Heading into Cannes, where it has four films in official selection and three projects participating in the Great 8 showcase, BBC Film has unveiled further details about its upcoming slate.
Among new projects in advanced development is Remi Weekes’ follow-up to His House, which is being produced by Tanya Segatchian and John Woodward’s Bright Star. Details for the untitled feature are being kept under wraps but BBC Film director Eva Yates told Screen: “It’s not a horror.”
Also in advanced development is Raine Allen-Miller’s second feature after Rye Lane, a south London-set heist comedy that she has also written.

For our most comprehensive year-end feature we’re providing a cumulative look at The Film Stage’s favorite films of 2023. We’ve asked contributors to compile ten-best lists with five honorable mentions––some of those personal selections will be shared in coming weeks––and from tallied votes has this top 50 been assembled.
Without further ado, check out our rundown of 2023 below, our ongoing year-end coverage here (including where to watch many of the below picks, both on streaming and in theaters), and return in the coming weeks as we look towards 2024.
50. Sick of Myself (Kristoffer Borgli)
Kristoffer Borgli’s first Norwegian feature is a work of disgusting, hilarious, horrifying genius. Signe (played brilliantly by Kristine Kujath Thorp) is an early-20s narcissist who, galled by the success of her equally self-centered boyfriend, spirals into full-on Munchausen syndrome. As timely as it is hard to watch, Sick of Myself doesn’t...

The BAFTAs have a soft spot for home-grown talent. Earlier this year, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” scored four bids at the British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor (Daryl McCormack) and Best Actress (Emma Thompson). Before that, in 2022, Adeel Akhtar snuck into the Best Actor lineup for “Ali & Ava” and Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for “After Love.”

After Love
A transcendent chamber piece, Aleem Khan’s feature-length directorial debut is graced with an exceptional lead performance from Joanna Scanlan as an English woman who converted to Islam for marriage years ago — only to discover, when her husband dies, that he was living a shocking double life. It’s a miraculous study of grief, jealousy and ultimately compassion, all executed with very little dialogue. — Leslie Felperin
Are You There God? It’S Me, Margaret
Kelly Fremon Craig’s adaptation of the classic Judy Blume novel about a girl on the cusp of puberty is charming, heartwarming, and beautifully acted and scored. But its magic comes from its respectful reanimation of the source material: The film stays close to Margaret and her emotions, using them to honor an already sturdy narrative while also expanding our understanding of the world around her. — Lovia Gyarkye

Ordinarily, The Hollywood Reporter doesn’t review films that were released more than a year ago. But an exception had to be made for After Love, a transcendent chamber piece that was slated to debut in Critics’ Week at the 2020 edition of Cannes — the one that didn’t actually take place. Even without that high-profile launching pad, the film nevertheless went on to garner awards and praise in its domestic markets (the U.K. and France) and beyond, especially for lead Joanna Scanlan. Her exceptional performance as Mary/Fatima, an English woman who converted to Islam for marriage years ago and suddenly finds out that her husband was leading a double life, is a miraculous study of grief, jealousy and ultimately compassion, all executed with very little dialogue.

As the crow flies, only about 30 miles separate the port towns of Dover and Calais — a distance that, in many parts of the world, wouldn’t span any greater culture shift than a slight tweak in accent. When those miles are filled with the English Channel, however, opposite coastlines represent opposite worlds, where everything from language to sexual mores are poles apart. It’s a short but jolting journey, an exercise in social and geographic disorientation that British-Pakistani filmmaker Aleem Khan probes to layered, thoughtful effect in his auspicious first feature “After Love.”
Galvanized by Joanna Scanlan’s quiet, searing turn as a white Muslim widow piecing together the separate lives her late husband led on both shores, Khan’s debut confidently blends old-school melodrama with a contemporary political consciousness, suggesting broader, Brexit-era cross-cultural friction while maintaining an intimate domestic focus. Selected for the Critics’ Week program of 2020’s nixed Cannes festival,...

Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has been named the best film of 2021 at the Ee British Academy Film Awards, which were presented on Sunday in London by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Campion’s Western drama has been a favorite all awards season, and it is the one major film not to have a significant stumble on the road to the Academy Awards, which will take place in two weeks. Although questions remain about its vulnerability under the Academy’s preferential system of vote counting, the BAFTA win is a strong indicator that it remains the film to beat, even if BAFTA and Oscar voters have only agreed once in the past eight years.
Will Smith won the leading actor award for “King Richard,” with Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”) the only other Oscar nominee in the category. In the leading actress category,...

BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs had a challenging year in 2021, ricocheting among progress, stasis and scandal, and ending up somewhere in the middle. Their mission, following an outcry over the previous year’s white ceremony — with no acting nominees of color, no women up for the director prize, and Sam Mendes’ “1917” prevailing over Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” in the major races — was to diversify the awards, and fast. This year’s film ceremony is set for March 13 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
To that end, drastic changes were made, with the performance and directing categories handed over to small nomination committees (including some nonBAFTA members) who could curate more eclectic, progressive nominee fields from the branchvoted longlists. The fix was immediately effective, as BAFTA revealed a fresh, surprising and suitably diverse slate. Suddenly, two-thirds of the acting nominees were performers of color, including homegrown talents — Wunmi Mosaku and Bukky Bakray...

A diverse set of contenders and panoply of worthy potential winners mean 2022’s ceremony can get the Baftas back on track
Baftas 2022: the full list of nominationsDune and The Power of the Dog lead Baftas as awards move on from Noel Clarke
Bafta must hope that its nominations mark a fresh start after a year of pure mortification for that body caused by the Noel Clarke debacle: screenwriter-actor-director Clarke was presented in 2021 with the outstanding contribution to cinema award, despite accusations against him of bullying and abuse. Clarke denied accusations of sexual misconduct and the award finally had to be suspended. But this year’s list is very lively: the best director section is not lacking in inclusivity and good taste: Aleem Khan, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Audrey Diwan, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jane Campion and Julia Ducournau.

The BAFTA Film Awards nominations announced this afternoon in London offer up a diverse crop, and the highest number of female nominees on record; they’re also notable for a strong British presence and Will Smith’s first-ever mention.
There is one category — Director — that stands out as a bit of a head-scratcher. Not necessarily in a bad way, but surprising nevertheless. The field has an equal split of male and female filmmakers, however the list strays far from the recent DGA nominations, and barely aligns with the Best Film race at BAFTA.
One explanation for the non-alignment could be that BAFTA’s Director nominees are chosen by a nominating jury, while the Best Film nominees are voted on by the entire membership.

“Dune” led all films in nominations for the 2022 Ee British Academy Film Awards, which were announced on Thursday by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic received 11 nominations, with Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” receiving eight, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” landing six and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza,” Cary Joji Fukunaga’s “No Time to Die” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” receiving five each.
In the Best Film category, “Dune,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Belfast” and “Licorice Pizza” will compete with Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up.”
As usual for BAFTA since rule changes last year designed to make the nominations more diverse and give smaller films a chance, the director and acting categories were long on indie films and diverged wildly from the favorites expected to receive Oscar nominations on Feb. 8.
