While everyone is talking about the next live-action Lord of the Rings film, the Hunt for Gollum, which will include Peter Jackson making a comeback to the franchise, WB Animation has been quietly working on its previously announced Lord of the Rings animated picture.
First revealed in June 2021 during 20th anniversary celebrations of the film franchise, WB shared the first details on The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
Described as an anime movie, the project was subsequently confirmed to be a collaboration between WB Animation and Tokyo-based Solo Entertainment.
Earlier this week, WB Animation confirmed that The War of the Rohirrim would be showcased at next month's Annecy Film Festival and also released three hi-res versions of previously released conceptual images from the film. Specifically, the first footage from the film will be showcased (and hopefully) uploaded near the time of the panel.

Greek mythology is perhaps one of the most overused settings in popular culture. It has been used everywhere from the God of War video games to movies and TV shows like Percy Jackson and the Olympians. So it's all the more amazing to see an original animated series from Netflix that manages to tell a story that's both familiar and entirely new, spiced with a fair amount of horror and gore.
Fans of high-quality animation, Greek mythology and spectacular action should not miss Blood of Zeus from the creators of Castlevania.
What is Blood of Zeus About?
The young man Heron and his mother Electra live in an unnamed Greek polis. The inhabitants of the town do not like the couple: they blame them for any misfortune and sometimes try to throw stones at them.
But when the settlement is attacked by demons, it turns out that it is Heron...

The recent success of Netflix’s original animated ventures didn’t happen overnight, and a lion’s share of the credit should go to some of the streaming service’s earliest animated titles, Castlevania and Blood of Zeus. While the first one redefines the established game lore of the same name with a quasi-historical setting and modern sensibility, Blood of Zeus depends on the age-old formula of demigod legacy, challenging the established status quo of the divine creators, inspired by legends like Perseus or Hercules.
Free from the burden of stringent adherence to a singular lore, Greek mythology is effectively a treasure trove for experimentation on character dynamics. The makers of Blood of Zeus utilized this aspect in the best possible way as they took viewers through the journey of Heron and Seraphim while navigating through the world of gods and monsters, questioning the humanity of the associated characters the whole while.

Many times in life the anticipation is stronger than the fulfillment.
Few things were more anticipated in recent movie history than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” On many levels, it did almost live up to the hype: It’s still the number-one domestic box-office hit of all time in the U.S., unadjusted for inflation. Its reviews were overwhelmingly positive. It opened up a whole new era of storytelling for the franchise and deftly balanced the return of beloved characters from the Original Trilogy — Harrison Ford, in particular, delivering the most moving performance he ever gave as Han Solo — while introducing dynamic rising stars. It may have been overly indebted to “A New Hope” and mired in a few too many callbacks, but on the whole, “Force Awakens” was a movie that mined the deep emotion fans have for the franchise while pointing a path forward.

In Greek mythology, cuckoo birds were sacred creatures to the goddess Hera. Elsewhere, like in Europe and the United States, the cuckoo is often associated with the clock that imitates its birdsong, Coca Puffs, or as the name of origin for the words "cuck" and "cuckoldry," as the bird leaves its eggs in other nests and tricks other birds into raising its young (get it?). For Tilman Singer's new horror film, "Cuckoo" is a bonkers, bloody rollercoaster of terrorizing sound design and dynamic performances that feels like it could fall off the rails at any moment.
Fortunately, "Cuckoo" commits to its strange, sinister logic with fearlessness and refuses to play into formulaic movie logic while dangling familiar tropes like a hunter baiting prey, making this screeching ride of repulsive body horror wanting another go around. Admittedly, it might be hard to make sense of how some of the first-act...

You know Zeus. Greek god of thunder, curly hair, luscious big beard, turns into a swan? You’ve seen his face on statues in parks and on tile mosaics behind the counter in kebab shops.
That’s not the Zeus in Netflix’s new fantasy drama Kaos, from Charlie Covell, screenwriter of The End of the F***ing World. As played by Jeff Goldblum, the Zeus of Kaos looks more Tony Soprano than beardy all-father. And home-of-the-gods Mount Olympus? Think a lavishly appointed mansion such as you might see on Selling Sunset instead of a bucolic paradise crawling with nymphs and fauns.
Covell’s vision of Greek myth clearly comes with a modern twist, hence Zeus’ Casio watch and leisure suit collection in the first teaser trailer below:
As Goldblum explained at a recent Netflix slate preview event: “One may say it’s about the Gods, but a different version of the Gods.

Alexander the Great was an objectively terrible person. The 4th century Bce Macedonian king and military leader came to power when his father was assassinated, and immediately had any rivals for the throne killed. When Alexander executed a man who had conspired against him, he had the man’s father killed as well, just to make sure he could not try to avenge his son. This might be explained away as a powerful ruler doing what was necessary to protect himself, but that does not excuse his murder of Cleitus – a man who had earlier saved his life – in a drunken rage. Alexander’s stated aim was to conquer the whole world, something that should surely make him a villain in any version of his story. Emperors who kill and take over other people’s land are usually the bad guys.
And yet, we are obsessed with him, and have been for over 2,000 years.

Grand Admiral Thrawn is poised to be the next big villain in the "Star Wars" franchise. The classic character created by author Timothy Zahn in the '90s finally made his live-action debut last year in the first season of "Ahsoka." But that was just the beginning. The end of the season set up Thrawn as a major threat who will undoubtedly return in the show's second season, if not on the big screen as well in the coming years (more on that in a moment). Now, Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni has shed some light on what might be in store for Thrawn in the future. Or, more specifically, who might be in store for the blue-skinned expert tactician.
Filoni, who is the main creative force behind "Ahoska" as well as animated shows like "The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels," recently spoke with Empire about Thrawn's future.

Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…
It would be disingenuous to suggest that Atom Egoyan’s The Adjuster is a horror film.
Psychological thriller is more apt descriptor, though audiences seeking scary set pieces will walk away unsatisfied. Despite this, The Adjuster has a narrative of thriller tropes, including a large number of psychosexual relationships, characters adopting dual roles (or simply role playing) and an ending that encourages audiences to re-evaluate what they have seen.
Egoyan is one of Canada’s most significant contemporary directors, though internationally his work is known principally in art cinema and film festival circles. In the 90s, Egoyan was a symbol of national pride; he, along with David Cronenberg, was essentially the face of English-language Canadian film. [This story contains spoilers for Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.]
Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Mary Elizabeth Winstead had to let two exciting projects in Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off speak for themselves, but now she’s finally looking back on her rather significant 2023.
In early 2022, Winstead officially joined the Star Wars galaxy in order to bring the beloved animated character of General Hera Syndulla to live-action for the first time. When the offer originally came in from Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, it allowed Winstead the opportunity to reunite with Rosario Dawson 16 years after they last shared the screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. It also presented her the chance to join the storied franchise that she already had a great deal of familiarity with, as her life partner, Ewan McGregor, has been playing Obi-Wan Kenobi since the late ‘90s and had just wrapped his own eponymously titled Star Wars Disney+ series.

“Ahsoka” Season 2 is in development with creator Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm has confirmed.
The news came with the reveal of the new “Star Wars” film “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” directed by Jon Favreau, which was unveiled Tuesday morning.
“‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ will lead Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, who is also currently developing ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2, among those in the works,” the announcement said.
“Ahsoka,” which aired its Season 1 finale on Oct. 3, starred Rosario Dawson as the fan-favorite Jedi, who’s trying to save the galaxy from Grand Admiral Thrawn, a new threat after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Dawson first brought Ahsoka Tano to live-action in “The Mandalorian” Season 2 and also appeared on “The Book of Boba Fett.”

As another year of horror ends, we reflect on the best this genre had to offer. Usually, that means focusing on those movies that drew the most attention. However, there are also those movies that slipped under everyone’s radars for whatever reason, ultimately causing them to be overlooked. So the objective here is to bring more attention to these releases as horror fans play catch-up.
Like last year, 2023 was a strong year for horror. And these ten hidden gems might have escaped notice at the time, but it’s never too late to discover them now.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” utilizes an interesting mix of ancient and modern for its story of demigods in the contemporary world trying to undo the petty grudges and unintended consequences of the Greek Gods’ wrath (as they always are). Production designer Dan Hennah and costume designer Tish Monaghan blend archetypical hoplite gear with goofy orange camp T-shirts; the show gives the mythological entities that Percy (Walter Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Jeffries), and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) encounter free reign to assert their personalities through clothing, style, and, in the case of Mr. D (Jason Mantzoukas), a mild addiction to Diet Coke.
So in honor of that inventive melding of ancient stories with the modern baggage of American pop culture, we found 12 different examples of depictions of the Greek gods in film and television. Now, we’re talking just the classic 12 Olympians here. You should absolutely stop reading this article and turn...

At the start of 2023, nobody knew we were getting a live-action Thrawn in :a[Star Wars]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/star-wars-timeline-chronological-order/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}. But at Star Wars Celebration, Dave Filoni unveiled the big news: not only was the Grand Admiral – so beloved from various canon and Legends novels, and from Star Wars Rebels – stepping into :a[Ahsoka]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/tv/reviews/ahsoka/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, but he would be played by Lars Mikkelsen, the very voice actor who brought his menacing whispered tones to Rebels’ animated incarnation. Now it’s official: Thrawn is back, back, back in the main Star Wars galaxy, and ready to cause chaos for the New Republic.
As for what his plan actually entails, Dave Filoni teased a few hints of what comes after his return from exile. Speaking to Empire for our...

This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Ahsoka hasn’t yet been officially renewed for another season, but with all of the loose threads left by the season 1 finale, it’s hard not to dream about where season 2 could take these characters.
With Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson), Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno), and Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) now stranded on Peridea and Thrawn (Lars Mikkelson) returning home with an army of entombed Nightsisters in tow, there is a lot at stake across not just one, but two galaxies. Now that the Nightsisters have officially made a comeback in the New Republic era, I can’t think of a better character to bring into Ahsoka than Nightsister Merrin (Tina Ivlev).
First introduced in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Merrin has since appeared in the 2023 sequel Star Wars...

Ezra Bridger actor Eman Esfandi just admitted he purposefully avoided watching all of Star Wars: Rebels ahead of his time filming Ahsoka.
The latest Star Wars Disney+ series brought a ton of characters from the animated Rebels show into live-action for the first time—meaning, every one of them had a legacy to keep in mind.
Thankfully, actors Rosario Dawson and Natasha Liu Bordizzo have both been very vocal about having done their research before tackling the characters of Ahsoka and Sabine. Even Mary Elizabeth Winstead confirmed she watched all of Hera’s previous appearances before becoming the fan-favorite Star Wars general.

The Mandalorian’s Katee Sackhoff expects there to be a crossover between Bo-Katan and Ahsoka Tano at some point in the future.
While Bo took back Mandalore, Rosario Dawson’s former Jedi was working with Sabine Wren and Hera to stop new enemies from finding and bringing back Grand Admiral Thrawn from a distant galaxy.
While they failed to do that, the team did get reunited with the exiled Ezra Bridger.

Ezra Bridger actor Eman Esfandi had the perfect social media reaction after his performance in Ahsoka's finale.
From fighting alongside Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren against Grand Admiral Thrawn's forces to creating a new lightsaber that even has a connection to Kanan Jarrus, Ahsoka Episode 8 showcased several memorable moments featuring Ezra.
Although the finale ended with Ahsoka and Sabine stranded in Peridea, the fact that Ezra got home and reunited with Hera and Chopper is still a win for Star Wars Rebels fans.

Warning: This article discusses major spoilers for the "Ahsoka" season 1 finale.
Even as far back as when "Ahsoka" was first announced and it became more and more apparent that this new show would act as a sequel to "Star Wars Rebels," I've had one obvious question burning at the forefront of my mind: Why make this into a live-action series, rather than another animated one? After all, fans first fell head-over-heels in love with heroes like Ahsoka, Ezra, Sabine, Hera, and Kanan because of their distinctive and wonderfully expressive character designs, their pitch-perfect voice actors, and the grand adventures they experienced together within a medium that allowed for endless amounts of creativity and imagination. To strip such core traits away from these Rebels, recast (most of) them with a bunch of lookalikes, and drop them in unfamiliar and jarring live-action environments is to misunderstand what made them so appealing in the first place.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is expected to have a bright future ahead of her as Hera Syndulla, and Ahsoka may have set it up in a big way.
Star Wars has now brought all of the Star Wars Rebels crew, at least those still alive, into live-action in the MandoVerse timeline. One of those major players, Ghost pilot Hera Syndulla, was brought to life for the first time in Ahsoka where she was played by Scott Pilgrim and Birds of Prey actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Winstead - who is also married to Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Ewan McGregor - has been open about the challenges of bringing Hera to life, along with her excitement at the introduction of her on-screen son Jacen Syndulla.

The Ahsoka finale, “The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord,” invites many questions. What exactly is the deal with the zombie Night Troopers? Why would a witch need a sword? What has been motivating ex-Jedi Baylan Skoll? Why does Grand Admiral Thrawn look so much like Elon Musk, when actor Lars Mikkelsen in real life does not resemble the owner of the social media network formerly known as Twitter?
Most importantly, though, is this: Exactly...

This bird is a Convor named Morai, with personal ties to Ahsoka and the Mortis Gods, whose statues are shown towards the end of the episode.

Ahsoka Episode 8
“The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord” caps off Ahsoka with an ending that, when compared to the powerful cliffhanger in Rebels that set all of these events in motion, pales in comparison. The episode itself has its highlights as well as quite a few lows, but when you look at the bigger picture that was painted over the course of the eight chapters, this grand finale sadly doesn’t feel all that grand, and it certainly doesn’t reach the great heights of more thrilling, poignant episodes like “Shadow Warrior” and “Far Far Away.”
The heroes are left in precarious positions by episode’s end: Ahsoka, Sabine, and Huyang are stranded on Peridea, and Ezra has returned home to reunite with Hera and Chopper (where’s Zeb?!) and deliver the worst news ever: Thrawn is on his way back to...

It all comes down to one final battle in the Nightsister fortress on Peridia. Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra have managed to make it through the barrage of laser fire from Grand Admiral Thrawn’s Star Destroyer and are now climbing up the tower. Standing in their way are a horde of undead Night Troopers and the newly inducted witch, Lady Morgan Elsbeth, who now wields the powerful Blade of Talzin. But while the heroes are able to slice and shoot their way through these obstacles, including taking down Morgan once and for all, they’re ultimately too late to stop Thrawn’s escape.
We watch as the Chimaera zips away from Peridia, while Ahsoka, Sabine, and Huyang are left stranded in this new galaxy with no way to get home. Instead, they’ll have to figure out a new path in this unexplored part of space,...

The first season of “Ahsoka” wrapped on Tuesday night with enough cliffhangers for another season … and/or a “Star Wars” movie (more on that later).
At the end of Episode 7, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) had finally reunited with Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) on Peridea. While Sabine’s primary goal was to reunite with Ezra, Ahsoka remained focused on stopping Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) from returning from exile.
Read of if you want to find out what happened in the Season 1 finale of “Ahsoka” and where the characters could possibly go from here.
Spoiler alert: This post contains plot points from the season finale of “Ahsoka.” Proceed with caution.
For finding Thrawn (and consequently the Great Mothers), Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) was given a reward. The Great Mothers empowered the Nightsister and forged a Blade of Talzin for her — a sword that glows green with mystical energy.

And with that, "Ahsoka" season 1 has come to an end. Though it now very much feels like the end of a first season that will give way to a second season, as there is much left to resolve. In some ways, things are just getting started, as Grand Admiral Thrawn finally made his grand return to the galaxy after being trapped in exile in a different galaxy that was far, far away, for more than a decade. The heir to the Empire is clearly going to try and re-establish Imperial rule under his thumb. But how exactly is he going to do that? This episode provided some answers, and Thrawn's plans are, in a word, dark.

Spoiler Alert: This recap contains spoilers from the Season 1 finale of Disney+/Lucasfilm’s Ahsoka, directed by Rick Famuyiwa and written by Dave Filoni.
Heading into tonight’s Season 1 finale of Ahsoka, fans knew we were flying to a cliffhanger; that Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) would make the jump to hyperspace via the space loop while some portion of Ahsoka and friends would be left behind without a prayer in the midst of the green tundra tumbleweeds of Peridea in a galaxy far, far away.
What didn’t happen in this episode were any major cameos from Star Wars canon dramatis personae of yore, i.e., Princess Leia or Luke Skywalker or Boba Fett or Baby Yoda. No, we got our fill of that with C-3Po in the last episode, when he appeared to defend Hera’s rogue mission before the snarky Galactic council.
Where do we go from here?...

Disney’s Ahsoka premiered its seventh episode today, and it showcases a reunion between two of the fan-favorite characters in the show. The previous episode witnessed Sabine Wren finally meeting Ezra Bridgers, years after his disappearance, but she was still worried about Ahsoka. Moreover, Thrawn had sent his scouts Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati on the lookout for the Jedi and had instructed them to eliminate both when the chance arose. This episode ties up a lot of loose ends, but it leaves a lot more questions unanswered.
