2021’s Eternals introduced audiences to a new team of heroes in the MCU. The film boasted a fantastic ensemble cast led by Gemma Chan and Richard Madden. Being helmed by an Oscar-winning director, Chloe Zhao, one expected that the film was going to be one of the best in the franchise, especially with Kevin Feige doubling down on his belief in its quality.
2021’s Eternals was not appreciated by MCU fans
The film received mixed reviews from fans and underperformed at the box office. That has been a bit of a constant for the MCU for the past 2 years. With Jonathan Majors now out as Kang, a sequel to Eternals can introduce a powerful villain who is as threatening as Thanos and can be the MCU’s replacement for Kang.

New York, NY— March 6, 2024 — In July 2019, the world of the X-Men was shattered and reborn on Krakoa in visionary writer Jonathan Hickman’s House of X. In the years since, fans have experienced a golden age of mutant storytelling, filled with bold ideas, astonishing character developments, and revolutionary new takes on the mutant metaphor. Now, the next seminal shift in the history of the X-Men is on the horizon, but first, Marvel Comics proudly presents the final act of the Krakoan Age this June in X-men #35!
X-men #35 will be the milestone 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men and will feature an epic-length story by acclaimed writers and artists who shaped the Krakoan Age, including Gerry Duggan, Kieron Gillen, Al Ewing, Lucas Werneck, Joshua Cassara, and more. The giant-sized issue will also feature a story of family by X-Men master Chris Claremont and offer a glimpse of things to come in the...

In the world of comic books, the term “superpowered” individual can mean a lot of things — from the ability to fly to invisibility. But in the wrold of The Power Fantasy, it has a more specific meaning: anyone who has as much destructive power as the United States’ nuclear arsenal.
That’s the pitch for a new book from writer Kieron Gillen and artist Caspar Wijngaard, who revealed their book Friday at Emerald City Comic Con, a convention held in Seattle. In this world, six people are considered superpowered, and the world depends on them never coming into conflict.
“The Power Fantasy emerged in a similar way to The Wicked + The Divine,” said Gillen in a statement. “I was doing a book at Marvel, and became aware of exactly the sort of things I could do with the reins taken off. “As The Wicked + the Divine was to Young Avengers,...

The trailer for "X-Men '97," the revival of the cartoon series beloved by '90s kids everywhere, recently premiered. That means it's that time again — that time when nerds like me try to get you superhero movie/TV fans to read some dang comics.
"X-Men" itself was enthusiastic about adapting comic stories, particularly ones written by Chris Claremont during his legendary 17-year-long run on "X-Men". Season 1 of "X-Men" closed out with the two-part time-travel comic "Days of Future Past" and then, in season 3, the show adapted both the original "Phoenix Saga" and "The Dark Phoenix Saga."
Larry Houston, the original producer/director of "X-Men," is a big fan of the comics and made the show with attention to the details of the source material. Houston is back as a consulting producer on "X-Men '97" and head writer Beau DeMayo recruited "X-Men" fans as his team, feeling that enthusiasm about the...

As movies and TV shows have become the dominant mode of superhero storytelling, some comic writers have crossed mediums with the characters they pen. Allan Heinberg wrote a brief run on "Wonder Woman" and years later wrote the screenplay for the 2017 "Wonder Woman" movie. Brian Michael Bendis, the defining Marvel Comics writer of the 2000s, sat on Marvel Studios' now-disbanded "creative committee." James Gunn, as the co-head of DC Studios, has brought writer Tom King into the fold.
"Deadpool & Wolverine," which brings the 20th Century Fox side of Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the latest example of this; one of the movie's five credited co-writers is Zeb Wells, who also wrote an episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." For some Marvel Comic fans, however, his name lives in infamy.
Now, Wells' "X-Men" related work is well-regarded. The 18-issue series "Hellions" was like a mutant version of "Suicide Squad...

The origins of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" begin with the X-Men. A young Joss Whedon read their comic adventures, penned by Chris Claremont, and cites them as an influence on his work; teen heroine Buffy Summers herself is in the vein of Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat.
From 2004 to 2008, Whedon wrote the ongoing comic "Astonishing X-Men," teaming up with artist John Cassaday. Consider the timeframe: "Buffy" and "Angel" had wrapped as classics, "Firefly" was a freshly canceled-too-soon martyr, and Whedon hadn't cracked into the blockbuster movie mainstream with "The Avengers" yet, and allegations of his abusive behavior on set hadn't yet been publicized. His writing an "X-Men" comic felt like nerdy stars aligning.
Is "Astonishing X-Men" worth checking out? It's short and self-contained, which are rare blessings in superhero comics. Whedon also works overtime to repair the reputation of Scott Summers/Cyclops. In the concurrent "X-Men" movies, he was used only...

New York, NY— November 7, 2023 — It’s the beginning of the end of the X-Men’s revolutionary Krakoan Age! Just like Jonathan Hickman boldly kicked it off in 2019 in twin series, House Of X and Powers Of X, the finale of the Krakoan Age will be told across two intertwined series this January in Gerry Duggan and Lucas Werneck’s Fall Of The House Of X and Kieron Gillen and R.B. Silva’s Rise Of The Powers Of X! It’s a who’s who of current mutant mastermind storytellers, and together, they’re bringing Krakoa down in epic style!
The two five-issue limited series will deliver a breathtaking saga across mutant history and future as the X-Men of today and tomorrow wage the final war against extinction across their entire existence! Today, fans can peek ahead at the covers for Fall Of The House Of X #2 and Rise...

Little good came out of "X-Men: Apocalypse." The preceding film "Days of Future Past" was meant to be a fresh start for the Merry Mutants. Instead, director Bryan Singer was exposed as creatively bankrupt; "Apocalypse" rehashes beats from Singer's previous movies like a "greatest hits" compilation. Singer always had little interest in the source material comics and "Apocalypse" showed he was out of his depth trying to make an "X-Men" movie that felt more like them.
This feeling of running on fumes, juxtaposed with a comical misuse of Oscar Isaac's talents, meant "Apocalypse" was the beginning of the end for 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" movies, not a new dawn. It's certainly when their spell over me ended.
The post-credits scene of "X-Men: Apocalypse" in particular is pointless. Its very inclusion was Fox taking a page from rival Marvel Studios, but the sequel set-up doesn't pay off.

Axe: Judgment Day is one of the most fascinating event comics of all time. It’s got all the trappings of a big summer mega crossover, and structurally, it delivers: there is a massive war between the Eternals and the X-Men. Thousands of mutants die (they get better). Captain America dies! He also gets better. Hell, pretty much the entire population of Earth dies. They get better too. It’s massive! It’s exciting! It’s thrilling!
But it’s also a fairly even split between enormous explosions and deep character studies. It pays off years of character development and existential shifts that Kieron Gillen, Judgment Day’s mastermind, has been building across multiple books. It’s the culmination of the story Gillen started in twelve issues and three one-shots of Eternals, and what he had an eye on as he started Immortal X-Men. Hell, it’s even a nice...

When Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca launched "Star Wars: Darth Vader" in 2015 for Marvel Comics, the veteran comic creators set up the former Anakin Skywalker as almost a Bizzaro Luke Skywalker, complete with an interesting cast of characters from across a galaxy far, far away. Among them were criminal archeologist Doctor Aphra and droids BT-1 and 0-0-0, who are kind of like the evil R2-D2 and C-3Po. Plus, just as Luke had his trusty Rookie friend Chewbacca, Vader crosses paths with Wookie bounty hunter Black Krrsantan when the Hutts hire him and Boba Fett to aid the Sith Lord with his missions on Tatooine.
However, after appearing in other areas of the House of Ideas' "Star Wars" line of comics, Krrsantan would surface again in the second episode of "The Book of Boba Fett" on Disney+. This time, he was pitted against his former partner after Fett...

How the hell has Kieron Gillen never written a summer event comic before?
Gillen is the writer behind Eisner- and Hugo-nominated comics such as perennial Den of Geek favorites Once & Future and The Wicked + The Divine. But even before that, he was part of that mid-aughts wave of Image writers who took over Marvel’s flagship books. Gillen wrote a couple of excellent Utopia-era X-Men books (Generation Hope and Uncanny X-Men), as well as a beloved run with Kid Loki that helped inspire one Disney+ show and a relaunch of Young Avengers with Jamie McKelvie that is likely going to have an impact on the MCU further down the line. And yet, somehow, his first blockbuster comics crossover is out in 2022.

The Book of Boba Fett picks up the threads of the bounty hunter’s untold adventures in the years after Return of the Jedi, paving a new, unexpected path for the fan-favorite rogue. While most Star Wars fans expected the Mandalorian gunslinger to once again embrace a life of crime, no one could have predicted Boba’s big career change from bounty hunter to Tatooine’s newest crime lord.
But this is actually a Boba Fett story decades in the making. After all, writers were already hard at work continuing the book of Boba just mere months after he took a tumble into the sarlacc pit in 1983. Many of those early stories took place in the pages of the classic Star Wars comics published by Marvel in the ’70s and ’80s. This article contains Eternals spoilers.
It’s not hard, when a Captain America or an Iron Man movie hits, for Marvel to have a comic on shelves that new fans can be pointed toward as an accessible way to get to know the characters. The same can’t be said for The Eternals. In a lot of ways, Jack Kirby’s most bizarre creations – god-like beings, created by the all-powerful Celestials to do battle with the deformed, wild Deviants – have endured despite their relative scarcity. The sum total of what can be reasonably called Eternals stories only runs to about 50 issues. So the task of centering them ahead of their big movie debut in November is both a blessing and a curse, even with an all-star cast and an Oscar-winning director at the helm.
Enter Kieron Gillen.
Gillen is a Marvel veteran and no stranger to the company’s cultural juggernaut side.

Netflix’s popular “Sweet Tooth” series revealed the kinds of worlds available to those willing to look beyond superheroes and see what else comic books have to offer. There’s more to be found than good-guy-versus-bad-guy slugfests, even inside the seemingly narrow field of post-apocalyptic settings and stories. Take a look at the list below and discover all-new ways that the world could end, on the big scale as well as the small, without even one superhero showing up to save the day.

(This article contains some Major spoilers for the fourth episode of the Disney+ series “Loki”)
After last week’s rather leisurely episode, the non-stop barrage of enormous plot twists in a row in the fourth episode hit us like a ton of bricks. The last 20 minutes or so of the episode brought us a veritable fast and furious cavalcade of revelations. It overloaded out brains just a little bit, because it’s not so easy to grasp all the ramifications of everything we learned this week. But let’s focus on the end, which gave us the biggest surprise of all.
The climax this week saw Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) finally take down the Time-Keepers — who are apparently just robots, puppets for whoever is actually running the Tva. That’s a big deal, but not that surprising. I think we all kinda guess there was some...

There’s more to Disney Plus’ new series “Loki” than Tom Hiddleston’s admittedly unmistakable charm, as great as that may be; the Marvel version of the mythical figure, which debuted in 1963’s “Journey Into Mystery” #85, has more than half a century’s worth of comic book history of mischief and troublemaking behind him, with his crimes ranging from the near-genocidal to the utterly mundane. If the TV show has left you wanting more, then here’s where to find it.
‘Loki’ Omnibus Vol. 1
The earliest appearances of Marvel’s Loki are a strange thing to revisit from today’s perspective; he’s at once more archly, stereotypically evil, while also managing to be almost cartoonishly unthreatening.

The first trailer for Marvel’s Eternals is here, and it’s full of quick looks at all of our…favorite characters is probably a stretch, but there sure are a bunch of Eternals in there. Ajak narrates, Ikaris and Sersi get stuff to do, we even get Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman/Black Knight looking at the sky and knowing nothing. But there’s one thing missing that one might expect from the first introduction to an otherwise obscure set of characters. The most famous Eternal is missing.
Where’s Thanos?
Yes, the very same Thanos who snapped half the universe into oblivion in Infinity Gauntlet (and more memorably on screen in Avengers: Infinity War) is actually a member of the Eternal race. And a member of their opposing force, the Deviants. It’s very complicated.
Spoilers for Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic’s The Eternals follow.

Very few actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seem to have a true grasp of their future in the franchise – how many interview snippets have we seen where they admit they genuinely have no idea if they’ll return for another Marvel project or not? – but Tom Hiddleston was told that his God of Mischief was going to die at the start of Avengers: Infinity War by the film’s directors well ahead of time.
For two years, he had to keep Loki’s demise a secret from the world, even before he began working on Thor: Ragnarok.
“[Loki’s death] was the very first scene the Russos, Joe and Anthony, had [come up with],” Hiddleston revealed to Empire magazine. “They told me about it in person when I went in to meet [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] and he was walking me through the loose sketch of the story for Thor: Ragnarok. When Kevin Feige announced that “Baby-Sitters Club” actress Xochitl Gomez would officially portray the character of America Chavez in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” comic fans were thrilled. But as for the wider world, there was a lot of confusion. Who was America Chavez? What does her character add to a film that already includes big Marvel characters like Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch?
If you’re one of the people asking those above questions, we’re here to help school you on this awesome superhero you probably have never heard of. Aside from a short-lived 2017 solo series, America has mostly been a side character in comics like “A-Force,” “Ultimates,” and “West Coast Avengers.” So it’s not surprising that a lot of people haven’t heard about her. But it seems like Marvel is finally letting her have the spotlight, and we’re betting she’s going...

On Friday, word got out that Xochitl Gomez (of Netflix’s Babysitter’s Club) was joining Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the sequel to Marvel’s trippiest pre-Endgame movie. And with a title like that, and the presences of Marvel’s foremost reality bender, the internet collectively gasped “America Chavez!” together. But who is she? And why is she such an obvious addition to the cast of Doctor Strange 2?
“Ms. America” Chavez is a relatively recent addition to Marvel canon. She was introduced by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta in 2011’s Vengeance. She was raised by her two mothers in a utopian pocket dimension. Her moms both appeared to die closing black holes that threatened her city, and inspired by their heroism, she abandoned her reality for the multiverse.
When she arrived on the main Marvel Earth, she joined the Teen Brigade and fought, among others, a teenage Loki.

The Eternals are back! From the thought-provoking minds of Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribić comes a brand new vision of Jack Kirby’s classic Marvel creation in Eternals #1. Says Gillen:
I said if I was ever to do a book again at Marvel, it would have to be something I’ve never done before. This is exactly that. This is me teaming up with literally my favourite artist of the epic, taking one of those lightning-storm Kirby visions and re-making it to be as new as the day it was forged. While Esad makes whole worlds on the page, I’m applying all the skills I’ve developed when I was away. It’s a lot. It’s everything. There’s enough scale packed in here that I believe that when you look at the comic, you’ll see the pages slightly bulge. Essentially “Eternal” has to mean “never going...

Kieron Gillen is coming back to Marvel, and his new project is a really big deal.
The Eternals are simultaneously Jack Kirby’s weirdest and most straightforward creations, and with them coming to the big screen in February, bringing them back to the comics makes a ton of sense. Pairing Gillen with Esad Ribic shows Marvel is not messing around with it.

To use the words of prophet and frequent convention attendee Hunter S. Thompson, when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. This year, the professional weirdness of Comic-Con has taken a twist, as the four-day event will take place exclusively online.
To their credit, organizers are trying to replicate the commercialized fan-friendly confines of the San Diego Convention Center as much as possible: there is the traditional souvenir book featuring a pretty sweet drawing of Ray Bradbury on a T. Rex on the cover that is available for free .pdf download (and featuring click-through advertisements!), and you can print your own badge (sponsored by Amazon Prime Video!) to wear as you sit in front of your screen at home. The Comic-Con homepage also will take you to an online Exhibit Hall, where there will be interactive exhibits and events offered by vendors.

More than six weeks after comics ceased shipping because of Covid-19 disruptions to production and distribution, Diamond Distributors, the former monopoly that once distributed all single issues to shops around the country, has announced that they’re back. May 20th sees the return of new single issue comics from Image, Boom!, Marvel, Dark Horse and others to comic shops.
From the looks of the shipping list, the first few weeks will be releasing at about half speed, with smaller-than-usual releases from all companies. But May 20th will be the first semi-normal New Comic Book Day in almost two months, with some high profile releases – the first issue of The Ludocrats, the long-awaited raunchy space fantasy from Kieron Gillen and The Spire’s Jeff Stokely from Image Comics; the last issue of DCeased: Unkillables; and the zero issue of Marvel’s big spring (now summer) Skrull/Kree/Krakoa crossover Empyre among others.

The world may be upside down, but the Hugo Awards are forever! The Hugos are the longest-running fan-voted awards in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, first bring presented in 1953. The awards are generally given out during the World Science Fiction Convention, which is in a different host city every year. Sadly, the 78th Worldcon, aka CoNZealand, set to take place in (you guessed it) New Zealand, will have to be virtual this year. The Hugo ceremony will therefore also take place online.
Today, CoNZealand announced the finalists for this year’s Hugos, voted on by 1,584 people, who submitted 27,033 nominations. Those who were members of last year’s Worldcon, An Irish Worldcon, and members of this year’s Worldcon, CoNZealand, were eligible to vote, however, only CoNZealand members will be able to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners. Star Wars has finally given the heroes of Rogue One the recognition they deserve by sending Luke Skywalker off on a quest to uncover the truth about their suicide mission.
Some tend to think that Rogue One was just a play on the age-old plot hole involving the destruction of the original Death Star because of its strange and wacky exhaust port weakness. Still, the premise was promising enough to greenlight a production, but no one imagined that Gareth Edwards’ pic would turn out to be such a huge hit with fans and critics alike, not to mention a box office beast by grossing more than $1 billion despite being a spinoff adventure.
While people continue to celebrate the story of Jyn Erso and her sacrifice to spark the flames of rebellion, we can’t help but notice that she had more potential and it was a waste to see her go out like that.

The convoluted matter of the ancestry of Anthony Edward Stark, the hero formerly known as Iron Man and currently operating under the codename Mark One, could fill an entire season of paternity episodes of The Maury Povich Show. The details of Tony’s increasingly entangled lineage have been revealed to be a succession of half-truths and outright lies, and now it seems that the devil is not only in the details, but he’s also slithering along a branch of Tony’s family tree.
The oversized 31st issue of Jason Aaron’s current Avengers series presents a story titled “The Last Temptation of Anthony Stark,” a name appropriately inspired by Martin Scorsese’s 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ, in which another piece of the Golden Avenger’s twisted backstory is revealed. Tony describes the night he saw “the face of the Devil” as a nine-year-old child during a demonic ritual involving his parents.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a young slave boy was prophesied to bring balance to the Force and grew up to become one of the most powerful Sith lords ever to wield a plasma blade. After the destruction of the Death Star at the end of 1977’s Star Wars, retroactively subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope, Anakin Skywalker, by then known as Darth Vader, was demoted and set out on a personal mission to find the fighter pilot who destroyed the Empire’s deadliest superweapon with a single improbable shot. In pursuit of that goal, he traveled to the Kallidahin asteroid Quarantine World III, and it’s there that he crosses paths with a rogue archeologist by the name of Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra.

Tom Hiddleston’s about to star in his own vehicle as the fan favorite God of Mischief in Disney Plus’ upcoming Loki TV show, but there’s ever-growing speculation that other versions of the shapeshifting trickster will appear in the series, as well. In the comics, for instance, Thor’s brother has also taken on the form of Lady Loki and Kid Loki.
Well, a new casting call may be hinting at the coming of the latter in the Loki show. Insider Charles Murphy has got hold of a couple of character breakdowns for an unknown Marvel Studios project, which he deduces must be Loki due to the uncertain shooting dates and the nature of the characters. The two roles are both for child actors, one male the other female. Both must be British, too, and the description for the boy sounds a lot like it could match up with Kid Loki,...

Marvel's main Star Wars book is relaunching with Charles Soule and Jesus Saiz at the helm!
Marvel has been going through a bit of a deck-clearing with its Star Wars comics of late, leading many to wonder what the company was setting up. Now we know: announced at Nycc, 2020 will see a relaunch of the main Star Wars title, which will now be set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Veteran comic writer and novelist Charles Soule has been tapped to write the series.
