Adam Lambert is reflecting on his time on “American Idol”.
The musician was runner-up on the show back in 2009 and has since gone on to have huge success, performing in Queen and selling over 3 million albums and 5 million singles worldwide.
In an interview with Et Canada’s Keshia Chanté, Lambert shares of what he remembers about his “Idol” audition: “What I remember is that I went in there singing a Michael Jackson song, and the judges kind of looked at me like they weren’t sure about it. They weren’t really feeling it.
“And so I was like, ‘I’m not leaving here without, you know, getting through.’ So I was like, ‘Well, okay, well, I can sing something else. What does you always want to hear?’ And they were like, ‘What else do you have?’ And I said, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen.

Where have you gone, American Idol? A nation turns its lonely eyes to … wait, seriously? You’re still on?
Believe it or not, it’s true. Idol has survived long enough to see its 20th birthday. When it debuted on June 11, 2002, the TV singing contest was the blockbuster that promised to define the new pop-culture era. Like the country it’s named after, American Idol is still technically on the map, but it’s staggering in a punch-drunk haze of crushed dreams and betrayed hopes, and the nagging sense that...

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

Season 10 of American Idol. Top 4 results night. May 12, 2011.
I remember it vividly, joyfully — but not just because the exceptional Haley Reinhart (who’d been enduring egregious sabotage from judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson) improbably survived over rocker dude James Durbin. Mostly, the date is blazed into my memory because of a surprise delivery I’d received a few hours earlier from the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services: Three-month-old foster twins, ridiculously cute boys whom my husband and I had only learned about earlier that morning.

"American Idol" just unleashed its final season preview. It should touch you. You get just the right glimpses of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Phillip Phillips, and a few other winners who filled you with strange, hopeful glee all those years ago. You remember most of the big names of the series. But there are some others you should recall too. Here are our five favorite underrated performances in the show's history. 1. Katelyn Epperly, "The Scientist" (Season 9) Ellen DeGeneres was doomed as a panelist when she declared this rendition "too slow." Iowa native Katelyn Epperly made Coldplay's "The Scientist" a proper ballad with this hushed rendering. She gets better and better as she goes along, adding color and dynamic. I 2. Didi Benami, "Play With Fire" (Season 9) Didi Benami triumphed (and kind of failed) in a number of rad ways here. What I love: She picked a song meaningful to her,...

If you cheered Monday’s news that Fox will pull the plug on American Idol after it wraps Season 15 next spring, I get it. Several questions before Wednesday (April 30) night's "American Idol": 1) Why is the announced theme "America's Request" and not "America's Choice"? Is America going to make a suggestion followed by, "Pretty please?" and then Caleb Johnson's gonna be all, "Nuh-uh, America"? 2) Fox only said that the singers would be doing *a* song requested by America. What else will fill the time on Wednesday? 3) How excited do you think Alex Preston will be to have Jason Mraz as his mentor this week? On to the full recap, after the break... 8:02 p.m. Zooey Deschanel, Alex Preston's celebrity crush, makes a guest appearance to intro the show, following in Kevin Bacon's show-plugging footsteps. The theme for "American Idol" this week is going back to the start, which means performing the song they used for their initial audition for the judges. They will also be paired up for duets, which should be interesting.
1. Jessica Meuse, "Blue Eyed Lie," original song
This might be the most emotion we've seen from Jessica since her audition, you can tell she wrote this. She sounds great, really rocking the Stevie Nicks moments on some notes, but also showing off a great growly rocker voice. The only big criticism is that when the camera pulls back, she's standing there knock-kneed. When she doesn't have pants on, she needs a better stance behind the mic. Heh.
2. C.J. Harris, "Soul Shine," The Allman Brothers

So tonight's "American Idol" theme is basically Deja Vu? Weird. Wednesday's (April 2) "Idol" theme is officially Back to the Start and it apparently means that we're going to be hearing the Top 8 sing the songs they auditioned with. How do you judge a singing competition when you don't sing live yourself? That's the question a lot of "American Idol" fans started asking on Twitter last night during Jennifer Lopez's performance of "I Luh Ya Papi."While she looked amazing rocking some sparkly Daisy Dukes and dancing up a storm on stage, her vocals took a back seat -- and the lip-sync criticisms started flying online. To be fair, J.Lo did start out the performance with a lovely a cappella verse, harmonizing with "Idol" alums Pia Toscano, Jessica Sanchez and Allison Iraheta before the backing track took over. But the haterade began once she started dancing -- and even included a tweet from Travel Channel host Andrew Zimmern. .@americanidol Did @jlo just lip sync? It's been an interesting week on "American Idol," and Thursday's (March 20) episode featured heart-breaking decisions and earth-shattering performances!
Jennifer Lopez herself stepped off the judging panel to perform her latest single, "I Luh Ya PaPi" for its very first live unveiling.
Taking the stage with former "American Idol" contestants, Jessica Sanchez from season 11, Pia Toscano of season 10, and season 8's Allison Iraheta, JLo began the performance with the four songstresses singing the song acapella.
The 44-year-old beauty strutted her stuff in sexy booty shorts, dressed just like her backup singers, complimenting the bottom three announcements as Dexter Roberts, Majesty Rose and Mk Nobilette.
Nobilette got the boot in the end, and here is the list of "Idol's" final 9:

American Idol’s Top 10 became Top 9, with Majesty Rose, Dexter Roberts and M.K. Nobilette in the bottom three and M.K. eventually leaving the show.
It was a packed night for judges Harry Connick Jr., Keith Urban and especially for Jennifer Lopez, who performed her new single “I Luh Ya Papi.” Lopez took over the Idol stage with giant fake brick walls covered in graffiti that proudly declared Lopez was performing in “The Bronx.”
The number started with J-Lo sitting on the stoop with her backup singers, American Idol alums Pia Toscano, Jessica Sanchez and Allison Iraheta. They engaged in some playful banter about the male contestants on this season’s Idol before kicking off the song a cappella.
For Thursday’s Tastemakers Showcase, Harry invited Royal Teeth, a band from New Orleans, to perform their single “Wild.”

Of the Bottom 3 singers in the "American Idol" Season 13 Top 10, two had sat on the stools multiple times in the past. Mk Nobilette and Majesty Rose were the veterans, while Dexter Roberts took his first spin on the silver stool. But who went home?
Ultimately, despite a strong "save me" performance, the judges declined to use their save on Mk Nobilette.
At this point in the season we're familiar with the machinations of the results show. Results, performance, more results, another performance, more results, decision time. Top 10 week was no different.
The first group called to learn their fates was Malaya, Dexter and Jessica. Dexter got a special video message from Florida Georgia Line, whose song "Cruise" he performed last night, but unfortunately that was the only good news Ryan Seacrest had for him and he was sent to the bottom. The ladies were safe.

Once again, we're facing some uncertainty as Thursday (March 20) night's "American Idol" results loom. After Wednesday's variably so-so performances, I can imagine a variety of potential eliminations. However, I remain uncertain on which singers would force the judges to use their Save. Probably Alex Preston and Caleb Johnson would be guaranteed saves. But who else? Malaya? Probably. Jena "Gina" Irene? Maybe. Anybody else? I'm not so sure. I'm using a J-Lo picture, because I know she's not going home and I also know she's performing tonight. I don't, however, know how to consistently spell "I Luh Ya Papi," but I know it's J-Lo's new song about her appreciation for the postseason exploits of David Ortiz. Also performing on Thursday? Something called Royal Teeth. Click through for the full recap! 8:58 p.m. Et. This week, I remembered that "Idol" was on at 9 and not at 8. I'm the true hero.

The "American Idol" producers manage to pack a lot into each two-hour performance show, but there are plenty of things that happen behind the scenes that you don't see on your TV screens. Here's what you missed off-camera during the Season 13 Top 11 performance show:
- All the off-tempo clapping last week did have one positive effect: A CBS page told the crowd not to clap during the slow songs. (Thank God.)
- Jessica's "Sound of Silence" was pretty loud in person -- when the band kicked in, the bass drum was so loud it shook the seats in the studio. Also: The judges continued their pow-wow about the Alabama singer well into the commercial.
- Something must've been up in the Urban household on Wednesday night, because Keith was talking to someone on his phone during practically every commercial break. (That's not usual for the country superstar -- he frequently...

Breathe in, y’all. This is the real American Idol with its 70-second performances and glib-ass judge comments. (I’m already starting to grit my teeth whenever Harry brings up “intonation” in a condescending way.) The theme of this live episode’s performances was, essentially, “Be yourself!” So as you can imagine, there were tons of disasters. Being yourself + being interesting = apparently difficult. Let’s rank ‘em.
13. Kristen O’Connor, Kelly Clarkson’s “Beautiful Disaster”
Here’s my impression of Kristen O’Connor and her brilliant Moneyball-style strategizing: “I need to prove my worth since I’m a wild card. My strategy is to choose Kelly Clarkson‘s most forgettable song. See you in the finals!” Billy Beane in the hooooouse. Weirder yet, she somehow intended the song — which is very much addressed from a woman to a man — to be about herself? She’s the beautiful disaster? Or this competition is?...

Ugh, can you believe it? American Idol is back to giving us hour-long Thursday episodes. I thought these salad days of two-hour, Ben Hur-like installments would never end, but I was wrong. Scott Savol wrong.
But girl, Harry Connick Jr. still found the time to slay us with one-liners, like an actual adult we’d actually enjoy spending time with. The adult-iness of the rapport at the Idol judges’ table can’t be underestimated. Polite puns. Knowing asides. Incisive commentary on each other’s commentary. Remember, it was only a year ago that Nicki Minaj yelled obscenities while Mariah Carey muttered Mean Girls references at no one. I like Nicki and love Mariah, but that was more painful than any Lazaro Arbos ballad. This season is like a sweet, saucy, fun-loving Allison Iraheta take on “Hot Stuff.” You know I don’t say that about everyone.
Thursday’s Atlanta auditions were solid!

American Idol‘s 13th season premieres tonight with a new(-ish) cast of judges including the irascible Dolphin Tale star Harry Connick Jr., budding U-Turn actress Jennifer Lopez, and grown-up Peppermint Patty Keith Urban. Maybe they’ll do a good job! I don’t know! But I’ll be there watching because American Idol is still, despite sinking (but relatively phenomenal) ratings, the greatest singing cotillion on TV. Here are five reasons why.
5. The Hollywood rounds give you the best highs and most hilarious lows.
Twelve seasons in, the Hollywood rounds of American Idol remain the most underrated part of the show and maybe the entire reality-competition genre. The bustling energy of the second tryout, where attention-starved contestants who’ve passed the city auditions jump to Hollywood and attempt group numbers in a Fanny Brice-on-roller-skates way, is often the best indicator of how truly talented and likable the auditioning contestants are.

When we join "The X Factor," host Mario Lopez informs us that it's '80s night -- but he emphasizes hits from the nineteen-eighties, which really makes us wonder if he thinks anybody is confused it might be the eighteen-eighties.
Meanwhile, the female judges are decked out in their best '80s attire, which is awesome. Scroogey old Simon, however, cannot be bothered to put a suit jacket on over his plain white t-shirt and rock a Crockett and/or Tubbs look. For shame, Cowell.
However, we must eliminate someone first. You know, we hope they told the act who was eliminated last week when it actually happened so that he or she didn't have to rehearse all this week like normal. That just seems mean.
Anyway, Carlos Guevara is eliminated and for once, America got it exactly right. He had a couple very rough nights, he shouldn't have advanced out of the four-chair challenge.

With the return of American Idol just a few months away, the show wants fans to get involved by selecting a new tagline for season 13. Candice Glover's album was set to drop this week before being delayed again, but iTunes apparently didn't get the memo -- read on to find out the details of this unfortunately snafu. And also in today's Roundup, a new music video has been released for Allison Iraheta's new band.

With his band’s vocalist and former American Idol vocal coach Dorian Holley out this week for a family emergency, Rickey Minor needed to find a singer who could fill in on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. So he turned to season eight Idol alum Allison Iraheta. “Rickey called me Monday morning and asked if I was available to step in,” explains Iraheta. “I received another call Monday night asking if I could also come in on Tuesday. Rickey called again Tuesday evening and asked if I could be a guest for the whole week. Who wouldn’t want to

American Idol has spent the last few years making headlines for its rotating cavalcade of judges, and today is no exception: Harry Connick Jr. and returnee Jennifer Lopez have been officially announced as Keith Urban‘s co-panelists on the 13th season of the show. Connick was one of the show’s standout mentors of the past few seasons, and Lopez was — hmm, amiable? Fine? Un-hated? — during her two-season stint as an Idol barrister. Is this changeup what the show needs?
I’ve argued this in seasons’ past, but American Idol has never been about the judges’ table. You can claim that Simon Cowell was the heart of the show for the first nine seasons, but the fact is, Cowell helped make the show great not because he was mean or funny or even critical, but because he made the show’s vocalists competitive. That’s what any great reality show...

Bridal Idol! Allison Iraheta, who came in fourth on season eight of American Idol, is married, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As revealed on the site's Idol Worship blog, the singer eloped with her Halo Circus bandmate Matthew Hager in January and has been keeping the nuptials under wraps ever since. Iraheta, 21, first met Hager through her friend and guitarist David Immerman. (Hager is a multi-platinum producer who has worked with the likes of Duran Duran, Scott Weiland, Mandy Moore, and the Backstreet Boys.) The three [...]...

I love American Idol, and therefore I can't stand when certain kickass Idol performances are forgotten years later. Here are eight you should keep close to your heart and voice box.
1. Von Smith, "You're All I Need" (season 8)
The ultra-talented Von Smith had the misfortune of auditioning for American Idol during season eight, the year when the Top 36 was slashed down to a Top 13 using a dubious voting system. It didn't help that folks like Adam Lambert and Alexis Grace (!) were endlessly touted before the Top 36, making their inclusion in the Top 13 almost inevitable compared to their little-seen competitors. Von's voice speaks -- nay, soars! -- for itself. So grand and crystal clear, and if I do say so myself, better than 99% of the vocalists we've heard on the show since.
2. Allison Iraheta and Cyndi Lauper, "Time After Time" (season 8)
I've always said that Idol's masterstroke is the season finale,...

Godzilla vs. Mothra. Batman vs. Joker. Coke vs. Pepsi. Michigan vs. Notre Dame. Randy Jackson vs. the English language. These are the rivalries that define the modern age. They’re long-standing. They’re heated. And pretty much everybody’s got an opinion on ‘em.
And now we’ve got…Nicki vs. Mariah? Divas, pleeeease.
On tonight’s episode of American Idol — centered on the Season 12 auditions from Charlotte, Nc — a pair of wannabe alpha judges stomped and roared in an effort to establish dominance. Show insiders trumpeted the imbroglio months before it happened. Fox’s promo department heralded it as must-see TV.

Here's something you'll never hear me say about any reality show besides So You Think You Can Dance: I'm sad that the audition episodes are over. The show handles its tryout weeks with gusto, a lot of respect for its competitors, and more celebration than mockery. (Take note, American Idol.) Even host Cat Deeley, who makes only a few short cameos in each audition episode, is wonderfully sympathetic as a contestant interviewer. The fact that she lives an Emmy-less existence is a human injustice. Let's take this crusade to the streets.
As usual, I've got the five best auditions of the week, this time from the Salt Lake City tryouts. Did anyone wear a tabernacle-like hat and jive in tribute to Brigham Young? Did guest judge Adam Shankman weep an entire great salt lake into his diet green tea? Stay tuned for the unsurprising answers.

Here comes some non-b*tchy diplomacy: The eleventh season of American Idol wound up to be an apples-and-oranges grudge match, and either of the final contestants is a viable contender. For sure. Except here's the thing: If you're not rooting for Jessica Sanchez, you're a screaming ninny in mom jeans, and I hate that you believe you matter. This show is so starved for a female champion of wondrous vocal prowess and stage-stomping finesse that voting otherwise is boring contrarianism. I'm obligated to revisit those other lady contestants who fell like dominoes in previous seasons: Carly Smithson? Allison Iraheta? Crystal Bowersox? Haley Reinhart? They dead, girl. Jessica has the ceiling-piercing wail to reverse the streak, and unfortunately, her opponent Phillip "Maroon 311" Phillips has exactly the skillset to maintain it. He's a fuzzy Xerox of Scotty McCreery who combines Kris Allen's knack for song reinvention and Lee DeWyze's rowring,...

Unlike in previous years, when I called David Cook "a sociopolitical barometer with an awesome comb-over" and compared Adam Lambert to Barack Obama, I've avoided making sweeping generalizations about the 11th season of "American Idol," mostly because, at this point, there's not much about the show that inspires me to do anything (except complain, of course).
Worn down by the past four seasons — the revolving cast of judges, that time Casey Abrams did Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and, of course, the lilywhite list of champions (Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze and Scotty McCreery) — I've come to view "Idol" for what it really is: a massively bloated, increasingly out-of-touch behemoth,...

As American Idol gets closer to the Season 11 finale, its results shows should — by the laws of reality television — get more and more suspenseful. The only problem is that with fewer dreams hanging in the balance, and fewer contestants for evil kitty Ryan Seacrest to bat about like so many trapped mice, the show’s producers have to pad the telecast with alarming amounts of pink slime to fill out the burger.

We’ve reached that point in the American Idol season — after 37 episodes, hundreds of magnificently awful images in the backdrop oval, and what feels like 73 hours of nonsense critiques from Tweedle-Huh, Tweedle-Abs, and Tweedle-Yo — where I start hunting for conspriracy theories with the vigorousness of Skylar Laine tracking an eight-point buck in the woods. (Run, Bambi, run!) And this week’s Top 3 performance episode had ‘em in spades:
* There was Ryan Seacrest’s intro, touting Phillip Phillips and his hometown of Leesburg, Ga, which might’ve been a not-so-subtle reminder of the last growly-voiced, guitar-playing, untucked-shirt-wearing Idol winner Lee DeWyze,...

The first theme for "American Idol" this week is California Dreamin', which means songs from artists/bands from California or songs about California, which is kind of weird, but then the back half is Songs The Idols Wish They Had Written, so basically Anything We Have the Rights To.
Tonight, J.Lo looks sparkly, Steven Tyler looks Vegas-y while showing off his old-man chest and Randy is missing the other three voice parts from his barbershop quartet. Seacrest is looking quite dapper in a gray suit with a striped tie and yellow pocket square. It's better than the disco-ain't-dead-no-tie-big-hair look he sports sometimes.

Ok, now if anybody should be doing Ccr, it's Phillip. This week, he's actually got a handle on the melody. It's not pitch-perfect, but it's much closer than that "Time of the Season" debacle. Also, the...

The chicks and chavs of American Idol wailed two jams this week: one post-2000 anthem and one "soul" song in the tradition of Soul Train, the most phenomenal music series of all time. (Sorry, Dick Clark! I still watch $25,000 Pyramid reruns every day, so no disrespect.) Though it was awkward when Don Cornelius' son Tony appeared in the audience not two months after his father's self-destruction, much of the night was a splendid musical spectacular. Hot. And a couple of beleaguered contestants rebirthed and came alive for the first time in weeks. Wee!
Now, if I were performing this week, I'd have chosen "Work It" by Missy Elliott (I love inventive vagina slang!) and "Ease on Down the Road" from The Wiz. Both would feature Timbaland in a scarecrow costume, if that helps you to understand my vision. Onward to our rankings!

The Voice doomed us to 12 performances last night (all from Teams Christina and Blake), and only two qualified for an A grade, if I'm being honest. And naturally, I am. Let's shred these amateurs up like the, er, amateurs they are. Weeee!
Jermaine Paul, "Livin' on a Prayer" D+
Bad news, entire world: I agreed with the legendarily wrong Christina Aguilera on this one. Tie me to a stone and flay me, thanks. "Livin' on a Prayer" is a crowd-pleasing, but meaningless karaoke screamer, and I had flashbacks of college bars and townie taverns and proprietors named Earl Bob when Jermaine Paul ripped into it. He's usually more soulful, or at least recognizable. Here he was... on pitch? Fine? Lost in the slippery-when-wetness? As Xtina noted, the man simply had no connection to Bon Jovi's bleat, and I lost his timbre and tone in the amped-up dreck. He can sing,...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

You can’t always get what you want, as Mick Jagger (and later, Crystal Bowersox) once sang, and that adage has certainly been applicable to most of American Idol‘s first 399 episodes.
On Wednesday, however, in celebration of the 400th installment of the reality-competition granddaddy, Uncle Nigel took a page from Burger King’s ad department and produced an episode that let the Idoloonie Nation have it their way: A Top 13 packed almost entirely with solid (and varied) vocalists. Specific, constructive critiques from the judges. A mentor with serious chops, good humor, and spot-on advice. A clear, unmuddied sound mix.
