Spotify’s relationship with the Sussexes was, in the end, a mess.
The two parties formally ended their exclusive podcast deal on June 15 in the press after The Wall Street Journal reported that Spotify was not renewing Meghan Markle’s Archetypes show for a second season and the duchess was “continuing to develop more content for the Archetypes audience on another platform, according to a statement shared with the paper that was first attributed to a spokesperson for Archewell Productions before being changed to WME, which signed Markle and Archewell in April.
The Journal story is believed to have ultimately fast-tracked the end of the Spotify-Archewell relationship, which had still been in place prior to the story’s publication but concluded with a carefully worded joint statement released that evening announcing the two parties had “mutually agreed to part ways.” But Spotify’s Bill Simmons, who leads podcast monetization for the audio company,...

The TikTokification of Spotify has begun.
The audio giant is refreshing its home page with a vertical feed that is meant to better integrate Spotify’s offerings across music, podcasts, videos and audiobooks. Users will be given video previews of music and podcasts that they can scroll through, with recommendations powered by machine learning, on the home feed, executives said at Spotify’s Stream On event on Wednesday.
“This marks the biggest change Spotify has undergone since we introduced mobile 10 years ago,” Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said. “This evolution is really about bringing Spotify to life.”
The major product updates come as part of Spotify’s goal to reach 1 billion users by 2030, which would be double what Spotify currently has in 184 markets, according to Alex Norström, Spotify’s co-president and chief business officer. The changes to the home feed and user experience are meant to lean into Spotify as a discoverability tool,...

As James Gunn and Peter Safran reshape the DC universe at Warner Bros. Discovery, film and TV aren’t the only mediums where iconic characters like Batman, Harley Quinn and the Joker are taking on new lives.
Thanks to an expansive, multiyear first-look deal with Spotify, DC has attracted new and returning fans to its rich IP — without being beholden to the intricacies of a mapped-out multiverse, the same actors portraying its characters or the costs of a typical high-wattage and effects-heavy superhero production.
The partnership kicked off in earnest last year, when Spotify and DC released an original story about Batman for an audio series penned by The Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer. Starring Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne, Batman Unburied took on a decidedly darker tone as a psychological thriller that followed Bruce tracking down a serial killer and confronting his own demons along the way. Nearly 30 people are set to be hit by layoffs at CBS Studios and Paramount TV Studios, which will be merged with Paramount+’s scripted team, an individual with knowledge confirmed to TheWrap.
Back in October, George Cheeks, president and CEO at CBS and chief content officer of News & Sports at Paramount+ took over the shepherding of both studios. At the time, Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish alluded that Paramount TV Studios, headed by president Nicole Clemens, and CBS Studios, led by president David Stapf, would work in conjunction with one another.
Per an internal memo from Cheeks’ office, obtained by TheWrap, CBS Studios and Ptvs are remaining largely intact and independent from each other, though department heads will “support and work across” both brands in the spirit of “healthy collaboration.”

Updated: Deadline earlier today broke the news that Julie McNamara is leaving her post as EVP and Head of Programming for Paramount+.
In his company memo announcing McNamara’s exit, Tom Ryan, ViacomCBS’ President & CEO, Streaming, didn’t name an interim replacement and did not address when a replacement would be named. Instead, he said, “I’ll have more to share in the coming weeks on our content structure and look forward to sharing further details about how we will continue to bring the best content from across ViacomCBS to Paramount+.”
The wording hinted that the structure of how content is developed for the streamer likely will change. I hear no plan for a potential realignment had been presented to McNamara whose decision to depart was not related to her role possibly shifting, sources said. Paramount Television Studios head Nicole Clemens is emerging as the likeliest candidate to oversee Paramount Plus’ original scripted programming amid a broader streaming content leadership shakeup at parent company ViacomCBS, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The move comes after Paramount Plus head of programming Julie McNamara, a 15-year-veteran of ViacomCBS, announced her departure Thursday.
Paramount declined to comment.
If Clemens takes the reins, Paramount Plus’ scripted programming and Paramount TV would both roll up to the well-liked exec. Sources say Paramount Plus, nee CBS All Access, needs a strong content leader to help them sort out their programming needs from ViacomCBS’ massive array of brands, including scheduling and timing. This scenario would poise Clemens to report to George Cheeks, CBS Entertainment Group president as well as Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos.

“Julie’s work and strong relationships with creators and talent led the way for the very first originals on CBS All Access, many of which are still top performers for Paramount +, including ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and the beloved ‘The Good Fight,'” Tom Ryan, ViacomCBS’ president and CEO, said in an internal memo. “Julie and her team have continued to...

The creative team behind CBS All Access’ adaptation of The Stand knows you might be wary of watching a show centered on a deadly virus. The miniseries’ premiere, after all, drops familiar words like “quarantine” and “tested positive,” and there’s a whole lotta coughing — all of which we’ve seen and heard quite often during the real-life coronavirus pandemic.
But for those unfamiliar with the Stephen King novel on which The Stand is based, executive producers Benjamin Cavell and Taylor Elmore can assure you the show is more than just an eerie mirror of our current world. In fact,...

The Good Fight is losing another series regular.
Cush Jumbo, who has been with the CBS All Access series since its debut, is exiting ahead of its fifth season.
TV Line first reported the news.
Unfortunately, there may not be any on-screen resolution for Luca Quinn because of the Covid-19 crisis, which brought The Good Fight Season 4 to a grinding halt with three episodes unproduced.
However, the actress is open to returning to end her character arc if the schedules allow it to happen.
Jumbo first played the character on The Good Wife, the show the series spun off from.
“I have had the most amazing time over the last five years working with Robert, Michelle and the crews of both The Good Wife and The Good Fight," the actress said in a statement to TV Line.
"I will miss them all so much, but am so excited to explore pastures new.

The series will star Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Spock. It takes place in the decade before Captain Kirk was head of the Enterprise and feature the crew exploring new worlds around the galaxy. "Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck's portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery last season," Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming for CBS All Access, said in a statement. "This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise,...

It’s a been a bumper few years for Star Trek. Discovery and Picard have each explored different corners of the Trek universe, and now CBS All Access has just confirmed that they’re going to be joined by Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This new show – which We Got This Covered first told you about months ago – will focus on the adventures of Captain Pike, Spock and Number One, continuing their stories after season 2 of Discovery and apparently taking them almost to the point where The Original Series begins.
The show was announced via a video from Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romjin in which they explain how excited and honored they are to continue playing their characters as they explore the titular ‘strange new worlds.’ Ordinarily, a new show like this would probably be announced with great fanfare at a convention, but for obvious reasons, those aren’t going ahead this year.

In its ever-expanding goal to be Star Trek all year round, CBS All Access has now picked up the Spock, Captain Pike and Number One starring Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to series.
With a title lifted in part from James T. Kirk’s beloved introduction to the original mother show, the third full live action show in the Alex Kurtzman-pioneered Trekverse after Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek Picard will feature Ethan Peck, Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn reprising their respective roles from Season 2 of the Sonequa Martin-Green-led Discovery.
Official confirmation of the long-rumored show would normally be perfect for either a network Upfronts or San Diego Comic Con, but neither of those are happening this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Then again, that didn’t stop the trio of leads from sending fans greetings of the new show today via video:
