Welcome to our weekly column Can’t Miss Episode of the Week! Every Saturday we’ll be spotlighting a different episode of television from that week that we thought was exceptional and a must-see. Check back to see if your favorite show got the nod — or to learn about a new one! Spoilers ahead. The first couple of episodes of HBO Max’s Julia were a little slow, a little boring, but since then, the series about Julia Child’s creation of her iconic cooking show The French Chef, has become the delightful, wholesome presence many of us are looking for on our television screens. This is never more true than with the season 1 finale, which aired on May 5. There have been endless challenges to making season 1 of The French Chef, but none more so than the iconic Feminine Mystique author Betty Friedan’s (Tracee Chimo Pallero) harsh words last episode.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “Chocolate Souffle,” the Season 1 finale of “Julia,” now streaming on HBO Max.
Season 1 of “Julia” on HBO Max ends on a cozy scene of domesticity emblematic of the show itself: After a series finale in which main character Julia Child (played by actor Sarah Lancashire) suffers a crisis of confidence and backs out of her popular cooking show “The French Chef,” she is ultimately convinced to return to the show by her husband Paul (David Hyde Pierce). Once a snob who tried to forbid Julia from participating in public television, Paul has since gone through a transformative arc, learning how to support his wife while still being his own person. Apologizing for his past behavior, Paul affirms his love for Julia and makes it clear to her how important her work on television really is.

"They're like fertility junkies!" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for the indie dramedy Private Life, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year as the Opening Night film. Private Life is the latest film by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Tamara Jenkins and it's about a couple in New York dealing with the challenges of infertility and conceiving. Kathryn Hahn plays an author undergoing multiple fertility therapies to get pregnant, putting her relationship with her husband, played by Paul Giamatti, on edge. The full cast includes Kayli Carter, Molly Shannon, Emily Robinson, Francesca Root-Dodson, and Tracee Chimo. This is a very classy, sensitive film, balanced with some smart humor, and it received mostly positive reviews out of Sundance. I highly recommend this. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Tamara Jenkins' Private Life, direct from Netflix's YouTube: Private Life is the bracingly funny and moving story of Richard (Paul Giamatti...

TBS has opted not give a third-season renewal to its summer series People of Earth, the network’s supernatural-tinged comedy. Creator David Jenkins tipped the news last night on Twitter, and the move comes after the network had initially renewed it in the fall along with fellow summer series Wrecked and The Guest Book.
Jenkins told fans that Season 3 of the single-camera comedy, from Conan O’Brien’s Conaco and Warner Horizon Television, had already been written.
The series, executive produced by Greg Daniels and O’Brien, revolves around a group of alien abductees – or “experiencers” – living in the small town of Beacon, NY. The ensemble cast includes Nasim Pedrad, Michael Cassidy, Wyatt Cenac, Ana Gasteyer, Oscar Nuñez, Michael Cassidy, Alice Wetterlund, Luka Jones, Brian Huskey, Nancy Lenehan, Tracee Chimo, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Björn Gustafsson and Ken Hall.

TBS has pulled the plug on comedy “People of Earth” after two seasons.
The Turner cabler had renewed the Wyatt Cenac starrer last September for a third season. But series creator David Jenkins broke the news of the cancellation via Twitter on Friday. TBS reps could not immediately be reached for comment early Saturday.
“People of Earth” wrapped its second season last fall. The single-camera laffer, from Conan O’Brien’s Conaco production banner and Warner Horizon Television, revolved around a support group in upstate New York for survivors of alien abductions. Luka Jones, Alice Wetterlund, Michael Cassidy, and Tracee Chimo also starred.
TBS has been on a hot streak the past two years as it revved up its original comedy series slate. “People of Earth” is the first TBS original to get the ax since “Angie Tribeca” launched in 2016.

There is no doubt that screen actors garner far more media exposures than stage actors, but does this mean that the brilliance of stage acting is not appreciated among the public? Absolutely not. Stage acting takes place in a filtered environment that limits exposures, but protect the sanctity and purity of thespianism in a manner that most people simply don’t consider. This is not to rob film and television of its unique and powerful influence, but to be fair to actresses and actors who choose to grace live audiences with their talent over playing to a camera. There is something

“Don’t Get Weird, Ok?” is the ostensible subtitle for “People of Earth,” but thankfully the show itself ignores that message. Created by David Jenkins, with Conan O’Brien and Greg Daniels serving as executive producers, this sweet scripted comedy represents another charming unique voice within TBS’s comedy line-up — one that gets a little bit otherworldly.

Premiering Halloween night, the series focuses on Ozzie (Wyatt Cenac), a journalist doing a story on a support group for alien abductees (well, don’t call them abductees — they prefer the term “experiencers”). Four episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
It doesn’t take long for TBS’s new half-hour sci-fi comedy/drama to get weird. In fact, it’s before the end of the show’s pilot, when one of its alien denizens – which might be a hallucination, or might be an actual reptilian invader bent on humanity’s destruction – appears out of nowhere in the car of series lead Ozzie (Wyatt Cenac) and asks, “don’t get weird, okay?”
That’s one of many played-straight oddities that nets People of Earth its biggest moments of high concept laughs, and more often than not (in the first four episodes made available for review, anyway), the show is far more hit than miss. There’s a straightforward slant to its story – bigwig New Yorker slums it in a small town and quickly becomes invested in its peculiarities – but what People of Earth succeeds...
