Valentine's Day means different things to different people. For some, it's a joyous celebration of the people in their lives. For others, it's a painful reminder of loves lost and broken hearts. Then, for the rest of us, it's a springboard for silly slashers about lovesick killers. Second only to Christmas, Valentine's Day might well be the most popular holiday in slasher flicks. The innate tension between treacly intimacy and gonzo gore is too good an opportunity to pass up, and for time immemorial, creatives have merged both love and fear in increasingly twisted ways.
Some recent editions to the horror canon, like "Bones and All" and "Spring," while not strictly speaking Valentine's Day-themed, are deeply romantic, reminding audiences of how perfectly the two disparate emotions can coalesce into something amazing. Here, we'll be looking at horror movies specifically about the most romantic day of the year. From old school slashers to creepy,...

Jason Isaacs and Nazanin Boniadi in ‘Hotel Mumbai.’
The timing could not have been worse: Hotel Mumbai opening in Australian cinemas the day before the horrific slaughter of innocents at two mosques in Christchurch.
Anthony Maras’ thriller based on the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai is a superbly-made film but the subject was not something that many Australian cinemagoers wanted to experience amid the shock and grief over events in Christchurch.
Released by Icon, the film co-written by Maras and John Collee, starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher and Tilda Cobham-Hervey, opened in second spot, taking $979,000 on 268 screens and $1.06 million including previews.
To be fair to the producers, Basil Iwanyk, Gary Hamilton, Mike Gabrawy, Julie Ryan, Andrew Ogilvie and Jomon Thomas, that is not a bad result and receipts may well build on word of mouth – but my guess is the total would have been at least $500,000 higher...

A just-released trailer for next Thursday’s episode of the Fox series Gotham shows the return of Jeremiah Valeska (guest star Cameron Monaghan), the malevolent grinning madman who seems locked in a dance of death with the entire city — but especially with the orphan son of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
Valeska’s character is one of the more intriguing elements of Gotham which is in its fifth and final season. The show’s creative team was reluctant early on to include the Joker in their prequel saga about Bruce Wayne’s life leading up to his adoption of the masked alias of Batman. They relented before the end of the first season when they brought in Valeska, the demented son of circus performers whose background and persona veer from the familiar Joker mythology (although that mythology changes so often and so dramatically that its a joke to consider anything as...

“Gotham” dropped a new trailer for the Fox drama’s Feb. 21 episode on Friday, revealing that (spoiler alert?) Cameron Monaghan’s Jeremiah Valeska is for sure The Joker. Yes, you’re shocked, we know.
Here’s the official description for next Thursday’s installment in the final season of the Batman prequel series, titled “Ace Chemicals,” which will feature Jeremiah’s “birth” into the famous villain who definitely no one already suspected he was:
Gordon races to uncover the criminal element threatening to end talks of Gotham’s reunification with the mainland. A very-much-alive Jeremiah (guest star Cameron Monaghan) returns and organizes a twisted recreation of the murder of Bruce’s parents, with the help of Jervis Tetch aka Mad Hatter (guest star Benedict Samuel) in the all-new “Ace Chemicals” episode of Gotham airing Thursday, Feb. 21 (8:00-9:00 Pm Et/Pt) on Fox.

On the one hand, I’ve been rather entertained by what Gotham‘s fifth and final season has offered thus far. But on the other, I’ve been waiting with bated breath to see all of the cool stuff teased in various trailers. I guess that’s to be expected when shooting wraps before the first episode has a chance to premiere.
One such thing I’ve been geeked for is that of the confrontation between Bruce Wayne and Jeremiah Valeska in the appropriately titled “Ace Chemicals.” In that episode, we can expect to see their feud build to a crescendo – and to possibly serve as the pivotal moment marking Jeremiah’s transformative experience.
But, until the big moment arrives, we can rely on this freshly released gallery of images to tide us over. As you begin to browse, notice how both the Mad Hatter and Ecco are there to...

Stripped-down creature feature “Sweetheart” stars Kiersey Clemons as a shipwreck survivor on an uninhabited island that unfortunately turns out to have one frequent, unfriendly, nonhuman visitor. The sparing glimpses of the scaly whatsis and near-complete lack of dialogue (to a point) make this a reasonably offbeat wade into a familiar Black Lagoon. But despite decent suspense, “Sleight” director J.D. Dillard’s good-looking second feature is a chiller that’s not quite original or stylish enough to be memorable.
Clemons’ Jenn washes onto her isle barely conscious, though in better shape than a fellow passenger (Benedict Samuel) on her storm-downed pleasure cruise, who quickly expires. The situation is dire, but the heroine proves resourceful, quickly figuring out how to spear-fish and make a fire. She also finds signs of prior habitation: A campsite whose vacationers oddly left their gear behind — and more disturbingly, an apparent group gravesite.

In a way, Gotham wrapping filming on its final season before the premiere episode had even aired presented a double-edged sword of sorts. On the one hand, it meant that spoilers would flood the internet like never before. But on the other, a variety of trailers hyped certain bullet points to come that gave us all one more reason to tune in each week with increased anticipation.
One such element I’ve been looking forward to seeing is anything involving Jeremiah Valeska. So far, he hasn’t received much screentime during season 5, instead being portrayed as this looming boogeyman. But in a matter of weeks, the producers will pay tribute to an iconic scene known to lovers of Batman comic books and movies alike – that being the Joker’s origin.
Now, even though it looks like the “Joker” name is still off limits for the series, we all know what it’s getting at.

‘Pimped’
David Barker’s psychological thriller Pimped, which explores what might happen if two men lured a woman who proved to be stronger, smarter and more cunning than them, won the Australian feature award at Monster Fest: The Homecoming.
Staged at Cinema Nova from November 22-25, the seventh edition of Monster Fest drew nearly 2,900 patrons, a record for the event.
The Golden Monster award for best feature went to director Jonas Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos, which is set in Oslo in 1987 and stars Rory Culkin as a teenager who forms the aptly-titled black metal band Mayhem with his equally fanatical mates. They begin burning down churches throughout the countryside and stealing tombstones for their record store, leading to violence. It has yet to find a local distributor.

The organisers of Monster Fest aim to parlay the brand into a theatrical distribution gateway for Australian and international genre films.
Monster Films has successfully trialed the concept with Mandy, Panos Cosmatos’ neo-noir horror movie which it sub-licensed from Madman Entertainment.
Next year the distributor will release Luke Sparke’s Occupation: Rainfall, a sci-fi thriller which stars Crazy Rich Asians’ Ken Jeong, Temuera Morrison, Dan Ewing, Stephany Jacobsen, Aaron Jeffery and Zac Garred.
Monster’s Grant Hardie developed a relationship with Sparke after staging sold-out special event screenings for Occupation.
“We want to turn the Monster Fest brand into a legitimate theatrical pathway with a cinema network consisting of as many locations as we can secure to build audiences,” Hardie tells If. “Genre films are under-represented in cinemas.”
While he has no titles lined up to release apart from the Occupation sequel, he is open to talking to producers.

If you’re a fan of the classic graphic novel Batman: The Long Halloween, then it looks like you may really dig what Gotham has in store for us for the remainder of season 4. In other words, if you’re one for supervillain team-ups, there’ll be a lot to love over the next few months.
In case you hadn’t heard, a recent indicator had been that of some comments made by executive producers John Stephens and Danny Cannon, saying that Jerome Valeska will soon be forming his own “Legion of Horribles.” Basically, he plans on uniting the more recognizable burgeoning supervillains under his own insane vision before spreading Arkham Asylum’s madness out into Gotham City at large.

As we begin the sprint toward Gotham‘s season finale, we need to brace ourselves for some returns to be made by major villains. Already, Jerome Valeska has made his presence felt, but based on what we’ve heard, some of the most dangerous customers in the city may very well soon be united under his insane vision.
We already knew that Mad Hatter and Scarecrow would seemingly be among the first to sign up, and it looks like the dominoes will begin to fall on March 29 with “A Dark Knight: One of My Three Soups.” And while we aren’t certain if said episode will appeal to the soup connoisseurs among you, the promo images released by the network hint at Jervis Tetch being up to his old tricks.
So, as we peruse the accompanying gallery, it appears as though baby steps may be taken in forming Jerome’s Legion of Horribles.

Gotham is a show that has a lot to live up to. We all know Batman, but to take the focus and push it onto James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) instead, and make Bruce Wayne a lesser character is a brave move. Looking at Gotham: The Complete Third Season, we now have a show that is finding its confidence, but also risking overwhelming the audience in the very busy city of Gotham.
Working as a bounty hunter, Gordon is now tracking down the Indian Hills escapees. With Jervis Tetch (Benedict Samuel), The Mat Hatter threatening the city with a madness virus, and a shady organisation known as the Court of Owls strengthening their hold over the city, the battle for control of Gotham has never been so volatile.

Despite their wealth and social status. Thomas and Martha Wayne were victims of random violence in a city filled with such acts on an hourly basis. Wenham earlier directed a segment of The Turning, the 2013 Tim Winton anthology that saw a constellation of Aussie stars debut behind the lens, and...

Emily Barclay and Benedict Samuel in 'Ellipsis'..
In the first of a two-part interview, David Wenham talks to If about making his directorial feature debut,.'Ellipsis'..
Across a stellar career spanning 30 years, David Wenham had long wanted to make an experimental, improvisational film in which the story unfolds in the space of one night.
Wenham got his chance with Ellipsis, a low budget film he directed and co-wrote, which will have its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival.
Produced by Arenamedia.s Liz Kearney, the slice-of-life film follows Emily Barclay as Viv and Benedict Samuel as Jasper, who meet by chance and roam the city of Sydney, from bars, a park and a sex shop in Kings Cross, to Bondi.
In a remarkably tight schedule, the cast workshopped the script for three days, a collaborative effort between the two leads, Wenham and director.s assistant Gabrielle Wendelin. The shoot took just seven days,...
