Jenny Spell was rehearsing for her Florida high school’s production of The Sound of Music in 2014 when she started feeling achy and fatigued.
“I thought it was a common cold,” Jenny, now 18, tells People. “During show season, there are lots of nasty germs spreading around and I thought I could beat it, but it just got worse and worse.”

American independent filmmaker Ted V. Mikels died yesterday at his home in Las Vegas after an unspecified “long illness,” according to The Las Vegas Review-Journal. While Mikels filmed a Brylcreem commercial with Joe Dimaggio and a promo reel for Chris Rock, he will be best remembered by fans of cult cinema, sci-fi and horror thanks to films such as The Black Klansman, Girl In Gold Boots, and The Astro-Zombies. He was 87.
Mikels was born Theodore Mikacevich in St. Paul Minnesota. As a youth, Mikels dabbled in photography and acting, as well as performing magic, acrobatics, and fire-eating. He discovered filmmaking when he began shooting his own performances. “I figured out that you have to move the camera around to get different angles, and then you have to edit the film when you’re done,” the director told Unitshifter in 2008.

Will 'Independence Day: Resurgence' be this year's 'Jurassic World' - or this year's 'Tron: Legacy'?
When Independence Day arrived in theaters in the summer of 1996, the monument-destroying blockbuster was a genuine box office phenomenon, grossing over $300 million domestically and $800 million worldwide by the end of its run. Unfortunately for the coffers of distributor 20th Century Fox, a sequel to the film never materialized -- at least until now, with the extremely-belated followup Independence Day: Resurgence slated to hit theaters next Thursday (sans the original film's breakout star Will Smith). The question now is, can the sequel to one of the '90s biggest hits make an impact in the overcrowded marketplace of 2016 the way Jurassic World managed last summer? Or will its performance be closer to that of Tron: Legacy, which failed to match the heights some had predicted when it hit theaters in 2010? After surveying three box office experts for their thoughts on Resurgence’s box office potential, the answer appears perhaps grimmer than...

The Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum in NYC is baffled over the recent theft of 2 shrunken heads and a Joe Dimaggio bat -- and now it's offering up a cash reward to catch the crooks. The bat was from the Yankee great's historic 56-game hitting streak -- and the heads are from an Amazon tribe, which was probably on a streak too. Employees noticed the items were gone Wednesday, and police have no leads right now,...

It's unclear exactly when Mantle signed the ball, but the people at Steiner Sports tell us Mantle signed it right after spilling a drink on Dimaggio at some sort of event back in the day. The film boasts an all-star cast, and is co-produced by Oscar nominee Anne Archer. The excellent character actor Michael Nouri, the steady Christopher McDonald and the very funny Katherine Lanasa are joining forces with newcomers Jeremy Sumpter and Jillian Murray. The odyssey of a young hot prospect and two gambling legends – based on a true story – are teed up to create a viable comedy about colorful characters, the essence of the links and who-will-outdo-who on the fairway and in the rough of life.

"The Battered Bastards of Baseball," a documentary by siblings Chapman and Maclain Way, manages to be many things at once: an affectionate ode to their grandfather, a distinctive snapshot of a noble sports experiment and a bittersweet glimpse at the possibilities of the many ways in which the game of baseball can be experienced. The filmmakers tell the story of their grandfather, Bing Russell, the Hollywood character actor who would go on to become the owner of the Portland Mavericks — the only independent team in the league during its existence. Russell's venture into baseball was met with raised eyebrows, but through the testimony of friends and family (including his son, Kurt Russell), he was born for it. Raised under the mentorship of baseball legends such as Lefty Gomez and Joe Dimaggio, he was obsessed with both the game and acting. When an injury early in his career as a player curtailed his career,...

Before anyone thought of The Bad News Bears, Slapshot, and Major League, there were the Portland Mavericks. In 1973, after professional baseball had abandoned the Oregon city, Hollywood actor Bing Russell — Deputy Clem on Bonanza — jumped at a chance to organize the only independent minor-league team in the country. Facing skepticism from a city that had been hoping for an actual major-league team and starting from scratch without any players, Russell held open tryouts for any has-been or never-will-be. “He put this team together of misfits, a ballclub made up a bunch of crazy individuals,” says Bing’s son, Kurt Russell,...

Saturday Night Live has been around for 39 years. Think about that for another sec. Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show for only 30 years. Both shows became late-night institutions, NBC breadwinners, and comedy king-makers. To be on Johnny Carson at the height of his reign was the ultimate for a young comedian, just as SNL’s Lorne Michaels has plucked comedians from obscurity and turned them into stars who can eventually carry their own movies, sitcoms, and late-night talk shows.
Saturday Night Live is still the ultimate testing ground for comedy, and that challenge can be especially intimidating to a green guest host.

Paul Simon's love affair with baseball is well-known, having recorded "Night Game" for his 1975 solo album "Still Crazy After All These Years" and referencing Yankees great Joe Dimaggio in the Simon and Garfunkel classic "Mrs. Robinson." We'll confess to not seeing the ending to "Pretty Little Liars" latest episode coming at all. But we definitely are not surprised in the least.
Ashley/Hanna/Mona
Hanna has the spectacularly bad idea that she's going to take the fall for her mom, claiming she actually killed Wilden in self-defense. And let's be real -- the only Liar who could remotely pull something like that off is Spencer.
After some excellent coaching from Mona -- the only one who has actually lived in a lie -- Hanna seems, well, still not ready. It seems like it's going to backfire miserably, so thankfully Caleb is there to rein Hanna in.
Then awesomely, it's Mona who walks sassily into the police station and confesses, providing the Liars with an enigmatic smile at the end. Mona rules all. Mona should be in every episode and the show should be retitled "Mona and Some Other Girls.

Arrow Season 1, Episode 12 ‘Vertigo’
Directed by Wendey Stanzler
Written by Wendy Mericle & Ben Sokolowski
Airs Wednesday nights at 8pm Et on The CW
Arrow‘s been a bit of a frustrating watch through its first season: for every moment of tautly shot action or great character interaction, there are melodramatic scenes filled with contrived plot twists, broad characterizations, and pointless antagonists. ‘Vertigo’ continues this trend, finally making some positive movement with a few characters, but completely swinging and missing when it came to the villain of the week material.
Like many freshman shows, Arrow is still searching for a tonal balance – at times, ‘Vertigo’ feels like a show confused. There are multiple moments in ‘Vertigo’ where it feels like the writers want to take things in a darker, grittier direction, but ultimately resign themselves to taking the shallower, less morally complex route.

Chicago – Mention “documentary,” in word association, and the next response is often “Ken Burns.” Burns brought a new voice to the documentary, and re-engineered the art form so much, that his technique is the “Ken Burns Effect.” His latest feature film, “The Central Park Five,” was co-directed by his daughter Sarah Burns and his son-in-law David McMahon.
The film is about a severe miscarriage of justice. In New York City in 1989, a female jogger was sexually assaulted in Central Park. Five men of color – Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Kharey Wise and Yusef Salaam – merely boys at the time, were in proximity of the incident and arrested for the crime. Despite no evidence that they committed the assault, confessions were coerced and used against them at a hastily assembled and highly publicized trial. When the inevitable guilty verdict was rendered, the boys were unjustly incarcerated during a crucial period in their lives.

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the iconic star's death, Garbus' doc features contemporary actresses (Viola Davis, Glenn Close and Lindsay Lohan among them) reading entries from Monroe's never-before-seen diaries and letters. Chicago – In the 1960s, network television became the ‘cool fire’ that families gathered around, and the array of trends and shows in that era had an odd but flavorful variety. Lee Meriwether (Catwoman from the 1966 ‘Batman movie), Kathy Garver (Cissy in the sitcom ‘Family Affair’) and Robert Colbert (ensemble player on the TV drama ‘The Time Tunnel’) represented those shows.
They appeared last March at ‘The Hollywood Show,’ a twice-a-year event in which fans can mingle, take photographs and get autographs from the celebrities – like the 1960s TV and film actors – who appear there. Since Mondays are just the worst, we here at Zap2it have decided to give your week a much-needed wake-up call with 10 TV teasers -- just to remind you that when the work day is over, your DVR waits to welcome you home.
This week, our Monday Kickstart includes scoop on "The Secret Circle's" dark magic twist, a "Hawaii Five-0" shower scene, and an "Awake" reality conundrum.
"The Big C": Something is rotten in the state of Minnesota, as Allison Janney drops by to kill Cathy, Adam gets caught back-dooring his girlfriend and Sean's phone sex job spills over into his actual life.
"Criminal Minds": We've known for a while that Paget Brewster is leaving the series at the end of the season, but we're kind of wondering if fans will be satisfied with how her character, Emily Prentiss, departs. We wouldn't want to say exactly how it goes down,...

Old sports writers (mainly Pardon the Interruption host and professional crank Tony Kornheiser) like to remind anybody listening that for most of the pre-World War II era, the biggest sports in America were baseball, boxing, and horse racing.
If you really want to get your 1930s on this weekend, you’ll have that chance: The baseball season is in full swing (Let’S Go Mets!), there’s a huge title fight in the boxing world between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto, and on Saturday evening, the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby begins.

We open this week, accompanied by Tom (with a brief initial assist from Sam) singing “Another Op'nin, Another Show” from Kiss Me Kate over scenes of the Bombshell cast and crew packing for out of town tryouts in Boston. Notably Ivy packs a photo of her awful mother. Rebecca takes a limo and the chorines meet up in Grand Central Station.
Christian Borle really nails the song and the arrangement incorporates phrases from “Let Me Be Your Star”. The number closes with Karen standing wide-eyed on the stage as tech crew scurry under Derek's direction. With the final notes fading a missed cue results in the theater being plunged into darkness. From out of the dark, we hear Derek: “Oh bloody hell!”
Meanwhile, Julia's at home lying next to Frank in bed, smiling.
Back in Boston Rebecca stands nervously on the bare stage. Derek enters and spots her there; she leaves hurriedly.

I know it's a musical, but this week's 'Smash' had more partner-swapping than a square dance. Am I crazy, or do Julia (Debra Messing) and Frank (Brian d'Arcy James) now have the most stable relationship out of all the couples on Smash? By the time the curtains dropped on the April 30 episode, both Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy's (Megan Hilty) love lives were in shambles as their boyfriends spent the hour getting handsy with other dames. During out-of-town tech rehearsals for Bombshell, Rebecca (Uma Thurman) had a mini-meltdown when she learned that her Joe Dimaggio had dropped out of the show; and with so little time before opening night, there was only one thing to do: bring back Michael (Will Chase). In a surprising show of sensibility, Julia threatened to quit Bombshell if Michael re-entered the fold, only to have Frank and Leo encourage her to stick with it!

Smash Preview: Bombshell Heads to Boston. Plus, Will Michael Return?
Rebecca Duvall has caused a lot of disruptions since she arrived on Smash. Her recent friendship and comments to Karen caused the ingenue to fight with her live-in boyfriend, Dev. And her constant "suggestions" for the musical have caused no end of anxiety for Julia and Tom. Throw in her tardiness and lack of commitment and Derek is also annoyed with her. But when Ivy sung as a shadow Marilyn in the most recent episode, Rebecca recognized her as a threat and found herself a new target.
In the next episode of Smash, the show moves to Boston to test the musical. Derek does an about-face when he finds himself drawn to Rebecca which, of course, causes a lot of problems for Ivy. Karen is forced to examine her relationship when she reaches a critical juncture: choose between Dev and the musical.

I don't really have the heart to review this week's new Smash episode at length because it was surprisingly terrible and I don't want to pee on the news that Smash has been renewed for a second season. That's good news even if we're getting kind of worried about the show's absolute refusal to let Megan Hilty be the star because they want it to be Katharine McPhee. McPhee is decent enough as an actress but too bland to carry the show. What's more the writers decided that Karen "couldn't 'play the sex' " as an actress and yet in every single number McPhee performs she's all seductress beauty-posing. Weird.
The schizo episode even had room for a Grease 2 like number
Grace Gummer -- one of Streep's two doppelganger actress daughters -- guest starred as Eileen's do-gooder daughter but the plotlines were so all over the place (and the scenes...

We cover Smash each week. Are you watching?
Bernadette dreams of stardom for Megan Hilty... sort of.
In last night's episode Eileen (Anjelica Huston) presented her workshop of "Marilyn The Musical" to potential investors but though no one literally broke a leg, things went wrong. The building had major heat problems souring the mood. Ivy (Megan Hilty) was plagued by her insecurity and distracted by her legendary showbiz mother Lee Conroy (very special guest star Bernadette Peters. Yes!), Karen (Katharine McPhee) fell during a big number distracting focus from Ivy. Julia (Debra Messing) and Michael's (Will Chase) affair came to a tearful end after Julia realized her son knew.
The building heat made the investors uncomfortable and immediately we're smelling blood. Who gets blamed? The show dangled more "star" rivals for Hilty (Uma Thurman will appear in 5 upcoming episodes) including Sutton Foster and Scarlett Johansson. And in a sharply acted gutpunch moment,...

So, the workshop happened. And Michael (Will Chase) is out as Joe Dimaggio. (Bye-bye, Michael. No more sneaking kisses with Julia in plain sight.) He wasn’t gelling with the show — “Marylin: The Musical” that it, not Smash — and he had to go. His performance was suffering from the torrid affair. And the writing process itself had become stifled since Julia’s head wasn’t in the game. But she’s more important than Michael so he was shown the door.
(And frankly, the scene where Julia sits in for Ivy as Michael goes over lines was pretty dumb — and pretty on the nose. So, an upside is that we’ll never have to see a moment like that again.)
Anyway, most of the episode not involving the workshop is devoted to Ivy (Megan Hilty) and her Broadway diva mom played by Bernadette Peters (for you non-theatre folks, she was...

Smash destroyed a childhood memory of mine with last night's episode. Well to be fair it's not really Smash's fault. See, with Bernadette Peters guest starring this week I'd been fondly recalling seeing her perform “Music Music Music” on The Muppet Show. But when I searched online for the clip, I couldn't find it. That's because she didn't sing “Music Music Music” on The Muppet Show. Teresa Brewer did. So for thirty years I've been fondly recalling something that never existed. It's jarring.
Anyway, we're one day before the workshop and we open on The Most Repulsive Pairing In Show Business, Michael and Julia, holding hands on a public sidewalk. The way you do when you're carrying on a secret affair. Thankfully Eileen and Derek approach before I get too nauseated.
Upstairs in the rehearsal space it's sweltering. Ellis informs the cabal that the super told him the boiler's acting up.

Finally, the darn workshop is here. But first Julia and Michael Swift secretly hold hands on the street, rudely interrupted by Derek and Eileen who are also on their way to rehearsal. It’s the day before the workshop and Derek is crabby. He must be nervous. Oh, and there’s a problem with the heat in the rehearsal building. It’s like 100 degrees in there. Michael and Julia get frisky in the hallway and are caught by a none to happy Tom,...

Freddie Prinze Jr.
Mmmmm, Freddie Prinze Jr. I could think about tugging on Fred from Scooby Doo's ascot with my mouth for hours on end. In a nightmare situation, this act would pull off Fred's "mask," and he'd be revealed as an angry carnival owner. He wouldn't gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for my meddling hormones. Rawr. Let's talk about March 8, kids!
1911: The first International Women's Day is held! Sounds like a great Maxim photo shoot!
1959: Groucho, Harpo, and Chico Marx film their last TV appearance together. Meanwhile, Zeppo Marx huffs in the audience and pouts that he's more commercial than Chico, and Gummo Marx sits at home and gets his tongue stuck in the toaster or something.
1976 and 1977: Freddie Prinze Jr. and James Van Der Beek are born, respectively. If you could only attend one of their birthday parties, whose would you pick?...

A review of tonight's "Smash" coming up just as soon as my mother sets me up for a date at a steak house... After "Smash" hit an early low with last week's episode featuring barefoot karaoke, lots of Ellis and the most whitebread Joe Dimaggio in filmed history, the series put itself back on firmer footing with "The Cost of Art." The show still has many problems — and a lot of the material involving Karen in particular annoyed me — but at least this episode dove headfirst into the kinds of stories and conflicts it should be dealing with if...

We open this week with Ivy riding on top of Derek in bed. Sweetie, you already got the part, you can stop banging the director. When they're done she wonders if maybe they could get together sometime and actually work on the role. His response of “That's all we're doing, darling” somehow doesn't lead her to slap his face and roll off him. He calls it a joke and promises to set up a rehearsal time.
Eileen is selling off her jewels. She spots a pair of earrings that the jewelry store clerk says were inspired by a pair Marilyn wore in The Seven Year Itch. For fifty bucks Eileen has to have them.
Karen meets Derek for drinks. He explains that with the show being in such an unfinished state they had to go with Ivy because of her greater experience. Karen makes like she's happy to have landed...

Smash Preview: Ivy Gets Jealous, Nick Jonas Guest Stars & Karen Performs "Rumor Has It"
This week's all new episode of Smash focused on a few story arcs. First, there was the search for an actor to play Joe Dimaggio in the Marilyn musical. The executives really wanted Michael Swift to play Joe in the workshops, but Julia was hesitant about it from the beginning. Why? Well, she finally told Tom that five years ago she and Michael had had an affair and now she's uncomfortable with the possibility of working with him again. But it looks like Julia's going to have to figure out a way to deal with it, because Michael secured the role.
Derek asked Karen to be in the ensemble for the musical, which she accepted. But she was clearly uncertain about her future because the workshop pay was terrible and she might have to miss a lot of shifts at work.

Previously on "Smash": "You're a waitress." "What about the adoption?" "You got it! You're Marilyn!"
Presented without commentary, the most absurd, comical, self-serious and/or humorless moments from episode three, "Enter Mr. Dimaggio."
1. Derek and Ivy's sexy time.
2. "I'd really like to get together sometime and work on her."
3. "I'll have my assistant call you and put it in the book."
4. "Do you think he gave me the part because I slept with him?"
5. "You got the part. You got. The part."
6. "Life is long. Theater is longer."
7. "We're Brits, that's what we do."
8. "How's this?" [Kiss] "What movie are we doing now?" "'Gone With the Wind,' baby."
9. "He's doing that Bruno Mars show."
10. That Bruno Mars show.
11. "Well, apparently he's a huge baseball fan."
12. "I think it sounds amazing."
13. "It's only a workshop! All I need is $200,000."
14. "I don't know if I'm ready for that."
15. Ellis and his friends.

The most interesting thing in this episode happened between Julia and Eliss. (Although I also enjoyed the scene between Dev and Derek, our two Brits). We’ll get to that in a bit, first we’ll break things down by storyline. This episode wasn’t as jam-packed as the first two episodes, and there’s not as many flashy numbers. It’s a different tone than the first two as well, not in a bad way.

Smash Sneak Peeks: Karen Joins the Ensemble; Ivy & Derek's Affair is Exposed
Last week's episode of Smash ended with a somewhat unexpected development. Despite the show pushing Katharine McPhee's Karen as its star, Megan Hilty's Ivy won the role of Marilyn, at least for the workshop portion. Of course, none of this is necessarily permanent so it's very likely that the girl playing Marilyn may change in the future. But right now Megan is flying high as the star of the show.
What will happen to Karen? Well, Derek will be approaching her about a part in the ensemble, as we can see in the trailer for tonight's Smash below. Who wants to bet that Ivy will feel threatened with Karen still hanging around?
Plus, Tom and Julia will learn about Ivy's recent dalliance with Derek. Tom is upset about the whole situation, worried that Derek might be taking advantage of his friend,...

Where have you gone, Joe Dimaggio? Nowhere, according to Smash.
On tomorrow night's new episode, Marilyn: The Musical will start the casting process for its star's most famous love interest, though the leading contender for the role will cause a major problem for Julia. Elsewhere, Karen returns to to Iowa to attend a baby shower; while Eileen's ex-husband does all he can to shut down production.
