Warner Bros. Discovery will be shutting down its long-running writers’ and directors’ television workshops at the end of the current 2022-23 season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
While they were not specifically diversity programs exclusively for participants from historically excluded backgrounds, the Warner Bros. Television Workshop was regarded as an important pipeline of opportunity for such artists looking to break into the business. The writers’ workshop had been in existence for more than 40 years, with more recent notable alumni including Akela Cooper (Luke Cage, Blumhouse’s upcoming M3GAN), Zak Schwartz (Wu-Tang: An American Saga, TNT’s Snowpiercer) and Latoya Morgan (The Walking Dead, Into the Badlands). Let’s begin today by recognizing Juneteenth, now a national holiday and an opportunity to reflect on the history of the Black community in America and not just sweep it under the rug, like so many are trying to do by deriding history as “critical race theory,” and trying to stop schools and educators from exploring the truth of systemic racism in...

Vera Miao’s original vision for “Two Sentence Horror Stories,” the episodic anthology series which recently aired its second season on The CW, was an updated take on “The Twilight Zone” that engages with complex sociopolitical issues in the same way Rod Sterling’s iconic horror series did in the ’60s but with more diverse characters and storytellers at its center.
“I didn’t go in and pitch a diverse show, and I don’t think of myself as a diverse person,” Miao said during a panel for the show on Thursday, part of TheWrap’s Emmys Screening Series. “[But] I think that there is real untapped potential frankly in the horror genre because literally just looking at what are the voices and the points of view and the perspective, I think that opens up a landscape of stories.”

Though it wasn’t the top program of Tuesday evening according to Nielsen Live+Same Day fast affiliate numbers (that triumph goes to an original of NBC’s “This Is Us”), The CW’s broadcasts of “Two Sentence Horror Stories” and “Trickster” both scored substantial boosts of 66.67% in the key demo, soaring above the previous week’s episodes.
Last night’s new episode of spooky anthology series from Guam-born creator Vera Miao earned a 0.1 rating in the key, adults 18-49 demographic and drew 0.52 million viewers during its 8 p.m. timeslot. The new episode of the coming-of-age tale about an Indigenous teen earned a 0.1 rating in the key demo, and drew 0.37 million viewers at 9 p.m. “Trickster” was recently embedded in a scandal, as its director and producer Michelle Latimer was found guilty of “indigenous-fishing,” claiming to be of Aboriginal descent when she is not. The aftermath led The CW and...

Two Sentence Horror Stories moved from a digital series to The CW broadcast this season.
Created by Vera Miao, the series offers a full movie's worth of scares and sometime's important messages in a condensed format.
We had a chance to chat with Vera about the inspiration of the series, as well as the challenges and fulfillment she encounters during the process of creating her work.
Can you tell me how you first got the idea to make Two Sentence Horror Stories into an anthology?
I came across stories just as someone who tends to track horror-related things when some of the best stories from the Reddit thread went viral. And, really, the idea came out of my reaction to reading the stories because I felt like into very economical form, right? Like just two sentences.

Stage 13 is telling the stories that would get screenwriters thrown out of traditional television studios.
That’s not because the content is offensive or controversial. Quite the opposite, actually: Since launching in 2017, Stage 13 has carved a niche for itself in the increasingly crowded television industry by championing the diverse individuals and social issues that larger studios tend to shy away from.
The Burbank studio, part of Warner Bros. Digital Networks, creates short-form scripted and unscripted television shows that feature inclusive casting and hone in on a variety of topics relevant to millennial and Gen-z audiences. Although television studios are gradually beginning to pay more mind to diverse audiences, Stage 13 has hit the ground running, and its success hasn’t gone unnoticed; it received five Emmy nominations last month.

Bringing creepy online flash fiction and timely original ideas to life on the TV screen, Vera Miao's new anthology series Two Sentence Horror Stories premieres tonight on The CW with two back-to-back episodes ("Gentleman" and "Squirm"), and to celebrate, we caught up with creator and executive producer Miao to discuss the show's journey from Reddit thread to go90 to The CW, as well as the show's technology-infused DNA and diverse tales of terror.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Vera, and congratulations on Two Sentence Horror Stories! This series has had quite a journey to getting made. Can you talk about how it started from the viral Reddit thread to finding a home on Verizon’s go90 channel, to now being a series on The CW?
Vera Miao: The idea for the show grew out of the fun I had reading the stories that went viral from the Reddit thread.

The CW is getting into the horror game with new short-form series that delivers terrifying results.
Vera Miao created the award-winning series that comes from Stage 13 in association with Warner Bros.
Two Sentence Horror Stories features contemporary tales of horror and haunting for the diverse and digital age.
The 100: Coming to an End!
The logline for the series explains its goals:
"Inspired by the viral fan fiction of two sentence horror stories, this anthology series taps into universal primal fears, filtered through the anxieties of the most connected and racially diverse generation.
Despite dizzying advancements in technology, inequality, social progress, and environmental degradation…the things that haunt us are still the same."
We had a chance to view the first two episodes of the series and can attest that in very little time, Two Sentence Horror Stories does what it sets out to do -- scare the $h!t out of you!

Exclusive: Get your crucifix and be ready to recite a bunch of Hail Marys because New Line’s The Nun is coming back and screenwriter Akela Cooper has been tapped to write the script for the next installment of the series which will take us deeper into the hellishly sacred world of The Conjuring universe.
To date, the Conjuring universe has scared up $1.57 billion at the global box office. The Nun alone is the highest grossing film in the series earning more than $365 million worldwide so its no question that they would get back into the habit to frighten us all.
Cooper is no stranger to the thriller and horror genre. In addition to working on the Netflix Marvel series Luke Cage, she was a writer on the Lionsgate/CBS film Hell Fest and penned the screenplay for the upcoming A.I. doll thriller M3gan from Conjuring Godfather James Wan and Atomic Monster.

Justin Chon is recognizable from many of his roles on TV and film — but many might recognize him as Bella’s non-vampire friend Eric in the gigantic supernatural teen blockbuster Twilight franchise. As a filmmaker, Chon is hitting his stride, specifically with his film Gook, which played to critical acclaim and received the Sundance Next Audience Award.
Chon sat down with the New Hollywood Podcast to talk about how he was inspired by his father to be an actor (his dad was a child actor and known as the Macaulay Culkin of South Korea) and his turn as a filmmaker. He specifically talked about his early career when he was on the grind as an actor and how he faced a lack of opportunities for Asians, being considered for a Latino role, whitewashing & appropriation in Hollywood, and typecasting — he even admitted to typecasting himself during an audition without realizing it.

“The Bleeding Edge: A New Generation of Horror” panel at SXSW started off with a loaded question from Stage13’s Two Sentence Horror Stories filmmaker Vera Miao: “How does your identity shape how you are as a horror filmmaker?” Genre mega-producer Jason Blum immediately answered in a joking tone, “That’s a racist question!” But the thing is, he’s kind of right. Miao, a female and first-generation Asian American, gets asked the question all the time, so she decided to ask…...
