Sky Studios is developing prequel series to Gomorrah and Romanzo Criminale.
The pair of shows are widely regarded to be two of the most successful Italian TV series of all time.
Inspired by Roberto Saviano’s bestseller, the untitled Gomorrah prequel from ITV Studios-backed Cattleya will spotlight the criminal rise of boss Pietro Savastano, from when he was a kid on the streets to becoming the most important and ruthless boss in Naples. Leonardo Fasoli and Maddalena Ravagli will once again work on the screenplay.
Gomorrah ran for five seasons on Sky between 2014 and 2021, totalling 58 episodes, while a 2008 film of the same name was loosely based on the book. The TV show starred the likes of Marco D’Amore, Salvatore Esposito and Fortunato Cerlino.

Sky Italia celebrated its 20-year anniversary on Tuesday by announcing a rich slate of upcoming originals, including a second season of the Italian adaptation of “Call My Agent,” which will see “The White Lotus” star Sabrina Impacciatore joining the cast.
Impacciatore’s agent is Gersh and her management is Mgmt.
The Sky Italia originals slate comprises previously announced high-end drama “M. Son of the Century” by British director Joe Wright, alongside less lavish shows in various stages – most of which have international potential. It underscores how the Italian unit of the Comcast-owned pay-tv service continues to be a major Italian industry driver.
While Sky’s German unit, which is believed to be up for sale, has put production on pause, Sky Italia is cranking out Italian originals through the platform’s Sky Studios unit at a steady pace, showing no signs of a slowdown.

Italy’s storied Titanus studio, producers of myriad golden era Cinema Italiano works, is getting a reboot and reviving its production side with several projects in development, including a contemporary sequel of Dario Argento’s supernatural chiller “Phenomena.”
Established in 1904 by Gustavo Lombardo, Titanus was a true Italian major, which during the 1960s forged a partnership with MGM. They slowed down considerably from the mid-1960s onwards after Luchino Visconti’s lavish Sicily-set costumer “The Leopard” (1963), starring Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon, went way over budget. Since the mid-1980s the studio’s output has been on a much smaller scale, and primarily for TV.
Now led by former Disney Italy marketing chief Stefano Bethlen, who is Titanus’ general manager, the company – which has a 400-title library comprising early works by Italian masters such as Federico Fellini, and Visconti classics, alongside plenty of genre fare – is ramping up...

Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio, the Italian directing duo best known internationally for their Locarno premiere “Seven Acts of Mercy,” are developing a colonial-era drama that they’re presenting during the Rotterdam Film Festival’s CineMart co-production market.
“Prince Aden” begins in 1935, when a 16-year-old Somali boy passes the test to become a dubat, a soldier in the Italian army that has invaded Ethiopia on the orders of Mussolini. Aden Sicré is sent to the frontlines, but after being injured on his first day of service he’s forced to return home – where he is unexpectedly hailed as a war hero by the Fascist regime.

When HBO Max drops the fifth and final season of Neapolitan gangster saga “Gomorrah” on Jan. 27, it will also mark the end of a convoluted seven-year journey for Italy’s most widely exported TV show.
“In Italian TV, there is a before and after ‘Gomorrah,’” says Nils Hartmann, senior VP of Germany and Italy for Sky Studios, the production arm of the pay TV operator that originated the gritty, hyperrealistic crime skein.
Besides attaining megahit status in Italy, the show has traveled to 190 countries, including the U.S., where it ran into snags due to the misdeeds of Harvey Weinstein and The Weinstein Co.’s 2018 bankruptcy.
“It was a big mess,” says Oliver Bachert, sales chief at Germany’s Beta, which was selling the show.
He notes that on top of thorny rights issues, the moral quandaries and the stigma of the bankruptcy effectively blocked “Gomorrah” on its U.S.

The fifth and final season of Neapolitan mob series “Gomorrah” was unveiled Monday during an emotionally charged Rome event saluting the end of the gritty, groundbreaking show.
As Nils Hartmann, senior director of Sky Italia original productions, put it during the press conference, in Italian TV “there is a before and after ‘Gomorrah.’”
The hyper-realistic crime skein is Italy’s greatest TV export, having sold to 190 territories since its 2014 launch, despite being subtitled even for Italian audiences, most of whom don’t understand the Neapolitan dialect in which “Gomorrah” is voiced. The show — best known for mixing neorealism with genre conventions and Shakespearean tropes — is produced by ITV Studios-owned Cattleya in collaboration with Germany’s Beta Film.
Plotwise, the final season takes its two lead characters — Ciro Di Marzio, played by actor-turned-director Marco D’Amore, and Gennaro “Genny” Savastano, played by Salvatore Esposito (both pictured) — and their tormented paths to extreme consequences.

From launch, critics dogged HBO Max about its higher pricing, the lack of access via Roku — and most of all, the apparent dearth of must-see shows that would make the streamer essential instead of one more platform among so many. Last summer, the complaints were still fresh when HBO Max announced a slate of international acquisitions: There, next to “The Great Pottery Throw Down,” was “Gomorrah.” All four seasons, companion movie “The Immortal,” and a fifth season to come. An Italian mafia drama didn’t get much attention; it wasn’t the stuff of corporate strategy.
But “Gomorrah” is much more than a quirky streamer pickup. For its Italian producer, Cattleya, “Gomorrah” sparked a trend in gritty, real-world storytelling that reshaped Italian TV. Beta Film — a company founded to exploit Federico Fellini’s “La Strada” — licensed “Gomorrah” in nearly 200 countries, and it became one of the most successful properties in its history.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Fargo” Season 4, Episode 11, “Storia Americana,” including the ending.]
When Loy Cannon dies, he’s the only one who doesn’t see it coming.
Standing on his porch, having just negotiated a peaceful (if far from advantageous) agreement with the Fadda crime family, Loy (Chris Rock) stops to silently admire his happy children playing inside.
“He has this moment where he thinks, ‘Oh, I thought I needed more power to keep my family safe, but now that I’ve lost my power, I think we can be a happy, healthy family,'” showrunner Noah Hawley said. “In that moment of victory, when he thinks this might be the best thing for them, is when the knife goes in.”
Zelmare Roulette (played by Karen Aldridge) is the one doing the stabbing, but to the audience, Loy’s fate was sealed the second he picked up those oranges. Ever since Vito Corleone’s iconic shooting in “The Godfather,...

Fargo Season 4 Episode 6
The death of Doctor Senator has resulted in all-out war on Fargo. Despite the internal strife on the Fadda side of the conflict, it’s clear there is alignment on the fact that Loy Cannon and his men are the enemy. That enemy finally starts showing his teeth in “Camp Elegance,” but Loy’s show of aggression comes with a significant risk; his boy Satchel is still in Fadda care and obviously at risk to be the target of retaliation. Thankfully, a former boy soldier in the ranks keeps this war from escalating even further, for now.
The episode begins with Ethelrida blowing out the candles on her birthday cake, but the vibe in the room is anything but celebratory. That ominous feeling extends across the entire 45-minute installment. Next thing you know, Odis is getting attacked in his apartment, brought right...

Every installment of FX’s visually arresting anthology series “Fargo” features a deliciously sinister antagonist––think Billy Bob Thornton’s Lorne Malvo, Bokeem Woodbine’s Mike Milligan and David Thewlis’ V.M. Varga. This year, Jessie Buckley brazenly takes up the mantle with her simultaneously hilarious and chilling portrayal of Oraetta Mayflower, an indefatigably chipper nurse with a dark history and a large body count. Buckley’s unpredictable take on the iconic “Fargo” Minnesota-nice character seems destined for awards traction, and you betcha she deserves it.
Season 4 of “Fargo” centers on a brewing war in 1950s Kansas City between the Italian mob, led by dueling brothers Josto Fadda (Jason Schwartzman) and Gaetano Fadda (Salvatore Esposito), and a Black crime syndicate helmed by Loy Cannon (Chris Rock). A gang war is brewing as Fargo kicks off its fourth season on FX with an epically ambitious, nearly three-hour (!) premiere — and a very odd arrangement may be the only thing preventing bloodshed.
We meet teen Ethelrida (E’myri Crutchfield) in 1950 Kansas City as she’s hauled into the principal’s office for punishment, a la Raising Arizona‘s H.I. McDunnough. She gets us up to speed with a history report on the city’s criminal underground: Back in 1900, the Jewish crime syndicate brokered a deal with the Irish mob, trading each other their sons in an attempt to keep the peace.

They say chaos is a ladder, but too many people may be trying to climb the rungs in “The Land of Taking and Killing.” Donatello Fadda’s death is a tragedy for Justo and his family, but it’s also an opening, not only for Loy Cannon and his men, but for family black sheep Gaetano, Justo’s brother. Like a tiger plucked from the wild and dropped into Kansas City, Gaetano is sniffing out weakness, looking to strike and stake his claim. His arrival could cause the distraction that Loy needs, or escalate tensions into an all-out war.
With his bulging eyes and visibly simmering rage, Salvatore Esposito is a magnetic presence whenever he’s on screen and exactly the right kind of wild card to shake things up. Gaetano claims that he killed on behalf of Benito Mussolini until the war turned,...

Time has become an odd thing to track throughout the coronavirus pandemic, but it still seems hard to believe that it’s been over three years since the last season of Noah Hawley’s Fargo wrapped on FX. Fargo season 3 was often ponderous, existential, and meandering. It also routinely gave off a vibe that Hawley was growing tired of the Midwest, Coen-worshipping box that he had placed himself in. Perhaps time away from the anthology series allowed Hawley to return with a bit more energy, but also a narrower focus. Instead of a twisty-turny story fueled by happenstance and bad luck, Fargo season 4 is a ‘50s-set, pulpy tale of two warring Kansas City gangs. Some may call this season’s story timely, but it would be relevant in any era of American history. This is a tale of immigrants, race, and what it means to be an American.

“You know why America loves a crime story? Because America is a crime story,” mob boss Josto Fadda (Jason Schwartzman) argues in the fourth season of Fargo. We are a nation built on stolen land, with the labor of stolen people. And perhaps because of this, as Josto notes, we tend to root for the takers in these stories, rather than the innocent victims being taken.

Fargo creator Noah Hawley is one of the busiest men in Hollywood right now, which means the award-winning series was put on hitaus longer than fans anticipated. Thankfully, FX brought Hawley back for Fargo Season 4, brandishing the intriguing cast addition of Chris Rock, who will be the lead in this installment of the anthology series.
While Fargo Season 3 was another ratings winner for FX, some critics of the show believe that the premise has gone stale. Though we largely enjoyed the quieter, more personal third season, we have to admit that the routine runs the risk of getting tired. Fargo Season 4 certainly will be speculated on by fans and critics wondering what shape it will take when it returns.

It may have taken a while after a Covid-caused production shutdown, but Fargo‘s intriguing, Chris Rock-fronted fourth season has finally procured a premiere, with FX having officially set a September release date.
Fargo Season 4 will premiere on FX on Sunday, September 27 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt, on which the first two episodes will air. Subsequent episodes will premiere on the same Sunday timeslot individually on a weekly basis. Streamers will be interested to know that each new episode will hit Hulu the day after their FX premieres.
The release date announcement occurs after the Chicago production of Fargo was one of several to be shut down back in March. Despite having only two episodes left to shoot, the shutdown resulted in a delay to the fourth season’s original April 19 release date; a move likely designed to avoid a situation similar to shows like AMC’s The Walking Dead...

Hooray, right?
Fargo Season 4 picks up in 1950, at the end of two great American migrations - that of Southern Europeans from countries like Italy, who came to the US at the turn of the last century and settled in northern cities like New York, Chicago - and African Americans who left the south in great numbers to escape Jim Crow and moved to those same cities - you saw a collision of outsiders, all fighting for a piece of the American dream.

FX has finally settled on a premiere date for season 4 of “Fargo.”
Season 4 was originally scheduled to debut in April, but was delayed for five months “due to the postponement of production related to the coronavirus.” It will now premiere with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, Sept. 27, with the remaining nine episodes airing weekly from there. Production on the fourth installment, which is headlined by Chris Rock, is scheduled to resume later this month, per FX.
Described as a story of immigration and assimilation and the things we do for money, the fourth season of “Fargo” is set in 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri, where two criminal syndicates — one Italian, one African-American — have struck an uneasy peace. To cement their truce, Loy Cannon (Rock), the head of the African American crime family, trades his youngest son Satchel (Rodney Jones), to his enemy Donatello Fadda (Tommaso Ragno), the head of the Italian mafia.

The Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section has unveiled its lineup of 10 competition entries, nine of which are world premieres.
The lineup also includes a mix of buzz titles from known and emerging talent, characterized this year by an accent on Eastern Europe, as well as the section’s customary strong representation of female directors.
Hotly anticipated queer comedy fantasy “Saint-Narcisse” by Canadian artist-turned-filmmaker Bruce Labruce and queer romance drama “My Tender Matador,” directed by Chile’s Rodrigo Sepúlveda Urzúa — and set during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship — are among the standouts, as are shorts by French-Senegalese director Mati Diop (“Atlantics”) and Poland’s Malgorzata Szumowska (“Body”), which will unspool as part of the Prada-commissioned Miu Miu Women’s Tales, a series of short films directed by women.

Exclusive: The fifth season of Italian crime hit Gomorrah is due to shoot at the end of the summer, we can reveal. But that could be the last we see of the mob epic, according to the show’s producer Cattleya.
“We expect to start Gomorrah between July and September,” Cattleya President Riccardo Tozzi has told us.
Marco D’Amore, who plays iconic character Ciro Di Marzio in the drama, will return to direct the first five episodes with series regular Claudio Cupellini also helming.
The scripts are currently in advanced development and “there will be a lot to prepare,” admits Tozzi due to the production challenges posed by coronavirus. As usual, the plan is for one episode of the Sky-backed show to shoot outside of Italy.
“I think it will be great,” said Tozzi about the new series. “Each time, we’ve tried to do something different. We’ve found...

FX Networks just announced that it is positioning the premiere of the fourth installment of Fargo starring Chris Rock because of the suspension of production related to the coronavirus pandemic. Season 4 will no longer premiere on its previously scheduled date of April 19 and will no longer be eligible for the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards. A new premiere date will be determined once production resumes.
Fargo is the first in what is expected to be a wave of shows which have not yet premiered their upcoming seasons whose production has been halted or delayed because of Covid-19. The previously announced premiere dates for those series will be pushed, creating a void on networks’ and streamers’ schedules. in the next couple of months. It is a lot trickier for shows that have started airing their new seasons, and those seasons’ filming has now been put on hold.

The anticipated fourth season of FX’s anthology series “Fargo” will no longer premiere in April as planned.
“Due to the postponement of production related to the coronavirus, the fourth installment of FX’s award-winning limited series ‘Fargo’ will no longer premiere on Sunday, April 19th,” FX Networks said in a statement. “A new premiere date will be determined once production resumes.”
The news means that the fourth season of the series, which will see Chris Rock star in a major role, will more than likely not be eligible for the 2020 Emmy Awards. It would need to air the majority of its episodes ahead of May 31 in order to qualify. The show is one of dozens that has suspended production amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Nearly three years will have passed by the time Season 4 of FX’s “Fargo” premieres in April, and audiences should prepare themselves for a version of the series never before seen.
Not only has “Fargo” left the wilds of Alberta to film stateside — in Chicago, specifically — but the season is set firmly in the past, lending the show some period piece bonafides it only flirted with in prior seasons. And it would be remiss to not mention the most significant adjustment to the DNA of the series: the diversification of a cast whose pallor too-often resembled the the snowy fields of winter in Minnesota.
Also, there are so many hats.
“This year, we’re really looking at the origins of the American capital crime, which is the exploitation of cheap labor,” Hawley explained of the upcoming season. “It took a long time for those people working to break into what we consider mainstream America.
