In Marissa Maltz’s Jazzy, the enchanting sequel to The Unknown Country, audiences are treated to a heartfelt exploration of childhood in the picturesque landscapes of South Dakota. This delightful film, which premiered at Tribeca, follows the titular character through the various seasons of her life from ages 8 to 12, capturing the essence of what it means to be young, free and full of wonder.
The film opens with Jazzy (Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux) at West Elementary, where she is seen engaging in the simple joys of childhood — riding the school bus with her best friend, Syriah (Syriah Fool Head Means), and playing with friends in the schoolyard. These moments are punctuated by a lively and eclectic synth soundtrack, reminiscent of the first film, which adds a whimsical and modern touch to the narrative. One of the most endearing scenes occurs when Jazzy invites only one classmate to her birthday party. They...

Lily Gladstone isn’t literally related to 13-year-old Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreux (who everyone calls “Jazzy”), but across two interconnected films, Gladstone has portrayed a fictional aunt to the real-life rising star — and watched her grow up in the process.
The duo’s latest film, also called “Jazzy,” premiered at Tribeca on Sunday, and boasts the “Killers of the Flower Moon” Oscar-nominated star as an executive producer and has Gladstone in an extended cameo. “Jazzy” is director Morrisa Maltz’s follow-up to last year’s “The Unknown Country,” which starred Gladstone but also saw her visiting with then-six-year-old Jazzy, playing herself. Another movie with this group? For Gladstone, it was “such an easy yes.”
“I just wanted my name associated with this project in a meaningful way,” Gladstone said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “Finding ‘Jazzy’ as a film really came out of making ‘The Unknown Country,’ so there’s...

Nicholas Colia’s Griffin in Summer swept the narrative features award categories at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, nabbing honors for best U.S. film and screenplay, as well as a special jury mention for new narrative director.
Colia’s feature debut stars Everett Blunck as an aspiring 14-year-old playwright who falls hard for his mother’s handyman and struggling performance artist, played by Owen Teague. The jury mentioned in its notes Thursday that the film “straddled the very thin line between heartwarming, tragic, hilarious and awkward” and that it “fills a void in the marketplace for films that touch on sophisticated themes while remaining family friendly. Never pandering, always fresh, full of relatable universal experiences while being incredibly specific and nuanced.”

Morrisa Maltz renders the realities of girlhood with compelling tenderness in her sophomore narrative effort Jazzy. The film, which takes place in the same cinematic universe as the director’s critically acclaimed debut feature The Unknown Country, follows six years in the life of its protagonist as she navigates friendship, romantic crushes and the small freedoms of growing up. Jazzy’s story is based on that of Maltz’s goddaughter, Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux, with whom the director worked closely on this delicate narrative.
Premiering at Tribeca, Jazzy trails its titular character from age 6 through 12. The film combines the experimental narrative and temporal sweep of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood with the considerate eye of films like Maimouna Doucouré’s Cuties and Minhal Baig’s We Grown Now. Maltz takes the problems of her protagonist seriously, and so much of what makes Jazzy engrossing is how the director portrays daily events with a stirring profundity.

While there was much Oscar buzz around “Killers of the Flower Moon” actor Lily Gladstone (one of the most exciting cinematic names of the past decade), there was another Gladstone-starrer out in the world last year, quietly captivating a smaller audience in limited release. That picture was Morrisa Maltz’s hypnotic road movie “The Unknown Country,” an original narrative touched by a documentarian’s perceptive sensibility that followed Gladstone’s Tana on a journey through the American Midwest and, ultimately, her grief. Those who made the time for Maltz’s modest film then met the young Native girl Jasmine “Jazzy” Shangreaux, Maltz’s real-life goddaughter. Now, the young girl gets her own vehicle with the tender and poetic “Jazzy,” debuting at Tribeca Festival.

When is documentary filmmaking not quite a documentary? When filmmaker Morrisa Maltz does what she does best and fills in a blank canvass with her uniquely lived-in, understated, and wholly authentic paintbrush. The most headline-making aspect of "Jazzy" will likely be the fact that it acts as a sort of spiritual sequel to Maltz's previous effort, the Lily Gladstone-starring "The Unknown Country" that released to great acclaim in 2022. The similarly low-key indie also happened to feature a minor supporting character nicknamed Jazzy, who now steps up to take the spotlight as the main protagonist this time around. Still, the most immediately approachable aspect of this follow-up film, which also includes a cameo appearance by Gladstone's character Tana but otherwise stands entirely on its own to the benefit of newcomers, has to do with the strength of its central coming-of-age story — one that, as revealed in the end credits,...

The Duplasses are starting miniature with their first full-fledged family affair on all sides of the camera: the short film “Oh, Christmas Tree,” a bittersweet 10-minute ode to a father and daughter reliving their favorite holiday traditions.
It’s written by Mark Duplass, directed by his wife Katie Aselton (“Mack and Rita“), and stars their 16-year-old daughter Ora opposite her dad in roles that aren’t exactly autobiographical despite the onscreen, lived-in rapport. Here, the mother is dead, and the daughter, Claire, is now the one doing the parenting as her father grapples with mental health struggles. The short, currently seeking buyers out of Tribeca Festival, packs a lot into its brief running time, and for this trio, it also marks Ora’s entry into filmmaking as she readies to follow in her parents’ footsteps.

Hulu has announced its submissions for the Primetime Emmy Awards for the upcoming crime drama “Under the Bridge.”
Stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough will both be submitted for Emmy consideration in supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie, it was revealed to Variety exclusively. The two stars will be vying for one of seven possible slots against possible contenders such as Sandra Oh from “The Sympathizer,” Kali Reis from “True Detective: Night Country” and multiple women from FX’s “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” notably Diane Lane.
“Under the Bridge” is an adaptation of Rebecca Godfrey’s gripping book, delving into the true story of 14-year-old Reena Virk, a teen who didn’t return home after attending a party in 1997. The series unfolds through the perspectives of Godfrey (portrayed by Keough) and a local police officer (played by Gladstone), exposing the world of her peers who were implicated in the case.

Now that awards season has come to an end and the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the past 10 or so months. There can only be a select group of actors who walk away with an Academy Award each year. For those who may be disappointed that Lily Gladstone failed to take home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fear not. While she may not have won the biggest prize, she still wound up winning awards season.
Gladstone, who has shared the fact they are nonbinary and uses both she/they pronouns, has clearly had a massive breakout year. Let us count the ways here:

With a fresh Leading Actress Oscar nomination for the role of Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone is next set to enter sci-fi territory with upcoming movie The Memory Police—a move that will also reunite her with Scorsese, set to executive produce.
“It’s on an unnamed island at an unnamed place, unnamed time,” Gladstone said of the new film, during a Q&a following a Killers of the Flower Moon screening in LA on Sunday. “So it takes place nowhere and therefore everywhere.”
The Memory Police will be directed by Reed Morano, with a script from Charlie Kaufman, adapted from the Yōko Ogawa novel of the same name.
“The adaptation is done by Charlie Kaufman,” Gladstone continued, “so it’s labeled as a sci-fi, but in the way that [Kaufman’s previous films] Eternal Sunshine [of the Spotless Mind] or Synecdoche [New York] was a sci-fi. It...

Lily Gladstone is single-handedly expanding Indigenous representation in film with two upcoming projects.
The “Killers of the Flower Moon” Oscar nominee narrates and executive produces documentary “Bring Them Home/Aiskótáhkapiyaaya” about the buffalo restoration on the Blackfeet Reservation. The film will premiere at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival on February 24 in Missoula, Montana.
“‘Bring Them Home’ highlights a crucial story of survival; of Iinnii, our Buffalo, of Blackfoot people and our culture, and of the very land which we call home,” Gladstone said in a press statement. “Like the Buffalo, our land does not acknowledge fences, and nor does our changing climate. For the Blackfeet, survival of the Buffalo has always been intrinsically connected to our survival as people — the revitalization of this knowledge is essential for not just us, but for all of us who share this planet, and who work to nurture hope for our collective future.

Exclusive: Lily Gladstone is set to reteam with Morrisa Maltz on Jazzy, a companion piece and follow-up to their acclaimed indie drama The Unknown Country, released by Music Box Films, which brought Gladstone a Gotham Award last fall. In addition to starring, Gladstone will exec produce, along with the team at Duplass Brothers Productions.
While The Unknown Country followed Gladstone’s character — the grieving Tana — on a lonely road trip across America, it also introduced the scene-stealing character of Jazzy, based on and played by Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux, a young Oglala Lakota girl growing up in South Dakota. The roles are flipped in Jazzy, with Shangreaux taking center stage and Gladstone supporting her narrative journey. Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. For the curious, the season also offers up a smuggler’s bounty full of talking special post-screening Q&As, roundtables, filmmaker panels, celebratory cocktail receptions and more.

Tana is in the middle of nowhere. And so are we as we make ourselves comfortable in the passenger seat of this warm road trip movie. Morrisa Maltz’s second feature, The Unknown Country, would’ve been known as a slice-of-life movie in a better world, a world that’s content with the random magic found in fleeting experiences. Grief and hope go alongside Tana’s car as she transcends a profound sense of loss and sees the light at the end of the tunnel.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In The Film?
It’s not estrangement, per se, that’s created this overwhelming gap between Tana and her extended Oglala Lakota family. But when loss came at her out of nowhere and she set off on a road trip through the icy South Dakota roads, an invitation to her cousin Lainey’s wedding opened up a whole new world for her to look through.

The final month of the year has arrived, and with it an early Festivus bounty of news (very exciting!) about the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which are happening once again on February 25, back on the beach in Santa Monica. Last week brought tell of our incomparable new Spirit Awards host: SNL funnywoman and Emmy-nominated streaming series auteur Aidy Bryant. Now, the nondenominational secular-humanist Holiday Gnomes have brought us something potentially even more exciting… the nominees!
For the third consecutive year, the Spirit Awards will recognize outstanding achievement in uniqueness of vision, innovation and boldness in TV and streaming in addition to feature film. And for the second year, all acting categories are gender-neutral.
Noms were revealed in a livestream earlier today on Film Independent’s YouTube channel (like and subscribe!) by special guest presenters Joel Kim Booster and Natalie Morales:
Spirit Awards winners are voted on exclusively by Film Independent Members.

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. That’s why some big-budgeted fare was deemed eligible or, in the parlance of the show, independent.

In one of the final scenes in writer/director Morrisa Maltz’s debut feature, “The Unknown Country,” the camera tracks the shadow of a moving car, following it as it bends around rocks and trees, constantly moving forward in its anonymity. It’s an apt visual metaphor for this lyrical film, as Lily Gladstone traverses through the country, driving towards some unspoken conclusion.

Just two miles outside of their destination, the Cadillac that star Lily Gladstone was driving for director Morrisa Maltz’s “The Unknown Country” ran out of gas amid a 2,200-mile road trip, the pair recently told IndieWire. And just days before their film was set to be released, SAG-AFTRA went on strike, leaving Gladstone unable to promote the passion project in its homestretch.
“The Unknown Country,” an independent road trip movie that blends documentary and narrative elements to gorgeous and profound effect, is Maltz’s debut feature and is finally hitting theaters Friday after premiering at SXSW 2022. It’s also the type of movie that might struggle to find any sort of wider audience, if not for Gladstone’s involvement.
For months, Gladstone had this week circled on her calendar for promotion. But, per the strike rules laid out by SAG-AFTRA, actors are unable to promote past, present, or future projects produced by struck companies.

There is no unknown country in “The Unknown Country,” a gently meandering road trip through an America that even those of us directly unacquainted have traveled via the movies: Morrisa Maltz’s lovely second feature trades in the familiar imagery of unfettered highways ribboned through the great, grassy middle of nowhere, roadside inns outlined in humming hot-pink neon, gas stations slumped against the sparse landscape like oily oases. It’s the people building their lives along this route, however, that this sociable, inquisitive docufiction seeks to discover, as Maltz profiles the faces flashing by the driver only passing through. A diner hostess, a convenience store clerk, a motel proprietor — here, all get to share their stories beyond the usual scope of road-movie bit parts.

Tana, the compassionate protagonist of The Unknown Country, is asked about her plans at one point in the movie and answers with a slightly embarrassed smile: “Just kinda floatin.’ ” Cut loose from the day-to-day by the death of her grandmother and far from home, Tana might not have a specific itinerary, but, mile by mile in what will turn out to be a 2,000-mile journey, she’s searching, in her guarded way, and open to possibilities. Lily Gladstone inhabits the role with warmth and deep wells of feeling, striking nuanced notes in Tana’s watchful solitude as well as her interactions. The people Tana meets during her travels include characters played by actors and real-life locals playing themselves, and the quiet but stirring effect is a dreamscape of eye-opening geography, existential longing and the enduring workaday.

Following another round of waivers granted by SAG-AFTRA, we have the first one granted that will allow to promote a film rather then shooting a film. Sources confirmed to Deadline that The Unknown Country, which stars Lily Gladstone and Quantum Leap‘s Raymond Lee and opens this Friday, was granted a waiver by the guild allowing for guild members to do publicity for the upcoming film.
SAG also sent an email to any publicist working with talent that they may now resume work with SAG-AFTRA performers, including publicity, which will allow Gladstone and Lee to promote the film before and after the films release on Friday without any ramifications.

Poised for quite a major fall with Martin Scorsese’s stellar Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone also leads one of our most recommended films of the summer. Though it premiered at last year’s SXSW festival to strong acclaim, Music Box Films smartly waited until this summer to release The Unknown Country ahead of Scorsese’s epic a few months later. Ahead of a July 28 release, the first trailer and poster have now arrived for Morrisa Maltz’s debut feature.
Here’s the synopsis: “Reeling from a devastating loss, Tana (Lily Gladstone) is pulled back into the world by an unexpected invitation to her cousin’s wedding. She packs up her late grandmother’s Cadillac and hits the open road, driving from her home in Minnesota to South Dakota. After reconnecting with her Oglala Lakota family, Tana sets off to retrace a surreal journey that her grandmother took decades ago,...

"So how long have you been driving?" "All my life..." Music Box Films has revealed an official trailer for an acclaimed indie drama titled The Unknown Country, made by a filmmaker named Morrisa Maltz. This premiered at last year's SXSW Film Festival, and also played at BAMcinemaFest + the Denver, Montclair, Santa Fe, and Calgary Film Fests. An unexpected invitation sends a grieving woman on a lonely road trip through the American Midwest towards the border between Texas & Mexico. A personal reverie summoned from a beguiling mix of fact & fiction, The Unknown Country is an "arresting" debut from Morrisa Maltz. Described as "a stunning spiritual companion to Terrence Malick and Nomadland." The indie film stars Lily Gladstone as Tana (who also stars in Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon this year), with Raymond Lee and Richard Ray Whitman. Well this looks wonderful. Not only stunning cinematography, following her through America's landscapes,...

Music Box Films has acquired North American rights to Babak Jalali’a immigrant drama Fremont, which premiered to acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival before moving on to SXSW, slating it for release in theaters later in the year, with a home entertainment bow to follow.
Starring real-life refugee Anaita Wali Zada, Fremont centers on mid-20s Afghan refugee Donya (Zada), whose complicated feelings about her prior work as a translator for the U.S. military have left her troubled and unable to sleep. Drifting through her uninspired routine in Fremont, California, which comprises her work at a fortune cookie factory and her lonely dinners at a local restaurant, Donya struggles to connect with the culture and people of her new, unfamiliar surroundings.
