China has set an August 19 release date for Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru. This will be the first major tentpole from Hollywood to hit the market since Universal’s own Jurassic World Dominion which has grossed 157.4M there through Sunday and during an extended nine-week run; it is the biggest studio import of 2022.
The Universal Pictures Weibo account today posted the date for Rise Of Gru writing in part, “Long time no see, troublemakers! Get on the scooter, we’re back!” The Maoyan ticketing platform and the Douban reviews site are also carrying the date. (Check out the full-size China poster below.)
The market’s box office was severely impacted earlier this year amid Covid spikes that forced lockdowns and restrictions, with Shanghai and Beijing hit hard. Dominion‘s dinosaurs helped shake things up, and lately, local Chinese movies have seen a resurgence, including holdover sci-fi comedy...

The Minions are back — and celebrating with a splashy world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The long-awaited “Minions” sequel, dubbed “The Rise of Gru” will open the festival with a screening on Monday, June 13 in the Grande Salle de Bonlieu.

“The Minions franchise is inextricably linked to Annecy,” stated Marcel Jean, the festival’s artistic director. “As early as 2010, ‘Despicable Me’ made its mark at the event, and since then each film in the series has started its success here. Annecy’s enthusiastic audience is the best there is to uproariously celebrate the return of this happy crew who is the symbol of success for Illumination.”

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” is officially a sequel to the “Minions” spinoff movies rather than a “Despicable Me” prequel, but it tells the story of how Gru (Steve Carell) came to be the world’s greatest supervillain.
Set in the 1970s, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” has a pint-sized Gru interviewing with The Vicious Six, a band of stylish and fab supervillains he hopes to team up with. But after they dismiss him as too young and scrawny to be truly evil, he manages to steal a precious stone medallion from the Vicious Six, and that certainly gets their attention. The only problem is, one of Gru’s Minions ends up trading the stone for his own pet rock.
“We just stole something from the worst villains in the world,” Gru says in the trailer. “Now I will be a supervillain!”

As the voice of everybody’s favorite talking Jack Russell terrier Max in The Secret Life of Pets 2, Patton Oswalt not only brought his own unique, edgy humor and laugh-out-loud sardonic tone, but he was also stepping into Max’s paws following Louis C.K.’s removal from the role—a situation Oswalt graciously doesn’t dwell upon. With six voice roles on film and some 35 in television, Oswalt explains how he goes in ‘cold’ on voicework scripts, lest the spontaneity be lost, how following his rip-roaring success as Remy the rat in Ratatouille, he leaned into trusting his own style, and why he’d relish a Ratatouille sequel.
Deadline: I counted your voice roles and I think it’s 35 TV shows and six feature films. Does that sound right to you?
Patton Oswalt: Oh my! I guess. I had no idea. Wow, that’s crazy.

‘Defend, Conserve, Protect.’
Disney’s The Lion King roared through its second weekend in Australia as the studio smashed its own annual global box office record set in 2016 last weekend.
Meanwhile Defend, Conserve, Protect, Stephen Amis’ feature doc which examines the long-running campaign to stop Japanese fishermen killing whales in the Southern Ocean, opened on seven screens in limited sessions.
Narrated by Dan Aykroyd and produced by Amis, Sea Shepherd Australia MD Jeff Hansen and Sea Shepherd colleague Omar Todd, the film fetched an estimated $7,200 but had already netted $37,000 from about 40 advance screenings and festivals.
The executive producer, Label Distribution’s Tait Brady, is happy with the reviews and media coverage and says the film will play through the end of the year with screenings for activists and community groups, after which he will negotiate ancillary deals.
He offered the film to several sales agents but they were wary of the anti-whaling stance.

Sony Pictures/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home easily won the box office derby in its second outing last weekend as Paramount’s horror movie Crawl and Fox’s action comedy Stuber were D.O.A.
Universal’s coming-of-age comedy Booksmart is another case of a movie which critics adored, scoring a 97 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but failed to engage with audiences, except at Cinema Nova.
Meanwhile Richard Lowenstein’s feature doc Mystify: Michael Hutchence reached $761,000 after notching $179,000 in its second weekend on 79 screens for Madman Entertainment.
The second weekend drop of 51 per cent due to loss of screens prompted Madman MD Paul Wiegard to tell If: “We were very disappointed that a number of the multiplex sites played the film for a single week, despite the strong results. On the positive front, the top 30 sites are very healthy...

Kylie Minogue and Michael Hutchence in ‘Mystify: Michael Hutchence.’
Takings at Australian cinemas jumped last weekend thanks to the school holidays, Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man sequel and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 4, while Richard Lowenstein’s Michael Hutchence documentary proved to be effective counter-programming.
Roadshow’s Us romantic drama After opened reasonably well considering its meagre Us results and Palace’s Argentinian rom-com An Unexpected Love appealed to upscale audiences.

‘Yesterday.’
Universal/Working Title’s The Beatles-inspired musical romantic fantasy Yesterday charmed audiences in Australia last weekend, outperforming the Us and UK debuts.
The Danny Boyle-directed film written by Love Actually’s Richard Curtis entered Oz in second place behind the second frame of Disney/Pixar’s blockbuster Toy Story 4.
Starring Himesh Patel as a struggling songwriter who awakes after an accident in a parallel universe where no one had heard of the band and rips off their songs to propel himself to stardom, Yesterday rang up $3.4 million on 281 screens and $3.6 million with previews and the Sydney Film Festival screening.

‘Toy Story 4’ (Photo credit: Disney/Pixar).
The fourth installment in the Disney/Pixar Toy Story franchise has smashed the opening weekend record for an animated title worldwide, ending a run of sequels and reboots which audiences showed they did not want or need.
Directed by Josh Cooley, Toy Story 4 grabbed $244.5 million, beating Incredibles 2‘s $235.8 million, although the $120.9 million domestic debut was only the fourth biggest for the genre, trailing Incredibles 2 ($182 million), Finding Dory ($135 million) and Shrek the Third ($121 million).
It was a buoyant weekend in Oz as Toy Story 4 and Universal/Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets sequel drew kids and families and fans of Indian cinema turned out for Kabir Singh and Shadaa.
However Child’s Play, the remake of the 1988 horror movie about a ghastly voodoo doll named Chucky, found few takers for Roadshow. Among the specialty releases, Sony’s Never Look Away...

Chicago – As a pet owner, I know firsthand that I want an exciting life for my guinea pigs. When I’m off at work, I’d like to think that they throw parties or have some sort of hangouts with other guinea pigs or pets in the area. The alternative being the sad realization that they are stuck in their cage while I’m away, probably bored out of their little minds. “The Secret Life of Pets” franchise continues to brings the fantasy to life, even if the sequel feels too tame.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Let’s get back to the important part: the totally healthy fantasy social life I’ve created for my guinea pigs. Whenever I’m gone I like to imagine they are having fun (mis)adventures that may or may not include acts of superheroism or even crimes. “The Secret Life of Pets 2” continues to scratch that itch,...

“Dark Phoenix,” the X-Men sequel from Disney and Fox, has earned $5 million in its Thursday box office previews, while “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” which is projected similarly this weekend, earned $2.3 million in its previews from 3,250 screens with showings beginning at 6 p.m.
“Dark Phoenix” is Disney’s first major tentpole release following the acquisition of the Fox slate, and it’s the final film with the current cast of X-Men characters before becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio is projecting an opening between $40-50 million for “Dark Phoenix,” with independent trackers saying it could go as high as $55 million in what is expected to be a close race for the top spot against “Secret Life of Pets 2.”
A $55 million opening for “Dark Phoenix” would be just above the series low opening of the previous installment, 2016’s “X-Men: Apocalypse.” That film made $53 million in its opening...

Sad to say, the bloom is off the rose. The first The Secret Life of Pets in 2016 was an animated fluff-ball that hit on a fresh premise: What do our pets do when we close the door and leave them behind? The sequel covers pretty much the same territory. The big difference being that the critters leave New York City for a trip to the farm. Their instinct for mischief stays the same, yet you feel the pall of repetition. Not enough to completely spoil the party, but you get the idea.

Illumination missed the boat on The Secret Life of Pets because the way they’ve told these stories thus far make them a lot more conducive to television than cinema. If that first film’s sprawling character list devolving into wild schemes and pratfalls barely adhering to the flimsy plot beneath wasn’t enough to prove it, composing The Secret Life of Pets 2 into three very disparate subplots forced together at the climax is. Moving to a long-form narrative format would supply breathing room to focus on one or two animals at a time while the others exist tangentially in the background until their episode arrives. We could follow Max (Patton Oswalt replacing persona non grata Louis C.K.) and Duke (Eric Stonestreet) one week and Gidget (Jenny Slate) the next.

There’s an unfortunate imbalance to be found within The Secret Life of Pets 2. Last time, the ingenious concept of what our animal companions do when we’re not around was done to decent effect, creating an animal take on the Toy Story plot. Nothing on the level of Pixar, but still cute and fun. Here, the scales are tilted in the wrong direction. Far too much of this film, which admittedly is aimed at children, opts to be silly nonsense just meant to divert young eyes. The potential of the first movie is mostly abandoned. One aspect here is handled well, but the rest is disappointing and trying for an adult to sit through. Consider me very much let down. The film is a sequel, of course, to The Secret Life of Pets. Again, we follow along with the adventures of various animals while their owners are out and about.

The first “The Secret Life of Pets” movie saw stay-at-home pets separated from their owners as they went off to work. Next they’re going to double down and separate us from our kids too?
In “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” our canine hero Max’s owner now also has a toddler of her own, and she’s about to head off to preschool. So Max sets off on a journey along with all his other animal buddies, including Kevin Hart donning his alter ego “Captain Snowball,” to find her and bring her home.
“The first step of not being afraid, is acting like you’re not afraid,” a new character voiced by Harrison Ford says to Max in the trailer as Max leaps onto the top of a moving train.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
