The Academy Awards live telecast has always been a mixed bag, but of late it's been either depressing or outright disastrous. The 2021 ceremony was an unavoidably tentative affair due to the Covid lockdown, and not even the producing tandem of Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, and Jesse Collins, who evinced a welcome bit of cleverness by moving the show to Los Angeles' Union Station, could breathe life into the dour proceedings (which were also weighed down by the unexpected passing of Best Actor nominee Chadwick Boseman).
As for 2022, Will Packer's network-kowtowing broadcast — which featured such ignominies as below-the-line nominees receiving their Oscars prior to the official start of the show (as people were still being seated), a trio of ill-matched hosts and Will Smith slapping presenter Chris Rock for making a joke about his Jada Pinkett-Smith's alopecia — went down as the most ineptly produced ceremony since Rob Lowe belted out "Proud Mary" with Cinderella.

Exclusive: Prolific producer and actor DeVon Franklin has set up two new scripted development projects at BET+ under his overall deal with CBS Studios, which is the studio for both.
The first project, Played, is a comedy in which Franklin would star. The second project, Closure, for BET and BET+, is a family drama inspired by the life of baseball Hall-of-Famer Andre Dawson turned funeral home owner. Franklin would executive produce both projects via his Franklin Entertainment.
Written by Devon Shepard (The Ms. Pat Show), in Played, Franklin stars as a TV personality in the comedy which chronicles the trials of a dysfunctional dater.
Here’s the official logline: “What if the life of a dysfunctional dater is punctuated by his conscience being a fully-produced talk show hosted by real-life tv personality and producer DeVon Franklin? Every time our guy is faced with one of life’s many dilemmas, he...

TV producer Jesse Collins said there was some pressure following last year’s epic, Emmy-winning Super Bowl halftime show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and more, but working with Rihanna made the process easy.
“She’s a lot of fun, very cool, never stressed. Just like, ‘All right, I’m going to go do this real quick.’ The pressure never got to her. She just was in it from day one, and really warm and let everybody have fun with it,” Collins told The Hollywood Reporter moments after Rihanna blazed the stage Sunday at the State Farm Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
“I think there’s always pressure with this show,” added Collins, who also produced The Weeknd’s 2021 halftime show. “You work so hard, six months for 13 minutes. [This was] an opportunity to work with a global superstar and her re-entry into music.”

Rihanna hasn’t toured since 2016, but on Sunday during the Jay Z-produced spectacle that is the Super Bowl Lvii Halftime Show the Good Girl Gone Bad singer put on a tour de force.
Filling her less-than-15-minute set with an array of hits, floating platforms, club dance floor dynamics and spectacle, the second best-selling female artist of all time owned the field at State Farm Stadium with near pure superstar swagger.
Pushing the high-profile slot to new technological and Olympian heights, Rihanna was pure solo. With a catalog full of work with the likes of the aforementioned Jay-Z, Eminem and Drake over the decades, the “Umbrella” singer teased guest stars earlier this week, but it was all hype because when it came showtime, Rihanna did the job all on her own with only a legion of dancers as sidekicks in a performance that was totally 2023.

The Golden Globes officially make their return to broadcast TV on January 10 after scrapping its 2022 telecast while the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made internal reforms. Awards trackers and pundits seem ready to forgive and forget now that the HFPA has diversified its membership, as there’s been much buzz over what this morning’s nominees, announced live on NBC’s “Today” show, will look like.
The upcoming Golden Globes also marks new supporting actor and actress categories in television categories. See below for the full list of nominees.
NBC will be televising the 2023 Golden Globes awards show as part of a one-year agreement. Hosting the ceremony on January 10 (a Tuesday!) will be Emmy-winning comedian, actor, and filmmaker Jerrod Carmichael.
The HFPA welcomed 103 new voters this year, marking the first time voters based outside of the U.S. have been added to the voting pool. The makeup of the voters currently represents 62 different countries,...

After a year off the air following scandal, upheaval and reforms at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globe Awards will return to TV on Jan. 10. With the broadcast of the 80th edition of the ceremony, which will be hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael and produced by awards show vet Jesse Collins, the HFPA is essentially auditioning for its future, given that its (recently renegotiated) deal with longtime partner NBC expires at night’s end. At a time when all awards shows are struggling to find audiences (the SAG Awards won’t even be televised this year), and the industry is still figuring out how it feels about the HFPA’s efforts to reform itself (few stars publicly acknowledged their nominations, but several studios noted them in advertisements and on billboards), what should one expect from the Globes? It’s hard to say.

While many questions are swirling around the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony, the telecast will air Jan. 10 on NBC/Peacock.
The nominations are a solid mix of big-budget entertainments, and smaller, auteur-driven projects that dominate the cinema side, with an eclectic roster of content being celebrated on television. The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. has stated that all guests and presenters will be appearing in person, in lieu of virtual appearances or satellite arrangements. Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael will be hosting the event, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary at the Beverly Hilton ceremony. Eddie Murphy, a previous Globe winner and six-time nominee, will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award, while Ryan Murphy will be presented with the Carol Burnett Award.

Moments after this year’s Golden Globe nominees were announced, show producer Jesse Collins sat down with The Hollywood Reporter and teased the big night by saying “it’s going to have a fresh look,” as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s biggest night rebounds from controversy. “It’s going to be glamorous and fun, lots of champagne will be flowing and a good time will be had by all.”
In a normal year, that would be a predictable outcome, especially inside the halls of the Beverly Hilton hotel that has long hosted the Globes and the explosion of industry supported afterparties. Netflix, Amazon, HBO, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros. (with InStyle), Fox, and others have all hosted massive afterparties in years past, and the weekend itself proved to be one of the busiest of awards season, with annual fetes like the BAFTA Tea Party, Indie Spirit Awards brunch and agency parties.

The first string of presenters for the 80th Golden Globe Awards were unveiled this morning and that includes Ana de Armas, Ana Gasteyer, Billy Porter, Colman Domingo, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Natasha Lyonne, Nicole Byer, Niecy Nash-Betts, Quentin Tarantino and Tracy Morgan. As the Hollywood Foreign Press Association looks to get back on its feet after weathering diversity controversies, it has been buzzed that personal reps wouldn’t allow their clients to get back on stage. However, as the HFPA has expanded its ranks with journalists of color, it appears that the industry is pivoting in its attitude toward the organization.
De Armas is nominated at the Globes for Best Actress Feature Drama for her turn in Blonde, Curtis is up for Supporting Actress Feature for Everything Everywhere All at Once, while Nash-Betts is nominated for Supporting Actress TV Limited Series/Movie for Dahmer -Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
