Jeff Bridges has two movies in theaters this weekend, including the brand-new “Bad Times at the El Royale.” But “Starman,” the 1984 John Carpenter film he starred in with Karen Allen, also remains in his thoughts.
We chatted with Bridges about his hopes for a “Starman” reunion (among many other things) in our new “Shoot This Now” podcast, which you can listen to on Apple or right here.

As Bridges has said before, he thinks a “Starman” sequel could be pretty straightforward since the sci-fi romance, like “The Big Lebowski,” ends with his character about to become a dad.
“It’s all set up, very much like ‘Lebowski,’ like the Little Dude. The Dude in the oven,” he said. “In ‘Starman,’ Karen Allen, she’s got a bun in the oven as well.”
We mentioned to Bridges that we had an interview coming up with Carpenter, the director of “Starman,” about...

"Yeah, that's a metaphor for tuning in to what's already here." A stunning official trailer has debuted for a documentary film titled Living in the Future's Past, made by filmmaker Susan Kucera (For the Love of Tango), who partners with Jeff Bridges (who produced and features in the film), to ask: "What kind of future to we want to live in?" This doc is actually a beautifully photographed 4K "tour de force of original thinking on who we are and the life challenges we face." Sounds like a film that will massage your mind. The doc "upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, and how our fundamental nature influences our future as Humankind." It will be showing only one night on the big screen, then available on VOD after that. This is a gorgeous trailer, I love the juxtaposition of all...

Despite the devastating mudslides that overwhelmed the Santa Barbara, California community of Montecito last week — resulting in at least 20 deaths and the destruction of 100-plus homes — the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff) will go on as usual. A reason to celebrate is “needed now more than ever,” wrote Sbiff director Roger Durling in a letter soon to be shared with festival-goers. He continued, “It is an opportunity for people to gather – reflect – experience – feel – and process,” noting that cinema attendance was strong during the Great Depression.
Launched in 1986, this year’s Sbiff will include films from 58 countries. Numbered among its 45 world premieres is opening night film “the public,” the first feature written and directed by Emilio Estevez since 2010’s “The Way.” Set at a Cincinnati public library, the film follows its homeless and marginalized patrons during a dangerous cold spell. The cast includes Alec Baldwin, Jena Malone (“Neon Demon...
