Kinglsey Ben-Adir as “Bob Marley” in Bob Marley: One Love from Paramount Pictures. Photo Credit: Chiabella James Most people are familiar with the name Bob Marley and some of the man’s music, but in the time since the reggae icon’s death, some of the other aspects of his life have been largely forgotten. The new biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, focuses a lot of its energy on those lesser-known stories about the star. And, as the film’s star, Kingsley Ben-Adir, said a lot of those stories are quite personal. In preparing for the role, he revealed, he spoke extensively with the Marley family, who taught him more than he’d ever expected to know about the man he’d be playing. The latest narrative film about a musician – Bob Marley: One Love – ultimately plays out more as a celebration of Bob Marley than as a “warts-and-all” biography; and that is to the film’s benefit.
Whereas the film could have become burdened by monotonously moving through Marley’s life from one pivotal moment to the next, it instead bounces around the singer’s story in a whimsical, often spiritual way that enables his saga to take on a more grandiose aura than might have been expected otherwise.
Bob Marley: One Love begins with Marley and his band prepping for a free concert in Jamaica. However, when threats of violence against the singer should he perform put his health and well-being at risk, the actual performance is cut short, and the rest of the film begins to play out. What follows is an inspiring story of the singer’s triumph over numerous...

Kingsley Ben-Adir as “Bob Marley” in Bob Marley: One Love from Paramount Pictures.Photo Credit Chiabella James Though he only lived to be 36, Bob Marley’s influence has lived on for more than half a century. Marley’s professional music career, which began when he was just a teen, has accounted for sales of more than 75 million albums worldwide and earned him a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He was also an outspoken political figure, which once made him the target of an assassination attempt. So it comes as no surprise that a biopic about Marley — Bob Marley: One Love — is being released. Kingsley Ben-Adir, who plays Marley in the film, told us that, when it came to how he would portray Marley, he wanted to focus more on the personal aspects of his life than the professional, and he based his research into Marley’s life along those lines.

A critical character in Dune, both the novel and all three screen adaptations of it, is Duke Leto Atreides, head of the powerful Atreides family and father of the story’s protagonist, Paul Atreides. The Atreides are one of many noble families who wield immense power in this galactic empire of the far future, and Duke Leto is given control by the Emperor of perhaps the most important planet in the galaxy — Arrakis, also known as Dune.
Arrakis is the only planet that produces a substance called melange, or the spice, which enhances human abilities and makes space travel possible. But Leto is walking into a trap set by the Emperor and former Arrakis overlords the Harkonnens, who plan to wrest control of Arrakis away from Leto and his family by any means necessary — including murder.

Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve knows a thing or two about stepping into deep waters with even deeper legacies. A versatile filmmaker who as of late has been working in science fiction, his last movie Blade Runner 2049 was the decades-later sequel to a 1980s cult classic lionized for its genre-defining imagery. For most filmmakers such a prospect would be intimidating, but for Villeneuve it might only be pretext since his next film is a new big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Dune has technically been brought to the screen before, but in such an unfortunate and incomprehensible way by director David Lynch that no one really counts it. The influential novel similarly felled iconoclast filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky in the 1970s when he attempted to bring it to the screen in a production so legendary that it inspired an excellent documentary about what almost was. It’s perhaps for that...

On the heels of yesterday’s first look at Timothée Chalamet, “Dune” has unveiled a handful of new photos featuring the debuts of Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Rebecca Ferguson in character in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert’s legendary science-fiction novel (via Vanity Fair). Villeneuve, coming off his acclaimed “Blade Runner 2049,” has said from the start he intended to split Herbert’s book in half and make a two-part “Dune” film. The director revealed to Vanity Fair his pitch was not unlike what Warner Bros. did with its recent adaptation of Stephen King’s “It.”
“I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie,” Villeneuve said to Vanity Fair. “The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.”
