Longest Third Date is a Netflix documentary directed by Brent Hodge.
Have you ever met someone through an internet app? Longest Third Date is a documentary about this phenomenon, focusing on two people who meet through a dating app, fall in love, go on some fantastic dates and… yes, love happens.
Well, and they get stuck on an island because of the Coronavirus.
It’s not life-changing, nor does it tell anything new. It’s not Indian Predator, don’t worry, no one is going to end up torn to shreds. Longest Third Date is a simple documentary, a reality show about life that gives us a little piece of reality about this strange, nice and very odd world in which, sometimes, two people find love.
Especially when on a third date they invite you on a classy exotic trip!
Enjoy.

1091 Pictures has acquired “Pharma Bro,” a film that looks at the rise and fall of convicted pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
Shkreli was convicted in 2017 on three counts of securities fraud related to two hedge funds and the drug company he ran, Retrophin. Prosecutors claimed Shkreli had defrauded investors in two hedge funds and used the biotech company’s funds to repay them.
The film directed by Brent Hodge will feature interviews with Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, as well as influencer Billy the Fridge, journalist Christie Smythe (a former journalist who ditched her former life for Shrekli) and Shkreli’s attorney Ben Brafman. Blumhouse Television produced alongside Hodgee Films.

1091 Pictures has acquired “Pharma Bro,” a look at the rise and fall of Martin Shkreli, the pharmaceutical tycoon whose price hiking of drugs made him a textbook example of avarice run amok. The film by Brent Hodge links Shkreli’s story to the 21st century prominence of bro culture. It contains interviews with Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah; online influencer, musical artist and friend of Shkreli, Billy the Fridge; journalist Christie Smythe who upended her life for Shkreli; and Shkreli’s attorney Ben Brafman, among others. The film was produced by Blumhouse Television and Hodgee Films. 1091 Pictures will release the film digitally starting on Oct. 5.

Organizers of Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival, which champions inclusion in all forms of media, will be produced as an annual program by the nascent Arkansas nonprofit BFFoundation. Independent film producer Kristin Mann is set as head of content.
The mission of the organization, which was founded in December and has set up offices in Bentonville, Ar, is to promote underrepresented voices of diverse storytellers. It aims to amplify those who identify as female, non-binary, Lgbtqia+, Bipoc and people with disabilities in entertainment and media.
“Our organization remains dedicated to championing the inclusion of underrepresented storytellers and content creators across the industry,” Davis said in making the announcement this week. “We will continue to champion change by supporting work that reflects gender and racial equity on both sides of the camera — that allows for authentic representation of all forms of relationships and sexual orientations, and amplifies the voices of females,...

Quibi – allegedly pronounced “kwibby” – is the latest service to enter the streaming game, and its strategy is unique. The streamer’s mobile-only content is designed to be consumed in small chunks, or “quick bites,” but unlike its competitors such as YouTube, the shows on Quibi have big name stars and production values similar to what you’d find on a major network. Creators Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman are betting that in our modern society of short attention spans there is an audience for well-crafted entertainment that can be watched quickly while on the go. Interested in giving it a try? We’ve got a list of Quibi shows that we’re most excited about.

At 23 years old, Jasiel Correia became the youngest person ever to be elected mayor of Fall River, Massachusetts — and likely one of the youngest mayors anywhere ever — in 2015. He flourished, and was elected again in November 2017, but soon found himself in hot water after arrests on fraud and extortion charges, including allegedly using his own funds to defraud investors and extorting vendors. Correia ran again in November 2019, and though he lost, he still reportedly came in third place. The drama is depicted in the new Quibi series “Run This City,” and IndieWire has the exclusive first trailer, below.
“Run This City” is executive produced by Oscar nominee Mark Wahlberg and directed by award-winning Canadian filmmaker Brent Hodge, “Run This Town” follows Jasiel Correia as he navigates the role of newbie mayor, and the FBI indicts his former company while he fights the charges. “Who Let The Dogs Out,” the turn-of-the-millennium-era Grammy-winning Baha Men hit, has eclipsed kitsch to become a stadium anthem. And thanks to its peculiar origin story — the hook dates back to 1959 and the song’s ownership is a copyright maze — it’s now the subject of a documentary film, which held its world premiere at SXSW over the weekend.

Freaks and Geeks holds a special place in the hearts of viewers, TV critics and of course the cast and crew. The short-lived high school-set NBC series from Paul Feig ran for just 18 episodes from 1999-2000, but it remains a favorite of many—including the stars it helped launch, like Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jason Segel. A&E is taking viewers behind the scenes of the beloved series with Freaks and Geeks: The Documentary as part of the Biography limited series Cultureshock. In the doc, direct Brent Hodge sat down with Feig, Judd Apatow, Rogen, Segel, Linda Caredllini, Busy Philipps and most of primary cast to discuss their time on the show and how it impacted them. Last year, Tribeca was one of the first places to bring “The Handmaid’s Tale” to the TV world. Time will tell what the biggest story out of the 2018 festival will be, but there’s plenty to look forward to.
Tribeca unveiled a mammoth 2018 TV program, covering established series with network homes, all the way to pilots that have yet to be distributed. Some of the for-sure big stops in this year’s Tribeca guide: a screening of the “Westworld” Season 2 premiere, the first look at the upcoming Pablo Picasso season of “Genius,” and the debut North American look at Amazon’s TV adaptation of “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” starring Natalie Dormer.
Also in the mix out in New York next month? Surprise new episodes of “The Staircase,” the legendary French godfather of true crime TV. Netflix will also make their presence felt with a preview of their new Bobby...

If you don’t know who the Pistol Shrimps are, you’re going to want to very soon.
Brent Hodge’s new documentary “The Pistol Shrimps” follows the eponymous all-women recreational basketball team, led by players like Aubrey Plaza, model/actress Melissa Stetten, comedian Molly Hawkey (who you may know as “‘The Bachelor’s oldest-ever contestant”) and many other incredible players just might be one of the funnest and funniest films of the year. During the film’s Los Angeles premiere, the laughs never slowed, but it also became apparent that this documentary isn’t about basketball. It’s about what basketball means and can do for these women as individuals and as a group of friends, empowering them, inspiring them, encouraging them and much more.
After screening Wednesday night at The Theatre at Ace Hotel, the Shrimps, their coaches, their announcers and director Hodge sat down for a Q&A. Like their team name implies — and they would suggest to look up what a pistol shrimp is — each woman’s personality popped like the crack of a pistol shrimp claw. They laughed at many of the high jinks that unfolded the season depicted in the doc, but also got real about how, no matter the small scale, the team is vastly important to them. That’s something that’s also evident in the documentary, as the film makes sure to highlight many of the team members, their personalities and how the team affects their lives.

The team itself came together in a rather interesting way. According to the film, it was a bit tough to get the league together, as there wasn’t really a league at all before they came along. In the Q&A, Shrimp Amanda Lund explained how the struggles of making a web series sparked the idea in the first place. “I remember the moment when Maria [Blasucci] realized she needed to start a sports team. We had made this web series ‘Ghost Ghirls’ that no one was watching. So we made our own flyers and started flyering in the streets, saying, ‘You got ghosts? Watch this web series.’ So we were handing out these flyers and Maria was like, ‘This is so fun being out and doing an activity.’ And then she was like, ‘I’m going to start a sports team.’”
But why basketball? Recounting a rather momentous and crazy achievement in her early life, Shrimp founder Blasucci said, “I used to play in grade school and one time, I was dribbling the ball in the park league on the Pacific Palisades Sparks and I lost my shoe at halfcourt as I was dribbling the ball. And I went to shoot the basket and I made it, but my shoe was still at halfcourt. It was a real whirlwind.”
Unfortunately, the ragtag group didn’t start off with success, with only a few members ever having played the sport, let alone in an organized way, and others not entirely knowing how the sport works. Originally, they came together with a shared sense of trash talking and putting down their haters to offset this lack of success. But during the documented season, the Shrimps went on to win the championship.
This did, however, come at a cost to their original skills. One of the Shrimps said, “I think it goes to the root of self confidence and when you don’t have a lot of self confidence, it’s very easy to talk trash. So when we finally got the skills, the trash talking went away. It’s like when you don’t dress for the job you have, you dress for the job you want and so we talked trash when we couldn’t play basketball.”

After seeing the original trash talking chemistry, filmmaker Hodge knew he had to make a movie about them, telling the crowd, “One of my friends went to the games and he was like, ‘Dude, this whole thing’s a film. There’s a coach with a unicorn costume on, you’ve got to film this.’ And then we just started filming.”
He even theorized that the crew is why they won, explaining that “this is the only season you guys have won, so we’re like your lucky charm. And I don’t think we would’ve had a film unless they won.” Shrimp Molly Hawkey pleaded, “I was wondering if you could come out to the rest of our seasons because we didn’t do so well this season.” This past season, the Shrimps won only three games and lost seven.
But it wasn’t always easy for Shrimps. There were a lot of antics and even drama between teams during the season, exemplified in the documentary when Aubrey Plaza tore her Acl playing undercover in a second game on her sister’s team. The recovery, which Plaza described as taking “a couple steps forward, a bunch of steps backwards and I’m trying to just get forward again,” and the taste of the other team led her to test the market.
“I’m going to be playing for the Spice Squirrels in the fall. After my injury, I had a lot of time off and I just decided to test free agency,” she said. “I had to make the best choice for my family and my basketball career. And I just felt like the Spice Squirrels have a lot to offer me.”
Toward the end of the Q&A, founder Blasucci touched on an empowering point about the team, an aspect that was the documentary’s most lasting impression.
“I went to an all girls high school and I learned that girls can be the best of friends if they allow themselves to kind of let go of all the claw,” she said. “You know, ‘Ah, I need to get ahead of you!’ If you could just let that go, you can have such deep relationships with girls and I feel that with all of you girls and I, at no point, ever feel jealous or envious or anything. I just feel 100% support and I feel grateful and it’s wonderful. I suggest any girl out there that doesn’t have a tight group of girlfriends to really search for that, because as hard as it may be, you find these people that are so important to you and I feel that with all of these girls and I’m really grateful.”

While she’ll be seen in comedies both on the indie and studio side this summer (Joshy and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, respectively), Aubrey Plaza will also be featured in a documentary. The Pistol Shrimps follows her all-female basketball team, also made up of Melissa Stern, Maria Blasucci, and more, as they compete in last year’s recreational season. Coming from producer Morgan Spurlock and director Brent Hodge (I Am Chris Farley, A Brony Tale), the first trailers have landed ahead of a release this week.
We said in our review, “As far as sports documentaries about female friendships, there are too few and Pistol Shrimps, as enjoyable as it is, really is exactly what it is — like the league and the podcast it’s something to do. Surely one’s free time can be better spent elsewhere screening a film that’s more profound, but that is not what this is, the same way this rec league is not the Wnba.”
Check out the trailers and poster below.
“The Pistol Shrimps” is the fun new documentary following the 2015 season of the popular all female basketball team called The Pistol Shrimps – made up of actors, comedians and models in La. Comic actress Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), model Melissa Stern and actress/writer Maria Blasucci (Ghost Ghirls) are part of the ragtag team of trash-talking, hard fouling, wisecracking women who bring a much-needed edge to the game. Off the court, these women are also making it happen as writers, musicians, actors, comedians, moms and wives, who always have time on Tuesday nights for their games. The Pistol Shrimps are truly fearless women who are both ballers on and off the court.
The Pistol Shrimps arrives on SeeSo on June 16th.

Returning to the form of feature-length documentary to chronicle a subculture and the people that take pleasure in it, Brent Hodge’s third feature The Pistol Shrimps follows a recreational basketball team with a starting line-up that includes comediennes Aubrey Plaza and Molly Hawkey. The Shrimps, started as an impromptu team, inspired the league to grow into something somewhat serious — the team is even required to hold practices now. Oddly the team and the league inspire a podcast (Pistol Shrimp Radio) hosted by Matt Gourley and Mark McConville mixing alt comedy, geeky fandom and sports talk radio as the men become experts on all things Pistol Shrimps. This of course requires more energy, dedication and mental bandwidth than most men would have and, although they’re not the focus, their passion is reminiscent of the men that love My Little Pony, the subject of Hodge’s first feature A Brony Tale.

Chris Farley was a particular brand of comedian, a performer known for being big, loud, over the top and utterly fearless, willing to risk life and limb for the good of the bit. His rise to fame was meteoric: from Second City to "Saturday Night Live" to movie stardom in half the time it takes most others. In many ways, his life paralleled his career; rarely did Farley turn off his manic energy, and when he wasn’t going big on the stage, he was going big at a party, battling his addiction to food, alcohol, and several other substances. The new Spike TV documentary “I Am Chris Farley” aims to parse out the bottled lightning of Farley’s performances, but in paying tribute to his successes the film fails to recognize the man beneath the myth. Armed with interviews from a cadre of comedy legends and all the archive footage they could want,...

The fall festival rush is upon us. Locarno is currently ramping up. Venice has released their line-up and Thom Powers and the Toronto International Film Festival team have dropped a bomb with a previously unannounced new feature from powerhouse docu-provocateur Michael Moore. It is truly a miracle that the production of a film such as Moore’s upcoming Where To Invade Next (see still above) managed to go completely undetected by the filmmaking community until it was literally announced to world premiere at one of the largest film festivals in the world. Programmed as a one of the key films in the Special Presentations section at Tiff, the film sees Moore telling “the Pentagon to ‘stand down’ — he will do the invading for America from now on.” Also announced to premiere at Tiff was Avi Lewis’ This Changes Everything, which has slowly been rising up this list, as well as...

Audio of Chris Farley voicing Shrek, the titular ogre from the DreamWorks animated franchise, has surfaced on YouTube. The uploader, user "Bedhead Bernie," attributes its origins to John Garbett, a producer who briefly worked on the film.
The clip arrived not long after Farley's brother, Kevin, told Yahoo! that the comedian had recorded almost all of his dialogue for Shrek prior to his death from a drug overdose in 1997. "Originally, the Shrek character was a little bit more like Chris, like a humble, bumbling innocent guy," Kevin said.

Making a documentary isn’t easy. Sure, they’re based on real stories that have already been told, but documentaries comes to life through a proper balance of investigative due diligence and engaging emotionality. For example – Asif Kapadia’s Amy succeeds not only because it chronicles the rise and fall of a poor, wayward musician, but because it’s an emotional powerhouse that never shies away from Winehouse’s dark, unsettling past. Kapadia connects the dots, exposes tragedy, and drags our emotions through Hell along the way.
Much like Winehouse, Chris Farley’s gargantuan talents left this world far too soon thanks to the perils of substance abuse. His story is one of humble beginnings, skyrocketing success, and excessive partying, making me think I Am Chris Farley could be on par with Amy‘s tumultuous ride. Spoiler Alter: it’s not. But that’s not a bad thing! Brent Hodge...

Canada, 2015
For those who came of age in the ‘90s, Chris Farley is the closest thing to John Belushi that they will ever experience. He was a live wire; an entertainment phenomenon that exploded and flamed out before our very eyes. Brent Hodge and Derik Murray’s new documentary, I Am Chris Farley, tries to illuminate his meteoric rise and fall, as well as to understand his delicate psyche. Mostly, it’s another chance to re-live some of Farley’s best bits, which is just enough to recommend this otherwise disappointing chat-fest.
Chris Farley was born craving the spotlight. Friends and family recount tales of a young Wisconsinite who was determined to entertain everyone around him. Photos and archival footage of his early performances reveal a fearless artist who was willing to do anything to make people laugh,...

"The fatty falls down and everyone goes home happy!" jokes Chris Farley with a hint of sincere embarrassment, on The Late Show with David Letterman. This was true. No other Saturday Night Live (SNL) alum of that era - Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Rob Schneider - made me roll on the floor with laughter like Chris Farley. It was his childlike innocence, manic energy and great physical abandon that made him so magical. His drug overdose in 1997 came as no surprise to many, as the rumors of his drug and sex fueled escapades were widely publicized. It’s been a surprisingly interesting month of moving and shaking in terms of doc development. Just a month after making his first public funding pitch at Toronto’s Hot Docs Forum, legendary doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman took to Kickstarter to help cover the remaining expenses for his 40th feature film In Jackson Heights (see the film’s first trailer below). Unrelentingly rigorous in his determination to capture the American institutional landscape on film, his latest continues down this thematic rabbit hole, taking on the immensely diverse New York City neighborhood of Jackson Heights as his latest subject. According to the Kickstarter page, Wiseman is currently editing the 120 hours of rushes he shot with hopes of having the film ready for a fall festival premiere (my guess would be Tiff, where both National Gallery and At Berkeley made their North American debut), though he’s currently quite a ways away from his $75,000 goal.

Bronies unite: there's a new My Little Pony film on the way...

I remember a kid in my old neighborhood who owned a Ken doll. Ken, you may remember, was the sexually ambiguous boyfriend of the infinitely more famous Barbie. If that wasn’t weird enough, this kid kept his Ken doll in a state of near nudity, stripping off his safari gear until poor Ken was down to a pair of bright red swimming trunks. The kid would walk around the neighborhood with his near naked Ken doll tucked under his arm, and occasionally visit my yard, where I and my Neanderthal pals were having fun with our far more manly “action figures,” which included the likes of GI Joe, and Stretch Armstrong. Ken wasn’t a natural fit – he was too small, his hair too perfect, and he was always smiling. The kid claimed that if you left Ken in the sun for a while, he’d actually get a tan.

Hodgee Films has released a heartwarming trailer for its upcoming documentary "A Brony Tale," which will be playing at Tribeca this Saturday. Focused on a unique subsection of the fandom for the "My Little Pony" animated series, made up of mostly straight males, who refer to themselves as "bronies," the film follows voice actor Ashleigh Bell, who provides the voice for two of the ponies on the show, as she travels to BronyCon to meet with these fans for the first time. The film is directed by Brent Hodge and executive produced by Morgan Spurlock. The trailer is quick to address the issue on everyone's mind -- that of the seemingly perverted origins of the "brony" fandom. In a clip at the beginning of the trailer Bell remarks, "The pervert alarm, for sure, went off in my head when I first heard about it." As the trailer proceeds, however, it...

The Tribeca Film Festival began as a way for New York to rebuild culturally after the World Trade Center attacks in 2001. For the first time since then, the area around Ground Zero is dominated by a sparkly, newly finished Freedom Tower, which represents so much more than the city’s resilience and recovery. The Tribeca festival played a small, but not insignificant, role in that recovery, inviting artists and film lovers to the city and reassuring New Yorkers that life can be beautiful even in the darkest of days.
