A beautiful spring has sprung here in Austin, Texas. Bluebonnets are everywhere, it's not yet 100 degrees and, now that the city has recovered from South By Southwest, Austin will soon be celebrating the chance to prove itself in the culinary space with its first-ever Food & Wine Festival.
With chatter about "Austin cool" coming from many directions these days, the city will draw yet another national crowd from April 27 to 29 to eat, drink, learn and be merry with headliner chefs such as Masaharu Morimoto, Marcus Samuelsson, Michelle Bernstein, Gail Simmons and Tyson Cole, among many others, and music from Lucinda Williams and Mayor Hawthorne. In contrast to the Texas Hill Country fest of previous years, the Austin proper version will be centrally located, officially brought to town by Food & Wine magazine of Aspen fame, and expanded to include a line-up of local greats as well as international heavy hitters.

It’s Top Chef Texas Episode 14 entitled “Mentors”, and it’s the final episode before the Finale, which is between 2 and 7 episodes long, we’re never quite sure. We Are sure of two things that will happen in the Finale: 1) Padma will say “Here’s some helping hands that you mayyyyy recognizeeeee…” and the Last 4 Eliminated Chefs will re-enter followed by a fake-tearful reunion, and… 2) Paul wins. Seriously, this season should be called Top Bloodbath, if that name weren’t already taken by a TLC reality show about a blood bank owned by a crazy family (Grandma Edna the after-donation cookie-baker is my favvvv!!!) Before the Quickfire, Bravo finally reveals the winner of Last Chance Kitchen – will it be Beverly, or will it be Grayson’s Dateline Re-Enactment actress: We know it’s going to be Beverly because she shouldn’t have lost in the first place and we know...

"Top Chef" really is mixing things up for its ninth season.
In addition to the three-city tour of Texas, the show will now kick off with a record 29 finalists who will vie for a chef's coat. After narrowing them down in the premiere, a chosen 16 will get the coveted title of "chef'testant."
Competition will take the series to Austin, Dallas and San Antonio, where scheduled guest judges include Charlize Theron, Pee-wee Herman, Cat Cora, John Besh, Tim Love and Patti Labelle.
Previously reported additions to the judging table Emeril Lagasse and Hugh Acheson will join returning host Padma Lakshmi, head judge Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons. And Colicchio has an extra task this season. He'll host "Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen," a web series where eliminated chefs will face off in an effort to get back on the show before the finale.

People have been buzzing about the possibility, and then the reality, of Top Chef Texas, for months. Now, finally, Bravo has released serious details about the ninth season of the chef competition. The show will premiere November 2nd, at 10 pm, just in time for National Deviled Egg Day. And Zagat Buzz is reporting that Top Chef Texas guest stars will include Charlize Theron, Pee-wee Herman, Cat Cora, John Besh, Tim Love and Patti Labelle, a distinctly motley crew.
But most importantly, Bravo has released all the names and restaurant affiliations of the season's contestants. It's heavy on chefs from New York, La, Chicago and Seattle. There are even two cooks from one pioneering Windy City eatery, Moto. (Funny coincidence or an ingenious casting director strategy to drum up drama? Despite the Texan setting, there are only two chefs from the Lone Star State, and just a handful of contestants from other states in the South.

I miss Carla! (There, I said it.) With that out of the way, let’s discuss Padma’s “the envelope, please…” moment on Wednesday night’s penultimate episode of Top Chef All-Stars.

It’s the Top Chef All-stars Finale!!!! Almost! It’s the third of four Bahamas Finale episodes, entitled “The Last Supper.” Alllthough…it’s not the “Last” Supper, it’s Supper Part 3 out of 4 Last Suppers. I don’t remember That f***in’ painting, Da Vinci! Don’t act like you’re not reading this. My exes – always stalking me. It’s been an exciting season, but by this point, even B-Roll Beach Dog is ready for this thing to wrap up: So which spritely concheftant is getting sent home one week before the finale? Will It Be… Last Quickfire of everyone’s Top Chef careers after the jump: The episode opens with the standard testimonial-jabbing, with Mike gloating about his back to back wins and Richard snapping back “Good for him, he won two challenges in his two seasons of Top Chef – I’ve won 8.” Again, I love Richard,...

And then there were two. On Wednesday's Top Chef, the judges narrowly decided which of the three finalists - Richard Blais, Mike Isabella or Antonia Lofaso - would be competing in the final episode. And it was a nail biter. After a Quickfire challenge where the chefs assigned each other classic tasks from seasons past - plus an eleventh hour twist - Mike Isabella claimed another victory from guest judge Wolfgang Puck for his braised pork, which he cooked in a pressure cooker. (Antonia had to use canned products for her meal, while Richard used hot dogs in his dish.

I recently saw an article that listed Richard Blaise as one of the most annoying reality contestants of the season. While I adore Richard for his creativity and root for him to win Top Chef, I can definitely see why people would see him as a downer.
It’s also because Richard seemed so energetic and humorous in Season 4, when he was a clear favorite and brimming with enthusiasm. While he tackles challenges with the same gusto this time around, he seems to be drowning in his own doubts and neuroses as the season progresses. I really feel for the poor guy because he so desperately wants to win that he’s just a total wreck and can’t decide if he’s confident or a ball of nerves!
On the flipside, Mike is just overflowing with confidence, having won a few challenges in a row; I can’t stand his stupid grins.

"Top Chef All-Stars" is near to crowning the winner, but first the three finalists need to be wilted down to two. Richard Blais from season 4 was the first to be sent to the final round, followed by sixth season contestant Mike Isabella. Antonia Lofaso of season 4 sadly had to end her journey, leaving the boys to compete in the kitchen next week.

Contrary to what every molecule in our body is telling us, it's still not the finale of "Top Chef All-Stars." This show is the gift that keeps on giving, even when you're confused and screaming, "Bravo, why do you keep giving me gifts?"

Seated around a table at a lavish estate in the Bahamas, the Top Chef All-Stars judges are ready for their "last supper." The only ingredient that's missing? "I need a pillow to sit on," says Tom Colicchio, prompting guest judge Wolfgang Puck to request one as well. "Hey, Wolf, just sit on your wallet," quips Colicchio. "You'll be fine."
The judges crack up, but it's no laughing matter for the remaining cheftestants: The winner's billfold will be fattened with $200,000, the show's biggest prize ever. This is a Recap of Top Chef D.C. (Season 7), Episode 6, entitled “Cold War”, originally airing July 21, 2010. The Recap is a good deal shorter than usual this week because I’m getting on a plane in like three minutes, but hopefully I can convey the totality and nuance of this basic-cable reality cooking competition in less than 3600 words. Gonna be tough. It’s “Cold War” week on Top Chef! Time to prepare some food that’s cold and/or devastatingly nuclear. For this week’s Quickfire, the contestants must choose an unusual protein, much like Senators in Washington D.C. must sometimes work with unusual lobbyists whose bodies are made up of strands of protein. The contestants draw knives to determine a protein draft order, and Alex quickly snags fois gras, then other chefs snag boar, rattlesnake, llama, alligator, ostrich, and more, then the Raiders draft an unproven protein with...

It's funny how camaraderie can evaporate the minute someone feels one of their number doesn't deserve to win. On this week's episode of Top Chef: Las Vegas ("Penn and Teller"), the chefs seemed to offer a unified front, even going so far as to honor the memory of their fallen compere Mattin by donning his trademark red scarves (just how many did he pack?) in the Top Chef kitchen. It was a touching testament to how much of an emotional impact Mattin had on the chefs (even if not in a culinary sense) but that sense of community was quickly shattered by the results of the Quickfire Challenge this week. Now I've long felt that there have been several chefs still in the competition at this point who should have packed their knives a long time ago. Perhaps it's the fact that there seem to be four incredibly talented...

A little bit of magic and lots of skill -- that's what the judges demanded on Wednesday's Top Chef. The contestants were visited by Las Vegas illusionists Penn and Teller -- and graced by returning judge Toby Young. Quickfire: Special guest Michelle Bernstein announced the Quickfire challenge: Create a dish that showcases the "angel and devil" sides of your personality. Bernstein loved Robin's plate, which featured a salad and an apple crumble. "To walk into that salad was an absolute pleasure," she said, before announcing Robin the winner. She even bested frontrunner Michael V. and Eli, who made a decadent risotto. This did not make her fellow chefs happy. Drama Alert: After already complaining about her inccessant talking in the kitchen, many of the contestants bemoaned Mattin's dismissal (and sported his red neckerchiefs in tribute) and complained about the fact that Robin was still there after serving up toxic shrimp last week.
