Redbox, whose core business remains renting DVDs from kiosks across the U.S., is upsizing its ambitions in the original movie biz as well as expanding its free, ad-supported streaming platforms in a deal with Lionsgate.
Under a multiyear distribution pact, Lionsgate will handle distribution of Redbox Entertainment titles across home entertainment windows and lead licensing efforts of the films to subscription-streaming services. Redbox says it expects to release 36 original movies per year. Originally, Redbox’s strategy was to distribute the films through its owned-and-operated channels but it’s now looking for wider distribution.
In addition, Redbox entered into a licensing for films and TV shows from Lionsgate’s 17,000-title library for Redbox‘s ad-supported AVOD and free ad-supported television (Fast) services.
Recently released Redbox Entertainment films include “Capone” starring Tom Hardy, “Shadow in the Cloud” starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Nick Robinson, and “Sas: Red Notice” starring Sam Heughan and Ruby Rose.

Formed in 2019, the entertainment division of the longtime operator of DVD kiosks is an important part of the company’s expansion plan. It is acquiring, producing and releasing a range of genre films, with plans to reach 36 releases a year. It relies on data from nearly 20 years of movie transactions since the company’s emergence to inform its buildout.
Lionsgate will take Redbox films out in home entertainment windows as well as subscription video on demand licensing for select titles.

Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Jackson Sequel ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ Moves Earlier In The Summer
After Disney plopped its Ryan Reynolds action comedy Free Guy from 20th Century Studios on August 13, a week before Lionsgate’s sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard which also stars Reynolds, it stood to reason the latter would move. The new date for the Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson sequel, which also stars Salma Hayek, is June 16.
The announcement was made Monday by Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate’s president of worldwide distribution. The sequel, on its new date, arrives the weekend after Warner Bros/HBO Max’s feature musical In the Heights, and the weekend prior to Universal’s F9 on June 25. Also opening the weekend of June 16-18 is Focus Features’ Edgar Wright-directed feature documentary The Sparks Brothers.
Schwartz said, “This is the kind of summer action film that delivers even more comedy and more thrilling action than the first film – and it’s perfect for fans new to the franchise as well.

Exclusive: Who says the home entertainment sector is dead? Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum has sold over 3 million units in packaged media, electronic sales and VOD since its arrival in the post-theatrical window in late August, becoming Lionsgate’s highest-grossing home entertainment title in five years, since 2014’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.
Among all of the mini-major’s electronic sell-through titles, John Wick Chapter 3 is the biggest ever, surpassing John Wick Part 2 in its first three days of Est release. Chapter 3 became available on DVD/Blu-Ray on September 10.
While the first John Wick didn’t really raise eyebrows at the global box office grossing close to $89M worldwide, Lionsgate saw the potential for a franchise given that pic’s boom in the home entertainment market. John Wick: Chapter Two validated Lionsgate’s expectations, making $171.5M worldwide, $92M domestic. It did even better with Chapter 3, which made $171M domestic,...

Following on from Rob Zombie’s tantalizing social media countdown, the first 3 From Hell trailer finally arrived last month and though it did give us our best look yet at the upcoming sequel to 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects, it really didn’t reveal very much.
Coming in at just under a minute in length, it offered up a tantalizing tease of the chaos to come but crucially, didn’t provide us with any plot details or even a firm release date. We’ve been told though that the pic would be hitting theaters this fall and now, at long last, we know exactly when to expect it.
Zombie and Lionsgate have announced today that 3 From Hell will be with us on September 16th, but there’s a catch. You see, it’ll only be playing in 900 select theaters and will run for three nights only – September 16th, 17th and 18th.
