A guitar used by John Lennon has sold for $2,857,500, setting a new record for the highest-selling guitar at auction in the Beatles’ history.
The Framus 12-string Hootenanny acoustic guitar, used in the recording of the Beatles’ 1965 Help! album and film, was bought through a telephone bid as part of a two-day music icons sale by Julien’s Auctions. The guitar had an estimated price of $600,000 to $800,000, but was expected to fetch far more. It surpassed the $2.4 million price tag of Lennon’s Gibson J160E, which sold in 2015.

That’s a paraphrase of a Jeff Goldblum line from the original Jurassic Park, as his Malcolm lectures Sir Richard Attenborough’s John Hammond on the ethics of spawning dinosaurs in a modern world. But it’s an apt statement that unfortunately applies to too many scenarios in these times — the latest having, rightfully, sparked the fury of costume conservationists, fashion aficionados and classic-film fans alike. And most of the parties involved have ceased talking about it.

With the new Nft (non-fungible token) market fetching multimillions of dollars for digital art assets including jpegs, videoclips and even tweets — like $2.8 million for Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s first tweet — it comes as no surprise that Hollywood is jumping on the bandwagon in a feverish quest to add another revenue stream for its intellectual property. Beverly Hills-based UTA is among the first Hollywood agencies to establish a dedicated Nft department, exploring multiple ways in which the digital tokens might benefit its clients. “We have just scratched the surface in terms of how NFTs will disrupt the marketplace,” Lesley Silverman, UTA’s executive for digital assets, told TheWrap. “The notion of allowing fans to own a piece of a creative project, and to be able to trade that interest in a free and open marketplace, is an entirely novel premise relative to traditional entertainment.” Even auctioneers in the traditional collectible market are getting involved.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is suing to block a Beverly Hills auction house from selling Valerie Harper’s four Emmy statuettes because the sale this week would tarnish the award, according to a complaint filed in Los Angeles federal court.
The Emmy awards that Harper received for playing Rhoda Morgenstern on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda are estimated at $5,000 to $7,000 each on the Julien’s Auctions website, where they are set to be sold Friday and Saturday. The TV Academy says if the sale is allowed to proceed it will undermine the prestige of the award.
The actress died in August at age 80.
The Television Academy also claims the trophies are not the property of Harper’s estate because the awards are loans, not gifts.
Darren Julien, president and chief executive officer of the auction house, said the lawsuit was “meritless” and Julien’s would oppose it in court.

Truly historical objects are often palimpsests: repainted, refinished, refurbished — if you were to peel back the layers like the rings of a tree, that object’s history would be revealed.
The same goes for Prince’s second 1984 Cloud guitar: beginning its life as an entirely different instrument — the castoff from a defunct company — it has been nearly every color on the spectrum. White, peach, light blue, yellow and, finally, electric blue. The instrument — nicknamed the Blue Angel — is now set to hit the auction block next month as part of...

The world’s most expensive cardigan is locked in a gun safe in rural Pennsylvania. It has a mysterious stain in one of its pockets — “some kind of brown, crunchy something in there,” according to the sweater’s owner, which he guesses could be chocolate, or vomit. Bill Pagel knows what you’re thinking, so he’ll say it for you. Last month, the Hibbing, Minnesota resident bought the two-story house where Bob Dylan lived between 1948 and 1959. It follows his 2001 purchase of a dwelling in Duluth where the singer and his family lived before Hibbing. “When you start collecting homes – and I’ve got two – I think that’s when you should probably get some professional help,” Pagel says with a self-deprecating laugh. “That’s end-stage collecting.”
