Dani Weinstein, the veteran PR and marketing executive who specializes in awards campaigns, has been named the chief communications officer and global publicity head of 101 Studios, the production company behind Yellowstone and all of Taylor Sheridan’s other shows, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Weinstein’s hire reunites her with 101 Studios founder and CEO David Glasser, with whom she worked closely from 2008 through 2017 when they were both top executives at The Weinstein Co. (She is not related to the former company’s namesakes.)
Weinstein, who always has been and will continue to be based in New York, most recently served as Focus Features’ executive vp publicity from August 2017 through November 2021, overseeing the specialty operation’s theatrical publicity (it enjoyed its biggest domestic opening ever under her watch when Downton Abbey debuted to 31 million) and Oscar-winning campaigns for Darkest Hour, BlacKkKlansman, Promising Young Woman and Belfast.

The Toronto International Film Festival is the starting gate for fall acquisitions, but for buyers the greatest challenge isn’t their competitors; it’s a target audience that can’t be roused from their couches. That means indie distributors must amend their strategies — if not rewrite them altogether.
“A movie that tests 75 doesn’t warrant a theatrical release in the current marketplace,” said one indie studio executive. “Filmmakers are going to have to be okay with going to Netflix, and only Netflix.”
To that point, Netflix bought Svod rights to Ana Lily Amirpour’s “The Bad Batch” after its Venice Film Festival premiere — but theatrical remains available as it goes into Tiff. Netflix tends to reserve its theatrical platforms for awards titles. Without streaming rights, “The Bad Batch” would have to find a buyer who’s satisfied with only theatrical and DVD revenue.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

New York — For much of the nine years that Shane Salerno worked on his J.D. Salinger documentary and book, the project was a mystery worthy of the author himself.
Code names. Hidden identities. Surveillance cameras. Until 2010, when "The Catcher In the Rye" novelist died at age 91, only a handful of people were fully aware of what he was up to. Even now, with the release date of the film "Salinger" less than three weeks away, little is known about a production that draws upon more than 100 interviews and a trove of documents and rare photographs, and that promises many revelations about an author who still fascinates millions.
"I have worked more than 200 documentaries in my career and Salinger was the most secretive and the most intense film I have ever worked on," said Buddy Squires, the film's cinematographer and co-producer who has worked on such Ken Burns documentaries as "Jazz" and "The Central Park Five.

While The Weinstein Co. didn't succeed in overturning the MPAA's ruling that they can't use the title "The Butler" for their upcoming historical drama, the film's new name isn't vastly different from the original.
"We are now 'Lee Daniels' The Butler' -- we are thrilled," said Weinstein Co. spokeswoman Dani Weinstein on Friday after the MPAA issued its latest decision in the entertainment battle, a legal tussle that kicked off earlier this month when Warner Bros. asserted its rights to "The Butler," the title of a 1916 short film in the studio's library.
Along with making the slight title tweak, which necessitates a wholesale revision of the movie's marketing materials, The Weinstein Co. will have to shell out $400,000 in fines for violating the MPAA's initial ruling, as well as an additional $100,000 to the Entertainment Industry Foundation. The organization will also have to cover up to -- but no more than -- $150,000 of Warner Bros.

The Weinstein Company has lost its appeal in a legal battle regarding the film previously known as The Butler.
The movie, directed by Lee Daniels and starring Forest Whitaker, tells the true story of Eugene Allen, who served as White House butler from 1952 to 1986.
Earlier this month, Warner Bros filed a motion for The Weinstein Company to change the movie's title, as the studio already owns the rights to a 1916 silent short film also called The Butler.
Harvey Weinstein claimed Warner Bros was using "bullying" tactics, and that the conflict really related to a dispute over the rights for The Hobbit.
In a statement released last week, he also questioned Warner Bros's suggestion that the movie title may confuse fans of the 1916 film, saying: "The suggestion that there is a danger of confusion between TWC's 2013 feature movie and a 1917 short that has not been shown in theaters, television, DVDs, or...
