Peacock’s movie Genie delivered a solid opening for Peacock during Thanksgiving week — big enough, in fact, to rank as the streamer’s biggest original film to date.
The holiday comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu premiered Nov. 22 on Peacock and drew about 405 million minutes of viewing time over its first five days, according to Nielsen figures (the full streaming top 10 charts for Thanksgiving week will be available later in December). It’s set to rank seventh among movies for that week, which typically sees a number of holiday favorites (a la Home Alone and Elf) re-enter the streaming charts.
The 405 million minutes of watch time for Genie is the equivalent of about 4.35 million complete showings of the 93-minute film (which is the now-codified standard for a “view” of a streaming movie or series).
Genie stars McCarthy as Flora, a genie who’s been trapped for more than 2,000 years inside an antique jewelry box.

Richard Curtis said he made sure to run his Tom Cruise joke in the new holiday fairytale comedy Genie by the action star.
In the film, Melissa McCarthy’s character genie Flora develops a major crush on Cruise after going to a movie theater for the first time and seeing him in a Mission: Impossible film. This leads her to cover her bedroom walls with posters of the actor, as well as get a sweatshirt featuring Cruise’s face as a Christmas present from her new friend Bernard (Paapa Essiedu).
In an interview with People magazine, published online Wednesday, the Love Actually writer said they definitely had to ask Cruise for permission before filming.
“I mean, we asked him through his people,” Curtis explained. “I’m lucky enough to know Tom a bit. He’s always been very sweet to me. And we worked on a film for a while,...

You have to really watch your language when hanging out with a genie. Especially a genie who can grant unlimited wishes. After all, it’s too easy to utter the words “I wish” when you don’t really mean them, and the result could be that you accidentally send someone directly to Hell. So please, please, be careful what you say.
If that warning seems a bit fanciful, then you haven’t seen the new holiday-themed Christmas movie premiering on Peacock. Genie features so many jokes revolving around characters carelessly uttering “I wish” only to have to quickly reverse themselves that the film seems more like a public service announcement than a would-be holiday classic.
Written by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill), the streaming film is a loose remake of Bernard and the Genie, a 1991 BBC television movie that he also scripted. You can’t blame...

This bafflingly bland offering wastes the talents of Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu – it’s as if they removed the laughs in case they offend
Screenwriter Richard Curtis is a cinema colossus with nothing left to prove: he reinvented the romcom with transatlantic classics like Four Weddings, Notting Hill and The Tall Guy; he re-energised charitable giving with Comic Relief; and even those of us who never signed up to Love Actually concede the dark power of the Emma Thompson-crying scene. But we really do not need this new Christmas film from him, an unremittingly awful, bafflingly terrible and defanged bit of seasonal gibberish: a fantasy comedy which forgets to put in gags and which cheats its own narrative rules. Watching it is like trailing around a year-round Christmas market in March.

It seems like no HBO Max series is safe from the wrath of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Last week it was announced by series showrunner Brig Muñoz-Liebowitz via Twitter that the recently canceled The Gordita Chronicles would be the next original series removed from HBO Max. Not long after, it was revealed that HBO Max would be canceling and removing other original titles before the end of the year.
The next casualty was the series Minx, which had not only been renewed for a second season back in May, but was also about to wrap production on season 2 this week. According to Deadline, production is set to finish as scheduled, with Lionsgate TV planning to shop both seasons of the series to other streaming services.
Next on the chopping block was the anthology series Love Life that starred Anna Kendrick in its first season and William Jackson Harper in the second.

There are more shake-ups at HBO Max as Joss Whedon‘s The Nevers and Sam Boyd‘s Love Life are set to be pulled from the streamer, along with the recently canceled HBO series Westworld. Now fans are wondering if The Nevers, which was scheduled to air the second half of its first season on HBO in 2023, will broadcast its remaining episodes on another platform. The back half of Season 1 was completed under new showrunner Philippa Goslett, following the exit of Whedon, who left the show before it debuted in Spring 2021. Meanwhile, the Anna Kendrick-led Love Life will have both its seasons pulled from HBO Max. The anthology rom-com series aired its first season in May 2020, with Season 2 premiering in October 2021. It marks the second Lionsgate-produced series to be canceled by HBO Max this week, as the comedy series Minx was also axed despite previously being renewed for...

HBO and HBO Max are becoming very unpredictable.
Ever since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, there have been plenty of controversial decisions from the higher-ups at the company.
If you thought Minx was the only cancellation this week, then we have bad news.
HBO Max has split up with Love Life, canceling the romantic anthology after two seasons.
The writing had been on the wall with the lack of updates following the Season 2 finale back in November 2021.
The first season was headlined by Anna Kendrick, while the second had William Jackson Harper at the forefront.
The series has also been pulled from HBO Max, meaning there's a chance fans will never get to rewatch the series again.
Sam Boyd, the creator and co-showrunner, reflected on the cancellation on Twitter.

Those wanting to rewatch several HBO shows have been blindsided by the news they will be removed from the service they’re available on.
It was revealed on Monday (12 December) that HBO Max would be removing several titled from its service.
The decision, which is spearheaded by the service’s owner, Warner Bros Discovery, followed the announcements that each show had also been cancelled.
Included in this cull are Minx, an acclaimed series starring New Girl actor Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick’s Love Life, and former HBO darling Westworld, which was cancelled earlier this year despite needing one more season to wrap the story up.
Meanwhile, The Nevers has also been cancelled midway through its first season, despite filming on part two having already been completed.

HBO Max is cleaning house again. After the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer removed over 60 titles from the platform without warning this August — many of which were originals developed for the service — a new batch of series are being prepped to be taken off in the next few days, sources have confirmed to IndieWire.
The most high-profile of these series is HBO’s “Westworld,” which was canceled this fall after falling ratings in Season 4. Other shows getting taken off include Victorian England sci-fi show “The Nevers” and rom-com anthology series “Love Life.” In a similar vein to the Lionsgate series “Minx,” the pulling of these shows effectively doubles as their cancellation announcement. According to sources, other less-high profile titles will be announced to leave the service in the next few days.
In addition, on December 9 Claudia Forestieri confirmed via Twitter that her series “Gordita Chronicles” would be taken off the platform soon.

When William Jackson Harper turns on his warm, steady charm, he proves an impossible actor to resist. Even when portraying a neurotic breakdown, as he did frequently as an ethics professor on “The Good Place,” or embodying someone who makes questionable decisions, as he does on “Love Life,” Harper imbues his characters with a grounded sincerity that shines through their darkest days. That “The Good Place” eventually bet the house on Harper’s ability to anchor the most significant romance in the universe came as no surprise, even as that romance threatened to swallow the entire series whole. Harper was simply that charismatic, justifying the gambit with every focused gaze and tender smile.

When “Love Life” premiered in May 2020, America had an orange-haired cartoon for a president, seemingly every citizen wanted a vaccine, and HBO Max was launching to direct competition from a one-month-old streamer called Quibi. All that has since changed, and Season 2 of Sam Boyd’s anthology series has, too. The creator is joined by new co-showrunners Bridget Bedard (“Transparent”) and Rachelle Williams (“Survivor’s Remorse”), who welcome William Jackson Harper as the season’s new lead. The pandemic only lingers around the periphery of his years-spanning search for a partner. And there’s no pressure on the season to prop up HBO Max as a worthwhile streaming investment, since a) everyone has already subscribed to keep up with Season 3 of “Succession,” and b) the mighty Quibi has been vanquished.
