 9 episodes of 50 minutes each and a season opener at the special length of 65 minutes. However, whether the episodes would be made up of several sets of two-parters or even one long serialized storyline was not known.
Thanks to a press conference at San Diego Comic-Con, though, we can finally tell you the format of season 11. Showrunner Chris Chibnall revealed to Digital Spy that each of the 10 episodes will be standalone, meaning there won’t be any of the traditional two-parter storylines. He explained that this approach was taken in order to make sure there was a “range and variety” to the storytelling.
“It’s 10 standalone episodes, there’s no two-parters or anything like that.

“It’s a perfect job for any actor because even though there’s the 12 previous shoes that you’re filling, you’re able creatively to make it your own,” says Jodie Whittaker, as the 13th Doctor Who and first woman to play the Time Lord prepares to hit the stage in her Comic-Con debut this morning. “So, I think rather than feeling the pressure of that, I feel the excitement of that,” she adds of her role and the new era for the BBC America series.

This week, more than 130,000 convention-goers (many in costumes) will swarm the bay city for all the latest on “Walking Dead,” “Halloween,” “Doctor Who,” and anything and everything comic book related. But with a glut of content, how does one decipher the cream of the comic-con crop? Below is our list of can’t-miss panels at this year’s convention.

Shane Black will tease his irreverent take on the three-decade-old alien franchise. The director has brought a trash-talking sensibility to everything from “Lethal Weapon” to “Iron Man 3.” Expect more of the same as the film focuses on a group of ex-soldiers battling Ptsd and an extraterrestrial hunter. Plus, Black can usually be counted on to say something controversial so the panel is guaranteed to be interesting.

When Jodie Whittaker was first announced to be playing the Thirteenth Doctor last July, the world was left gobsmacked by the groundbreaking casting. But how exactly did the actress land the coveted lead role in Doctor Who?
Well, as part of their coverage of the upcoming season 11, EW spoke to Whittaker about her upcoming run on the show and explained that she was initially surprised to get the offer to audition. The star recalled that she was speaking with new showrunner Chris Chibnall, who she previously worked with on crime drama Broadchurch, about his Doctor Who gig. He then turned the conversation around by inquiring if she’d like to be up for the part of the next incarnation of the Time Lord. It didn’t take long for Whittaker to respond, either, as she told the outlet the following:

He then turned the conversation around by inquiring if she’d like to be up for the part of the next incarnation of the Time Lord. It didn’t take long for Whittaker to respond, either, as she told the outlet the following:
“It was hilarious because, I was going, ‘Are you looking...

Thanks to the special Comic-Con edition of Entertainment Weekly, we’ve finally got some fresh news about the long-awaited eleventh season of Doctor Who. Following her brief first scene at the end of 2017 Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time,” the new run will see Jodie Whittaker make her full debut as the Thirteenth Doctor. What’s more, Chris Chibnall is stepping in as showrunner so the sci-fi series will truly be undergoing a complete regeneration.
Fans are eager to find out what season 11 will be like, then, as the new lead and writing team is sure to give it a rejuvenated tone and spirit. While speaking with EW, Whittaker herself was on hand to tease that the watchwords of this new era of Doctor Who will be “wonder” and “hope.” She also joked that she has to speak “a hundred miles an hour” when in character as the Time Lord Lady.

Doctor Who season 11 will see the full debut of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, after her brief appearance at the end of 2017 Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time.” Despite knowing of her casting for a whole year now, though, we still have very little idea about what sort of Doctor Whittaker will be. Thankfully, one of her co-stars on the new run has helpfully compared her to a past incarnation of the Time Lord.
While speaking to EW as part of their big celebration of the sci-fi series in their special Comic-Con tie-in issue, Doctor Who newcomer Mandip Gill – who’ll play Thirteen’s companion Yasmin – explained that Whittaker has a “very high energy” in her performance as the Doctor, which is similar to Matt Smith’s Time Lord.
“She has a similar energy to Matt Smith’s Doctor. Very high energy. Jodie has that about her Doctor.”

Doctor Who fans are counting down the weeks until we get to see Jodie Whittaker make her proper debut as the Thirteenth Doctor when the series returns for its eleventh season. As exciting as that is, there has been one reason to be mournful, as evidence up to this point had suggested there won’t be a Christmas special this year.
Ever since the sci-fi show returned to screens in 2005, it’s had a Christmas special every year, even during periods when the full seasons were on hiatus. What made us think the tradition had ended, though, was that the press release for season 11 made reference to nine, 50-minute episodes and a 65 minute season opener, but didn’t mention an additional hour-long festive special, as you’d expect.
And yet, a new piece of evidence has now come our way which suggests that there will be a Doctor Who Christmas episode this year after all.

Still finishing up its final season, Game of Thrones won’t be unleashing its Hall H power this year but television will still be storming Comic-Con this year. With what may be Andrew Lincoln’s last appearance, The Walking Dead will be there, as Amazon’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, the Sdcc debut of new Doctor Who Jodie Whittaker in Hall H plus a sneak peek at Syfy’s highly anticipated adaptation of Deadly Class by Avengers Infinity War directors the Russo Bros.
Add to that, Warner Bros. TV is coming out in full force with 15 shows — but that’s not to say that they are having all the fun. From network reboots (Charmed) to veteran shows (Supernatural) to reunions (Breaking Bad) to newbies (Cloak & Dagger), Comic-Con is busting at the seams with shows for the masses of discerning fanboys and fangirls setting up shop in San Diego...

The Doctor is heading to court after the BBC has asked the California Federal Court to reveal who leaked footage of the forthcoming season of Doctor Who to a U.S. social media site.
BBC Studios, the company’s production and commercial arm, has filed an application in the U.S. court, to compel California-based website Tapatalk to disclose who leaked a 53-second clip of the new season.
The leak is particularly significant as it is the first season starring the show’s first female Doctor, played by Broadchurch actor Jodie Whittaker. The short clip, as well as two still images, were shared on the site last week. However, the British public broadcaster is not accusing Tapatalk of any wrongdoing, noting that users who upload copyrighted materials violate the site’s terms and conditions.
