After Monk ended its run on USA in 2009, creator Andy Breckman never stopped taking notes and coming up with movie ideas for Tony Shalhoub’s alter-ego. But nothing ever quite worked out, recalls Breckman on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television — that is, until the pandemic “nudged things along for us.”
That’s when Shalhoub and his wife Brooke Adams made a four-minute film that depicted Monk during the lockdown, which helped to get the ball rolling for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. The flick, which dropped in December on Peacock, follows the San Francisco-based detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder returning to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly.
“At first it sounded kind of risky,” Shalhoub said. “We wanted to raise the stakes, we did not just want to come back with episode 126. We wanted this to be more special. We wanted...

Few television characters felt more appropriate to revisit in the covid era than Tony Shalhoub’s Adrian Monk, the brilliant homicide detective who suffered from debilitating obsessive compulsive disorder. Though the original run of “Monk” ended in 2009 long before the pandemic began, the character returned — like TV detectives including Angela Lansbury’s Jessica Fletcher — in a movie titled “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” For his encore performance in one of his most beloved roles, Shalhoub could return to the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
According to our current combined odds, Shalhoub ranks just outside our top 10 in 11th place in the Limited/Movie Actor category. Though his movie doesn’t have the buzz like the projects of top contenders Steven Yeun (“Beef”), Jon Hamm (“Fargo”) and Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), the celebrated actor is already earning awards recognition for his performance, netting a Critics Choice Award nomination last month...

The legal drama “Suits” may have been the show of the summer, but another beloved USA property is on top now.
Tony Shalhoub reprises his Emmy-winning role of Adrian Monk in “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie,” a Peacock original that sees the ol’ detective with obsessive compulsive disorder return for one last case (or is it?) in the age of Covid. In the 90-minute film, which is now streaming, Monk is preparing for his stepdaughter Molly’s (Caitlin McGee) upcoming nuptials when he finds himself pulled into an investigation involving a charismatic billionaire with his eyes set on space (James Purefoy).
During its original run from 2002 to 2009, “Monk” was a critically acclaimed comedy and an Emmy mainstay, taking home eight awards in all. Much of the original series cast has returned for the sequel film, including Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Melora Hardin and Hector Elizondo. A...

Adrian Monk is back with Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.
The TV movie, now streaming on Peacock, reunites the cast and creative team behind the former USA series Monk. And making the 90-minute revival felt like a homecoming for star Tony Shalhoub — who reprises his role as the crime-solving detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder — since they filmed in Toronto.
“This is going to sound insane, but we shot the first season in Toronto,” Shalhoub recently told The Hollywood Reporter, speaking 14 years after Monk wrapped an eight-season run for USA Network. The series, which ran from 2002-09, was set in San Francisco. The original pilot, however, was mostly shot in Vancouver, and all seasons after the first were made mainly in Los Angeles.

As it turns out, the two-part finale of the USA Network series Monk — titled “Mr. Monk and the End” — was not the end of the story. Tony Shalhoub’s phobia-prone police consultant is returning to TV for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. In the TV movie, which starts streaming on Peacock on Friday, December 8, Adrian Monk reemerges to solve a very personal case involving stepdaughter Molly (Caitlin McGee) as she prepares for her wedding. “We’re so delighted to have made a movie version of Monk, and we are thrilled that every one of our stars were so enthusiastic about coming back,” creator Andy Breckman, executive producer David Hoberman, and director Randy Zisk said in a statement. “But in coming back, we wanted to do a film that was worthy of our legacy. Plot: Monk returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
Review: Running for eight years on USA, Monk held the title of the most-watched scripted series in cable history until the debut of The Walking Dead. Wrapping up in 2009, Adrian Monk returned briefly in a Covid-19 short showing the Ocd detective coping during the lockdown. Now, fourteen years after the series finale, Monk returns in his first full-length mystery, Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Reuniting the four main stars and a couple of key supporting players, Mr. Monk’s Last Case follows the detective getting back into the groove as he investigates a murder that hits very close to home. Setting up potential future standalone mystery films led by Tony Shalhoub, this is a decent story that plays more like an extended episode of the series rather than a fully realized movie.

More than 13 years ago, the world said goodbye to Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) after eight seasons on the USA Network. Monk is a genius detective riddled with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and dozens of phobias. And yet, these very qualities make him such an astute investigator — "It's a gift and a curse." Now, fans get one more sample of Monk's gift with a follow-up movie, "Mr. Monk's Last Case." The film is not a "legacy sequel" as is the trend these days, but a classical post-series TV reunion movie. It's not just the main cast that returns either, but "Monk" co-creators Andy Breckmann and David Hoberman and prolific series director Randy Zisk. The reunion feels complete because of it, since their presence means the storytelling of "Mr. Monk's Last Case" feels like, well, "Monk."

Peacock has unveiled the official trailer for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.
Featuring Tony Shalhoub reprising the titular role, Mr. Monk’s Last Case will follow the famed detective as he returns for “one last, very personal case,” involving his soon-to-be-married stepdaughter, Molly.
The new trailer opens with a classic moment of endearingly-awkward Monk-ness, as he attempts to be humble after receiving a compliment for his prolific mystery-solving record by saying “I couldn’t have done it alone.” Then, after a few seconds, his commitment to the truth wins out, and he makes the correction: “I could have, but it would’ve taken longer.”
From there, the trailer shows how Monk has adapted to overcome the challenges of the past few years, including the Covid-19 pandemic, which surely caused much distress to the germ-avoiding detective. Watch the trailer below.

One of the USA Network's most beloved television series is "Monk," which aired from 2002 to 2009. A police procedural comedy owing a lot to Sherlock Holmes (but set in 2000s San Francisco), the show followed Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub). A detective with crippling obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd) and social anxiety, Monk was once a police officer but retired after the death of his wife Trudy. He semi-comes out of retirement years later as a private consultant and that's when the series begins. Thanks to his performance as Monk, Shalhoub won three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series, and the finale ("Mr. Monk and the End") broke cable ratings records.
In 2020, Shalhoub and his castmates starred in a mini-reunion for Peacock, "Monk In Quarantine." Monk, an infamous germaphobe, goes the extra mile with safety precautions during the Covid-19 pandemic while his friends check in on him over Zoom. Evidently,...

In the follow-up movie, Monk, a brilliant San Francisco-based detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder, returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.

ABC made the shocking decision to cancel Home Economics last week after three seasons.
Series co-creator Michael Colton took to social media over the weekend to reflect on working on the show and the next steps.
"I spent a couple days off Twitter, so I'm just now catching up to the outpouring of love and support for our show," Colton wrote on X on Sunday.
"Making 42 episodes of Home Economics has been the best experience of my career, and that's due to our incredible cast, crew, and fans…"
"Though the show has run its course at ABC, I'm hopeful the Hayworths will pop up somewhere else, if only so I can continue to embarrass my real-life family. Love you all, and #LupeForever."
It's notoriously difficult to save a series after its cancellation because the cast options expire, complicating a renewal.

Heading into the 2023-2024 season, which isn’t quite what it usually is due to the writers and actors’ strikes — the former of which is over (with a deal awaiting a ratification vote) and the latter still ongoing — ABC had a few shows it had yet to make a decision about. That’s starting to change. The network has canceled Home Economics after three seasons, according to Deadline. Still up in the air is The Rookie: Feds (starring Niecy Nash-Betts) and a spinoff of The Good Doctor, The Good Lawyer. The latter aired as a backdoor pilot on the medical drama in the spring, but we’ll have to continue to wait to see if it’s picked up to series. (It stars Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman.) Home Economics follows siblings, their families, their different lives, and the relationships among the three, one of whom is very rich, one middle-class,...

ABC has canceled its comedy Home Economics — one of just two shows from the network’s 2022-23 slate that was still in limbo — after three seasons.
Additionally, ABC has pushed High Potential, a crime drama starring Kaitlin Olson, to a fall 2024 debut after initially ordering it for this season. Dual strikes by writers (which ended this week) and actors during the summer and fall have caused significant shuffling of broadcast network schedules already, and there will likely be more moves as the window for producing new episodes for 2023-24 tightens.
Home Economics had the smallest Nielsen-measured audience among the five ABC comedies that aired during the regular September-to-May season in 2022-23. It averaged 2.92 million viewers per episode over seven days, along with a 0.55 rating among the key ad demographic of adults 18-49 (figures don’t include streaming). In the end, the numbers apparently just didn’t add up for Home Economics. ABC has cancelled the underrated sitcom after three seasons, TVLine has learned.
The Topher Grace-led ensemble comedy wrapped its abbreviated third season in January. At the time, EP Michael Colton expressed optimism about the series’ fate, telling TVLine, “We’re optimistic. We know the network is very happy with the show. And we have a very devoted fan base. We’re just waiting for the right people to weigh in. It’s a process. But we’re planning to come back. ABC has canceled the comedy series “Home Economics” after three seasons, Variety has learned. In addition, the new series “High Potential” starring Kaitlin Olson is now slated to debut in fall 2024.
“Home Economics” aired its third season finale in January of this year, which will now serve as its series finale. The series was one of just two ABC shows that remained on the bubble, with the other being the spinoff “The Rookie: Feds.”
“Home Economics” was a solid performer for ABC but never quite a breakout. ABC picked up the show for a 13 episode third season but then declined to expand the order beyond that. Fans of the show were given a glimmer of hope over the summer when ABC reportedly extended the casts’ options, meaning they were still considering a fourth season, but it ultimately did not come to pass.

Some possible optimism here for the future of ABC’s Home Economics. We’ve learned that cast options have been extended beyond the June 30 deadline, possibly indicating that renewal prospects are good for the comedy series that remains on the bubble. There has been no decision on a renewal yet, however, we hear.
ABC, Lionsgate and ABC Signature declined comment.
Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds are the two ABC series that remain in limbo. As we’ve previously reported, after three seasons, Home Economics has performed respectably, especially in the 18-49 demo, even ticking up in the ratings with Abbott Elementary as a lead-in, but it has not found an extra gear.
The comedy from Michael Colton and John Aboud, inspired by Colton’s real-life experiences, documents the uncomfortable yet heartwarming relationships of three siblings in very different situations: one in the ultra-rich, one in the middle class and one scraping by.

The network has yet to make final calls on renewals for comedy Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.

Home Economics wrapped its regrettably abbreviated 13-episode third season on Wednesday with an earthquake-themed finale, and ABC has given zero indication whether it plans to bring the supremely underrated sitcom back for Season 4. (When asked, an ABC rep tells TVLine that there’s no news to share yet on a possible fourth season.) And since we loathe uncertainty almost as much as we do premature cancellations, we rang up series co-creators/co-showrunners Michael Colton and John Aboud to get a temperature check on the show’s future.

“Home Economics” begins a new season at the Happiest Place on Earth — Disneyland! Season 3 of the ABC comedy kicks things off with the Hayworths at the iconic theme park, joining a long list of shows that have dedicated episodes to Mickey and his friends.

The actor acknowledged that when he shows his two young kids that he shares with his wife, Ashley, the premiere episode, there may be some anger on their part as to why they weren’t able to tag along on set. “I was thinking maybe this would be a good place to bring them,...
