Two of spring’s starriest releases arrive on digital platforms this week. Neither was a commercial sensation, but each attracted enough buzz to signal long shelf lives ahead. Watch one when you get home from seeing “Challengers.”
The contender to watch this week: “Love Lies Bleeding“
For her sophomore feature, Rose Glass, one of the coolest directors working today, made an erotic lesbian crime thriller starring Kristen Stewart as an ’80s gym manager who falls hard for a bodybuilder (Katy O’Brian), not realizing her new lady has ties to her estranged gangster father (a long-haired Ed Harris). It’s an electric movie oozing with noirish grime, but it wasn’t quite the runaway hit A24 was probably hoping for, collecting a modest $8.7 million at the worldwide box office despite Stewart’s star power. Still, “Love Lies Bleeding” seems destined for cult-favorite status, and Glass has gained a lifetime’s worth of clout.

After earning rave reviews on the festival scene before landing in theaters last month, Love Lies Bleeding, a revenge thriller from Saint Maud director Rose Glass, has released at home on VOD this week.
Love Lies Bleeding is now available for digital purchase ($24.99) and rental ($19.99)! We’ve also learned that the film is coming to Blu-ray on June 6, 2024.
Katy O’Brian stars alongside Kristen Stewart (Underwater) in the new film from A24, which is said to be “a romance fueled by ego, desire and the American Dream.”
I wrote in my Sundance review, “With a visionary at the helm and an impressive cast willing to follow along with every wild turn thrown at them, Love Lies Bleeding makes for a captivating ‘80s set crime thriller unafraid to get deeply weird and ultra-violent.” Expect things to get weird and violent: “That it devolves into madness, complete with humor and surreal imagery, means...

Big news for the "They don't make 'em like they used to" crowd: They just did and, as those who were paying attention know, it's been playing in theaters nationwide for weeks now. "Love Lies Bleeding" lies at the crossroads between a throwback '80s noir and a queer romance that's unabashedly of its time, with both aspects coming together to create an intoxicating mix that's mighty difficult to resist. Starring Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian as a pair of star-crossed lovers who wind up right in the crosshairs of a local crime lord, director Rose Glass' iron-pumping, steroid-injecting, and thoroughly sweat-dripping thriller is one of those movies that practically leaps off the screen and swallows audiences up in the grime and muck of its world.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Anyone But You (Will Gluck)
If anything, Anyone But You‘s spirit is encapsulated in having a running joke about “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield (gags involving that artist’s back catalog seeming to be the Will Gluck auteurist touch) as if the movie’s wholly bland pop soundtrack puts it above that at-least-memorable 2000s ditty. Slight self-awareness with no effort to actually do anything new is the definition of unearned arrogance. This is why it fails as a romcom: too much smarm and not enough charm. – Ethan V. (full review)
Where to Stream: Netflix
Garrett Bradley: Devotion
If you’ve only seen Garrett Bradley’s staggering, Oscar-nominated documentary Time, it’s prime time to catch up on a pair of her earlier work.

Muscular bodies dripping with sweat are all over cinema screens – and each other. But these films are very different from the sports romances of old
This spring is shaping up to be the season of the artful athletic romance in cinema. Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding and Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers both offer up their own twisted queer romances set within the world of sport. Both film-makers share a preoccupation with their athletes, lingering over their bodies in ultra-closeup. Muscles ripple and swell like the powerful pulse of the tide. Perfect, glistening orbs of sweat form then drift off the body in slow motion. In these films, ripped, toned bodies become tantalising, treacherous landscapes, and it’s on this physical terrain that we can see exactly how and why the characters’ internal desires play out.

Max announced on Friday that the acclaimed wrestling drama The Iron Claw from Cannes and Sundance prize-winning filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) will begin streaming exclusively on the platform through its output deal with distributor A24 on May 10.
Based on a true story, The Iron Claw follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day. The film specifically hones in on the supposed “Von Erich curse,” which would see one Von Erich brother after another meet their untimely end, leaving just Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron) left.
Written and directed by Durkin, the film also stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, Maura Tierney and Lily James, among others. A24 financed the pic alongside Access Entertainment and BBC Films. In addition to A24, producers included Tessa Ross,...

The Belgian distribution company behind the Kristen Stewart thriller Love Lies Bleeding has denounced what it described as “homophobic, discriminatory” disruptions during a weekend screening of the pic at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.
“We are shocked and disappointed by the events during the screening of ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ last Saturday during the Bifff (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival),” Antwerp-based The Searchers said in a statement.
“Several spectators testify on social media about the homophobic, discriminatory, and insulting statements from the audience during the screening of our film. As an independent and progressive distributor, we stand for a diverse and inclusive catalog and regret that viewers have felt unsafe.”
The Searchers added that it was “baffled” by the “lack of an appropriate response from the film festival.”

It’s a bit of a mixed bag being a nun in The First Omen. One minute you’re enjoying smutty talk with the sisters while peeling potatoes, or jumping on a trampoline smoking a cig, and the next you’re at the center of a terrifying conspiracy which could change the world as we know it.

Sex, ‘80s, and Robby Müller: How Two Brits Recreated the American Crime Film in ‘Love Lies Bleeding’
Unlike most of the next generation of great director-cinematographer pairings, Ben Fordesman and Rose Glass didn’t have a collaborative history prior to their first feature “Saint Maud.” They didn’t go to school together or make short films — it was Fordesman’s agent who made the connection for “Saint Maud.”
And in interviewing both Glass and Fordesman for this story, it’s clear on the first project they were feeling each other out, figuring out how the other worked, and then at some point it just clicked.
Glass described the development of a visual style on “Saint Maud” that became the basis of their work on their second feature, “Love Lies Bleeding.” “I think that naturally we had a bit of a shorthand, I guess trying to constantly balance this being of [and] in the real world, but also kind of not,” said Glass, while she was a guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast.

Katy O’Brian is a warrior, a fighter, and definitely a survivor. It was not an easy road for her to get her “dream” role in Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding. It was, in actuality, rife with suffering, doubt, and innumerable difficulties. Pushing through the darkness, she came out of it stronger than ever.
It is not easy to work with Crohn’s disease, and O’Brian almost gave up her dream of becoming a successful Hollywood actress. We all know she is already considered to be physically fit, but competing in the 1980s as a bodybuilder (in the 2024 flick) and needing a body like that was a whole different story.

Kristen Stewart’s one condition for joining the Marvel movie machine isn’t a particularly enormous paycheck, or the visibility that a franchise of that magnitude could provide. In a recent interview with the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast, the actress expressed that those frills aren’t all that interesting to her, anyway. However, what she is interested in — enough to make it her only exception — is the idea of Greta Gerwig directing one of those multimillion dollar superhero movies.
“I will likely never do a Marvel movie,” Stewart said.

Until recently, sapphic romances generally meant furtive nods in a corset. Today’s queer offerings are fun, unbuttoned – and climate-appropriate
There’s a scene towards the end of Rose Glass’s romance thriller Love Lies Bleeding in which the leads, Lou (Kristen Stewart) and Jackie (Katy M O’Brian), have a screaming match on a tennis court. “I wish I never met you!” shrieks Jackie, blasting bullets into the sky. Two minutes later they’re embracing. “What’s wrong with me?” she asks. “There is absolutely nothing wrong with you,” Lou whispers to her murderous girlfriend, greased hair framing her face, bomber jacket slung around both shoulders.
To the lesbian eye this is pure dyke camp.

Her quiet life quickly turns into a nightmare because of the horrific secrets hidden in the convent. Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Álvaro Morte. So, if you loved Sweeney’s horror film here are some similar movies you should check out next.
The Convent
Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

Kristen Stewart is opening up about filming Happiest Season, saying it was “fucking annoying” getting “so many” notes from studio executives about her style in the movie.
During a recent interview with Them magazine for her new film Love Lies Bleeding, the actress briefly looked back at filming the 2020 holiday rom-com, directed by Clea DuVall, that featured an LGBTQ love story.
“The identity was beaten out of my goals there,” she said of the film. “I was getting so many studio executive notes about my hair and my clothes. I was like, ‘You did read the script. You did hire me. What are we doing here?’ It was fucking annoying.”
Stewart continued. “And it’s fine, because I guess there are ways that you need to shroud things for everyone to easily digest. And I’m down with that. And honestly, fucking hats off to Clea, because I don’t have the patience [to do] that.

Stars: Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brien, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Ed Harris, Dave Franco | Written and Directed by Rose Glass
Lou (Kristen Stewart) lives a remotely modest life, working as a gym manager in a small town in New Mexico. She soon meets Jackie (Katy O’Brien), an ambitious bodybuilder with dreams of competing in Las Vegas. As the two grow closer, Lou’s family dynamics take over their lives, leading to disastrous consequences.
Let’s begin by stating the obvious — Rose Glass’ work in Love Lies Bleeding has changed the lesbian canon of cinema forever. Even in 2024, a shrewd, meaningful sapphic movie that doesn’t try to be sexual for the sake of pleasure is terribly hard to come by, with golden nuggets such as Carol and Disobedience passing muster. While these often-tragic love stories are all well and good, Glass has doubled down on her unique offerings by incorporating genre and nuanced scope,...

March has been going along well, but only one new wide release made much of a mark this weekend as “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” continued to reign over all, including an actual “king.” Read on for the weekend box office report.
After scoring one of the second-best openings of 2024, the animated “Kung Fu Panda 4” held onto first place for a second weekend in a row, winning Friday with $8.8 million and then repeating with an estimated $30 million for the weekend, down 48% from its opening weekend. It has grossed $107.7 million in its first 10 days in North America. It added another $39.6 million in 56 international territories for a global weekend of $69.6 million and a global total of $176.5 million.
Denis Villeneuve‘s sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two” crossed the $200 million mark domestically in its third weekend, making it the first movie to cross that milestone since “Wonka.” This weekend, it added another $29.1 million,...

The early weekend box office numbers are in, and it looks like Dune: Part Two wasn’t quite able to take the number one spot from Kung Fu Panda 4 after all. It was very close, with the animated sequel grossing $30 million to Dune’s $29.1 million. It’s so close that I’m not quite willing to admit my prediction that Dune 2 would top Panda was wrong, as Denis Villeneuve’s sequel has been overperforming at Sunday matinees the last few weeks. That said, even if it doesn’t top Panda, it still had a great weekend, with it only dropping a modest 37% in its third week. It also passed the double-century mark, with its final gross at $205 million. Will it cross $300 million? It’s possible, although it will face heavy competition over the next two weeks with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong.

In movies, they make love scenes look all glamorous, but behind the scenes, it’s a whole different story. Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian really brought it in Love Lies Bleeding, but shooting those steamy scenes wasn’t a walk in the park.

Katy O'Brian's sex scenes in 'Love Lies Bleeding' felt "not sexy and very silly".The 35-year-old actress gets intimate with both Kristen Stewart and Dave Franco in her latest movie but she insisted there is nothing "glamorous" about shooting the raunchy scenes and she and her co-stars saw the funny side because of all the protective clothing and "buffers" used. She told People magazine: "It's just so not glamorous, and it's really not that sexy when you're doing it. I mean, first of all, you've got a boom-mic guy that's got his microphone hovering over you while it's all happening."Katy explained there are "modesty garments", which are "always kind of funny, weird panty-liner-looking things," as well as other materials to shield their private parts, including "a lot of tape".She explained: "Our intimacy coordinator wanted to make sure I had lots of layers between me and Kristen,...

Kristen Stewart’s Love Lies Bleeding co-star Katy O’Brian is breaking down how their characters’ sex scenes came together and how filming them is far from “sexy,” as some may believe.
In an interview with People magazine, the former police officer and competitive bodybuilder explained that a lot of not-so-sexy work went into her intimate scenes with Stewart’s Lou and Dave Franco’s JJ in the A24 film.
“It’s just so not glamorous, and it’s really not that sexy when you’re doing it,” she said. “I mean, first of all, you’ve got a boom-mic guy that’s got his microphone hovering over you while it’s all happening.”
Love Lies Bleeding director Rose Glass, who also sat down with the publication, shared that, before production begins, the actors and intimacy coordinators discuss what they’re comfortable with and exactly what will happen in the scene.

With no big new releases at the box office this weekend, sci-fi epic "Dune: Part Two" and "Kung Fu Panda 4" are staying seated at the top of the charts. It's a closer race than last week, though, as the second half of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" adaptation continues to draw crowds and rake in those lucrative IMAX ticket sales. Deadline reports that "Dune: Part Two" is tracking to gross $28-29 million in its third weekend at the box office, a relatively small drop of around 38% from last week.
The beauty of counter-programming, though, is that two big movies can dominate at the box office without cannibalizing each other (sometimes they can even team up and help each other). After a strong $57.9 million start last weekend, "Kung Fu Panda 4" is tracking for a $31.5 million second weekend, a drop of around 46%.
While Jack Black's kung fu fighting panda looks likely to land the No.

When you come across a movie like Love Lies Bleeding, it’s more than a pleasant surprise. Frankly, I walked into the screening knowing nothing about the film. That was a treat. Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian are fantastic as lovers with a little revenge on the mind. It also features terrific performances from both Dave Franco and especially, the great Ed Harris. Rose Glass has crafted a smart and thrilling feature that showcases two electric performances from both Stewart and O’Brian. Love Lies Bleeding is currently in theatres and it’s the kind of movie you may want to seek out Asap.

Ready for a cinematic “walk on the wild side”? Perhaps something in the film noir category, but not similar to something you’d run across on one of those nostalgia streaming channels. Maybe something set just before the turn of the century rather than the decade post-wwii. Sure, this new flick is a crime thriller involving multiple murders, but that’s just one aspect. Let’s see, there’s a big (truly huge) daughter/father conflict so it’s a family drama. And it’s certainly a romance ala’ girl meets girl. Oh, and one of them is seeking fame in the competitive world of female bodybuilding events. Now, that’s really different and certainly unique. Mix all those genres and subplots together and you get an insight into the provocative title, Love Lies Bleeding.
Oh, the backdrop year is in the 20th century, way back in 1989. We first meet...

Nowadays, it seems odd to remember a time when the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated Kristen Stewart wasn’t considered a great actor, or even a good one. But from 2008 to 2012, that was the prevailing opinion about the Los Angeles-born performer’s abilities — or, at the very least, the prevailing opinion about her on the internet.
A child actor who worked consistently since she was 12, when she portrayed Jodie Foster’s daughter in David Fincher thriller “Panic Room,” Stewart practically exploded into a global film star when she headlined 2008’s “Twilight,” based on the popular vampire teen romance novels by Stephenie Meyer. Opposite instant sex symbol Robert Pattinson, Stewart was the moody, shy, awkward Bella Swan, the type of female heroine whose specificity takes a backseat to general relatability, so the tween girls reading the books can imagine themselves in her shoes.

Icelandic football filmThe Home Game won the Glasgow Film Festival audience award which was presented as the 20th edition drew to a close in the Scottish city last night (March 10).
Smari Gunn and Logi Sigursveinsson’s documentary about plucky underdogs Reynir Fc’s bid for cup glory scored the highest audience score in the award’s 10-year history.
Based in the Icelandic village of Hellissandur, with a population of 369, Reynir Fc was re-formed in 2020 with a ragtag bunch of locals including a 15-year-old schoolboy rapper, 40-something in goal and the somewhat controversial inclusion of a former Iceland women’s team player.

It looks like “Dune: Part Two” reinvigorated the box office so well last weekend that it had to take a backseat to a perfectly-timed family animated sequel in its second weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
DreamWorks Animation and Universal knew that they were likely to have a big hit with the animated sequel “Kung Fu Panda 4,” returning Jack Black to the popular martial arts cartoon character Po, which would benefit from the character’s presence on streaming, as well as from the lack of animated movies in theaters. The mostly positive reviews put “Kung Fu Panda 4” at 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, and being the only animated feature for family audiences allowed it to bring in $19.25 million on Friday, including $3.8 million from Thursday previews. Universal has estimated it winning the weekend quite soundly with $58.3 million in 4,035 theaters, and audiences were generally positive, giving it an “A-” on audience polling site CinemaScore.

Universal and DreamWork’s animated adventure “Kung Fu Panda 4” topped the domestic box office, earning a solid $58.3 million from 4,035 theaters in its opening weekend.
It marks the biggest debut of the franchise since the original, 2008’s “Kung Fu Panda” ($60 million), overtaking the start of the two prior entries, 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3” ($41 million) and 2011’s “Kung Fu Panda 2” ($47.6 million), not adjusted for inflation.
“Family audiences were primed to come out and have fun with a much-beloved franchise,” says Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution. “Animated movies tend to leg out. We anticipate a tremendous corridor.”
Internationally, the fourth film in the martial arts-inspired animated comedy collected $22 million from 41 markets for a global tally of $80 million. This installment cost $85 million to produce, a lower price tag than the first three movies, each of which cost about $150 million. Jack Black returned to voice the main character in “Kung Fu Panda 4,...

Kristen Stewart knows that she doesn’t look her best in ’80s pulp fiction “Love Lies Bleeding,” British filmmaker Rose Glass‘ follow-up to her breakout debut “Saint Maud.” Oscar nominee Stewart (“Spencer”) gives her best performance to date as Lou, who we meet with her gloved hand down a toilet. She’s a shut-down, unhappy lesbian, hungry for something more, who runs a gym and sports a stringy mullet. She comes to life when she falls in love with bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian). Things take a violent turn as Lou’s past comes back to haunt her. And feeding Jackie steroids to help her win an upcoming contest in Las Vegas may not have been the smartest move.
From the script stage, Stewart saw Lou clearly. “It’s like an adult comic book,” she said on Zoom. “When I think about the characters, I can imagine the line-drawing version of them.
