Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise.

Hours after Maddie Poppe won season 16 of “American Idol,” two of the previous champs — Ruben Studdard (season 2) and Taylor Hicks (season 5) — made fun of their fleeting fame in a music video spoof on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” That got us wondering what happened to the other lucky 13 winners of this reality competition series.

Just two years after it was cancelled by Fox, “American Idol” returns to ABC on March 11. When this reality competition series hit the airwaves back in 2002, it was a ratings smash, and many of its early winners enjoyed huge success. Indeed, its first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and parlayed her fame into a string of hit records and a new gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.”

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

We may have gotten past the side-eye-inducing drama of American Idol‘s Group Rounds, but rest assured, executive producer Trish Kinane and her mischievous band of editors aren’t going to let this Farewell Season run on the fuel of vocal performances alone.
Preposterous teenage “love stories,” tales of next-level bronchitis (#AintNobodyGotTimeForThat) and the weeping of the lambs all came into play during Wednesday’s final solos (aka The Holding Rooms of the Damned). Show of hands: Did you cringe after Sara Sturm said Lee Jean was like a little brother to her, but Ryan’s voiceover kept pushing them as future lovers anyhow?...

Given all the musicals we've seen on TV recently -- NBC's live-performance versions of "Peter Pan" and "The Sound of Music," not to mention ABC's "Galavant" and all six seasons of Fox's "Glee" -- it's a wonder that the pipeline hasn't flowed in the opposite direction, from the small screen to Broadway.
That may change with the announcements that a couple of TV-based musicals are in the works. One is "Bombshell," the Marilyn Monroe biographical musical that was created and staged over the course of two seasons on NBC's "Smash." Bringing it to Broadway would seem easy enough -- the songs and choreography already exist; all that's needed is a book.
The other is a stage version of "Downton Abbey," which may launch after the British drama's sixth and final season wraps this winter. John Lunn, who composes the music for the series, says he envisions an international tour, starring...

This week of nervous performances and shy interviews has been sort of fun, but now, following the announcement of the Top 13, comes the real American Idol: months of live performances where assured talents shine while singing some of the most dated song choices ever. Will we get another Leiber and Stoller week? I must know!
Let’s rank this year’s competitors from worst to first, shall we? But before we get to that: Did anyone notice that Emmanuel Zidor did not even flinch or reach out in congratulations when Spencer Lloyd was announced as a potential wild card pick for the Top 13? It was Shady and I #gotmylife from it. Made me wonder if Lloyd, the much-touted “worship leader,” is a bit of a homophobe. Zidor did not look like he wanted to look at that guy. Any other theories out there? Emmanuel, if you’re out there,...

Do you agree that Neco should be saved over Ben? Read our take on the latest ‘Idol’gate, then pick a side and cast your vote!
American Idol revealed this season’s top 30 finalists Feb. 13 — or, at least, it revealed most of the top 30. There’s still one major decision left to be made, and unfortunately, the judges are too indecisive to make it on their own. Neco Starr and Ben Briley, both of whom really impressed us in their initial auditions and during Hollywood Week, are neck and neck, and HollywoodLife.com thinks the final spot should go to Neco!

Ugh, can you believe it? American Idol is back to giving us hour-long Thursday episodes. I thought these salad days of two-hour, Ben Hur-like installments would never end, but I was wrong. Scott Savol wrong.
But girl, Harry Connick Jr. still found the time to slay us with one-liners, like an actual adult we’d actually enjoy spending time with. The adult-iness of the rapport at the Idol judges’ table can’t be underestimated. Polite puns. Knowing asides. Incisive commentary on each other’s commentary. Remember, it was only a year ago that Nicki Minaj yelled obscenities while Mariah Carey muttered Mean Girls references at no one. I like Nicki and love Mariah, but that was more painful than any Lazaro Arbos ballad. This season is like a sweet, saucy, fun-loving Allison Iraheta take on “Hot Stuff.” You know I don’t say that about everyone.
Thursday’s Atlanta auditions were solid!

During a recent appearance to promote her holiday single, "Coming Out for Christmas," "American Idol" Season 9 runner up Crystal Bowersox revealed she is bisexual.
"I've been bisexual for, I don't know, as long as I can remember," she says during an interview on "Good Day La." "I just remember being made fun of in junior high ... It was something that was shameful and it really shouldn't be."
That's where Bowersox found inspiration for her single. "I think 40 percent, check my facts, but 40 percent of the youth homeless population is Lgbtq and it's simply because they're not accepted by their families," she explains. "They're kicked out of their homes or feel shame and guilt." Bowersox continues, "That's not what the holidays are about ... To me it's about being with your family and being loved and accepted for who you are."

It’s Candice vs. Kree. But only one is still fighting.
Here is my solemn promise: The last competitive episode of every American Idol season is anticlimactic and boring, and the last actual episode of every American Idol season is shockingly, face-kickingly wonderful. Seriously. Wednesday night we watched as Candice and Kree sauntered around a Cirque du Soleil-size stage and gurgled tunes new and old for an audience that knew exactly what to expect. It wasn’t a memorable night for either performer, even though they both delivered at least one knockout performance. My takeaway from the night is this: If you came in rooting for Kree, you’re still rooting for Kree now. If you came in rooting for Candice, you’re still rooting for Candice. And I like you better. Because Candice is the rightful next American Idol.

If only it were possible to crown two winners. Because in this battle of soul singers -- the first girl versus girl finale since 2004 -- Kree Harrison and Candice Glover, both wildly talented, have proven to be equally deserving of the season 12 title. Recall when Kris Allen pulled off an upset victory against the glorious Adam Lambert, a far superior performer, in season eight. More injustices: goofy Taylor Hicks winning over angel-voiced beauty Katharine McPhee, circa 2006. Lee DeWyze usurping the throne from Crystal Bowersox. And, dare I say it, Clay Aiken was robbed in season two. But after Wednesday's performance show, I

"American Idol" runner-up Crystal Bowersox and her husband of two and a half years Brian Walker are getting a divorce, the couple tells People.
"After two and a half years, we have decided to end our marriage. The friendship and love which brought us together remains strong, and we will continue to support each other in our careers and personal lives.
We are hopeful that people will be respectful of our privacy as we face this emotional and challenging time for our family," says the couple in a statement.
The two were married in October 2010 after only being engaged a few weeks, though the two were friends for a long time before anything romantic was happening. They have no children together, but Bowersox has a 4-year-old son, Tony, from a previous relationship.
Bowersox will be able to keep busy in the wake of her divorce -- this summer she's playing the titular role in "Always.

Ryan Seacrest kicked off Top 4 results night on Season 12 of American Idol with a speech that — depending on your outlook in life, or at least reality television — sounded either incredibly hopeful or deeply ominous: “I will announce some shocking news that will affect the judges and turn the competition upside down. It’s gonna be another serious night of drama.”
Ryan, who’s hummed along this season as quietly and efficiently — and with as little fanfare — as a high-end refrigerator, had already hinted at a “surprise twist” in the Idol proceedings at the end of Wednesday’s Top 4 performance show.

Before we jump into the parent-approved Rock Power of Top 7 week, a word about the group performances that I omit in my recaps: They are just so terrible. Thank God we have a fluorescent-haired watchdog like Nicki Minaj to look Kree Harrison and Janelle Arthur in their buttermilk-sweet eyes and howl, "Cheesy, please Stop It." Ultimately, the group performances don't really factor into the home vote, so it's safer to evaluate each remaining singer based on what they achieve in solo performances. Because what they usually achieve is "being better than Lazaro," which I consider the unofficial theme every single week.
Anyway, here we go, #7-1. I give these kids credit for belting out old rock anthems, because the playlist looks like a gym teacher's iPod. Ride that power chord, little Lazaro!
7. Lazaro Arbos, "We Are the Champions"
Lazaro clearly wants my vote, because 1) he wasn't awful this week, and 2) he was sweaty.

It’s a frigid March night in Philadelphia and Crystal Bowersox is chilling out backstage at The Tin Angel in a dressing room that some artists may consider a tad cramped. It’s a cozy space, with a tiny bed covered by a red, paisley comforter and etchings on the wall from artists that have graced the venue's stage. In this setting, the American Idol alum seems completely relaxed and at home, happily fussing with her bag of tricks which contains some of her road essentials: knitting needles, yarn, her famed leather-bound diary of poetry, some light reading (With My Body

American Idol is getting a major theme upgrade for next Wednesday’s Top 9 performance show (8/7c on Fox), going from what was essentially Mawkish Idol Victory Anthems to the Lennon-McCartney Songbook. Now if we can avoid the seventh rendition of “Imagine” in Idol history and/or the heinous countrification of “Eight Days a Week,” we should be in for a kick-awesome time, yes?

With that in mind, here are my picks for what the Top 9 should tackle on Wednesday. Peruse the list, then hit the comments with your own suggestions!

Good morning!
A reality show is casting for lesbian couples that would like free therapy. It doesn't say if this extends to after episodes have aired and you get to see what your partner said when they were interviewed alone.
Last night on It's a Brad, Brad World, Brad Goreski's assistant Hannah said she had a girl crush on their new client, model Petra Nemcova. Brad asked if she wore flannel to look more lesbian for Petra. Brad wrote on his Bravo blog, "Watching Hannah with Petra was priceless. I don’t think I have ever seen Hannah freak out so much for someone. Clearly she has good taste in clothes, men (her boyfriend is super cute), and women!"
Out playwright/musician Gina Young is in Crystal Bowersox's new video for "Dead Weight." She's sitting to the left of her around the campfire.

If American Idol wanted to find its Season 12 winner via personal ad, the copy would probably read something like this:
Top-rated Reality Show Iso Big-voiced Diva | Been dreaming for six years now about discovering America’s next great female artist — though not the “current” type that looks and sounds like she spontaneously sprouted from the dark, moist corner of a dumpster. (Sorry, wannabe Ke$has!) Turn-ons include girl-next-door charm, working-class backstories and the ability to crush a glory note like The Rock slamming his fist down on an empty Diet Coke can. God, I love this part of American Idol. I love spending two hours on a weeknight exalting young chanteuses like mall-brand Aphrodites and sentencing losers to an eternity in Jimmy Iovine's jean-jacket dungeon. That's quality time with the TV for me.
We saw ten ladies trill for the attention of the increasingly articulate judges on Wednesday, and five of them were booted before the night was over. So satisfying! Take your Charlotte Russe stylings and head back to Branson, losers. You can pick up that extra shift at Dave & Buster's after all.
Now, some general advice for the competing ten women we saw on Wednesday: Matter more. I'm blown away by anybody who seeks a career in entertainment and expects to be applauded for sheer technical skill. You also need to be special, and being special has to matter to you. Have you heard of Madonna? She mattered (and...

A few of the details might’ve varied, but tonight’s installment of American Idol was, at its coal-black, mercenary heart, a less dusty reenactment of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
Oh, sure, Ryan Seacrest went with his standard, “This…is American Idol!” intro (as opposed to the more ominous “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dyin’ time’s here“). And no, there weren’t any feral, bloodthirsty ragamuffins in the front row (just some smiling or occasional booing family members of the contestants). But there was indeed a chiseled Australian dude (sporting better highlights, a more exacting ear, and a...

Crystal Bowersox is the latest "American Idol" alum to head to the Great White Way.
Bowersox tells the Hollywood Reporter that this summer, she'll play the title role in "Always...Patsy Cline," a musical based on letters the singer wrote to her fan club president.
"It's like a lifetime achievement thing. I'm really happy about it," says Bowersox. "I grew up listening to her music, as most of us have, and I feel a special connection to her. Sadly, she died so young that she didn't get to experience or really enjoy [her success]. It's a tragic story and a great play and I'm really honored to be the one they chose to play Patsy."
The official site for the musical describes the piece as "more than a tribute to the legendary country singer."
The show is based on the true story about Cline's friendship with Louise Seger, her most devoted fan.

In the spirit of National Beyoncé Week — brought to you by the National Football League, the United States Congress, the Internet and the House of Dereon — I begin this American Idol recap with the bastardization of a famous lyric from the Artist Occasionally Known as Sasha Fierce:
“To the left, to the left. All the lady Idols in the holding pen to the left.”
Yes, folks, I’m still trying to sort out my feelings about one of the biggest changes to the show’s structure since my early days of recapping Fox’s reality behemoth — back when I identified with #TeamBo over #TeamCarrie.

American Idol doesn’t get everything right all the time, but let’s give the lumbering old beast a round of applause — or as J.Lo likes to call it, a standing ovation — for trimming back the Season 12 auditions to a succinct, three-week affair.
If I’m being completely honest, the sometimes uninspiring Golden Ticket recipients from tonight’s two-city, two-hour extravaganza had me wondering if maybe Nigel Lythgoe & Co. should’ve considered additional cuts. But ultimately, the episode was not without its charms: “The great Randy Jackson” ridiculing Shubha Vedula’s name in front of a national TV audience...

Crystal Bowersox has announced details of her second studio album. The American Idol season nine runner-up will release her new LP in March through her new record label Shanachie Entertainment. "On American Idol, Crystal Bowersox stood out as a real singer with a big voice who made an emotional connection with the audience, similar to the way Adele does," said Shanachie Entertainment's General Manager Randall Grass. "Yet we feel the true depth of her talent as a singer and songwriter has not yet been fully exposed, and we look forward to achieving that with her new album." Steve Berlin of Los Lobos will work on the LP and Jakob Dylan will appear as a special guest. The album will follow her debut release Farmer's Daughter in 2010. She split from record label Jive Records/RCA in October 2011. Speaking about her new label, (more)...

Last night, America crowned Phillip Phillips, the 21-year-old pawn shop worker from Georgia, as the latest "American Idol."
This should've come as a surprise to exactly no one, given that Phillip is now the fifth in an uninterrupted line of "White Guys With Guitars" who have snagged the coveted crown over the past few seasons. I was noting the bias towards "Wgwg" way back in my recap of the Top 24 -- although in those halcyon days, I was foolishly giving the edge to Colton, just because he was more conventionally attractive (and more annoying), even going so far as to note: "He's white, male and can play an instrument, so he'll probably win." Close enough, right?
Clearly, I was discounting the sympathy votes Phil-Phil would earn for his kidney problems, but I did note that he had one of the stand-out performances in the first live round. I've enjoyed a...

Here comes some non-b*tchy diplomacy: The eleventh season of American Idol wound up to be an apples-and-oranges grudge match, and either of the final contestants is a viable contender. For sure. Except here's the thing: If you're not rooting for Jessica Sanchez, you're a screaming ninny in mom jeans, and I hate that you believe you matter. This show is so starved for a female champion of wondrous vocal prowess and stage-stomping finesse that voting otherwise is boring contrarianism. I'm obligated to revisit those other lady contestants who fell like dominoes in previous seasons: Carly Smithson? Allison Iraheta? Crystal Bowersox? Haley Reinhart? They dead, girl. Jessica has the ceiling-piercing wail to reverse the streak, and unfortunately, her opponent Phillip "Maroon 311" Phillips has exactly the skillset to maintain it. He's a fuzzy Xerox of Scotty McCreery who combines Kris Allen's knack for song reinvention and Lee DeWyze's rowring,...

I don’t want to go overboard on American Idol predictions. But after reporting yesterday that online betting sites overwhelmingly see Phillip Phillips coming in first, I feel duty-bound to note that a firm that analyzes social media and Twitter traffic says today that Jessica Sanchez “is the safest pick to win.” From May 18-20, the 16-year-old averaged 61,489 daily mentions vs 38,372 for Phillips, according to General Sentiment. What’s more, it says, “Fans lauded Sanchez’s singing voice, while recent reports of Phillips’ kidney problems caused some concern.” Last year the firm correctly picked Scotty McCreery to win, but in 2010 it wrongly forecast that Crystal Bowersox would beat Lee DeWyze. The firm looked at the brands followed by 577,833 people who also follow Idol’s official Twitter handle. Disney, Starbucks, Espn, Pixar, and Fox News led the list. Although Coca-Cola is one of Idol’s most ubiquitous sponsors, Pepsi had more...

Unlike in previous years, when I called David Cook "a sociopolitical barometer with an awesome comb-over" and compared Adam Lambert to Barack Obama, I've avoided making sweeping generalizations about the 11th season of "American Idol," mostly because, at this point, there's not much about the show that inspires me to do anything (except complain, of course).
Worn down by the past four seasons — the revolving cast of judges, that time Casey Abrams did Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and, of course, the lilywhite list of champions (Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze and Scotty McCreery) — I've come to view "Idol" for what it really is: a massively bloated, increasingly out-of-touch behemoth,...

But that's not all: The top five will also be singing a song from the 1960s too, which makes us wish Elise Testone would've stuck around for another week.
Still, with so many great songs to choose from, chances are someone's gonna have a breakout night. Can Jessica Sanchez reclaim her past glories? Will Josh Ledet burn the house down? And what tune will Hollie Cavanagh sleepwalk through this week?
