I work in the film industry, so storytelling is in my nature. There is an invaluable power to storytelling; stories are what allow us to connect. They are a tool that can be used to inspire others and provide them with an entirely different perspective — an ability that has always been critical, and this has become even more apparent in today’s social climate. Growing up, the stories of others impacted me greatly as a person, and through movies, I was able to bond with my father, Jimmy Lin. Together, we binged on classics like “Casablanca,” “The Godfather” trilogy, “Rocky,” “Eastwood Westerns” and so on — hence my inclination to share my own story.
I am hopeful that my story will impact others the same way that the stories that came before me impacted me.
I grew up in a boarding school three hours north of Wellington, New Zealand, and at 16 years old,...

Exclusive: Neil Burger Emmy-winner Dirk Wittenborn and Johnny Lin’s new production arm, Clandestine Laureate, are teaming on a new untitled film that tells the story of unlikely math genius Christopher Havens. Burger is set to direct, reteaming with his The Lucky Ones screenwriter, Wittenborn, who recently finished the script.
The story follows Havens, a high school drop-out, who is incarcerated and while in solitary confinement, developed an unlikely passion for number theory. Against all odds, he pioneered a new branch of mathematics that stunned the world. Havens still has 15 years left of his 25-year murder sentence.
“Through candid storytelling, we will share untold details of Christopher’s tumultuous journey and his accomplishments,” Lin said. “Who better to capture this idiosyncratic mind of a genius than Dirk and Neil, who both have worked on mad scientist-type projects. Exclusive: Filmula’s Johnny Lin has tapped Andrew Farotte to write an original script for a big-budget epic about World War II in the Pacific. It’s described as a tale of survival, perseverance and human sacrifice, and a bridge of cross-culture collaboration and battle against the Japanese’s invasion. The script will be based on true events.
This pic marks the second collaboration for Filmula and Farotte as the latter is also working on Filmula’s Confederacy of Thelma, a Black List script about the true story behind the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Confederacy of Dunces.
Farotte, who spent over a decade as a producer in non-scripted television, wrote the 2015 Black List screenplay Francis & The Godfather, which chronicled the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. He’s also attached to pen the pilot for Saturday Night Knife & Gun Club, a series from rapper/actor Common and Lionsgate Television.

According to Variety, a well-received sci-fi short called Rise is now being developed into a feature film. The original was made by David Karlak and starred the late Anton Yelchin, and it centered on a very human-like robot being interrogated by a very jerk-like human being in a world where people are rounding up and executing sentient machines. The imagery is so on the nose that it’s less of an allegory about racism than it is literally about racism, racism allegories being on the nose is probably a good thing these days. Plus, one shot in particular looks like a direct nod to The Animatrix, making this one of the first times in a decade that someone has referenced that spin-off project.

Last year we saw an incredible sci-fi short film starring Anton Yelchin called "Rise." The short came from director David Karlak, and I've got the awesome news that it will be adapted into a feature-length film. "Rise" is definitely one of those rare short films that deserves it.
The story is set in a dystopian future “where man's attempt to create artificial intelligence has spun wildly out of control.” The sentient robots “are targeted for elimination after they develop emotional symmetry to humans and a revolutionary war for their survival begins.”
The script for the film will be co-written by Karlak who will also direct. He will write the film with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who previously worked on the Saw series.

Drake is close to star opposite high-profile actors in "Arbitrage". He is reportedly in talks to join Al Pacino, Eva Green and Susan Sarandon as the cast member of the indie movie, which is written and will be directed by Nicholas Jarecki. TheWrap, however, does not mention his role.
The film centers its story on "a hedge fund magnate who is in over his head and desperate to complete the sale of his shady trading empire to a major bank before his fraud is revealed. However, an unexpected, bloody error forces him to turn to the most unlikely corner for help in protecting him from rivals who want to bring him down."
Sarandon and Green will play the character's wife and art dealer mistress respectively. The financial thriller is scheduled to kick off principal photography this March in New York with Johnny Lin, Michael Ohoven, Kevin Turen and Robert Salerno producing.

She's done drama, action and cartoon voiceovers, but it's rare that she's dipped a toe into ensemble comedy (unless you count St Elmo's Fire). That's about to be rectified however, with the news that Demi Moore has joined The Reasonable Bunch. She'll star alongside Thomas Haden Church, Kate Bosworth, Martin Landau, Ellen Barkin and Ellen Burstyn in what's described as "a comedy about warring exes and battling relatives at a family wedding."Shades of Bride Wars or echoes of Meet the Parents? Difficult to call, since details are sketchy at the moment: THR's exclusive is more about the production set-up, which involves producer Johnny Lin (Hesher) and the Filmula production company that specialises in budgets below $60m. The Reasonable Bunch will be the second time behind the camera for Sam Levinson (son of Barry), who seems to be building a good working relationship with Barkin: she was in his previous Devil in My Shoes.

Demi Moore, Thomas Haden Church and Kate Bosworth are starring in "The Reasonable Bunch," a comedy about warring exes and battling relatives at a family wedding that starts shooting this month in New York.
Ellen Barkin and Ellen Burstyn also are cast in the film, which is being produced by Johnny Lin and helmed by Sam Levinson, an actor and son of director Barry Levinson.
The younger Levinson this year made his directing debut on "Devil in My Shoes," which also starred Barkin.
Lin, based in Los Angeles, produces through Filmula, which has been aggressively investing in movies with budgets of up to $60 million. In May, he greenlighted "Tweakers Delight," an Emir Kusturica drama with a $35 million budget. His first film was the Natalie Portman-starring "Hesher" (aka "Rebel" in international markets), which premiered at Sundance and was acquired by Nu Image.

Producer Johnny Lin has reworked production company Filmula with a mandate to finance two to four movies annually and has greenlighted "Tweakers Delight," a drama directed by Emir Kusturica with a $35 million budget.
Filmula also said that international rights to "Hesher," its Natalie Portman starrer that premiered this year at Sundance, have been acquired by Nu Image in a seven-figure deal. The title will be changed in international markets to "Rebel." Domestic rights already have been sold to Newmarket for a fall release.
Filmula, which recently changed its name from Dreamagine, was founded in 2008 as the producing partner of CatchPlay, a division of Via Technologies and Studio Solutions Group. Filmula has offices in Los Angeles and Taiwan.
CatchPlay is perhaps the biggest movie distributor in Taiwan and other parts of Asia. Last year, it released 45 theatricals and more than 100 direct-to-dvd titles, handling films from Relativity Media and Lionsgate, among others.

Park City -- A new distributor has made its mark at Sundance and a veteran indie is back in the game as the result of two film pickups on Thursday. Several more sales were brewing.
The film and video division of independent book publisher Hannover House ponied up about $2 million for "Twelve," director Joel Schumacher's look at drug-dealing among privileged Manhattan teens that will play Friday as the fest's closing feature. Roeg Sutherland, who co-heads CAA's film finance group with Micah Green, shepherded the deal.
Meanwhile, Newmarket Films re-entered the fest market, picking up domestic rights to the Natalie Portman-produced drama "Hesher," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in a deal in the $1 million range.
Late Thursday, as most buyers were leaving town, several other deals were said to be imminent. Some bigger fish were looking to catch the documentary "Catfish," the Weinstein Co. remained the leading candidate to march...
