I’ll admit I doubted a third Tron movie would ever happen, but I’m thankful to be proven wrong. After kicking off production at the start of the year, Tron: Ares has wrapped production and director Joachim Rønning has shared a handful of photos on Instagram.

“That’s a wrap on Tron: Ares,” Rønning wrote. “Thanks to an incredible and tireless crew, I really believe we pushed the filmmaking limits on this movie. Even through six weeks of night shoots you never slowed down. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done.” You’ll note that some of the photos contain blurred-out elements, with one seemingly covering up a Light Cycle.

“We’ve all failed in our lives, but have you ever failed so bad, you bring back Jon Stewart?” Minhaj mused yesterday at the Netflix is a Joke comedy festival.
“I saved a dying institution,” Minhaj added. “You’re welcome.”
For those not following along, after an extended on-air audition process, Comedy Central had reportedly chosen Minhaj to be Trevor Noah’s successor at The Daily Show last summer and planned to make the announcement at the conclusion of the Writers Strike.
Before that could happen, The New Yorker published a widely-shared article that accused Minhaj of embellishing his confessional-style standup material with exaggerations and falsehoods. Although Minhaj later responded with his side of the story and a fact-check of the New Yorker’s fact-check, by then Comedy Central had reportedly backed away from Minhaj amid the controversy.
The Daily Show never did lock down a permanent host.

Hasan Minhaj turned a career downturn into a comic bit last night a the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles, saying that his lost opportunity to host The Daily Show actually saved the long-running institution.
“We’ve all failed in our lives,” Minhaj said, “but have you ever failed so bad, you bring back Jon Stewart?” I saved a dying institution. You’re welcome.”
The reference came during a joking exchange between Minhaj, who was serving as emcee of a festival showcase, and current Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng, who had just taken the stage.
“I’m surprised that Hasan’s able to do this show,” Chieng cracked, according to Deadline’s sister publication Variety. “I guess canceling is not what it used to be.”

With Jon Stewart in Los Angeles this weekend for the Netflix Is a Joke Festival, The Daily Show is switching things up next week.
Instead of hosting the show Monday evening, as he has since returning to the show in February, Stewart will host on Thursday instead.
Jordan Klepper will be at the desk in place Stewart Monday night and will host through Wednesday.
Stewart is set to play L.A.’s Greek Theatre Friday night for a night of standup under the stars that’s being billed as “Jon Stewart and Friends.”
He’s also on the guest list for John Mulaney’s “Everybody’s in L.A.” miniseries, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up sitting down with another semi-retired Late Nighter as a series of comedy legends are expected to participate in a show Netflix is calling “Gods of Comedy With David Letterman.”

The graveyard of shows that have attempted to bring something resembling the late-night format to streaming is vast.
Even as subscription streaming services have become the de facto leader in producing original television content, late night remains one nut that the likes of Netflix, Apple TV+, and Peacock have failed to crack.
It’s not for lack of talent. Jon Stewart, Chelsea Handler, Michelle Wolf, Hasan Minhaj, Amber Ruffin, and Joel McHale have all taken turns behind the proverbial desk for different streamers, but none have made enough of a dent to stick around for more than a season or two.
Why streamers keep trying is no wonder. Talk shows are inexpensive to produce, and if one were to be genuinely successful, it could help combat the dirtiest of words in streaming: churn.

With those strikes over, filming is finally underway. Earlier today, we heard a quote from cast member Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), who said this film will “really push forward what can be done, from a visual perspective.” Now, we have another quote about the movie – and this is the one that every Tron fan has been waiting to hear. The filming of Tron: Ares, the third movie in the Tron franchise, is currently underway, as director Joachim Rønning and his cast are preparing for the planned 2025 release. Many details about the upcoming movie are still scarce and things are kept under wraps, but some of the actors have spoken out about the movie and its production, providing us with some very positive comments. On the other hand, while the cast members have been more or less known, their roles (save for the protagonist) are still undisclosed, which means that casting updates will be frequent as more details are revealed.
And while we’ve been expecting some updates on the names of the confirmed cast members, we’ve actually received a pretty amazing scoop instead, as it has officially been confirmed that the series’ legend, Jeff Bridges, is indeed returning to the franchise and will appear in the third movie as well!

Jeff Bridges reveals he is all set to return to the Tron series that he helped to establish all the way back in 1982, for Tron: Ares.
After many years of waiting, Tron: Ares, a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy, is finally in production. Tron: Legacy's director Joseph Kosinski hasn’t returned and neither have any of the film’s stars – well, apart from one (you can probably guess who it is from the headline). It doesn’t even look like Daft Punk will be returning to give us another memorable score for the third film in the Tron franchise.
It’s not quite all-new though, with reports stating that Jeff Bridges is all set to make an appearance in the film. Bridges himself revealed the news on the Film Comment podcast, stating that he was excited to be working with Jared Leto, the star of Tron: Ares.

Jeff Bridges is getting digitized once again. The actor revealed that he will be returning for “Tron: Ares,” the third “Tron” movie set for release in 2015 and will star Jared Leto.
Bridges revealed the news on the Film Comment podcast on Friday, saying that he headed out over the weekend to film a part for the threequel and was even anxious about working with an actor like Leto.
“Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work,” Bridges said.
Bridges reprised his role as Kevin Flynn in 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” after he first appeared in the groundbreaking 1982 video-game movie. “Legacy” aimed to push another technical visual effects boundary by de-aging his character, with Bridges playing himself and his younger avatar. Jeff Bridges is going back to the grid.
The 74-year-old actor told the Film Comment podcast (via The Playlist) that he is going to appear in “Tron: Ares,” the third film in the long-running sci-fi franchise that Bridges inaugurated with “Tron” in 1982 and reprised with “Tron: Legacy” in 2010. The new film stars Jared Leto as the titular character Ares, with Joachim Rønning (“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”) directing from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.

The originalTRON movie premiered in 1982, and it became one of the most popular sci-fi films of the era and is now considered a cult classic. Its sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and received mixed reviews, but Disney still decided to continue the series, and Tron: Ares, the third movie in the series, is set to come out on October 10, 2025, as we have reported earlier. And while there is still some time before the movie’s premiere, the actors involved are discussing the work on the movie, and from what Cameron Monaghan, one of the movie’s main stars, said, we are in for an exciting sequel.
Plans for a third movie started emerging back in 2010 after Legacy, but several ideas and projects were scrapped before it was confirmed in 2022 that the movie was still happening and production was set to begin in 2023, although was originally postponed indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Nakaji did share a very interesting fact as well. He claimed that the effect of light shining through the muscles of the kaiju in the manga and anime was inspired by the movie Tron.

Welcome back to the Grid, user. Disney is finally following up their cult franchise with a new entry, Tron: Ares. While the new entry in the series does not seemingly feature the Flynn family, at least for now, their legacy will be put into further question as a sophisticated program escapes from the game and ventures into our world. Jared Leto, who had a big swing and a miss with his last franchise attempt, Morbius, is heading up the cast for this continuation. Disney recently unveiled details of Tron: Ares‘ release at last week’s CinemaCon.
Cbr.com has reported on an on-set video taken during a night shoot on the production. The video was posted to social media and seems to show a scene that takes place in a city street with cars stalled in the middle of the road. Jared Leto is seen in full view in his character’s costume.

On his Netflix series “Patriot Act,” Hasan Minhaj once laid in to TurboTax. Now he’s teamed with Sen. Elizabeth Warren to promote an alternative filing option for taxpayers as the April 15 deadline approaches.
Last month, the IRS and Treasury Department partnered on the launch the Direct File Pilot Program, which provides an option for taxpayers in 12 states to file basic income tax returns directly with the IRS rather than through an alternative online service. The program is being tested in a dozen states this year with the goal of rolling it out nationally next year. About 19 million taxpayers have the option of using the pilot program this year.
Warren (D-Mass.) posted a video collaboration with Minhaj April 9 on X, formerly known as Twitter, to promote the new option for people who don’t file complicated itemized returns.

Thank you, Hasan Minhaj, for spreading the word!

When Tron first appeared in 1982, it became one of the most popular sci-fi films of the era and is now considered a cult classic. A sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and received mixed reviews, but that did not stop Disney from producing yet another sequel. Tron: Ares is set to be the next installment in the series and will serve as a standalone sequel to the two previous movies. Production began in January 2024 and Disney has now confirmed the film’s official theatrical release date, which is going to happen on October 10, 2025!
Plans for a sequel started emerging back in 2010 after Legacy, but several ideas and projects were scrapped along the way and the sequel seemed to be stuck in developmental hell. In 2022, it was confirmed that the movie was still happening and production was set to begin in 2023, but was initially postponed indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

What if Ilana from “Broad City” was pregnant?
If you want to find out, watch the trailer for “Babes,” which Neon released on Thursday.
In the comedy film, which Ilana Glazer wrote with Josh Rabinowitz, the “Broad City” alum plays Eden, a proudly single, thirtysomething New Yorker who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and decides to keep the baby. She relies on her best friend Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two, for help. It’s going to be a very challenging process, and not even Dawn is sure Eden will be able to pull it off. The humor seems like a more grown-up version of the chaotic whimsy Glazer brought to “Broad City,” her beloved Comedy Central sitcom.

Ilana Glazer is taking her “Broad City” persona to the next level: parenthood. Glazer co-wrote coming-of-age buddy comedy “Babes” with Josh Rabinowitz to chart the hilarity of becoming a parent while still being very much an adolescent at heart.
“Babes” follows inseparable childhood best friends Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), two New York City natives who find themselves in different phases of adulthood. When carefree and single Eden decides to have a baby on her own after a one-night stand, their friendship faces its greatest challenge yet, especially as the more responsible Dawn is already a mother of two.
The dramedy marks Pamela Adlon’s feature directorial debut, and alongside Glazer and Buteau, co-stars John Carroll Lynch, Oliver Platt, Sandra Bernhard, Stephan James, and Hasan Minhaj. Co-writers Glazer and Rabinowitz produced the feature along with Susie Fox, Breean Solberg, and Ashley Fox.

It was five months ago that Roy Wood Jr. announced he was leaving The Daily Show after serving as a correspondent at the show for eight years.
Arguably the show’s highest profile correspondent (he had just won rave reviews after hosting the White Correspondents Dinner earlier in 2023), Wood’s departure was yet another blow to The Daily Show following a year of instability that began with former host Trevor Noah’s own abrupt departure in late 2022. A parade of guest hosts followed, then came the Writers Strike, and then–we later learned–after producers told staffers that Comedy Central was finally moving ahead with a new host (Hasan Minhaj), that decision was reversed.
Now Wood is speaking out. In a candid new interview with fellow Daily Show alum Samantha Bee on her podcast Choice Words, Wood described his decision to leave in binary terms:

By turns tender and raucous, Pamela Adlon’s feature-length directorial debut, Babes, spins the uneasy, unwelcome, weirdly cool corporeal realities of pregnancy into heartfelt comic gold. The film often feels like a kindred spirit or companion piece to Gillian Robespierre’s Obvious Child, with star and co-writer Illana Glazer stepping into the Jenny Slate role as a woman whose arrested development brushes up against the realities of potential motherhood.
Babes stars Glazer as Eden, a yoga instructor who’s Thanksgiving plans are waylaid when her bestie, Dawn (Michelle Buteau), goes into labor with her second child. After a chance subway encounter and one-night stand with a charming actor (Stephan James), Eden finds herself pregnant. Woefully unprepared and estranged from her sole remaining parent (Oliver Platt), Eden leans on Dawn and her husband, Marty (Hasan Minhaj), to help her through the pregnancy and transition into single motherhood. John Oliver took a subtle swipe at Deadline’s coverage of Last Week Tonight in the latest episode of his HBO show.
The British comedian mocked this very publication in a segment about medicine, doctors and state medical boards.
We were the latest television target after Oliver slammed Dancing with the Stars in a segment about North Carolina Republican Mark Robinson, who compared it to Stalin’s showtrials.
Deadline regularly covers Oliver’s salvos on a Sunday and we found ourselves in a somewhat meta situation, recapping his jolly jab at us. It was not unlike our coverage of Hasan Minhaj’s speech at the Independent Spirit Awards, where he said that we have the “web layout of a Craigslist ad” but admitted this site “governs our lives”.

There are many rituals in Dawn (Michelle Buteau) and Eden’s (Ilana Glazer) decades-long friendship, but the most important one happens on Thanksgiving morning.
The best friends of Pamela Adlon’s charming feature Babes meet on that day every year to watch a movie. It can be any film, at any theater. What’s most important is that the two women, friends since they were 11 years old and now separated by no fewer than two trains on New York City public transit, make time for each other.
For the most recent Thanksgiving, seemingly in 2023, Dawn and Eden meet on the Upper West Side for a 9 a.m. show. Dawn, pregnant with her second child, recently moved to the neighborhood with her husband Marty (Hasan Minhaj) and their toddler. Eden still lives in Astoria, the Queens neighborhood she and Dawn spent formative years in, and up until recently both called home.

A female colleague once said that all movies about pregnancy fall under the category “body horror,” regardless of whether they’re a horror film or not. When I naively asked if that was true, she replied: Dude, have you ever been pregnant? Check, and mate. Pop culture’s overall view regarding bringing new life into the world as a simple, follow-the-manual miracle has stuck even into the 21st century: You get an adorable baby bump, gotta rush to the hospital, labor can be hard, and then [pop] out comes a newborn.

A narrative trifurcated across decades and generations, Fawzia Mizra’s “The Queen of My Dreams” follows a young Pakistani Canadian coming to terms with her upbringing. It hits all the familiar beats of a first-generation South Asian story and, despite its novel queer bent and tongue-in-cheek casting, it does little to separate itself, thematically or stylistically, from a now repetitive form of “third culture” storytelling.

We've known that Tron: Ares, Aka the third movie set on the Grid following the original and 2010's Tron: Legacy, has been shooting since January. Joachim Rønning is in the director's chair and the first look at Jared Leto suited up as the title character is online — see it lower down the page.
Ares follows Leto's character, who is dispatched from the digital world into our own on a vital mission, leading to humanity's initial encounter with AI beings (which does make us wonder what happened to Olivia Wilde's Quorra from Legacy).
Alongside Leto, the cast also includes Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson.

We are officially in a bold, new future, folks. No, I'm not talking about how it feels like we're just one misguided billionaire's whims away from actually entering the grid and ending up in some dystopian era where we're literally living through the plot of "Tron" and its follow-up, "Tron: Legacy." I'm referring to the fact that legacy sequels to legacy sequels are now in vogue and here to stay for good. But you can't argue with what the people want and what they want is as simple as it gets: more Daft Punk.
After years and years of viewers demanding a third movie in the "Tron" franchise, Disney is making that wish into a reality. It's been a little over a year since we first found out that the project had been officially green-lit and would proceed under the title "Tron: Ares." Today, we've finally received our first look at the threequel and,...

Jared Leto took to Instagram on Thursday to unveil a first look at Tron: Ares, the latest installment in the Tron franchise now shooting in Vancouver.
Tron: Ares stars Leto as Ares, a computer program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission to introduce artificial intelligence beings to humans.
The Disney tentpole also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson.
Production on Tron: Ares, which is directed by Maleficent: Mistress of Evil‘s Joachim Rønning, was delayed by last year’s SAG/AFTRA strike and started in January 2024.
Disney is targeting a 2025 release for the follow-up to the 1982 seminal science fiction film Tron and the 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy. While the Tron film centered on a video game designer (Jeff Bridges) entering his own creation, and the follow-up focused on his son (Garrett Hedlund) following in his footsteps,...
