As part of our support for the launch of Tom Paton’s new film The Ascent on VOD, here’s an interview with actor and regular Tom Paton collaborator Toby Osmond, who appears in the film as Jack Ford.
The Ascent follows a group of mercenaries, who are sent to Eastern Europe in the middle of a civil war to retrieve intel. Shortly after the mission, the unit find themselves trapped on a never-ending stairwell; forced to climb or die. To survive, they must revisit their past sins if they ever want to get off.
The Ascent reminded me of Michael Mann’s The Keep, which was sort of his lost film…
To: I’ve heard people say that The Ascent reminds them of a cross between Ringu and Time…something, I get the Ringu reference because of the monster in our film, but I’ve not seen The Keep.

Hex Studios, the Scottish outfit behind genre features Lord of Tears, The Unkindness of Ravens and The Black Gloves have premiered a new show shining a spotlight on the work of up and coming genre talents. ‘Hex Presents’, currently available to watch on YouTube sees Hex Studios’ Lawrie Brewster introduce a series of horror feature films from rising talents in the genre.
First up is festival favourite, Egomaniac from director Kate Shenton. which tells the harrowing and hilarious tale of one young female director’s efforts to get her indie feature made. The refreshingly honest horror comedy was a huge hit on the festival circuit, gaining Kate an avid following and bringing her talents to the attention of Hex Studios, who picked up the title for distribution earlier this year.
Hex Studios is dedicated to providing a platform for promising indies in the genre, and this new endeavor is a big part of that plan.

Egomaniac is a new horror comedy from writer and director Kate Shenton, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Saturday 20th January. I got chance to ask Kate a few questions about how she came up with the concept for Egomaniac, how much of the film is based on her own experiences and having the film turned into a game.
What can we expect from Egomaniac?
Egomaniac is a dark comedy with a horror twist that’s very meta. It’s a feminist revenge film, set in the film industry with a surreal sense of humour. Very satirical based on personal experiences. I have always said I will not go into what’s true and not true, but the line between fact and fiction is really blurred in this film. I think this film is for anyone that has ever made a film or endeavoured...

But maybe you're like David, whose commitment to his calling might have driven away his father, his girlfriend, job prospects ... but he knows he's meant to be a clown. UK filmmaker Kate Shenton, whose documentary On Tender Hooks looked at extreme body modification, and whose upcoming fiction feature Egomaniac looks at the horror film industry, is the brains behind the hilarious mockumentary Send in the Clowns, which is now available for all to watch after its festival run (full dicslosure, I programmed it for FrightFest). From the Press Release:

As for the films, we’ll bet you won’t suspect we are self-sustained! With no government help and some minor contributions from the city and the province, we’ll blast everyone away with a great programme once again! Thanks to our...

We're co-running the Viscera Film Festival, showing the best new short horror films directed by women, just like we did last year. Here's our 2011 lineup.
It's been pretty cut-throat. Out of over 80 submissions, we struggled and wept and co-director Shannon Lark and I beat each other up over what our final lineup would be. In the end, we decided, only the best of the best could play, so we counted and recounted our judges tallies and agreed that again we'd show way too many films and have our fest run way too long.
These films are just too good to not screen. We couldn't eliminate any of them. I have to be honest: I love every film on this list. We're got some Us premieres that we're especially excited about! The 2011 Viscera Film Festival Films are:
The Party’S Over by Gigi Romero
