Papa John’s is serving up apologies after their recent controversy.
Two weeks after CEO John Schnatter blamed the NFL leadership’s handling of the ongoing national anthem protests for its lagging sales, the popular pizza chain took to twitter to backtrack those comments.
The company, which is an official sponsor of the NFL, reversed its position in a three-part public statement, now claiming they support the “players’ movement.” “The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive. That definitely was not our intention,...

Desert Cathedral
Director: Travis Gutiérrez Senger
Writer(s): Travis Gutiérrez Senger
Producers: Lincoln Leopard’s Senger and Michael J. Mouncer with Chip Hourihan
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Lee Tergesen, Chaske Spencer, Russell Hodgkinson
Equipped with a behind the scenes team of film composers Saunder Juriaans and Daniel Bensi (The One I Love) and film editor Marc Vives (Ping Pong Summer), it’s the approach and the biographical narrative treatment in Travis Gutiérrez Senger’s Desert Cathedral that has got me hyper curious. Employing a narrative hybrid model (found footage and archival materials) and what I’m guessing will be a fractured timeline, means creatively, we might be looking at a truly rich investigative experience.
Gist: Based on a true story and starring Lee Tergesen as the real life Peter Collins, this about a real estate developer who mysteriously disappears into the Southwestern desert in 1992, leaving behind a series of VHS tapes.

Compared with other first time filmmaker peers, Travis Gutiérrez Senger’s feature debut appears to have benefited from an abundance of post prod time, when admittedly, the helmer unearthed more info on his subject which meant he added another creative coat of paint. Senger who got his start in the docu format and retains the true story aspect in his 2014 offering, got a taste for the film fest circuit with White Lines and the Fever – a documentary short that won big with the Special Jury Prize at SXSW and the Grand Jury Prize at Tribeca in 2010. Shot in Seattle, Washington in late 2011, Desert Cathedral was a featured project in the Us in Progress Paris edition 2012 (which included Hannah Fidell’s A Teacher) and will surely benefit from tech folk presence of the excellent composer team of Saunder Juriaans and Daniel Bensi (Martha Marcy May Marlene) and film editor Marc Vives...

Michael Bay ‘Pain & Gain’ box office: Bay’s first non-Transformers movie to fail to crack $20m domestic this weekend? This Pain & Gain box-office post is a fully updated version of my previous Pain & Gain box-office article. According to Deadline.com, Pain & Gain grossed a disappointing $7m on Friday, including $750,000 from Thursday late-night showings. That’s down from an expected $9m early in the day and $8m early in the evening. Barring a major Saturday surge — which is highly unlikely at this stage — Pain & Gain will end up with about $18-19.5m at 3,277 North American venues by Sunday evening. Afternoon estimates had the Michael Bay-directed movie grossing as much as $26m, later downsized to a more modest $21m — and now, quite likely, less than $20m. (Photo: Michael Bay on the Pain & Gain set.) Now, Paramount was purportedly expecting Michael Bay’s first non-Transformers, non-Shia Labeouf movie in...

‘Pain & Gain’ box office: Michael Bay’s less-than-atrocious effort to open either modestly or strongly, depending on your context of choice (photo: Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson in ‘Pain & Gain’) Starring Ted and The Fighter‘s Mark Wahlberg and G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Fast Five‘s Dwayne Johnson, and directed by Michael Bay — he of the big, loud, dumb, and immensely successful Transformers movies — Pain & Gain is expected to open with less than $25m at 3,277 North American locations. In fact, Bay’s mix of crime thriller and "offbeat" humor, which had some critics groaning (47% approval rating and 5.7/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes‘ top critics), should not end the weekend much above the $20m mark if early, rough Friday estimates are accurate. According to Deadline.com, barring a major evening surge Pain & Gain likely collected $8m on Friday, including $750,000 from Thursday night screenings. Barring a major Saturday surge — not all that likely...

"Coriolanus" producer Julia Taylor-Stanley and "Senna" writer Manish Pandey are teaming for a $60 million drama about the Ferrari racing team at Artemis Films says Screen Daily.
The story will concentrate on famed drivers Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins along with the racing brand’s history in the late 1950s and early 1960s which is described as a "very tragic period". A love triangle element is also being incorporated.
Taylor-Stanley says that the project is moving very fast and they are "already talking to an A-list director and have some financing committed". The project is being set up as a UK-Italy co-production with shooting to take place in both countries.

Well this is a some flipping good news! I’m pretty sure that the makers of Senna (that would be writer – Manish Pandey, Director – Asif Kapadia & Producers Tim Bevan, Liza Chasi, Eric Fellner and James Gay-Rees) had no idea whatsoever that the movie they have created would become such a massive hit picking up award after award wherever they go.
I still believe that Senna is the best film that I’ve seen all year and am so desperate to get the Blu-ray copy through in the post! I’m hoping tomorrow may be the day! For those of you not in the know, Senna is a documentary based around the life of Formula One three time world champion racing driver, Ayrton Senna. The movie will make you laugh, cry and you’ll watch in disbelief as the movie unfolds but I’ll leave the rest of my DVD review...

After working on what’s apparently one of the best documentaries of the year, Senna, writer Manish Pandey is sticking to territory he seems to know, with ScreenDaily (via ThePlaylist) telling us that he’s collaborating with Coriolanus producer Julia Taylor-Stanley on a narrative drama about a Ferrari F1 team.
But not just any Ferrari F1 team! No, this will tell the true story of “famed drivers Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins and the racing brand’s history in the late 1950s and early 1960s,” which the producer calls “a very tragic period in Ferrari’s history.” If that weren’t enough, a love triangle will also come into play; it would appear that they’re also racing for a woman’s heart. (I hate myself.) An “A-list director” is even being talked to at the moment, although no one seems to know who this might be. The budget is surprisingly high at $60 million,...

Margaret Pomeranz delivered a powerful keynote speech at the opening of the Spaa Conference yesterday in Sydney, and Encore has the full transcript of her meditation on the state of Australian film and television – and why Government and audiences should appreciate the arts a little more.
I’m extremely grateful to Spaa for inviting me to give this keynote speech today. It is the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture and I want to honour the man today. Hector put Australian television on the map, he made Australian accents acceptable in the media. Do you remember when we could only stomach New Zealanders reading our news because they sounded more English than us? Brian Henderson was a prime example. But more than that Hector validated Australian writers, Australian actors, directors, designers, a whole Australian infrastructure, Some of those people are still working today. In a very significant way Hector created an industry,...
