Netflix Is Producing a Rom-Com Based on Antoni Porowski's Dating Life, and Hello, Yes, I'm Listening
Netflix is reportedly developing a romantic comedy created by Queer Eye's Antoni Porowski and Black-ish creative Kenya Barris, and hello, yep, we already need it in our lives immediately. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the feature is titled Girls & Boys, and is still in very early stages. To date, all we really know is that it will be loosely based on Porowski's dating life as a sexually fluid man, and that he worked with Barry to develop the story.
Andrew Rhymer and Jeff Chan (the filmmakers behind Hulu's rom-com Plus One) have been tapped to pen the screenplay for Girls & Boys, and so far those are all the details we have. Sadly, there's no word yet on whether there'll be a Jonathan Van Ness character as a playful faux love interest or a group of gorgeous friends who make ordinary people's dreams come true - we can only hope.

I’ll say it straight away. I don’t really like romantic comedies or ‘rom-coms’ as they are better known. Hate is probably too strong a word but I can count on one hand how many I have enjoyed. And I have to say pretty much they exact same thing about weddings. They’re generally long, bring affairs and I’ve thankfully not been invited to many (maybe there’s a link there?!). So a romantic comedy about weddings might seem like the last thing I’d choose to watch but I do like to at least give ‘new’ things a go.
I’m very glad I did. Plus One had me smiling from start to finish. It’s a simple story.

Two wisecracking single friends attend endless, mortifying nuptials together in a predictable mashup of previous romantic hits
Here is a boilerplate romantic comedy from first-time feature directors Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer, co-writers of the Hulu TV comedy PEN15, whose star Maya Erskine now takes the female lead. It is a formulaic mashup of Four Weddings and a Funeral and My Best Friend’s Wedding.
Erskine plays Alice, a smart Japanese-American woman who has just had a tough breakup with her boyfriend; her dorky best friend, Ben (Jack Quaid), is also single. So they agree to be each other’s plus one at all the mortifying weddings they’ve got invited to this year. Ben and Alice are always wisecracking and kidding around together and mocking the cute nonsense of weddings, and Alice is always setting Ben up with the attractive women they see there. (“I totally microwaved that hot meet-cute for you!

Even indie romantic comedies seem to be getting into the more-is-bigger-is-hopefully-better ethos of action movies. Add six weddings to the titular number in that 1994 Hugh Grant-Andie MacDowell classic of the genre (then subtract that funeral) and you’ve got ten nuptials across which the modest, frisky charmer “Plus One” brings its teasingly antagonistic protagonists (played by Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid) from the friend zone to the meant-to-be realm.
The reality, of course, is that getting invited to multiple weddings in a single year is hardly the stuff of screenwriters’ imagination, especially when one is ten years out of college, rich in coupled-up friends, and from a family with either eligible siblings or a dating parent. Such is the age-specific romance epidemic writers-directors Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer place their irritably single but searching characters into, and it makes for a serviceably fertile, love-surrounded setting in which to...

People often ponder during every stage of their life if and when they’re supposed to be doing the same as everyone around them. One major consideration young adults often face is whether they should follow in their friends and peers’ footsteps, and get married. That contemplation is a powerful motivator for the two main protagonists […]

"I'll set you up so you can do your thang, you know!" Rlje Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Plus One, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival just last month. This fresh take on the still-single-at-friends-wedding comedy is about two longtime single friends who agree to be each other's plus one at every wedding they've been invited to. Set over a summer of weddings – Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid star as Alice and Ben, respectively. And the cast also includes Beck Bennett, Rosalind Chao, Perrey Reeves, and Ed Begley, Jr. This looks and sounds and seems like pretty much every other singles romantic comedy where they realize that yes, as they literally say in this trailer, waiting for someone perfect doesn't lead you anywhere. And the right person is right in front of you. These are always the same. Here's the first official...

“Plus One” is proof of the continued vitality of traditional romantic comedy formulas. Yet far more thrillingly, it’s a testament to star power — which it has in spades, courtesy of Maya Erskine (Hulu’s “Pen15”), whose lead turn in writers-directors Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer’s winning film would, in a just world, make her an immediate A-lister. As a single woman who forges a pact with her college friend to attend their litany of summer weddings together, Erskine has a force of personality — and whip-crack comedic timing — that energizes this superior brand of amorous adventure. Genre fans won’t want to miss it when Rlje Films releases it in theaters and on VOD in June, following its Tribeca Film Festival premiere.
