Critical Role gave fans a first look at the character art for upcoming Amazon original animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina,” created by Emmy-winning artist, animator and designer Phil Bourassa.
Cr is producing “The Legend of Vox Machina,” based on the popular role-playing collective’s first campaign. In 2019 Amazon Prime Video ordered a total of 24 episodes across two seasons after the project broke Kickstarter records. The first season is slated to debut “soon” on Amazon Prime Video.
Bourassa’s credits include character designs for DC/Warner Bros. Animation’s “Young Justice,” “Batman: Bad Blood,” “Batman: Hush” and “Justice League” series.
Bourassa, in a video Critical Role released Wednesday about his joining the series (watch below), said he worked closely with the Cr team to create the anime-inflected character looks.

The next DC Universe Original Movie will be an animated adaptation of classic 2000s graphic novel Hush, originally from writer Jeph Loeb and artist Jim Lee. The story sees the Dark Knight confronting a mysterious new villain called Hush and features a number of friends and foes from the DC mythos. It’s ripe to be brought to the screen, then, and now Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released a first look at the movie.

Without a doubt, Warner Bros. Animation have been on a roll in 2017 when it comes to their direct-to-video line of DC animated films, already having impressed audiences with the R-rated supernatural adventure Justice League Dark and the long overdue Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. As for what lies ahead, well, it looks like they’re about to appeal to our nostalgic side with Batman and Harley Quinn.
I say that because this particular entry doesn’t conform to any one comic book artist’s style, nor does it to Phil Bourassa’s New 52 inspired template. Actually, it aligns perfectly with The New Batman Adventures – or “the revamp episodes,” as they’re often referred to – giving a generous nod to what Bruce Timm established two decades ago. Truth be told, it makes sense to go in this creative direction when you consider that Timm himself is one of the creative minds behind this project.

Having dominated The CW’s prime time lineup in recent years, it appears as though DC is ready to broaden its horizon with a new digital service that’ll be launched by Warner Bros. If anything, 2017 is going to have quite the steady stream of DC animated films, with the next one up being Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. Loosely adapting the classic storyline of the same name written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by George Perez, it’ll see some of the most beloved young heroes in all of comics face their biggest challenges yet, namely Brother Blood and Deathstroke.
While many of us have to wait for a home video release to enjoy the movie, those fortunate enough to attend WonderCon in Anaheim, California in a few weeks will have the opportunity to attend the world premiere. You see, on Friday, March 31 at 6:00pm, a screening will take place in the Arena of the Anaheim Convention Center, complete with panel afterwards. Should you miss out on that, an encore will be shown on Sunday, April 2 (also in the Arena), but with no panel to follow.

This week, I was totally stumped on a topic for this column. I turned to my fellow columnist, Joe Corallo, for help and he immediately mentioned the exact thing I’ve been chatting about for the past week. Not really sure why I blanked on it because it is such a big topic right now. So let’s talk about Young Justice.
Young Justice, in case you don’t know, follows a group of young DC heroes as they learn to work as a team and find their place amongst the Justice League. As the series grows through seasons 1 and 2, we watch the young heroes change into the heroes we always wanted them to be. Sadly, it ended on a cliffhanger. It is not based on the comic of the same name but does build off the DC universe.

Concept artist Phil Bourassa has revealed via his Instagram account that an animated adaptation of Alan Moore and Brian Bollan's iconic graphic novel "Batman: The Killing Joke" was being developed back in 2009 by Warner Brothers.
Legendary animation artist and "Batman: The Animated Series" producer Bruce Timm was developing the project and supervising Bourassa's work on the project. Whiether Timm, who directed the much acclaimed "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" as well as iconic animated Batman episodes like "Heart of Ice," was going to helm isn't clear.
Why did the project collapse? The failure of the R-rated "Watchmen" at Warners put the fear in the studio over R-rated superhero movies. Cut to seven years later and "Deadpool" is at the top of the box-office while Timm's protege Sam Liu is slated to helm an upcoming Dcau direct-to-disc & VOD adaptation of "The Killing Joke" which is currently on the way.

In this week's Los Fanboys Podcast, we touched on R-rated superhero flicks, and the fact that we don't expect there to ever be a live-action Batman that features the adult-only rating. One of the film projects I'm most excited about seeing this year is DC Entertainment's animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke. The movie will be based on Alan Moore's comic, which is one of the darkest Batman stories ever told. It's so dark that the movie might get slapped with an R-rating. A few months ago, producer James Tucker revealed that Warner Bros. gave them permission to make an R-rated animated film. Due to the subject matter of the comic, it seems like it would be hard not to get that kind of rating. It didn't mean the movie would be rated R, though. This is crazy story follows The Joker as he escapes from Arkham Asylum and shoots Barbara Gordon, paralyzing her in order to terrorize her father, Jim Gordon.

Happy to say that you guys are gonna finally get your animated Killing Joke adaptation in 2016. Fans of the DC Universe direct-to-video animated movies should be thrilled to hear that the voice cast has been officially announced for 2016’s second release, Justice League vs. Teen Titans. Featuring a staggering amount of DC’s finest heroes from varying generations, we can only assume this movie will deliver much excitement and fan service.
The Teen Titans lineup itself will be composed of Robin/Damian Wayne (Stuart Allan), Nightwing (Sean Maher), Starfire (Kari Wahlgren), Blue Beetle (Jake T. Austin), Beast Boy (Brandon Soo Hoo), Raven (Taissa Farmiga), and the most interesting addition, Cyborg (Shemar Moore). Sure, Cyborg is historically known to be in the Teen Titans, but has been aligned with the Justice League in various forms of media since 2011. So, it should definitely be interesting to see what series of events force him to switch his allegiance.
As for the Justice League, expect the following characters to return:...

The DC Universe Animated Original Movies line has delivered some absolutely terrific comic book adaptations (Jay Oliva’s two-part Batman: The Dark Knight Returns comes to mind), and also some thoroughly mediocre ones (like most of the Superman entries). It’s impressive how much work goes into animating these direct-to-video titles, but a fair share of them have been unfortunately sidetracked by stilted voice acting and weak writing.
Son of Batman, which loosely adapts Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert’s “Batman and Son” arc, is far from the worst of the Dcu Animated titles, though that’s probably the highest praise I can give it. While the animation is damn-near flawless, and the voice acting is mostly above average, this tonally dissonant offering ends up taking on more story than it can handle.

I don’t know what was in the water at WonderCon this year, but the animosity from the crowd during the Son of Batman presentation on Saturday was palpable. Had DC Animation’s latest offering been a bad film, perhaps it would have warranted the kinds of questions and challenges the audience were posing. But the movie, which premiered before the panel, was very well done, packing in plenty of humor and lots of surprisingly graphic action (full review coming soon). The audience received it well, but then the Q&A session started and all hell broke loose.
The gracious panel consisted of producer James Tucker, voice director Andrea Romano, character designer Phil Bourassa, and members of the cast including Jason O'Mara (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Stuart Allan (Damian Wayne), Xander Berkeley (Kirk Langstrom), and Sean Maher (Nightwing). There was a lot of love thrown Romano’s way, with every other...

In the newest clip from Son of Batman, Damian Wayne attacks shrubbery (I'm not joking). The clip doesn't really get me excited for the movie. The blocking just really falls flat visually, but then again it's a fairly mundane scene. I fully expect the more action filled parts to be stronger.
They will be premiering Son of Batman at WonderCon on Friday, April 18th at 6pm in The Arena after the panel. The cast and crew in attendance will be Jason O'Mara (Batman), Sean Maher (Nightwing), Xander Berkeley (Langstrom), Stuart Allan (Damian) -- and filmmakers James Tucker (producer), Ethan Spaulding (director), Phil Bourassa (character designer), and Andrea Romano (dialogue director).
These panels are always a lot of fun, and being able to watch the movie after is just the cherry on top. Son of Batman comes to Blu-ray on May 6th. Wonder if there is a scene with Batman searching for a shrubbery (Ni!

Some our readers applied for (and many won) tickets for the World Premiere of Justice League: War tonight at The Paley Center for Media in New York.
According to a Warner Bros spokesman, “The city is being battered with a powerful snowstorm, but not strong enough to withstand the Justice League … so the show will go on as planned.”
Christopher Gorham (the voice of Flash), producer James Tucker, director Jay Oliva, dialogue director Andrea Romano and character designer Phil Bourassa will still be hand for this premiere showing. Some very exclusive prizes will also be given away.
