Ice Cube will play Ebenezer Scrooge, the cantankerous holiday hater from A Christmas Carol, in Humbug, a contemporary retelling of the Charles Dickens classic directed by Tim Story, Deadline reports.
While the Scrooge of Humbug will be a wealthy real estate mogul rather than a banker, the story will remain otherwise unchanged. Scrooge will be visited by the three ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, who will show him the error of his miserly ways and lead him to redemption.

Universal Pictures has picked up Todd R. Jones and Earl Richey Jones' script "Humbug" and has attached Ice Cube to star and Tim Story ("Ride Along," "Barbershop") to direct.
The script is a contemporary retelling of Charles Dickens' classic story of a wealthy real estate mogul who is shown a path to redemption by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.
Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz will produce while the two Joneses will co-produce. Cube will next film the New Line comedy "Fist Fight".

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has snatched up a Christmastime, Ice Cube-starring script about a modern-day Scrooge. Titled Humbug, the film will reimagine Charles Dickens's Christmas Carol with Ice as a wealthy, unpleasant real-estate mogul haunted by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future (no word yet on if this mogul will also be a Republican who eventually runs for president and threatens to build huge walls everywhere, but it will be a cautionary tale nonetheless). The script was reportedly written by Todd R. Jones and Earl Richey Jones; Tim Story, who has worked with Ice on Barbershop and the Ride Along series, is set to direct for a potential 2017 release — in other words: not soon enough.

Ice Cube and his “Ride Along” director Tim Story are going to reteam for a new kind of ride — Universal’s “Humbug.” The script, a new take on Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol,” will star the rapper-turned-actor as an Ebenezer Scrooge-esque real estate mogul who is visited by ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Todd R. Jones and Earl Ritchey Jones wrote the screenplay, with Story attached to direct. Cube will produce alongside both Joneses and Jeff Kwatinetz. Currently riding high on the success of Ride Along, the Jump Street films and Straight Outta Compton, Ice Cube is about to have a very happy Christmas. He's reportedly negotiated an eight-figure fee to star in Humbug, a Scrooge-riffing comedy to be directed by his Ride Along and Barbershop honcho Tim Story.Obviously taking Charles Dickens' perennial A Christmas Carol as its inspiration, Humbug will see Cube playing an ultra-capitalist real-estate mogul shown the error of his greedy ways when visited by a succession of didactic ghosts on Christmas Eve. "Any motherfucker who go around saying 'Merry Christmas' deserve a cap in they ass," he probably won't say.MGM, New Line and Disney all wanted the project, but Universal won the bidding war. Todd R. Jones and R. Richey Jones (Johnson Family Vacation, Rio) wrote the screenplay that caused all the buzz. Whether we're talking about an R-rated...

He's not exactly the first name I'd think of if I was asked what public personality whose life I'd like to see a TV series built on. But it's happening, thanks in part to Ellen DeGeneres of all people. Maybe she's a fan, and I'm just not aware. A scripted TV comedy series based on the life of Judge Greg Mathis has been put into development at Warner Bros TV and Ellen DeGeneres' company, A Very Good Production. Fox has picked up a script commitment for the untitled project, which will be written by brothers Todd Jones and Earl Richey Jones (Johnson Family Vacation, In Living Color), and will follow the life of a thug-turned-judge who is in full control of his...

Exclusive: Two top Warner Bros syndication personalities, Ellen DeGeneres and Judge Greg Mathis, are teaming for a scripted comedy inspired by Mathis’ life. Produced by Warner Bros TV and DeGeneres’ studio-based A Very Good Production, the project, a multi-camera comedy, has sold to Fox with a script commitment. Written by brothers Todd Jones and Earl Richey Jones (Johnson Family Vacation), the untitled comedy centers on a hoodlum-turned-judge who has total control of his courtroom — and no control at home raising his four kids. As a teenager, Detroit native Mathis was a gang member who ended up in jail. When given an early probation after his single mother was diagnosed with cancer, he turned his life around, went to college and became a judge. He is married with four kids. Mathis, DeGeneres, Todd and Earl Richey Jones are executive producing the project with A Very Good Production’s Jeff Kleeman. This...
