Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has bought U.S. rights to “The Animal Kingdom,” Thomas Cailley’s creature-filled dystopian thriller which world premiered as the opening night selection of Cannes Un Certain Regard.
Produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord-Ouest Films, “The Animal Kingdom” was financed and co-produced by Studiocanal, which handles French distribution and international sales. The film is set in a world where mutations in human genetics cause people to transform into hybrid creatures. It boasts stellar performances by Roman Duris (“Final Cut”), Adèle Exarchopoulos (“Blue Is the Warmest Color”) and Paul Kircher (“Winter Boy”). Magnet will release the film next year.
Duris stars as François, who sets off to save his wife, who has been affected by this mysterious condition. As some of the creatures disappear into a nearby forest, François embarks with Emile (Kircher), their 16-year-old son, on a quest to find her with...

A bold departure from France’s cinema tradition of social realism, Thomas Cailley’s widely ambitious sophomore outing “The Animal Kingdom” is equally a creature-filled dystopia, an emotionally charged father-and-son drama and a coming-of-age tale.
The character-driven film world premiered to warm reviews at the Cannes Film Festival where it bowed the Un Certain Regard section. “The Animal Kingdom” is represented in international market by Studiocanal and was produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord Ouest Films, and co-produced by Artemis.
“The Animal Kingdom” takes place in an undetermined future in France which has been swept by a genetic disease causing people to transform into creatures that are being hunted down and killed or institutionalized by authorities. Kircher, the breakout star of Christophe Honoré’s “Winter Boy,” plays 16-year-old Emile whose mother was institutionalized after showing first signs of a genetic mutation. He lives with his father Francois (Romain Duris) who is struggling to overcome grief.

A beach that makes you old sounds right in the wheelhouse of M. Night Shyamalan, the filmmaker who gave us aliens that emit poison gas from their wrists in "Signs" and airborne plant toxins that make you kill yourself in "The Happening." And a beach that makes you old is the premise at the heart of Shyamalan's movie "Old," itself loosely based on the French comic book "Sandcastle" written by Pierre Oscar Levy and illustrated by Frederik Peeters.
Where the beach was little more than a magical realist conceit that Levy and Peeters employed to explore mortality and existence in "Sandcastle," Shyamalan...

This past summer, two-time Academy Award nominee M. Night Shyamalan released Old, which is loosely based on the French language- Swiss graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. The film centers on a family relaxing on a secluded beach discovering that somehow the tropical place is causing them to age rapidly reducing their entire lives into a single day. The latest M. Night Shyamalan picture finally dropped into theaters on July 23, 2021 and it opened at No. 1, topping Snake Eyes. The Problem? The film opened at a measly $16.5 million, Shyamalan’s lowest box office opening

If you’re a film nerd putting together a late summer reading list, look no further. There are a number of books here that could qualify as “beach reads,” chief among them a new novel from Quentin Tarantino. Others might be a tad heavy to lug to the beach, but they will be just as enticing at home. So let’s go swimming in a deep roundup of new books on filmmaking.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino (Harper Perennial)
Only Quentin Tarantino could return to a film just two years later and radically change the order of things, remove numerous noteworthy scenes while expanding others, devote a shocking number of pages to Lancer plot summaries, embark on a headline-grabbing press tour, and still emerge with a book as successful as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. As with any creation from Tarantino, there are moments of real reader discomfort here,...

It was 1999 when director M. Night Shyamalan directed one of the great horror films, "The Sixth Sense," a film that changed the landscape of genre filmmaking moving into the new millennium. Fast-forward 22 years later, and the director is still composing his brand of a scary movie with old school "Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits" vibes with the newest entry "Old."
In "Old," a group of vacationers looking for a relaxing day at a beach encounter a strange anomaly that rapidly ages them. Making thirty minutes resemble about a year of life. The Shyamalan story, borrowed from the 2010 graphic novel "Sandcastle" by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters, preys on the fears associated with time and the questions that arise when life disappears in the blink of an eye.

This article spoilers for Old.
M. Night Shyalaman’s latest, Old, sees a group of families at a luxury resort taken to a special beach which makes them age incredibly rapidly, to the point that their lives play out in entirety over hardly more than a day. It’s a fascinating and bleak premise inspired by the graphic novel Sandcastle by Frederik Peeters and Pierre Oscar Lévy, which doesn’t exactly sound like it’s in the mold of the queen of detective fiction, Agatha Christie.
But watching the movie, the similarities start to show through. Chatting with Den of Geek just ahead of the film’s cinema release, Shyamalan explains that his new priorities when it comes to moviemaking are to focus on contained stories.

As far as brand names go, it looks like G.I. Joe is no match for M. Night Shyamalan. Many were expecting the weekend to be won by Snake Eyes, which is essentially a reboot of the G.I. Joe series, but Old, the latest from Shyamalan, snuck past it, despite not setting the box office on fire itself. With big declines from both Black Widow and Space Jam: A New Legacy, this weekend had the lowest overall gross since before F9: The Fast Saga opened a month ago. It is hard to say whether this is due to a lack of enticing new content to draw people in, renewed fears of Covid due to the Delta variant and rising cases, or many of the top films being available for streaming, and it is likely that all three played some role.
Old took home $16.5 million for the weekend from 3,355 theaters. The film...

Old is the new chiller from director and screenwriter M. Night Shyamalan who is very well known for his twisty plots and rug pull endings. Fans who go to the cinema for that will not be disappointed.
Inspired by the graphic novel Sandcastle, by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters, Old sees a family on a dream holiday get taken to a secluded private beach which they discover is causing them to age very rapidly. But how? And why?
Well, that’s not revealed until the end of the movie. Here we break down what happens and what it all means.
Who Dies in Old?
In short: everyone except Trent and Maddox, the now grown children of the family we begin our journey with. But characters die in different ways and that’s significant. Old is thematically Massive. It essentially attempts to sum up the entire human experience in one movie,...

Alex Wolff has done his fair share of emotionally-daunting films, coming off movies like "Hereditary" and "Pig." But working with director M. Night Shyamalan on his laterst film "Old," the actor says he learned something new from the man he calls his "hero."
"I feel like a big thing I learned from him is to not bring your process into a movie necessarily, and instead to adapt to his process," Wolff told TheWrap. "I felt my best performances in the movie, my best scenes, were when I completely committed to what he was looking to do. When he says do this, this, this, your first instinct as an actor is go, 'Ok, well, I want to understand why am I doing this?' And sometimes if you just go, 'Ok, I'm going to do that without asking questions,' usually your questions get more easily answered."

There are exactly two reactions coming out of an M. Night Shyamalan movie: Deeply satisfied or significantly duped.
For the former, a combination of a thrilling story, great acting, and a mind-blowing twist that people talk about for decades. For the latter, it’s disappointment and The Last Airbender.
For the past few years, M. Night has doing alright. From The Visit to Split to Glass, he has had a steady stream of good movies and it has been nice to see him on top form. But with this latest movie, can bring a new hit to shore.
Starring Vicky Krieps and Gael Garcia Bernal, Old revolves around a family who travel to a resort for the most picturesque holiday. When they head to a private beach, alongside another family and a couple, they discover they are stuck there – rapidly aging.

This week sees two new wide releases hit theaters, Snake Eyes and Old, and after last week’s expectations-smashing debut for Space Jam: A New Legacy, we feel like anything could happen at the box office. Many expect the top spot to be taken by Snake Eyes, the latest entry in the G.I. Joe franchise, but there could be an upset from Old, M. Night Shyamalan’s new supernatural mindbender, which is outrunning Snake Eyes in IMDb page views. They look like solid bets for the top two, and it should be noted that both are theatrical exclusives, but if they have sub-par performances and Space Jam holds strong, we could see the order of things shaken up. Whether or not the current uptick in Covid-19 cases impacts the box office this weekend is another open question.

Life is quite literally a beach in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old,” about a family who find themselves trapped in a sandy enclave where time passes so fast that a six-year-old in the morning will go through puberty by lunch, and a grandmother in the first act has almost no chance of being around for the third. Borrowed from the 2010 graphic novel “Sandcastle” by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters, it’s the sort of unsettling idea that can trigger a wave of existential anxieties just by thinking about it.
And yet Shyamalan’s very silly new movie — his best since “The Village,” but still a pale imitation of the slow-burn psychological thrillers that once earned him modern history’s most iconic Newsweek cover — isn’t nearly as fraught-provoking as its nature would suggest. Rather than allow this story to unfold at the real-time pace that its premise demands, Shyamalan...

With a cast worthy of Agatha Christie, this tale of a resort where time has been terrifyingly accelerated is brilliantly poised between serious and silly
M Night Shyamalan is enjoying some serious mojo-recovery with his best film since The Sixth Sense: a woozy high-concept horror about being trapped on an apparently idyllic private beach, where time is fatally accelerated. Anyone who dislikes overheated beach holidays will probably already know the feeling of supernaturally rapid ageing, horror and face-shrivelling panic. And in fact these are the feelings I’ve often had watching some of Shyamalan’s recent films.
This is different. Old is an enthrallingly bizarre piece of old-fashioned entertainment: adapted by Shyamalan from the graphic novel Sandcastle, by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters; it is exactly suited to Shyamalan’s talent for a particular kind of audacious, ingenious hokum. But unlike his mysteries The Village or The Happening,...

The gulf between M. Night Shyamalan’s good films and his bad ones is now so broad that it seems impossible to believe that they’re made by the same writer-director, were they not so aggressively similar in so many other ways than quality. To say that “Old” is better than “Glass” is not much of a compliment, but it’s also woefully inferior to “Unbreakable” and “Signs,” much less “The Sixth Sense,” whose success and twist-ending structure he will likely never live down.
Adapted from “Sandcastle,” a 2010 graphic novel by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, Shyamalan’s latest indeed features a whole lot of mystery, misdirection, and a last-minute surprise that upends everything the audience thinks they know. But the filmmaker’s diminishing capacity for recognizing naturalistic human behavior once again presents a problem when the time comes for audiences to relate to, much less care about, characters...

Alex Wolff, the self-described “scrappy New York actor” who made a searing impression in 2018’s “Hereditary” and now stars in “Pig” opposite Nicolas Cage and in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old,” thinks everybody needs a little more self-loathing in their lives.
“My face is not symmetrical. Why would I love myself if my face is unsymmetrical? The only people who truly love themselves have symmetrical faces. I’ve got this mole,” he said on Zoom, pointing to the brown spot just above his lip that’s become his insignia. “It’s just not symmetrical. That’s fine. I’m totally fine. And if my hair was just a little easier to tame, if my personality was a little better, maybe I could have some self-love, but self-love is overrated.” He’s speaking from a hotel room in downtown Los Angeles, where it’s “kind of intense, a little jarring,” and far from his NYC home.

M. Night Shyamalan has been terrorizing people for years, long before he was an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker. With his latest film “Old” hitting theaters on Friday, Shyamalan sat down with Variety to talk about his life and career, revealing that even as a teenager, he was finding creative ways to frighten people.
In this case, it was his visiting cousins, who Shyamalan would torture with surprisingly intricate pranks. At the age of 14 he says he would be “merciless, really on the verge of unkind” with his schemes, which included convincing his cousin he was possessed or that there was a serial killer on the loose. He often involved props. “I’d have two different remote controls with the TV and we’d do the Ouija board and the TV would keep turning on and he’d be crying,” Shyamalan reveals. Asked if his relatives are okay today, Shyamalan jokes, “No,...

To celebrate the release of Old, the new film from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan, we sat down with the filmmaker and his young cast to find out some of the secrets of the new horror film.
Taking place on a remote island, Old tells the story of a family – played by Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Thomasin McKenzie, and Alex Wolff – seeking tranquility and peace from their everyday lives. Invited to head to a secluded part of the island, they soon realise that not everything is what it seems in this seemingly tropical paradise.
Loosely adapted from the graphic novel Sandcastle, created by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, Shyamalan brings his own unique voice and storytelling to the text, crafting an uneasy, unnerving, and physiologically rich story about the fears we all have about growing old and time running away from us. Universal Pictures has released the official trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s supernatural thriller “Old,” which is set to hit theaters on July 23.
After a group of travelers finds the body of a dead woman on a beach that swiftly decomposes, they begin to realize that there is something mysterious about this seemingly idyllic vacation destination. When we say the premise of M. Night Shyamalan’s new film “Old” gets old fast, we mean it literally, as a family trip to a remote beach becomes a nightmare.
“Old” stars Gael García Bernal and Vicky Krieps as two parents who bring their kids on vacation, only to watch as their children age rapidly to become teenagers in the blink of an eye. In fact, every person stuck on this little patch of sand is getting wrinkles and slowing down, and one even suddenly sprouts a pregnant belly.
It’s Shyamalan’s return to a twisty, mind-boggling thriller after scoring some recent hits with “Split” and “Glass,” as well as his Apple TV+ series “Servant.” The film opens in the heat of summer, hitting theaters on July 23.
Starring alongside Bernal and Krieps are Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, Alex Wolff, Embeth Davidtz, Eliza Scanlen,...

M. Night Shyamalan revealed over the weekend that production has begun on his latest film at Universal, and he also unveiled the title and first poster for his latest: “Old.”
Shyamalan’s follow-up to “Split” and “Glass” stars Gael García Bernal, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Alex Wolff, Aaron Pierre and Vicky Krieps. The silhouette poster, which calls the film “a new trip,” shows an hour glass, but instead of sand falling, it’s people. And the tagline goes, “It’s only a matter of time.”
“Feels like a miracle that I am standing here shooting the first shot of my new film,” Shyamalan said on Saturday morning.
Plot details have been kept under wraps for “Old” since the project was announced, but Collider reported last week that the film is inspired by the French graphic novel “Sandcastle” by Pierre Oscar Levy and artist Frederik Peeters. The book tells the story...

The title and and release date was revealed on Saturday for director M. Night Shyamalan’s new film Old. Scheduled for a July 23, 2021 release, the filmmaker has been giving fans updates on his Twitter page.
Starring Abbey Lee, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Old began shooting today.
According to Collider, Old “is inspired by the French graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and artist Frederik Peeters. An insider told Collider that Shyamalan received Sandcastle as a Father’s Day gift and loved the premise so much that he purchased the rights to the graphic novel, which served as a launching point for his script.
Sources say the events of Old are set in motion when a group of people find a dead body on a beach and slowly realize there is something unnatural happening on that beach.”

M. Night Shyamalan already is in production in his first feature since 2019’s “Glass,” but until now he’s revealed nothing about the upcoming Universal film. This weekend, the Oscar-nominated “Sixth Sense” director and “Servant” executive producer revealed the title and first artwork for his project, as well as a set image, via Twitter. The movie, Shyamalan said, is called “Old.” See below.
As revealed by Collider, “Old” is inspired by the Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters graphic novel “Sandcastle.” Published in 2010 it’s an existential horror tale about mysterious and rapid aging occurring on a beach, where 13 people seem unable to leave. Shyamalan reportedly purchased the rights after he received “Sandcastle” as a Father’s Day gift.
Here’s the “Sandcastle” synopsis, per Booklist: “By a tidal pool near a small beach on France’s Mediterranean coast, a North African–looking man glimpses a young woman stripping to swim.
