Sissy, a very sassy and diabolically entertaining new Australian horror movie from director-writing team Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes, puts in its satirical crosshairs two things once believed to be good for humankind, but now widely regarded as evidence of our continued descent into self-inflicted destruction: social media and the wellness industry.
Cecilia, Aka Sissy (Aisha Dee), is an influencer and self-professed “mental health advocate” desperate to keep the likes and engagements coming. The film’s sardonic commentary about “wellness” and the depravities of online existence are closely linked with her vainglorious personality and cringe-inducing behaviour. Early on we see Sissy recording of one of her videos on the floor – air purifier on one side, yoga mat on the other– yabbering...

It's high time that someone rewrote Andy Williams' hit single "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" to be about Halloween instead of the godforsaken hellscape known as Christmas. With October officially in bloom and everyone currently scrambling to figure out what to wear this All Hallow's Eve, there's no better time to curl up with a good scary movie. Fortunately, every streaming service understands the value of a good horror movie in October, and the options for one good scare are limitless. Whether it's ghosts, aliens, slashers, psychological nightmares, or even animals run amok, there's absolutely something for everyone.
The classic holiday favorites like "Halloween," "Trick 'r Treat," "Psycho," "The Exorcist," and "The Shining" have all been recommended time and time again, but there's a rich throng of horror movies ready and waiting for your viewing pleasure. To make things even sweeter, 2022 has been a banger year for horror,...

Plot: Teen best friends Cecilia and Emma, after a decade run into each other. Cecilia is invited to Emma’s bachelorette weekend. But now she’s stuck in a remote cabin with her high school bully, with a taste for revenge.
Review: If you’ve ever experienced bullying, then Sissy may be an uncomfortable watch at first. The idea of having your childhood bullies reintroduced to your life, and then going away with them for a weekend sounds like a horror movie in and of itself. But then add the actual horror twist of revenge? Then you’ve got yourself an interesting time at the movies.
The title of the film comes from Aisha Dee’s character, Cecilia, also known as Sissy. And it is not an easy role to portray. It would all too easy for Sissy to be extremely unlikable and self-centered yet Dee is able to bring...

Stars: Aisha Dee, Hannah Barlow, Emily De Margheriti, Lucy Barrett, Yerin Ha, Daniel Monks | Written and Directed by Hannah Barlow, Kane Senes
A social media influencer unravels when she accidentally meets her childhood bully in this blackly comic horror, co-written and co-directed by Australian husband-and-wife filmmakers Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes. With a thematically rich, genre-savvy script, some delightfully nasty gore moments and a terrific central performance from Aisha Dee, this is one of the best horror movies of the year.
Sissy centres on Cecilia (Dee), who used to be called Sissy at school, where she was the target of bullying. Now in her early 20s, Cecilia has reinvented herself as a social media influencer, offering self-help advice and mental health tips. However, there are hints that Cecilia’s life isn’t quite as together as she likes to make out, at least if the off-camera state of her apartment is anything to go by.

"We made a horror film and it's found this wonderful audience. It's definitely unexpected. And I wouldn't even necessarily say that our film is a straight horror film, but obviously as soon as you squash someone's head, it tends to not really fall in any other genre, no matter what the rest of the movie's about."

There’s a moment in the Netflix film “The Old Guard” where Marwan Kenzari is sitting, handcuffed in a car, surrounded by guards, next to his partner passed out. And a shitty cop says “what is he, your boyfriend?.” All the cops giggle like morons. And then, Marwan proceeds to give one of the most beautiful speeches about love, ending in, “he’s not my boyfriend, he’s all and he’s more.” And then they kiss. And oh, what a kiss. The next time you see them, they are walking out of that armored van having knocked out all the guards. Not only did that monologue make me cry, but I was so overwhelmed to finally see two openly gay characters in a superhero movie wax poetic about love and then kick major ass. It made me realize that that’s what I’m craving in cinema. I want us to be the superhero,...

The Goran Stolevski-directed horror-drama “You Won’t Be Alone,” was Thursday named the best film at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, Korea’s leading genre film event.
The Australia-u.K.-Serbia co-production is set in Macedonia and stars Noomi Rapace in a 19th century tale about a young girl who is transformed into a witch. It premiered at the Sundance festival in January and recently played in Sydney. At the Palm Springs festival, Stolevski won the ‘directors to watch’ prize.
His next feature, “Of An Age,” about a whirlwind gay romance, is already completed and is set as the opening film of next month’s Melbourne Film Festival.
The BiFan jury heaped praise on “You Won’t Be Alone.” “It is a phenomenal attempt to interpret the fundamentals of humanity through the means of genre cinema by using alienated and isolated human creatures borrowed from folk tales, added up with mystery.

Hello, dear readers! The 2022 SXSW Film Festival featured an impressive number of genre goodies on this year’s programming slate, which kept this writer rather busy over the last few weeks. Here are my thoughts on a pair of super fun indie horror projects that fans should definitely keep on their radars for later this year: Kane Senes and Hannah Barlow’s Sissy and Deadstream from the husband-wife team of Joseph and Vanessa Winter.
Sissy: In Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes’ Sissy, we’re introduced to social media influencer and self-appointed self-help guru Cecilia (Aisha Dee), who has never quite shaken the memories of losing her childhood best friend Emma some decades ago. But fate steps in one day when Cecilia bumps into Emma (played by Barlow) at a pharmacy, and her former bestie invites Cecilia to come out and celebrate her impending nuptials to her fiancée, Fran (Lucy Barrett), that night.

Earlier this month, Australian filmmakers Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes celebrated the world premiere of their pitch-black horror comedy Sissy at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. Co-written by both Senes and Barlow, the film’s story is centered around two estranged childhood best friends named Cecilia (Aisha Dee) and Emma (Barlow) who cross paths as adults, and their attempt to reconnect during Emma’s bachelorette weekend goes awry when Cecilia finds herself on the outs with Emma’s fiancée, Fran (Lucy Barrett), and the rest of her friends, culminating in a hellish experience for everyone.
While in Austin, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with the filmmakers and several members of the cast of Sissy about their experiences collaborating on the project, and during our conversation, we chatted about the inspirations behind the story, how and why Aisha Dee was the perfect person to take on the role of Cecilia,...

What is more real? The person you present to the outside world, or the person you hide and keep bottled up. Philosophically, it's tricky. They are both you, and they are both real. The latter might be the easy answer because it relies solely on the individual for confirmation, the the latter can is the face you present to the world and if that is everyone else's experience of a person, is that not also real, maybe even more real? Australian horror comedy Sissy asks the question, and the answer is just as messy as you might think in this glitter-bombed cabin-in-the-outback slasher from directors Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes. Cecelia (Aisha Dee) is an Instagram wellness influencer who goes by @SincerlyCecelia. She preaches balance,...

However you view the western in American filmmaking — as a moth-eaten relic or an eternal form to be resurrected every few years — there's something stale about Kane Senes's tepid historical drama Echoes of War, which utilizes the genre's symbols without delivering on its potential for moral or narrative satisfaction. Set in a rural Reconstruction-era Texas where exactly seven people are still living, Echoes of War serves up a scummy cattle baron named McCluskey (William Forsythe) who's lost all his cattle. There's also a mysterious rider (James Badge Dale) named Wade who turns out to be the long-lost brother-in-law to local milquetoast Seamus Riley (a cueball-bald Ethan Embry) and beloved uncle to two pipsqueaks (Owen Teague and Maika Monroe) w...

Hanan Townshend might be best known at the moment for his work with Terrence Malick. He contributed material to "The Tree Of Life," before being promoted to the main gig of scoring the director's "To The Wonder," his upcoming "Knight Of Cups," as well as the Malick-produced "The Better Angels." And while "Echoes of War," the new Civil War film from director Kane Senes, may be a tinier drama, it may also be the first sign of big things to come for the actress. "Echoes of War" follows a soldier, Wade, played by James Badge Dale, who returns to his quiet country home only for that peace to be uprooted by an oppressive cattle rancher harassing his family at every turn. Monroe plays Wade's niece, Abigail. "Echoes of War" premieres at the Dallas Film Festival before coming to theaters May 15. We’ve been delighted in the last few years to see veteran character actor James Badge Dale break out to bigger and better things. The actor’s been a familiar face for a while thanks to “The Departed” and “The Pacific,” but racked up a string of high-profile credits and scene-stealing performances in things like “Shame,” “The Grey,” “Flight,” “Iron Man 3,” “The Lone Ranger” and “Parkland,” and finally looks to be graduating to lead roles, with horror-actioner “Spectral” due in 2016. Read More: The Breakout Performances of 2012 First up though is something smaller in scale, as Badge Dale takes the lead in indie Civil War drama “Echoes Of War,” which hits theaters next month. Written and directed by Australian helmer Kane Senes, it sees the actor play a haunted soldier who returns home to Texas from the conflict, only to spark up a conflict between his family and a cattle rancher neighbor.

We first introduced the key art for the Civil War drama Echoes of War about a month ago but it was lacking a certain something. There was simply not enough Ethan Embry on it. But here we are now, with a new and improved version. Appreciate it now before someone realizes that Maika Monroe (The Guest and It Follows) whose star is on the rise is missing and the poster should have included her as well. Echoes of War, the feature debut from Australian filmmaker Kane Senes, will open in cinemas and on VOD on May 15, 2015. Keep an eye out for this key art so you American Civil War aficionados know what to keep an eye out for. In post-Civil War Texas, two neighboring families are...
