In the ever-evolving landscape of television where reboots are normalized, Mr. and Mrs. Smith emerges as a refreshing take on established material. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and helmed by co-creator Francesca Sloane, the series was highlighted at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event, where the duo delved into the creative process behind the innovative adaptation.
The Prime Video series follows two strangers who are recruited by a mysterious organization to act as married spies named John and Jane Smith. This setup paves the way for high-stakes espionage entangled with evolving personal dynamics.
As Erskine put it on the panel, “The couple must work through missions as their espionage skills, and developing relationship, are put to the test as they try not to get killed in the process.”
One might wonder how Erskine and Glover fostered believable chemistry on screen. Erskine, on the panel with Sloane, shared a pivotal moment.

Emma Stone became the lucky 13th two-time Best Actress Oscar champ with her recent win for “Poor Things.” And she could well be adding an Emmy to her awards collection for her leading role in Showtime’s idiosyncratic drama series “The Curse.”
“The Curse,” created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, follows a newly married couple (Stone and Fielder) who host an HGTV show while trying to conceive a baby and navigate a curse. Sure the series is rich in cringe comedy that is hard to tear your eyes from even if you watch through your fingers. But it is also intelligent, dark and surprisingly moving. Parent introduced the idea of a ‘Son of Kong’ movie, sparking Wingard’s interest. Over the subsequent two years, he mulled over the concept. When crafting “The New Empire,” Wingard delved into how...

When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.
Beyond that, the series had its premiere delayed repeatedly,...

You can finally put your mind at ease knowing why a sequel to this classic romantic comedy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, starring two renowned actors, who later became a real-life couple, was never made.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt appeared as Jane and John, two highly skilled assassins posing as an average suburban couple, in Doug Liman’s 2005 flick. The dramatic real-life romance between its two stars made this 20th-century Fox film famous—or infamous, perhaps (for the offscreen romance headlines). The Smiths were thrown into an unexpected adventure when they found out that they were both spies and had been given orders to kill each other because they worked for different agencies.

In 2010, Jolie disclosed that attempts had been made by “people” to reunite her and the actor (whom she would later marry in 2014) for a sequel to the 2005 movie.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the drama field, which has lots of open slots.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve saved the drama long enough. To misappropriate a classic line from one of my favorite comedies for purposes of this column: Are we having fun yet? Once home to “Succession,” “Better Call Saul” and “The Last of Us” among other bangers, this year’s drama category feels somewhat lighter by comparison. There is no real frontrunner, at least in the way we’ve been used to here, so that leaves “The Crown” — three years removed from its Emmy sweep but with a demonstrably less-loved season — and “The Morning Show” at the top of the predictions charts. Sure? I could...

I love a twisted party-horror flick like Talk to Me, Bodies Bodies Bodies, or the incredibly underrated +1 (aka Plus One but not the Jack Quaid and Maya Erskine movie), which might explain my adoration of Greg Jardin’s It’s What’s Inside. You might recognize the title for its astounding $17 million sale to Netflix out of Utah’s Sundance Film Festival, which is money well spent for the streamer. Jardin writes, directs, and edits a shifty yet cleanly conveyed science fiction thriller that feels akin to the functional simplicity of Shane Carruth’s Primer meets a boozy [redacted as per filmmaker and studio wishes]. Filmmakers who’ve tackled similarly fantastical concepts have stumbled over needlessly complicated narratives, while Jardin focuses on digital-age comedics and dire consequences that entertain with ease.

Seven years ago, Donald Glover won his first two Emmys, Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing for “Atlanta.” While he missed out on nominations last year for the final season of his FX series — he did receive a writing bid for “Swarm” — Glover is back in the hunt this cycle with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Inspired by the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film of the same name, the spy series is competing in drama, which means Glover could become just the second man and third person to win lead Emmys in comedy and drama.
Carroll O’Connor is thus far the only male performer to have achieved this, having pocketed a record-setting four Best Comedy Actor Emmys for “All in the Family” in 1972 and three in a row from 1977-79 before adding a Best Drama Actor statuette for “In the Heat of the Night” in 1989. Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2 is likely because of how successful the first season was. Remakes are the hottest commodity right now, and with Twilight and Harry Potter in the works, it isn’t a surprise that the iconic 2005 film of the same name that brought Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt together got the same treatment. The remake is worth a watch, with Atlanta creator Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane creating the Prime Video series. Like the movie, the series follows spies Jane and John on secret missions before they turn against each other. The spy American TV series starring Glover and Maya Erskine is entertaining, ranking as one of Amazon’s top five

The Prime Video series, Mr & Mrs Smith, is loosely based on the hit 2005 film of the same name. With a more detailed storyline and a longer format, the series follows the married life of two spies who try to navigate the complexities of their new relationship and how emotionally and physically draining it can be. The fact that they are working for a secret organisation, which eventually pits them against each other, makes the story much more enjoyable. In this story version, John and Jane, played by Atlanta’s Donald Glover and PEN15’s Maya Erskine, are secret agents on...

Netflix’s Griselda spent a second week as the top streaming title in the United States, according to Nielsen. It was one of three shows to snag more than a billion minutes of watch time for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith also had a solid start for Amazon’s Prime Video, coming in just below the billion-minute mark. HBO’s True Detective also joined the rankings as it reached the midpoint of its fourth season.
Griselda, starring Sofia Vergara as the notorious drug lord, grabbed 1.73 billion minutes of viewing for the week, up about 9 percent from the previous seven days. The other two billion-minute shows were Young Sheldon (1.31 billion minutes on Netflix and Max) and Bluey (1.15 billion on Disney+).

“Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Amazon Prime Video’s TV remake of the film of the same name, had a strong opening weekend. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the series debuted in fourth place on Nielsen’s streaming rankings with 964 million minutes watched in its first three days of availability.
It ranked only behind “Griselda,” the Sofia Vergara-led Netflix miniseries that hit 1.7 billion minutes watched between Jan. 29 and Feb. 4, its first full week of availability, as well as “Young Sheldon” and “Bluey,” frequent chart-toppers that were watched for 1.3 billion and 1.4 billion minutes, respectively.

Exclusive: Mr. & Mrs. Smith is off to a promising start at Amazon.
The eight-episode series debuted on February 2 to become the No. 1 series on Prime Video in more than 130 countries. It is now one of the Top 5 new series debuts ever for Amazon in terms of total viewers in the U.S.
Amazon, as is typical, remains tight-lipped about the exact viewership data. Next month, there will likely be more numbers available via Nielsen’s streaming charts.
It is also noteworthy that Amazon is specifically touting U.S. viewership, since that is the audience that Nielsen measures. In the past, the streamer has often opted to promote global viewership, which is much harder to quantify without proprietary data from the company itself.
Because of this, it’s expected that the series will make an appearance on those charts, especially because all eight episodes were released at once, which gives it...

In honor of beloved NBC sitcom Community and its upcoming movie spinoff, let’s begin with some Remedial Chaos Theory. Without the release of a tepidly-received action comedy in 2005, you wouldn’t be reading this article right now.
That’s because if the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie-starring film Mr. and Mrs. Smith didn’t premiere 20 years ago, then there wouldn’t be a TV version starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine today. Amazon’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” TV series is one of the biggest television releases of 2024, as it stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, two beloved actors. But it wasn’t always those too. Now, Glover is shedding some light on what happened between them behind the scenes.

It’s a twist both title characters of the new Amazon Prime Video series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” might love. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-creator, writer, director, and star Donald Glover invoked the end of a marriage to describe his creative split from one-time “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge – months after Waller-Bridge similarly compared the dissolution of their relationship to a failed romantic union.
“It’s a divorce in a weird way,” Glover said. “You’re like, ‘Oh shit, this should have worked.’ And this is just me, being honest, but I think a good relationship is one where you don’t waver from the extremely uncomfortable. And I don’t know if we were ever going to get to a place where we could be completely brutal to each other.”

Donald shared with THR, “It’s a divorce in a weird way. You’re like, ‘Oh sh-t, this should have worked.’ And this is just me, being honest, but I think a good relationship is one where you don’t waver from the extremely uncomfortable. And I don’t know if we were ever going to get to a place where we could be completely brutal to each other.”
He continued, “It might’ve just been cultural.

Donald Glover Breaks Silence on Creative Split With Phoebe Waller-Bridge: ‘It’s Like a Real Divorce’
Donald Glover is opening up about his professional “divorce” from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, aka his original co-star in Amazon’s just-launched reboot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project back in 2021, seven months into development. The “amicable split” stemmed from the Fleabag auteur having a “different creative vision for the series” than Glover, who was co-creating it with both her and his onetime Atlanta collaborator Francesca Sloane. (The Mrs. Smith void was eventually filled with PEN15‘s Maya Erskine.)

When Donald Glover was first approached about the possibility of remaking Mr. & Mrs. Smith, he wasn’t exactly enthused.
“I don’t really do remakes,” he told his buddy, an exec at New Regency, which produced the 2005 original starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as married spies. Of course, he’d never actually seen the film, just the tabloid saga surrounding its stars, who’d later wed. In fact, Glover’s still convinced that was key to the project’s appeal. “When people are like, ‘I love this movie,’ I’m like, ‘What did you like?’ Not to say that the movie’s necessarily bad,” he says, “but I think it just had to do with the chemistry and what was happening between them.”
Donald Glover and Maya Erskine were photographed Jan. 29 at the Georgia Room in New York City.
Glover did eventually watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith, mostly out of curiosity.

New Regency is adding to its executive ranks, hiring Laura Delahaye to oversee the company’s growing TV slate.
Delahaye will be head of domestic television at New Regency, reporting to chairman and CEO Yariv Milchan and president of motion pictures and TV Natalie Lehmann. She joins the company after working as director of overall deals, U.S. and Canada, at Netflix.
“New Regency is one the most exciting companies in television today, with both a rich legacy and strong momentum thanks to its recent successes and compelling slate of upcoming series,” Delahaye said in a statement. “I look forward to building upon the division’s strong recent growth and expanding a library that includes some of the best works of the last few decades.”
