All customers of Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform can now watch live news content from CNN.
Max is now officially in the news streaming business. Warner Bros. Discovery has launched its new CNN Max content hub on Max, meaning subscribers of the Max with Ads, Max Ad-Free and Ultimate Max Ad-Free plans all get live news, breaking updates, and much more. Wbd first announced it was bringing live news from CNN to Max in August.
“We have the broadest and highest quality entertainment offering, and now will include world-leading news as a meaningful addition for all Max subscribers, at no extra charge,” Wbd’s head of streaming J.B. Perrette said. “CNN Max is differentiated by having 24/7 news at its core from CNN, the leading global news organization, and being available on a scaled streaming service in the U.S., which has a significantly younger and additive audience compared to traditional TV.

CNN ventured back into streaming on Wednesday with the launch of CNN Max, a service that diverges from its past efforts in the way that it mirrors so much of the schedule of the linear network.
Primetime shows like Erin Burnett OutFront, Anderson Cooper 360 and The Source With Kaitlan Collins, as well as morning programming including Early Start with Kasie Hunt and CNN This Morning are on the scheduled unveiled on Wednesday. Other shows come from CNN International, including State of the Race with Kasie Hunt, which is debuting on Wednesday as well, and One World, with Bianna Golodryga joining Zain Asher as anchor. Amanpour also is part of the early afternoon schedule.
The CNN hub also features original programming, including Jim Sciutto anchor CNN Newsroom, with Rahel Solomon, Jim Acosta, Amara Walker and Fredricka Whitfield also set to lead coverage during certain dayparts.

CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.
The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

You might call it CNN Headline News — for the streaming era.
Warner Bros. Discovery plans to unveil a 24/7 live-streamed news service called “CNN Max” on September 27, and indicated the outlet would focus initially on breaking news. Anchors including Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker, Fredricka Whitfield and Jim Sciutto have been given assignments, with Sciutto set to lead breaking news in the afternoons. Bianna Golodryga and Christiane Amanpour could also have roles, according to a person familiar with the situation.
CNN has fallen far behind its rivals when it comes to streaming, with Warner scuttling a nascent subscription-based streaming outlet, CNN+, last year. As the company recalibrated CNN’s strategy, however, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, ABC News and CBS News have all had opportunities to establish new programming for the broadband set, and to experiment while refining their brands in the space. CNN+ may not have worked, but perhaps CNN on Max will.
Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to launch new original programs from CNN that will stream on its Max streaming service, according to three people familiar with the matter. Jim Sciutto, Bianna Golodryga, Rahel Solomon and Christiane Amanpour are among the CNN journalists who have been tapped to take part in the effort, according to two of these people.
CNN and Max could make an announcement about the project as soon as Thursday, according to these people, and would likely provide greater detail. A spokeswoman for CNN declined to comment and a spokesman for Max declined to comment.
Warner Bros. Discovery scuttled the nascent CNN+ streaming service within days of taking over CNN’s corporate parent, once known as WarnerMedia, from AT&T in 2022. Now the company seems more eager to make CNN programming available to cord-cutters, perhaps realizing that the cable-news giant,...

Gayle King and Charles Barkley will help break traditional barriers around news programming later this year when they launch “King Charles,” a new weekly primetime program for CNN.
The duo confirmed the move, which has been anticipated for weeks, with an announcement Saturday afternoon on TNT, a cable network that is, like CNN, owned by Warner Bros, Discovery. “King Charles” will be a one-hour, live discussion program and is set to air Wednesdays. CBS News, which counts King as one of the most prominent members of its roster of correspondents, signed off on the deal weeks ago, according to a person familiar with matter. Barkley, who recently renewed his longstanding deal with Warner Bros. Discovery’s sports division, had an easier transition.
King vowed to host a show that offers “a good conversation without tearing other people down.” Barkley said the program would not try to emulate “clickbait” that journalism...

Liev Schreiber urged a crowd of D.C. lawmakers, ambassadors and media figures for continued support for Ukrainians as the one-year anniversary nears of Russia’s attempted invasion.
The occasion was UnSanctioned, an event at the French ambassador’s residence that brought together those who have been sanctioned by Vladimir Putin’s regime to support the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
The list, as Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova noted, is long. The sanctioned guests at the Friday evening event included Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, State Department Spokesman Ned Price, Rep. At about the same time that President Joe Biden was on the phone discussing Russia with China’s Xi Jinping, and as Russian troops pounded Ukrainian cities, Vladimir Putin gathered close to 200,000 Muscovites in a soccer stadium to put his spin on things.
It was billed as concert to mark the 8th anniversary of the referendum on Crimea’s so-called reunification with Russia, but it was also a chance for Putin to try and rally support for his war on Ukraine. But all did not go as planned.
Putin, standing on a stage with no one else near him, was about to wrap his speech when the TV feed jumped to a dolly shot swinging out over the crowd. Audio from Putin’s speech was suddenly replaced by music and cheering. You can see it below.

As Covid cases and hospitalizations continue to increase due to the Delta variant, Arnold Schwarzenegger is issuing a blunt message to his fellow Americans: “Screw your freedom” and wear a mask. The “Terminator” actor and former California governor appeared in a video discussion this week (via Insider) with CNN’s Bianna Golodryga and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman and stressed the importance of continued mask wearing.
“There is a virus here — it kills people,” Schwarzenegger said. “And the only way we prevent it is get vaccinated, get masks, to do social distancing, washing your hands all the time, and not just to think about ‘well my freedom is being kind of disturbed here.’ No, screw your freedom. Because with freedom comes obligations and responsibilities. You cannot just say, ‘I have the right to X, Y, and Z.’ When you affect other people then it gets serious.”
Schwarzenegger continued, “Yeah...

The network said that Burleson will continue as an analyst on The NFL Today. He joined CBS Sports in 2017.
Burleson’s new role was part of a new agreement with the network for the former NFL player. It also includes appearances on Nickelodeon, while he’ll have an expanded role on the NFL Network.

CNN chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour said that she has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
“I’ve had successful major surgery to remove it, and I am now going through several months of chemotherapy for the very best possible longterm prognosis, and I am confident,” she said on her CNN International show on Monday. She also said that she was fortunate to have health insurance through work and doctors treating her “in a country underpinned by of course the brilliant NHS,” a reference to the UK’s National Health Service.
“I am telling you this in the interest of transparency, but really as a shout out to most early diagnosis,” urging women to educate themselves on the disease and to get all the regular screenings and scans, and to “ensure that your legitimate medical concerns are not dismissed or diminished.”
Amanpour also hosts PBS’s nightly global affairs program, Amanpour & Company.

CNN primetime anchor Don Lemon cried on-air Tuesday night while discussing colleague Chris Cuomo’s coronavirus diagnosis.
Lemon, whose 10 p.m. Et “CNN Tonight” airs right after Cuomo’s 9 p.m. show, usually handles their handoff at the top of the hour with a little banter, found it hard to keep things lighthearted during a conversation with CNN senior global affairs analyst Bianna Golodryga about the effect of the pandemic on renters and homeowners.

Charlie Rose Acknowledges ‘Inappropriate’ Relationships, Flirting With ‘CBS This Morning’ Co-Anchors
Charlie Rose acknowledged that he had “inappropriate” workplace relationships and that he flirted with his “CBS This Morning” co-anchors Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell, according to a deposition that was unsealed on Monday.
In his testimony, which he gave back in November, Rose was asked about the apology he posted on Twitter back in 2017 when accusations of sexual misconduct against him began to surface. When asked about the “inappropriate behavior” he admitted to in his statement, Rose acknowledged in his testimony that he has since considered his “romantic” and “intimate” relationships to be “inappropriate” because “there was power and balance, and you were in some cases the boss and you had a relationship that was defined within the workplace.”
Rose said he was not referring to any specific woman or women he had those relationships with, but he did admit that he flirted with King, O’Donnell, as well as Bianna Golodryga and Chelsea Wei.

She would work as a co-anchor on “CBS This Morning” while maintaining a position she had already established as a contributor to CNN. CBS News plans to hurl a new anchor squad into TV’s morning-news wars Monday when a different trio – Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil – takes the helm at “CBS This Morning.” The A.M. effort that has won critical plaudits by focusing on harder news topics, like international affairs and business, and has given CBS new momentum in a daypart dominated by ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “Today” that it struggled in the past to conquer. But the show has ceded ground in recent months.
That doesn’t mean CBS is going to abandon the program’s newsier premise, says Diana Miller, its new executive producer. Viewers still won’t be seeing an abundance of cooking segments or summer concert series. “We are certainly not going to be doing less news,” she says. “In this day and age, there’s no shortage of it.

John Dickerson will fill in for a week on “CBS Evening News” after current anchor Jeff Glor steps down following this evening’s broadcast, CBS News President Susan Zirinsky told Variety in a brief interview.
Glor will leave “Evening News” after anchoring this evening’s show, and will be replaced by Norah O’Donnell sometime this summer. CBS News expects to use a rotating series of anchors to staff the broadcast until O’Donnell takes over, Zirinsky said.
CBS News announced earlier this week it would overhaul its weekday talent lineup, unveiling new teams for both “CBS This Morning” and “CBS Evening News.” Both programs have seen ratings slump in recent months following changes in their anchor lineups. At “Evening News,” Glor succeeded Scott Pelley and an interim stint by Anthony Mason. At “CBS This Morning,” executives brought John Dickerson and Bianna Golodryga to join Gayle King and O’Donnell...

King announced she will be joined by Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil on the ratings-starved program, revealing start date: May 20.

CBS News made headlines of its own Monday by unveiling anchor changes at two of its best known programs, a radical maneuver that underscores how its programs have fallen behind rivals at a time of heightened competition.
The network will overhaul both “CBS This Morning” and “CBS Evening News,” adding two new anchors, veteran Anthony Mason and rising broadcaster Tony Dokoupil, to host the morning program with Gayle King, who has been at the A.M. desk since 2012. Her co-anchor Norah O’Donnell, will take over the chair at “CBS Evening News” starting in the summer, before moving the broadcast to Washington, D.C. in the fall. A third “Morning” co-anchor, John Dickerson, will move to “60 Minutes.” Jeff Glor will step down from his role as evening-news anchor, and is in discussions with CBS about a potential new role. CBS News isn’t talking, because it wanted to made the announcement closer to its Upfront presentation in Manhattan the second week of May, but sources agreed with intel first appearing in King’s de facto newsletter, Page Six.

CBS This Morning has promoted Diana Miller, currently the morning show’s senior broadcast producer, as the new executive producer.
It’s the latest shakeup on CBS’ morning show, with Thursday’s news of Miller’s promotion coming a day after confirmation that co-host Bianna Golodryga will be exiting after her six-month stint. In the meantime, co-host Gayle King is close to signing a new multi-year deal with CBS News that will keep her the main anchor.
Meanwhile, current co-hosts Norah O’Donnell and John Dickerson have long been rumored for other possible gigs within CBS News, CBS Evening News, whose current anchor Jeff Glor had been under pressure amid ratings declines, and 60 Minutes, respectively.
CBS News said that Miller, who has been with the program since 2014, assumes full oversight of the show immediately and will report to division president Susan Zirinsky.
“Diana is exceptionally positioned for this role,” Zirinsky said.

Gayle King, Norah O’Donnell, John Dickerson and Bianna Golodryga have scored a notable string of scoops for “CBS This Morning” in recent weeks. Now executives at the network’s news division are considering something that would also make headlines — a new anchor lineup for the show.

CBS News is considering making significant changes to its flagship “CBS Evening News,” according to four people with knowledge of the talks, part of a top-down look at the news division by incoming president Susan Zirinsky.
Executives are considering putting “CBS This Morning” anchor Norah O’Donnell in the lead role of its evening-news broadcast, these people said, as well as moving the broadcast to Washington, D.C. instead of its longtime roost in New York City. CBS News declined to make executives available for comment. These plans are not definitive, these people cautioned, and there is no guarantee they will come to fruition. Anchors on “CBS This Morning” became the first CBS News employees to take to the network’s own air to discuss the naming of Susan Zirinsky as the new president of CBS News.
The four anchors – Gayle King, Norah O’Donnell, John Dickerson and Bianna Golodryga – unsurprisingly praised their new chief, but also shed some light on to some of the tension that has simmered at CBS News in recent months. Since Charlie Rose was ousted from the CBS morning program in late 2017,CBS News has been under scrutiny due to a series of allegations being raised about harassment being tolerated at the news unit. As those claims became public, CBS News’ flagship programs have suffered in the ratings.

At MSNBC, Rachel Maddow, Brian Williams, Nicolle Wallace and Chris Matthews were anchoring a different broadcast – one that would go on through the night, with Willie Geist taking the reins at 2 a.m. And earlier in the evening, Stephanie Ruhle had worked to jump-start a new broadband service, NBC News Signal, with an election preview.
“I do think there’s a real swirl around this election,” said Lack, perched behind a row of producers and top NBC News...

It’s election day, and you know what that means — tons of coverage from every major news network. And, yes, that includes CBS, which will have a three-hour CBS News midterm election special and plenty of additional coverage on the free CBS News streaming service.
On TV, CBS News’ coverage will start at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt and be led by “CBS This Morning” anchors Norah O’Donnell, Gayle King, John Dickerson and Bianna Golodryga, along with “CBS Evening News” anchor Jeff Glor.
That broadcast you can find on television, as well as streaming through the CBS All Access service. You don’t need a cable login for that, but it does cost $5.99 a month for the subscription. However, if you’ve never used All Access before you can get a free seven-day trial here.

Three of the broadcast networks — ABC, CBS and NBC — are ditching their primetime lineups tonight to offer live coverage of the midterm election.
This is kind of wall-to-wall coverage the networks usually reserve for the race for the White House. But the 2018 election cycle has attracted intense interest among voters and pundits who see the election as a referendum on Donald Trump’s presidency.
Democrats are hoping for a “blue wave” of angry voters to wash over the ballot boxes, and sweep the party into control of the House of Representatives. The Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings, and Trump’s recent attacks on the Central American migrants walking to the U.S. border, appear to have activated the Gop’s base.
All of that electoral drama is bound to boost viewership, and justifies pre-empting The Connors on ABC,...

Marc Burstein has been covering elections since 1998. Now the ABC News executive is gearing up for what he believes will be an event of seismic proportions.
The 2018 midterm elections on Nov. 6 were always going to be contentious, says Burstein, ABC News senior executive producer of special events, but in the wake of the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Republican and Democratic voters are energized in ways that no one had previously anticipated.
“I think this is absolutely the biggest midterm election in my time — and maybe a generation,” says Burstein. “We are treating this as if it were a presidential election.”
There’s good reason to pull out all the stops. Viewership is likely to be intense, just as it was for the news networks’ coverage of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s September hearing of testimony from then-Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the...

Joanna Coles, who recently left Hearst Magazine, is joining “CBS This Morning” as a creative advisor.
Coles departed Hearst in August after 12 years with the company, where she served as chief creative officer. Her role will be part-time.
“Initially, Joanna will be engaged with the ‘CBS This Morning’ team and will weigh in on other strategic opportunities. We love the journalism that ‘Ctm’ is doing, we believe in the people doing it–and we want Joanna’s perspective and experience to help us engage new audiences everywhere around that work,” CBS News president David Rhodes told staffers in a memo, which was obtained by TheWrap. “She also brings a sharp sense of humor and a habitual viewer’s perspective to our daily experience of news coverage in this extraordinary climate.”

Joanna Coles, the veteran magazine editor and former chief content officer of Hearst Magazines, is coming aboard “CBS This Morning” as a creative adviser.
CBS News President David Rhodes announced the news to staffers Thursday. Coles’ role will be part time.
“Initially, Joanna will be engaged with the CBS This Morning team and will weigh in on other strategic opportunities. We love the journalism that Ctm is doing, we believe in the people doing it—and we want Joanna’s perspective and experience to help us engage new audiences everywhere around that work,” Rhodes told staffers in a memo.
Coles joins as “CBS This Morning” has hit a plateau in the ratings. While the show has been a success at CBS, which had not been able to mount a competitive morning-news program for years, it has – like rivals “Today” and “Good Morning America” – suffered ratings shortfalls in the most recent TV season.

Bianna Golodryga has filled in at the desk of “CBS This Morning” so many times in recent months that when she recently woke up and saw the show on TV, she feared she had overslept. “Had I slept in?” she asked. “It has felt so natural to be there.”
No more questions about alarm-clock settings. Golodryga was named the show’s fourth co-anchor this week – just the latest in a recent parade of tweaks to the nation’s big morning programs. Once a place where the same hosts would greet viewers each day ad infinitum –Joan Lunden held forth on ABC’s “Good Morning America” for 17 years – A.M. news shows in this era make changes nearly every few months.
At a time when consumers are just as happy to reach for their smartphone for news as they are for the TV remote, the shows can’t afford to stand pat.

“CBS This Morning” co-host John Dickerson covers the news at the crack of dawn every morning, and yet, he still made time to discuss headlines late Wednesday evening.
“It’s past my bedtime, of course,” Dickerson, who wakes up at 4 a.m. during the week, quipped at Variety‘s annual New York party, where he was one of 50 honorees to make this year’s New Power of New York list, out in this week’s issue.
Dickerson said the early wake-up call is hardly the hardest part of his job, given the 24/7 news cycle, especially during Donald Trump’s presidency.
“The news cycle comes at you like a freight train,” Dickerson said, speaking to Variety at the Wednesday night event, held at Atlantic Grill in Midtown Manhattan. “And then you have to decide what to do with it and what are we missing that’s important that’s getting missed by the insanity in Washington,...
