So much of modern music feels like it was created by a computer algorithm to appeal to as many people as possible while having little artistic value. Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism is the antithesis of that. The album’s producer discussed his history of working with avant-garde musicians and why he brought the same energy to working with the “Levitating” singer.
The connection between Dua Lipa’s ‘Radical Optimism’ and Charli Xcx
Danny L Harle is a songwriter and producer who has worked with artists such as Charli Xcx and Rina Sawayama. More recently, he was one of the producers of Lipa’s Radical Optimism. During a 2024 interview with Grammy.com, he was asked if he approached Radical Optimism differently than his work with underground singers.
“Not at all,” he replied. “My approach to this stuff, especially these days, is that I can just do my thing. I’m...

The cinematic journey of Hiroyuki Sanada and his contribution to the fusion of Western and Eastern storytelling have been nothing short of remarkable. Fresh off the heels of his presence in John Wick: Chapter 4, Sanada’s Shōgun success has been a cultural touchstone. But does this success guarantee his quick return to the producer’s chair?
Sanada is involved as a producer and cast member of the acclaimed FX limited series. With a career as dynamic as the Japanese actor’s, his keen sense of storytelling speaks volumes. Indeed, his dedication to cultural integrity and his case-by-case approach to production roles serve as a deliberate blueprint for his future endeavors in the film industry, as he enjoys shaping narratives.
Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in Shōgun
But, despite his success with Shōgun, Sanada’s desire to create from scratch as a producer may not be realized in the near future.

Road House, starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role, is a reboot of the 1989 Patrick Swayze film of the same name. Helmed by Doug Liman, the story has been written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry.
Standout performances by Gyllenhaal, and Conor McGregor, the former UFC champion, and positive word of mouth have roused the interest of the audience. Additionally, the music and film score have also become one of the biggest talking points since the film was released recently.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton, a former UFC champion. He easily sinks into the role that Patrick Swayze played in the original. Reboots can be a hit or a miss in most cases, but in this case, it lands firmly on the side of the former.

Rina Sawayama has expressed her vehement disappointment towards misogyny and racism in the music industry, writing on Instagram that she “can’t release an album under my current conditions.”
For International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8th, Sawayama was one of several female artists interviewed for The Independent’s piece about the misogynistic conditions that women in music work through. For her part, Sawayama immediately references her seething call out of Matty Healy at Glastonbury in June 2023, where she told the crowd “Tonight, this goes out to a white man that watches Ghetto Gaggers, and mocks Asian people on a podcast… he also owns my masters… I’ve had enough.”
Speaking to Chloe Little and Roisin O’Connor, Sawayama confessed: “Since summer last year, I’ve felt intense racist misogyny in a way that I’ve never felt before. In public and private I feel as though I’ve been repeatedly gaslit,...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with action franchise smash John Wick: Chapter 4. Rina Sawayama has released a deluxe version of her sophomore album, Hold the Girl, featuring two new bonus tracks. Stream it below.
Released in celebration of the original album’s first anniversary, Hold the Girl (Bonus Edition) includes the single “Flavour of the Month” and a reimagining of the record’s eighth track, “Imagining,” featuring Amaarae. The former track first appeared as a demo included on the Japanese edition of Hold the Girl.
As for the fresh cut of “Imagining,” Amaarae lends her voice for a new verse, perfectly fitting into the song’s electro-pop arrangement. The tension around her crisp, processed vocals builds from line to line, eventually coming to a head as Sawayama reenters with the song’s hook, bringing the track into “irresistibly dancy” territory. John Wick: Chapter 4 became the entry that solidified the franchise as a big moneymaker. And although the ending had left the future open for possible sequels, Keanu Reeves has not been secretive about how much harder it is to keep up with the action and begged for a definite ending for the character. However, despite several spin-offs being released, the studio now smells the money and wants to immediately develop a direct follow-up to Chapter 4 with Reeves in tow. People keep asking if he’s back, and he hasn’t really had an answer, but yeah, the studio is thinking he’s back.
ScreenRant has reported that Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake has stated at a recent earnings call, courtesy of ComicBook.com, that the studio is now including a Chapter 5 in the development of future franchise content. Drake has said, “On the Wick side we got multiple spin-offs and a Wick Five.

October 20, 2023 New York, NY – Bea Miller is in a new chapter in her life and career, and her latest singles, including “gauche,” offer a glimpse into her evolving lyrical and sonic direction. Her 5th independent single released this year, “gauche” is a gritty, midtempo alternative track with poignant references to a real-life car crash she caused at the age of 18. The single is the latest released via her own label, aptly named gauche records (Ada Worldwide). The new single arrives ahead of her 8-city US gauche tour.
The emotion-packed single was produced by frequent collaborators Kyle Shearer (Allie X, Rina Sawayama, Melanie Martinez) and guitarist Mikey Lasusa. Bea helms the track as the lead songwriter alongside Cara Salimando (Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Allie X) with additional contributions from producers Mikey Lasusa and Kyle Shearer. On the moody track, Bea navigates being distracted and day-dreaming while still being overly self-aware (and owning it). Lyrically,...

Japanese-American alt-pop star Rina Sawayama is explaining just how much trauma can influence an artist’s musical output.
Digging deep into the darkness of her past, the “John Wick 4” star, 33, stopped by BBC Three’s “In Conversation” series, where she revealed that she underwent sex and relationship therapy to alleviate experiences from her youth she now dubs as “grooming.”

“This is the first time I’m talking about this, but essentially, through doing sex therapy – sex and relationship therapy – I realized that really something that I thought was a relationship that I had, when I was 17, was actually I was groomed. Then why that realization happened in my 30s was because I was finally his age.”
The troubling experience was so impactful that it led to the track “Your Age” from her 2022 album Hold the Girl.

In a new interview with the BBC, Rina Sawayama revealed that she was groomed — a term used in the U.K. to denote gaining the trust of a minor for sexual abuse — by one of her teachers when she was 17 years old.
During the interview, conducted prior to her performance at New York Pier 17 last month, Sawayama said she wrote her most recent album, Hold the Girl, after several sessions of sex and relationship therapy. It was during those sessions that she understood she’d had an inappropriate relationship with an older man.

The 1975 are going on indefinite hiatus. Frontman Matthew Healy informed the Sacramento, California audience on Tuesday that they’d better enjoy the evening and register the experience in their memory palaces. “We love coming to this place and playing for you guys whenever we have the chance, and it’s wonderful you’re all here,” Healy said, according to Pitchfork. “After this tour we will be going on an indefinite hiatus of shows so it’s wonderful to have you guys with us tonight.” The tour dates run through a Seattle gig on Dec.

Sunday brought a close to the 10th Life Is Beautiful music festival in Las Vegas, and with it the end of the summer festival season. Life Is Beautiful, which has taken place in the city every year for the past decade (save for a pandemic-related 2020 cancellation), brought tens of thousands of concertgoers downtown, many in the psychedelic and post-Y2K fashion that’s been so common at festivals for the past several years, though this time with a fair amount of Barbie influence, too.

Matty Healy deactivated his Twitter account after apparently drawing the ire of Lucy Dacus by posting an ignorant, ableist joke on the social media platform.
In a since-deleted tweet posted to the account @mattyfrnglomg (which is believed to belong to Healy), the singer wrote: “I told Lucy Dacus that ‘Boygenius’ had inspired me and [drummer] George [Daniel] to start a new band called ‘Girlretard’. I don’t really hear from her that often.”
After invoking her supergroup trio, Dacus set the record straight on the frequency of her correspondence with Healy by replying, “you don’t hear from me at all.” In a separate tweet, Healy issued one last message in retreat, saying “Yeah this never goes well does it” before deactivating the account. See Dacus’ still-standing burn below.
While Healy’s outspoken comments have historically ranged from well-intentioned but misguided to flagrantly insensitive, his latest veered heavily toward the latter.

Lollapalooza 2023 is a wrap. During the festival’s fourth and final day, rain continued to soak Chicago’s Grant Park. Thankfully, by headlining time, the bad weather had subsided, but not before leaving plenty of puddles for festival attendees to navigate and slippery mud all around.

Demi Lovato has joined the K-Pop group Le Sserafim for a remix of their song, “Eve, Psyche & the Bluebeard’s Wife,” which appeared on this year’s Unforgiven album. Elton John performed on Sunday night at the Glastonbury Festival and dedicated his performance to his late friend George Michael‘s 60th birthday by singing Michael’s hit song “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me.”
John started off the two-hour concert by introducing his band members and announced to the crowd, “It’s a very, very special day today and I wonder how I’m going to approach it.”
He continued on to introduce Michael, saying, “One of Britain’s most fantastic songwriters, singers, artists was George Michael,” to which the crowd cheered.
Before he started the song he added, “He was my friend, he was an inspiration, and today would have been his 60th birthday. So I want to dedicate this song to his memory. And all of the music he left us with, which is so gorgeous. This is for you, George.”

Healy has recently come under fire for a guest appearance on The Adam Friedland Show in February in which he revealed that he liked to watch pornography where black women are degraded by white men and, during a discussion about the rapper Ice Spice, laughed as the hosts Adam Friedland and Nick Mullen made fun of Chinese, Japanese and Hawaiian accents. The three also made jokes about women in the podcast and discussed how the LGBTQ community reacts to queerbaiting.

From there, he treated the massive crowd to renditions of “The Bitch Is Back,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues.”
With the accompaniment of Gabriels’ Jacob Lusk and London Community Gospel Choir, John also dusted off Are You Ready for Love for the first time since 2014. It was a balmy Sunday evening on the last night of Glastonbury‘s 2023 edition and the most casual of observers would’ve been forgiven for thinking that Worthy Farm had transformed itself into an Elton John clone factory. Across the site, festival-goers were decked out in sequined knock-offs of the legendary singer’s iconic Dodgers Baseball outfit, feather boas, and oversized sunglasses befitting of the man himself.
The scene was testament to the excitement for John’s Glastonbury debut and, to add to the scale of the occasion, what might...

Rina Sawayama spoke out against The 1975's Matty Healy during her powerful 60-minute set at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival on Saturday night. The actor and singer dedicated her song "Stfu!" to her labelmate without calling him by name. Instead, she referenced the controversial comments Healy made during his February appearance on "The Adam Friedland Show" podcast.
"I wrote this next song because I was sick and tired of these microaggressions," Sawayama said. "So tonight, this song goes out to a white man who watches Ghetto Gaggers and mocks Asian people on a podcast. He also owns my masters. I've had enough!"
Sawayama's "Stfu!" is an anthem about someone reaching their breaking point with a person who refuses to listen. The lyrics include lines like: "How come you don't expect me/To get mad when I'm angry?/You've never seen it though I know I'm not the only one/How come you don't respect me?...
